We recently have experienced a rash of spam.
Spammers are banned and their posts are deleted. If you see a spam post, please report the post, but refrain from commenting.
This way, when the spam posts are deleted, their won't be posts that are out of context to the thread.

What is the 'proper' way to report it?

There is a little "!" sign at the bottom left of every post. Basically the bottom of that area where your avatar is.

Click that on the offending post and you are good to go.

On the left side of the screen under the persons avatar click on the "Report Post" icon. The icon is a triangle with an exclamation in it.

I had to delete SPAM out of this very thread this morning.

Just so everyone knows, I am going to be implementing a couple of modifications that will help staff deal with the growing problem.

One of the modifications will alert the staff to posts that are made by SPAMMERS based on a criteria we set.

The other will be a one click process that bans the user, deletes the posts and or threads, and bans their IP address all in one click.

Obviously any new system is going to take a little getting used to so if you guys see anything amiss...please continue to report. :grouphug:

well, now here's a question. what about those people (like, say, me) who use rolling ip addresses? i had a problem once when my ip address went to renew itself and all of a sudden i couldn't send out emails because the ip address that it renewed to was banned by half the universe because a spammer had been using it. i had to go through this big long thing with my isp to straighten it out.

so will banning the spammer ip address impact us (us being people who have rolling ip addresses not static ip addresses) in anyway?

Its the great thing about being locally owned, if something like that happens, we can just up and fix it. Everyone has rolling IP address because of the nature of servers, this only bans the specific IP they are using not a range or anything like that.

So its far from common but on the outside chance it happens, we'll be here to fix it. :couple:

how can you tell a spam post is spam?

The Lady of Shadows
06-04-2008, 01:10 PM
nope, doesn't sound stupid at all. you won't be able to miss it because it has absolutely nothing to do with the thread, it's full of links, and it generally advertises something (like a game or something). i'll pm you an example if you'd like.

Does going off topic count as spam? for example we spoke of zombies in the "fear" thread, and ended up with rainbow cake.

Daghain
06-04-2008, 01:33 PM
It means spammers are generally not established members. They join and start spamming right off, which means they have a low post count. Part of the rules the spam program recognizes is know spam content + low post count.

Well, the director's can correct me if I'm wrong, but it's probably unnecessary anymore to use the report post button for spammers. It is still useful for if you have some other issue with a post though.

Spam is easier to control if you keep a tight lid on what online forms or email requests you give out.

I have one main email addy's and several less important ones. When I absolutley must give an e-mail address to someone I do not trust, I give a less important one and then momitor the reaction.

I get no spam in my main e-mail addy

Matt

We stop any automated SPAM bots flat on this site. They don't get past registration.

The problem is human SPAM'ers. Its a huge problem in the industry right now because China has 24 hr internet cafe's that pay almost nothing for people to sign up and do it. Our response has several levels.

-You have to reply to an email to register (simple for them)
-"Roland" is an automated user that qualifies posts from new members for specific criteria and then reports them to us. He's pretty good.
-Those posts are hidden from the members until one of us approves them
-The staff has a "one touch ban and clean" function that bans them, adds their IP to our list and deletes the post.

It works pretty well but is a full time job and this site is not alone. Research shows it happens to any really popular boards these days.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing Vast--this site is hosted remotely through a service which is really well protected so there is no way to hack the server itself.

The SPAM we are talking about is people who sign up on the board simply to do advertising. Since I do not actually own the hardware the site sits on, I'm not sure those will help.

The "open" nature of our forum means that its pretty easy to get past is you are an actual person. Closing it up anymore would stop legitimate people from signing up which is exactly what I don't want.

VastOne
08-27-2008, 12:59 PM
What I mean is that if it is a Unix based e-mail system, there is a very good spam blocking tool that should be employed there and it is also free. If you are not the hands on folks, then it would be a question to you hosting facility....

Spam blocking is based on pattern matching that happens before an e-mail reaches a recipient. These patterns setup in a global black list, which is also free.

In theory, if a tool is used at the e-mail level, even if a user signed in to Spam, you would be able to eliminate it even within your organization. I have worked with many non for profit organizations who have had these same issues and were able to eliminate them. It is a matter of having the right tools for the job, and from what I see here on the site, it appears to be a Unix based system with a Unix based e-mail back end. And with the free tools used for spam, it should be able to help you.

Not worth much, but just my 1 1/2 cents worth...

Matt
08-27-2008, 01:05 PM
Thanks Maerlyn

I understand what you mean Vast. Basically you are saying that people using an email that was classified as SPAM would somehow not get the registration from the site?

And in that way, never be allowed to register?

I would be concerned about the reliability of something like that as I hate to allow automation to make a decision. It seems like (in a lot of cases) those automated systems exclude huge parcels of email address that include millions of legitimate ones.

VastOne
08-27-2008, 01:28 PM
Nope, I am saying that even if a person was registered, all e-mail sent within the organization and from outside, would be gauged and if it is deemed spam based on your blacklisted or your own created criteria, would fail to deliver even within the registered user base.

And it is not total automation, it is a registered black listing based on keywords and patterns that you can control. So if for example, in this email I suddenly started VIAGRA CHEAP, GET YOUR MASTERCARD NOW, See HAWAII FREE, this message would never get to you, or could be sent to another folder for you to decide for yourself if it is spam or can be sent to an admin folder for an admin to determine. And based on certain criteria, they could be deleted immediately.

Better description? I hope so because I do not mean to cause more confusion....

Matt
08-27-2008, 01:32 PM

Nope, I am saying that even if a person was registered, all e-mail sent within the organization and from outside, would be gauged and if it is deemed spam based on your blacklisted or your own created criteria, would fail to deliver even within the registered user base.

This would be the problem with the system. We are not having a problem with SPAM emails being sent to or from members within the organization. Our SPAM consists of people signing up and posting adds on the site.

Roland works much the same way you describe but putting in a system that will stop SPAM emails from coming or going would not solve the problem.

But I really appreciate the suggestion.

Matt,

Appreciate the reply and will further and finally suggest that you are not an island here and that this issue can easily be solved. The mail that a new user signing up can even be segmented or isolated (only that mail), and if you are using a hosted service, this should be a standard setup, especially if you are paying for it.

I will now bow out...but please do not ever hesitate to contact me on any technical questions....21 years of experience and I am a freebie

There have been so many Spammers this week, I've had to remve the "welcome new members" section of my radio show :(

I know, its been horrible.

Which is why I went to the next step. I have just installed a product called...

vbStopForumSpam

This new SPAM has caused such a problem with forum owners that some have opted to block IP address from entire countries!! :wtf:

We haven't gone that far but this new product is going to be in the registration process. It stops registration long enough (few seconds) to poll and outside database for their IP, email and username. The database itself is housed at StopForumSPam.com and is added to by forum owners all over the world.

A log is kept so we will be able to see who it refused entry to and reach out to any that seem to be a mistake, but from what I have read, this seems to work pretty well.

If StopForumSpam.com is down for some reason, it allows the registration. So we are still going to be cleaning up a little. The goal is to catch them before they get here.

If some slip past, we will be reporting them back to the database to help fill it.

All other SPAM measures will stay in place as it looks like a layered approach has the best success.

<---loves it when he has a bit of time to look into stuff. :pirate:

so your saying it records IP adresses of known spammers? and uses it to block those same spammers from the site?! W00t!

Matt

Pretty much. I have to manually report any that slip by to make our contribution to the overall database.

And...It already stopped one.

The product was turned on at

9:15 EST--we may have a few registered before that so a little clean up for a few days. They sometimes hide after registration. But should be no new ones.

Our newest member passed its little test so it seems to be legitimately working.

I notice a majority of the spam seems to originate in Afghanistan :orely:

Not sure there would've been time, Matt - I checked the user list almost immediately. No biggie, I guess - just figured I should report it since I hadn't heard of spam PMs before! :)

You underestimate the speed of some of the staff at catching these.

Al Quaeda isn't the force it once was. They've been reduced to spamming the internet as a way of getting to the infidels.

Yes, you can, but of course we'll probably have to ban you immediately if you do. I have suspected you were a spammer for several months now....almost a year. :P

Is that the flag of Afganistan then? I vote we ban any new people using it, UNLESS they can answer a trivia question like ...from what novel is the line The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.

that's odd, since i only actually been an active member for 6 or 7 months
but yes, i am a spammer, there have been subliminal messages in every post I've made (can you spot the sarcasm in that sentence?)

Brice

Sarcasm???

Your join date was November 2007. It's now October 2008. It looks like I was right.

Or what is the square root of -1?

that's why i said ACTIVE, i didn't start contributing to the site until March or April. I hid in the riddles thread, and played in the arcade for the first four or five months

Razz has been engaged in a (not-so)subliminal campaign to make us all watch Dr. Who. :P

that's not my only plan! In 3 days, Zion will be destroyed. and the only person who can stop them is in the "On your mind" thread practicing his "I have no facial expression" expression!

Sorry to double post, but more info

31 out of sixty new members have been rejected since I turned it on and everyone of this is an obvious spammer.

"sex" in the member name or something like that.

well it saves time, trouble, and of course, our Boss Man's sanity, so it must be great!

Thanks for adding that, Matt. Monday at work I was bored (luckily) and I literally would ban one, move the thread to the main spam thread, and another one would pop up. I think I spent a good 2 hours straight banning people. It was CRAZY.
