This is it folks. I'm sorry I screwed up the last vote.

Eddie and Roland at the gas station

vs

Eddie and Roland at Balazar's.

sorry Tull, sorry Dixie Pig...you didn't get the votes.

I love the fight at the gas station, but the shoot-out at Balazar's is just so wonderful to me. It's all in the way Eddie steps up and surprises everyone by knocking some guys completely on their asses, and all while buck nekkid. Rock on, Eddie.

Balazar's. Both were great scenes but it was extra cool to see how well Eddie could fight before Roland trained him to be a gunslinger, not to mention that he did it without his clothes on.:shoot:

letti - that is the fucking funniest thing i think i've ever heard you say.
you totally rock!!!!!

but if i have to choose, it's gotta be a the fight with balazar. that took serious guts, considering eddie had no idea who roland was, roland had no idea who eddie was, and neither or them knew if they really could depend on each other. plus, let's face it, fighting naked - please.

It was a tough call. I thought originally I'd go with the Gas Station but then I thought about Eddie butt-nekkid, with a strange man in a room full of guns and Henry's decapitated head being lobbed into the room topped it off for me.

Sorry Gas Station fans. It was a really tough call!

It's 16:19 now. I am proud to say My vote took Balazar's to 19.

I loved the fight at Balazar's because it had action movie elements and real gunslinger moments, as well. Plus we see Eddie's mettle for real, I mean fighting with his precious bits dangling? C'mon!

Isn't that the moment of ultimate truth?
Nope. It is a interesting ocurrence. Probably happened at 3, 6, 7, or might even happen at 99.
Um, what a lot of work and a lot of time for a tie that could have been done at any random time.

Feev...I think I'm with you...I want to change my vote to Tull. :D

razz

It's a sign

Jean
06-21-2008, 07:18 AM
right

Monte: a tie at 2 or even 6 isn't a tie, it's something that may be merely accidental. when it's around 20, it rather means that this ratio would reproduce later on, and that any bias to one or the other side would, in its turn, be accidental. A tie seems what it actually is - a valid result; and a tie at 19 looks beautiful. As I said, however, the poll can be re-opened... till it ties again at 99

MonteGss
06-21-2008, 07:20 AM
Whatever you want, Jean. I have no authority or say in the matter.

I think it's dumb. There's no sign or purpose to it, it's a random tie.

Jean
06-21-2008, 07:22 AM
ok Monte, it was more like a joke anyway. I thought it was a beautiful moment that deserved to be stopped and marveled at, is all. I surely didn't want or expect anyone to take it too seriously. The poll is re-opened.

also, - I thought you knew? - all members have a say in whatever is going on around here

there are many sides to their relationships, but I, too, consider them friends first and foremost; and even it wasn't obvious before (which I believe it was), I think the Gas Station scene highlights this aspect like nothing else

I am beginning to think it could be a topic for a thread in Villagers. Monte? T/song?

FIRST POST WOO HOO!

Although we don't know many details of Jericho Hill I would still pick that as my favorite. I wish we could follow Rolands dreams in book 5 further and I have a feeling we will learn more of that battle in the comic books.

and Cullum! and the dialog! and the whole situation that lead to that! and it being amplified tenfold by our knowledge than the rest of the ka-tet are in trouble elsewhere! It's one of the most exciting, complex, and packed with various gems, pieces ever written - while Balazar's is... well, a good fight scene.

Actually, I just recently read the gas station scene (and it is quite great) and my fondness for The fight at Balazar's was cemented. I think we can all agree they were both pretty kickass.

They are both great scenes, and it says a lot that both final choices came down to scenes with Eddie and Roland. Ultimately, what I like more about the scene at Balazar's is that it took place before Eddie was a Gunslinger. We had no idea what to expect from Eddie as far as his battle skills. By the time the Gas Station came around, I knew full well that Eddie was one bad-mutha and not to be messed with. It was still great to experience, and Jean is right about how much the presence of Cullum adds to that scene, but for me the initial discovery of Eddie's courage and skill at the Leaning Tower is what makes that scene my favorite of the fight scenes.

You are absolutely right RoG, but for my part I love the gas station fight so much (even better than the one at Balazar) because the way Roland and Eddie worked together was... shocking. And brilliant. And beautiful. They were like one soul in two bodies. I was eating the pages and I was so proud of them both.
I was proud of Roland because he could find a new ka-brother and he taught him everything he needed to know about being a gunslinger.. and I was so proud of Eddie. When we first met him he was just a trembling junkie who could have killed for a shot... and he could get rid of the black monkey, moreover, he became a true gunslinger in a world where he was a forever stranger.

Well said indeed.

Also, at Balazars, even though he fought so well (for a man totally untried) he had some uncertainty during the fight, I seem to recall? (I need to re-read again soon!). And then at the end when they threw in Henry's head - Eddie just lost the plot. If not for Roland he was dead right there.

The Eddie at the Gas Station was a different man, a true Gunslinger.

exactly!

And, I'm not saying that the fight at Balazar's wasn't awesome. It was. I loved that, like jayson and others said, we didn't know what to expect from Eddie. He came out fighting when all the odds were against him. He fought and fought hard.

But the gas station scene is great, because we get to truly see how far Eddie and Roland have come as Gunslingers. We also see how far they have come as Ka-Tet.

I agree with the sentiments expressed by most of the people so far. The shootout at the gas station in Maine was brilliant, but the firefight between Eddie, Roland and Balazar's crew is simply incomparable. It's the most exciting action sequence I've ever come across in a work of fiction. If they ever tried to option The Drawing of the Three as a script that scene would be bigger than the pivotal scene in Eastern Promises.

C'mon Mordred, that's just nonsense. These are the two fights scenes as narrowed down by all of your wonderful peers here on the site. Don't segregate yourself, VOTE!! :)

Alright alright!! :)

But I can't vote for the gas station. I understand the scene, but it seems to much like a mid-80's Rambo movie. But I do like it because it does show (like most of the fight scenes) the skill of gunslingers and the ability to overcome unbelievable odds.

The fight at Balazar's I found more interesting. The close quarters gun play was excellent, also the simple fact that Roland was impressed that Eddie was fighting naked. Which also brings up the point that it was the first impression that we might get to see more gunslingers.

But they were both pretty good, just not my favorite

noooo...more like when grenades and machine guns and exploding gas pumps are involved rather than straight out gun play, then ya, it's like a rambo movie.

When young Roland, Alain, and Cuthbert are riding up on Jonas and all the guys piking them off and working as one soul, that's a gun fight. Or Roland taking on the entire town of Tull. That's true gunslinger skill. And in Balazar's office when Roland is still freshly dealing with only being able to use one hand, that's a gun fight.

Jean
09-28-2008, 11:28 PM
there was something of a Rambo movie about it, just like there was something of different cultural contexts in different parts of the saga; often they were intermingled in most unexpected ways, and I think that's the very point of the book.

I also like the the fight scene in the tunnel on the way to fedic (I think) when Roland and Eddie appear behind the guys that were chasing Jake and Oy from the Dixie pig. I think it was described as since each only had one gun, Roland would roll behind Eddie to reload while Eddie would take his six shots, then Eddie would roll behind Roland to reload while Roland did what he does best. I thought that was a classic tactical move.
