Cool! Happy Birthday to Diem...though if I was with you I'd sing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjp7D0SW-9k rather than Happy Birthday, being as its the best programme to ever come out of Australia.

ZoNeSeeK
07-12-2007, 02:58 PM
whos janet frame?

Janet Paterson Frame ONZ, CBE, (August 28, 1924 - January 29, 2004), a New Zealand author, wrote eleven novels, four collections of short stories, a book of poetry, a children's book, and a three-volume autobiography.

Famous for both her prose and her life story - she escaped lobotomy as a falsely-diagnosed mental patient only by receiving a literary prize just in time - she became a very private person in later life. This relates to her 1958 decision to change her name by deed poll to Nene Janet Paterson Clutha. Frank Sargeson praised her prose as possessing a "frightening clarity of perception", though her novels eschewed traditional New Zealand literary realism for a more magical style.[1]

Nah she was a kiwi. We steal all their decent people anyway.

Oh, long story. And it's not easy to say bad things about your own country.
But if I didn't belong to someone who I love a lot I don't think I would be here. I don't say I would go and I would never come back... in fact I love this country a lot. It's beautiful.
But I am sure without him I wouldn't be here.

Odetta
09-13-2007, 06:27 AM
I think everyone feels that way at points in their lives... wanting to leave your own country to see what's out there for opportunity. At least we are women living in countries where we CAN leave... because we have the same opportunities as men do.

I didn't know you guys marked today - its called Rememberance Day over here - do you wear poppies and leave poppy wreaths at the war memorials? We do, plus the local army base do a procession to leave wreaths at the memorial in the village.

So you'll have to deal with that.

Nope.

Due South.

Although, I looked over a geneology chart one of my distant relatives sent to my family a few weeks ago and I do think one of my ancestors lived in Quebec for a time. I think she met someone from the House of Hanover/Windsor-it might have even been the Queen-who was touring the Commonwealth.

No, I meant that there was a bunch of videos uploaded to YT showing the Canadian Forces deployed by NATO in Afghanistan doing all sorts of cool shit, which I would otherwise post.

I know someone from Ontario who's in the reserves and used to post those all the time on an old website we both belonged to, but he's kind of dropped off the face of the planet lately.

This outlines a few of the things, from a Canadian perspective. :D

In light of the fact that the United States and the United Kingdom both think it is important to have dominance over each other, Canada would like to politely (as always) point out, that, despite your differences, you both have a backwards way of doing things. Since Canada is largely ignored among the other 2 countries, both the UK and US will have a new optional (we wouldn't force anything on anyone) course in schools on how Canada has used the best parts of both cultures to create a better place. Even though it is optional we assume you both want to improve. You both clearly have a lot to learn.

If we were to annex either of you, Ottawa (not Toronto) would be your capital.

A questionnaire will be circulated in both countries to determine how much either of you actually know about Canada. We share a border with the US and the Queen is still at the top of our parliamentary system but despite that, ignorance of Canada runs rampant in BOTH countries. No, we don't all live in perpetual cold with snow every day of the year.

The following should be noted about Canada:

1. Here in Canada the metal known as Aluminum/Aluminium can be said either way. For proof, listen to the Barenaked Ladies song titled Aluminum. They are an excellent band and largely unrecognized in either the UK or the US.

Language and speech is an organic structure. Arguing that one country has a better way of saying things is like arguing that Chicago is better than New York or that London is better than Edinburgh. All our big cities are better anyway.

2. The word 'unite' is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as:

- verb - 1. come or bring together for a common purpose or to form a whole. 2. archaic join in marriage.

- DERIVATIVES - 1. united, adjective. 2. unitive, adjective.

— ORIGIN - Latin - unire ‘join together’, from unus ‘one’.

In the case of the 'United' States of America, there is a gross fallacy. Since Canada and Mexico are nation states on the continent of North America (not to mention the fact that South America is part of the Americas), this is obviously a very pretentious name for a country. We resent the fact that you assume that you are the only country to exist in America, or that Canada and Mexico are really part of your country. We don't even have a star on the flag.

The 'United' Kingdom is just as bad. We argue that there is no unity in the UK. The Scottish and the Welsh would rather be their own countries. You let the Irish go (with the exception of Northern Ireland), how about the other two and a half? Your Kingdom is clearly not 'United'.

Canada is a native Canadian word for village or settlement. How easy is that.

3. We acknowledge that some Canadians say 'eh' but find it hard to understand why this is so important to mention when talking about Canadians. Some people from the US say 'y'all' while some people from the UK say 'aks' instead of 'ask' but we feel these things are not relevant or indicative of those people. The fact that you have to mention 'eh' seems to indicate that you are looking for something to fault us for. If 'eh' is the only thing you have got against us, well then go ahead, keep talking about it. We don't care.

4. Good movies DO come out of Canada. Titanic, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and A History of Violence to name a few. We as Canadians bet that 97.75% of both your populations had no idea any of those movies came out of Canada.

5. The national animal of Canada is the beaver, we've got lots of them. The national animal of the US is the bald eagle. There are more bald eagles on Vancouver Island than there are in the US. The national animal of the UK is the lion. The only lions in the UK live in zoos.

6. The 'American' in 'American Football' is used to differentiate it from 'Canadian Football" as well as 'European Football'. Canadians play with a longer field and three downs instead of 4 making it more challenging, and we play with 12 players instead or 11 making plays more diverse.

Canada women's national soccer team is currently ranked 9th in the world and the Canadian women's team place second in U-19. Admittedly the men can't play very well, but they try hard. We also try very hard at Rugby, but very rarely succeed. Mainly, we just don't care how good we are, because deep down WE LOVE TO BE CANADIAN. And because Canada dominates at two sports. Hockey and Lacrosse. We pretty much invented both sports. Enough said.

7. In Canada, guns don't really matter when you have people like Jean Chrétien, a former Prime Minister, who simply punches people in the face when they attack him. And no, Jean Chrétien isn't still our Prime Minister.

8. Contrary to popular belief, Canada celebrates its own independence from Britain on July 1st. It has nothing to do with the American holiday on July 4th. It is important to note that Canada achieved peaceful independence. The Queen and Pierre Elliot Trudeau got together, had some Timmies, signed a few papers and it was done. And no, Trudeau isn't still our Prime Minister. But we wish he was.

9. Roundabouts ARE stupid. They are for people who have a round about way of doing things and who like to drive in circles at extreme speeds all day and never get anywhere. Traffic lights are much more efficient, safe and orderly. Additionally, driving on the left side of the road indicates that there is some sort of inferiority complex at hand. The rest of the world drives on the right hand side of the road, why shouldn't you?

Don't think we let the Americans of the hook. Oh no.

The imperial system is by far the most outdated, useless, inefficient scientific tool for measuring that ever existed. The continued use of this system in the US can only be explained as sheer stupidity.

We take whats best and make it better.

10. Whether you call them French fries, crisps, chips, or deep fried potatoes, they are only delicious served one way, with gravy and cheese curds. We call this poutine. For those of you who don't know, it is pronounced poo-teen. It looks like hell but tastes like heaven. Don't pretend to understand Canada until you have tried this fantastic Québécois style food. It will clog your arteries like nothing else, and you will love it.

11. Drink all the tea you want. Tim Horton's coffee will always be better.

12. Molson Canadian is Canada's beer. Its not the best but it does us proud. We like a whole lot of different beers here in Canada and we pride ourselves on being connoisseurs rather than pretentious snobs who turn up their noses at anything but the local brew. Everyone has got different tastes, and how bored would you be of beer if you had to drink the same brew all the time. Also, a little bit of urine helps to remind us how good the good stuff really is. Where would your egos be if there wasn't some lesser quality stuff to put yours above?

13. It does not matter if you call it gasoline or petrol, its way to expensive and its causing a lot of problems. Everyone should sell their cars so that we are no longer an oil dependent world. Ride your bicycle, take the train or bus, or heaven forbid, stretch the old legs, burn some carbs and lose some weight by walking. This may cause problems in Canada because geographically speaking we are bigger than both your countries combined. We don't need to compensate.

14. On the guns issue, we side with the British. Plain and simple. "Apes with guns kill people."

15. Princess Diana may very well have been the face of a generation but she is dead and she needs to rest in peace. There is no conspiracy. Just. Let. It. Go.

And seriously, who killed JFK?

16. One Loonie should be payed to Canada for each British and American citizen because clearly you are all loony for not doing it our way. Additionally, each wrong answer on the aforementioned questionnaire will cost $10, whenever you have it handy. That's roughly 4 squid, I mean quid.

most surfers spend oodles of time and money flitting around the globe surfing in the renowned spots, diem's dad has surfed his whole life and has gone on plenty of trips - indonesia, hawaii, south africa etc - he went to cornwall but there was some inconvenient blizzard or whatever and he didn't end up surfing. Awwww shucks, I can't resist an unconditional smooch

Also I am so glad to see that Muse made #1 on the Triple J hottest 100 (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/) this year! My post from yesterday was fulfilled! Although a bit dissapointed to see Operator please didn't crack the top 20.
Oh well. Happy Austalia Day to all!

I'm quite tanked right now. I maybe had one or two many too Fosters today while cooking my shrimps (read - prawns) on the barbie!

And no I wasn't really drinking Fosters. We export that shit so we don't have to drink it!

Bah, damn bears…sitting there in their bigass vast country making their little hand motions…thinking they’re safe from invasion. Hey, just because Napoleon, Hitler, and a handful of dumb Teutonic knights couldn’t pull it off doesn’t mean a damn thing! You just watch your big furry ass or you’ll be on the invasion list, pal!

Oh wait, lemme check the list...you might already be on it.

*turns back a few loosely stapled and wrinkled papers*

Ah...nevermind. You're already penciled in for 2011.

Are you sure you're joking? You know us mexicans really do walk around singing mariachi music and eating tacos....

And growing cacti and eating limes and playing the marraccas and making pinadas and pumping out lots of low-grade coke and you've all got little brown hearts. This is what Nando tells me so it must be true :D

The only thing thats really true about aussies is we're all alcoholics :) And i was serious about the opening ceremony, they had a big Man from Snowy River themed part in it with lots of stockmen on horses. Ill try and find a clip.

This situation in Zimbabwe is chillingly dire. The international community is waiting for Africa to act, but its clear that Africa has neither the ability or the desire to prevent a humanitarian disaster in one of its neighbours. How much coverage is this getting in northern hemisphere nations? And how many African countries need to go through massive political or ethnic genocides before anyone will actually give a shit?

ManOfWesternesse

If you're foreign, am I domestic?

Damn-if-i-know Daghain! Maybe we're all foreign!

Zone, yes. EVERY time there's a major crisis in Africa the world is too slow to react. Zimbabwe is bad now & it's gonna get a lot worse (Mugabe will run out the terror-police for a few months now - cow the opposition - & steal the run-off election. And the world will let him.)

Hopefully with the amount of media attention and the pressure put on the SADC will pay off.

Zone, I hear about it a great deal on the BBC world report which airs on NPR (National Public Radio) late every night. It sounds like Europe is more concerned with it than America, but I can't say for sure bc I don't watch TV. Also, most of the international news is being overshadowed by the democratic primary right now. Americans are generally selfish as well, and can't see past the stock numbers or gas prices. America is the embodiment of ethnocentrism in most cases, and unfortunately, this includes Zimbabwe.

obscurejude

Also, I subscribe to Newseek (a national news magazine) and it hasn't mentioned much about anything other than the primaries.

Yeah the NYTimes generally has articles about US interests only - internal stuff & mid east stuff. I mean most papers are like this but we always seem to get alot of Africa and Asia news here. US gets more central and south america, though.
