"I'm the Doctor by the way, what's your name"
"Rose?"
"Nice to meet you Rose, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!"
except i'm gonna change the names, ask random people, and have my friend dressed in a gorilla suite chasing people.

I loved Blink! An unusual and genuinely creepy episode. Interesting to have guest characters actually take the main role and place the main characters in the background too.

The episodes written by Moffat seem particularly good.

what was a pretty funny one was the one with the group of people trying to meet the doctor. then they show up in the end. the one with the absorbaloff thing. the one drawn by a six year old for a contest.

Right. The monster was played by comedian Peter Kay.

Quite brave to slip in an oral sex gag in a family show too (although they did it in such a way kids probably wouldn't get it.)

Wait until you see the upcoming episode, The Doctor's Daughter. The eponymous character is played by the doctor's daughter -- that is Peter Davison's daughter, and she's a cutie. Apparently she tried out for the role of Rose.

Blink is one of my favorite Doctor episodes. It shows how to do scary in a very subtle way.

It was SciFi channel's episode "The Poison Sky" (which is really sort of part 2 of "The Sontaran Strategem"). I think the other foreshadowing was in "The Fires of Pompeii".

I am under the impression that David Tennant is on for at least one more season, although the rumor is it will be a mini-season to give the actors a chance to pursue other interests (filiming is 9 months a year).

If that's right, then we have this season and at least 5 more eps from the next one. I can't imagine that they would actually KILL the Doctor off, maybe this particular incarnation, but not totally. Besides by Time Lord law, or science or whathaveyou, doesn't he have 2 or 3 more lives anyway?

And It Cuts Like A Knife
She's Out Of My Life

It's Out Of My Hands
It's Out Of My Hands
To Think For Two Years She Was Here
And I Took Her For Granted I Was So Cavalier
Now The Way That It Stands
She's Out Of My Hands

So I've Learned That Love's Not Possession
And I've Learned That Love Won't Wait
Now I've Learned That Love Needs Expression
But I Learned Too Late

She's Out Of My Life
She's Out Of My Life
Damned Indecision And Cursed Pride
Kept My Love For Her Locked Deep Inside
And It Cuts Like A Knife
She's Out Of My Life

In spite of your vote for the Dixie Pig (:D ), I shall answer by pasting the following from the wiki on Doctor Who (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who):

As a Time Lord, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate his body when near death. Introduced into the storyline as a way of continuing the series when the writers were faced with the departure of lead actor William Hartnell in 1966, it has continued to be a major element of the series, allowing for the recasting of the lead actor when the need arises. The serial The Deadly Assassin established that a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times, for a total of thirteen incarnations (although at least one Time Lord, The Master, has managed to circumvent this). To date, the Doctor has gone through this process and its resulting after-effects on nine occasions, with each of his incarnations having his own quirks and abilities but otherwise sharing the memories and experience of the previous incarnations:

First Doctor, played by William Hartnell (1963–1966)
Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton (1966–1969)
Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee (1970–1974)
Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker (1974–1981)
Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison (1981–1984)
Sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker (1984–1986)
Seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy (1987–1989, 1996)[42][43][44]
Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann (1996)
Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston (2005)
Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant (2005–present)
Other actors have also played the Doctor, though rarely more than once (see the list of actors who have played the Doctor).

Despite these shifts in personality, the Doctor remains an intensely curious and highly moral adventurer who would rather solve problems with his wits than by using violence.

I do like Tennant because of the slightly homicidal side to him. When we met Eccleston he was just coming off seeing his world destroyed, he was dark, but more in a sad way.

Tennant came in as a more "fun", "light hearted" Doctor, but when you cross him, or any of the humans he has grown to care about, he becomes near maniacal. God help any body who crosses Tennant's Doctor.

GAH! You caught me. It was more than 25, but it did sum up the Time Lord life cycle neatly.

The Lady of Shadows
06-04-2008, 04:44 PM
but why can he regenerate when he's near death? and how did he get the ability? did all time lords have it or just him - the doctor?

(and did you notice my use of the past tense there? see, i know his world was destroyed and that he's the last time lord. aren't you proud of me?)

Woofer
06-04-2008, 05:55 PM
Yes! Very proud. You will love the doctor, yet!

As for regeneration, it's a property of the Time Lord race which enables them to live for centuries. I'm not sure how they developed the ability, though. They don't even have to be near death; they can do it at will. It's considered genetic reshuffling. It's actually pretty cool.

razz
06-04-2008, 06:20 PM
I'm not sure, but i think Timelords can live a tremendous amount of time without regenerationg. The Master Aged the Doctor 1000 years. so they can probably live about that long before regenerating.

The Lady of Shadows
06-04-2008, 08:11 PM

I thought that they did? At the beginning of the season, just not at Christmas.

My love went back to London to visit family for Christmas so I got the Christmas special as a speccial little gift from him. (& a lot of cool not found in the US type Doctor Stuff).

The Master is supposedly the only other Time Lord in existence. As when we met the new incarnations of the Doctor, he thought he was the ONLY one left..., But yes, he did "beat the system" in order to gain extra regenerations...however, Classic DW has us believing he was dead once and for all, and obviously not the case.

In retrospect with turtlesong getting all this other info I guess the spoiler wasn't a spoiler, but I'm keeping it marked anyway....

I think you are VERY right. In the classic series when he was "killed" "once and for all" his essence or soul or what-have-you was actually contained in something (can't remember what now) so it is VERY possible that his essence was contained in the ring. Also they insinuate heavily that the Master's wife, who were are led to believe is reformed, is the one to pick it up after his body is burned...me thinks it was all part of his plan...

Watched Turn Left this evening. Bear in mind, I haven't watched Dr Who since Peter Davison was the Doctor, so I had to wing it as far as the plot went...but bloody good stuff!

The acting was a bit shite in parts...well, dunno, Catherine Tate was awesome but some people were a bit wooden - then again that could be the script and not them, because I watched Torchwood once and found that the same. Its got a real 1980's bbc drama feel to it, but all the same I was quite riveted and now I have to watch it next week.

Apart from anything else, I've gotta support Miss Piper - she went to my school (my sisters year, I'm older).

*clears throat* So, uhm, new episode Friday night. :excited: <---me I was semi-glad we didn't have one this past Friday because I do so love to watch the pretty sparklies in the sky. We don't have TiVo or DVR, so it would be old school VHS taping otherwise.

this is one of the times i hate America. stupid independence? why did we have to toss that damn tea? then we could ALL be British, drink tea, have horribly odd teeth, and watch doctor who on a july fourth, or on schedule
I for one prefer coffee to tea, although my londoner man has gotten me int oa little earl grey to relax with.

And he has great teeth--naturally. So there.

Have you guys caught up yet and seen the final episode yet??
Liked Bernard Cribbins' guest role as Donna's grandad in the last season. He played the Doctors assistant once before in the film Dalek Invasion Earth 2150AD in 1966. We've had K9 and Sarah Jane Smith making returns, now they should bring back 'Bessie' the Doctors car. Any suggestions for other characters or aliens to make a return?

I think the Doctor should have taken Donna's grandfather out for a spin in the TARDIS. No one would appreciate it more. He was a great character. Maybe the Doctor could go in for a geriatric companion?

Yes, he did, and no he didn't.

They are all wearing gasmasks and the Doctor looks at (can't remember who) and says "Are you my mummy?" and the person gets angry and tells him to be serious.

Donna's grampa makes it out okay in the end.

Is there really going to be...
a new doctor? I like this one!

Well... if he dies, he'll regenerate and with regeneration there's a rearranging of cells. Thus, the new form will not look like the old (pretty convenient for changing lead actors). David Tennant said he was leaving after this season, so I suspect it's for real. Also, this season there've been 5 or 6 hints that he would be dying soon. I hope not, too, as I also like Tennant as the Doctor.

So there you go.

OMG I am soooo happy. So does that mean that they're leading up to Rose returning as the doctor's companion? I guess this would explain the weirdness with the scenes from next week and Donna appearing to undergo the regen process (and also the many references to her being special in the universe). I haven't looked up info this season because I didn't want to spoiler myself, so I am clueless to these new developments, such as Tennant staying on for another seaseon. That makes me a very happy Woofer - at least as far as Doctor Who goes.

Bev Vincent
07-26-2008, 09:29 AM
Rose isn't returning, for reasons you'll discover in the finale. There's been no word yet on who will be the new companion. I'd vote for either Donna's grandfather (!!) or Sally Sparrow from the epsiode Blink. Of course, there's always River Song (from the library series) and the doctor's daughter.

You guys seen the second half yet? (I saw it a couple of weeks back, but I live in England.)

I mostly liked it, but the bit with the tardis towing the earth home was rather cheesy. Also, interesting but sad twist with what happened to Donna.

And yes Tennant is back. He'll be focussing on Hamlet next year though, so there won't be a full series, but there will be a few specials.
The Cybermen are back for the Christmas episode. I've also heard that the doctor's daughter will be back from one of the specials, but that might just be rumor.

Then Steven Moffat takes over from Russell T Davies (which I think it is a good thing as his episodes tend to be rather good. Not that Davies did a bad job, in fact he did a fine job in bringing Who back. I'm not all that keen on his plot-lines though, although his character writing is good.)

Apologies if this has been mentioned already earlier in the thread. I haven't been to this thread for a while, and I didn't read it all the way through.

Oh, and as for the Doctor referring to himself as 'Doctor Who', I haven't seen all that many of the earlier series and films (I wasn't much of a fan of Who as a kid, although I like the new series.) However, I don't think he did refer to himself by that name outside the films, but I could be wrong. 'Who' isn't his name, it's more a question, as in, 'Who is he?'

David Tennant quits as Doctor Who (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7698539.stm)

David Tennant is to stand down as Doctor Who, after becoming one of the most popular Time Lords in the history of the BBC science fiction show.

Tennant stepped into the Tardis in 2005, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year.

He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards.

"When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me," he said.

"Now don't make me cry," he added. "I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair."

There's a video interview with him at the link. It's a real trip to hear his natural speaking voice -- the thick Scottish accent! --bv

Just Read This and Thought of you all : Guess it's official now.

LONDON – Britain's best-known time traveler is ending his journey.

The BBC has announced that Scottish actor David Tennant will leave long-running science fiction series "Doctor Who" in just over a year.

Tennant has played the show's time- and space-traveling alien hero since 2005. He will appear in a Christmas special and four hour-long episodes to be aired in 2009 and early 2010. But he said Wednesday that when the series returns for a full season in 2010, "it won't be with me."

"This show has been so special to me," Tennant said. "I don't want to outstay my welcome."

"Doctor Who" was first broadcast in 1963 and is one of the BBC's longest-running and most popular programs. Tennant is the 10th actor to play the title character, who has the power to regenerate in a new body.

Classically trained Tennant, 37, is currently starring in Shakespeare's "Hamlet" for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

But now what the fuck am I going to do?!?!? I have to wait until at least Tuesday or Wednesday to watch any of season two since I actually have to order them instead of watching them online. Shit shit shit. :panic:

Also, I want to read this thread. But I won't. Because I don't want to fuck anything up.
Okay. See you soon. :D
Yeah the guy in the next season is SO much better :P

I have a problem.

Thanks to all of the people on here who talk about Doctor Who all the time, I thought I'd check it out.
So I did, and hey, just my luck - Netflix had the whole first season online to view instantly.
So I watched it. In two days.
And I like it a whole fucking lot.

I'm not sure how I feel about David yet. Granted I've only seen him for a brief moment (New Teeth. That's weird.) and I'm sure I'll like him in time, but for now I'm just wierded out by the fact that Chris is no longer around.

We shall see. :)

do they sell doctor who on dvd? an if so where does one unfamiliar with it start?

razz

unless you want ot go back to the waaaaay beginning (like 1920 or something), start with Doctor Who Series One
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0009AK57Y.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

then series Two

THEY'RE ANNOUNCING THE NEW DOCTOR TOMORROW!!!!!!!!

:excited: :panic: :excited: :panic: :excited: :panic: :excited:

New Doctor Who to be announced tomorrow

After months of furious speculation over who will replace David Tennant as the new Doctor Who, the BBC is set to reveal all tomorrow.

And in a remarkable bit of chutzpah - and confidence that the name will not leak before 5.35pm on Saturday, January 3 - the new doctor will be unveiled during a BBC1 Doctor Who Confidential special that will also be simulcast on the corporation's big outdoor screens in city centres around the country.

The Beeb is set to air an interview with the new timelord in a show, called Doctor Who Confidential - The Eleventh Doctor.

.....

According to a post on the Doctor Who Online forum on New Year's Eve, Davison said that the new doctor would be announced at the end of the show tomorrow, although "it is not someone you will have heard of", he is reported to have said.

Whole article here (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/organgrinder/2009/jan/02/new-doctor-who).

I've been reading all sorts of speculation opinions and I guess the BBC said that tonight will the actor playing the role will be giving "his or her initial reaction to being the new, 11th incarnation of one of television's most loved characters," implying that it could be a woman!
That'd be interesting... Not sure how I feel about that...
