The time has finally come, when I found a few spare hours to start sharing my collection. I'm in the process of organizing and cataloging my King, so it will have to wait, and for that matter I'll still be busy for another few weeks. None the less, I'll begin my showcase with the books I first started collecting when I was about 16 - the books that sparked my interest in collecting, and first gave me that euphoric feeling upon their arrival.

In these first posts I will showcase my Michael Slade collection. All are 1st editions, 1st printings and most are signed.

The most exstensive Slade collection I have ever witnessed. Impressive!
You should consider uploading the pics to the Gallery here. They can be viewed and will randomly be drawn to the main page.
If you need assistance/advise, let me know.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing those photos. Your approach to collecting seems similar to mine. I try to get US and UK editions of all the authors/books that I like. I guess I'm just not interested in other language editions besides English.

Randall -

This is after I recently sold all my ARCs. Also, I'd be willing to put them in the galleries.... if you wanted to PM me some tips/instructions! (Your walk through for Imageshack hosting was very helpful in starting this thread!)

Carlos -

I agree, thats the best way to go, although for King I've only been able to afford the US hardcovers to this point. As for foreign language, some look cool (like the Japanese Gunslinger) but at the same time, if you don't know japanese how are you 100% sure its what the seller says it is?

Matt, Turtlex, John -

Thanks!

Needfulkings -

Slade is the perfect author for collectors; the bulk of the first editions are fairly inexpensive and accessible, but there are a few pieces that will drive you up the wall finding, much less signed. My advice, NEVER try collecting Slade ARCs - he hasn't gained enough popularity yet for ARCs to be kept by the reviewers, and they are much scarcer than even the rarest of King ARCs (I would guess). For instance, the Cutthroat ARC, only two copies are known to exist, and Jay Clarke himself didn't know that it existed at all until one of them was presented to him at a signing. I recently sold an ARC of Swastika, which was the only known copy in circulation; I got it direct from the publisher and was told that their standard procedure is to destroy proof copies!!

Three new additions I am VERY EXCITED about. Edited some of my first posts to include a signed copy of Michael Slade's "Headhunter" as well as a signed UK 1st of "Ghoul" both inscribed to me!

And here is his brand new book - released in hardcover only in the UK, signed and inscribed to myself. The inscription makes me feel all giddy!

Good stuff!

Re: traycased edition of the Lovecraft art book. There is some extra material laid into the traycase with the book. In your picture, just under the letter from Centipede Press, there is some black and white artwork that looks as though it came from a comic book with "word balloons" in the images. I can find nothing like that in my "extras". What is that?

e_taylor
08-09-2008, 06:23 AM
Bob -

Aside from the extra prints, here is what I received with the book.

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/3396/picture006bw3.jpg
Letter from Centipede Press, Mock up dust jacket for "The Deadly Percheron, and The Postmortem.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/9716/picture010qf1.jpg

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/4002/picture011gl3.jpg

Two 8.5 x 11 sketches/photocopies (not quite sure), however on the backs labeled, so presumably early drafts of some of the pieces in the book.

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2314/picture007gt9.jpg

A 16-page booklet the same size as the book. The first five pages is a comic of "Dreams in the Witch House", followed by one black and white piece of art, followed by a write up on John Stewart, and then followed by 9 pages of black and white art.

Bob -

I had never given much thought to it, but now that you mention it I think its probably a page signature from an early draft of the book - I haven't had a chance to go through the whole book yet, but I'm willing to bet these pages are in there. That with the notations on the two smaller pages make me think I'm on the right track anyways. As to why they got thrown into my copy? Who knows. I took pictures of the inside pages of the comic/art pages - if you'd like, PM me your email and I'll send them to you.

*EDIT*
I took a quick look and my suspicion was correct - its a signature from around the middle of the book, part of "Comic Art" and most of "John Stewart" within the Middle Art section.

I think you got better "extras" with your book than I did. But, then again, I'm not sure what to do with what I got so I won't complain. Interesting assortment of odds and ends. The bottom line is the book is probably my favorite book of the year, so far.

Great additions to your collection, Eric.

Someday maybe I'll get an S/L of FIRESTARTER.

I actually hadn't planned on it at this stage in the game, but I took a chance and got real lucky on it. The destroyed dust jacket and a poorly described spot of the end paper kept the sale price low. Replaced the dust jacket with a new one straight from Alex Berman, and there you (or I as the case would be) have it.

The spot on the ffep ended up being tiny, about 1/8th of an inch, and looks to be from a little left over glue during manufacturing. Combined with a tiny rub on the bottom edges near the spine, its not perfect but based on what I paid I'm extremely happy about it!

UK Signed 1st (only copy I've ever seen):

US Signed first, by all three authors that at that point made up the Slade pen name, in the year and month of publication, I've been led to believe by one of the authors that this was one of the first books they ever signed:

Quick Slade question:

I have a couple of Slade US firsts and I am a fan too, but have only read Ghoul.

Is it supposed to have all those blank sheets at the end, and if so WHY?

Eddy -

They all have those extra pages at the end, but I have no clue why. My guess would be that the page signatures just ended up that way, but who knows.

There is a variation on the 1st printing of this title though. On page 256 true 1st copies have a sticker correcting an error. One of the illustrations was printed incorrectly and caught by Viking before they were shipped. The first run of the 1st printing had these stickers applied to correct the problem. Subsequent runs were just printed properly.
