That's strange! He must have restarted with the idea entirely. He's written in the past that both The Cannibals and Under The Dome had been lost.

From SKMB Mod

He doesn't know when Under the Dome will be finished. It's already "very long" and he doesn't see an end in sight. When it will be published hasn't been discussed but chances are it won't be next year as obviously the first draft has to be completed before editing and production work can begin.

:panic: I can't wait until 2010 for a new King book! I hope there will be something in the interim, like the separate release of "Throttle" and maybe another surprise book or two.

I wrote just about this subject before, actually:

A very long book akin to The Stand or It is very welcome, but Duma Key wasn't a chapbook either. So I'm very glad for Stephen and his prolific output year after year, with no signs of slowing down. We now have two books in 2008, and perhaps this Stand/It book will come out in 2009, and, knowing King, perhaps another little surprise in between. Has there ever been a year with no book by Stephen King since 1974? Let's see... Only three: 1976, 1988, 2000. If you count non-fiction, then 1988 and 2000 are out. What did King do in 1976, take a sabbatical? :)

Mr. Rabbit Trick

What did King do in 1976, take a sabbatical? :)

Wrote 'The Shining', published 3 short stories in 3 different magazines, and released a film of 'Carrie'.

Slow year for him :)

Under the Dome is getting longer.... from SKMB.

Steve has wanted to keep details to himself until the novel is closer to publication. He's still working on it and it's now well over 1,100 manuscript pages long; he's thinking it will probably be at least 1,800 before he's done but that's as much as I am at liberty to tell you.

Bev Vincent

The final three books of the Dark Tower series were 2500 pages in manuscript in total. A lot depends on the design and layout of the final book, but that should give you a ballpark idea of what to expect.

just some quick math on the subject of length given to us by lilja. if we take the ratio of 2500 (total pages of final three DT volume's manuscripts)/ 1999 (edited pages of trade paperback editions [1999? niiiiice]) to 1100 Under the dome pages over x, we get about 864 trade paperback ed pgs for UtD (which is very close to the number of pages in the hardcover). if we use 1800/x, the number is about 1440. either way, the lookin's good.

16 pounds... about 7kgs, for a manuscript?
Lets take of half of it, cause probably aint printed both sides of a paper...

a book of 3.5 kg? my gosh!
CANT WAIT :-)

jhanic
08-21-2008, 09:38 AM
According to Bev Vincent (on his webpage), 16 pounds comes to about 1600 manuscript pages. He said the last three volumes of The Dark Tower series came to about 2500 manuscript pages. So Under The Dome could be about 2/3 the size of those three books combined. A massive book!

John

Bev Vincent
08-21-2008, 09:58 AM
16 lbs, which is probably about 1600 pages.

mae
08-22-2008, 11:16 AM
So a regular printed hardcover would be approximately how many pages then?

jhanic
08-22-2008, 11:28 AM
According to Bev Vincent, the last three DT books worked out to about 2500 manuscript pages, which amounted to about 2000 pages in the trade editions. So that's probably about 1280 pages for Under the Dome (4/5ths).

That "dome" (a forcefield?) must be mysterious. Seems like King expanded the tale, so there must be many other things. Probably supernatural.

Matt
08-23-2008, 07:38 AM
I think "dome" might refer to a sanctuary type situation in a natural disaster a la "superdome"

bluelph24
08-23-2008, 08:10 AM
Did anyone listen to Sk's reading of the first chapter at that CSPAN "The Three Kings" Him, Tabby, and Owen? It was good, but the "dome" sounded like maybe someone (or something, perhaps....) (or maybe it just happened) lowered a dome around a small town, cutting a woodchuck (poor lil guy, if he was just a few feet in either direction...) in half and making a plane crash.

Matt
08-23-2008, 08:21 AM

bluelph24
08-23-2008, 08:50 AM
maybe it wasn't the three kings event. But those three were there, at the library of congress (i believe) there was a q&a and they each read a little something. King read the woodchuck bit. The video's on cspan. i'll find a link.

[EDIT] Found it http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/index.php?main_page=product_video_info&products_id=204835-1 Just push the big red button on the right side of the screen. should start playing. Also, the chapter starts about 44 min 20 sec into it.

Yes, I recall that. In fact, it was originally entitled simply The Cannibals. But surely most of the plot has changed. I can't see such a long novel being set in just an apartment building.

I think the scope of the book will cover more than an apartment building, especially with 1200+ pages!

Update from the Mod at SKMB:

It was sent to the publisher and his editor right after he finished it the middle of August. I haven't seen any feedback from them yet but that isn't unusual. They may have sent it directly to him. He hasn't mentioned working on the edits based on their suggestions, though. The last thing he'd mentioned to me about writing was that he had been working on the rewrite of The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and another project that I can't give details about at this time.

Some more info from Ms. Mod over at the official forum:

I asked Steve if he would give me a synopsis to post but he says he's not ready to release any information just yet. I mentioned the Simpsons episode but he hasn't seen that so can't say if it's anything like his book, but also mentioned that the seed of the idea for his story was planted a long time ago--long before the Simpsons episode. He said to compare different pieces of work to snowflakes--they may all be snowflakes, but they're each unique.

The manuscript is 1500 pages--that's single-sided, double-spaced, so the finished volume will be closer to 1000 or so depending upon font size/style and how much editing is done. Still a very long book but don't be expecting 1500 pages in the final print version.

From USA Weekend

Stephen King has gone multimedia. "N.," one of the tales in the best-selling author's latest short story collection, "Just After Sunset," was turned into an original Web video series in conjunction with Marvel Comics. The collaboration has inspired King, 61; he's thinking about doing a YouTube video for his novel "Under the Dome," out later this year. Such projects are definitely fun, King says. "But with all these multimedia things, the story is the story still, the book is the book, and that's the source material. As J.R.R. Tolkien might say, 'That's the one ring.' It rules the other one."

He was probably also inspired by his friend Michael Connelly, who released a dramatization of the first two chapters of his most recent novel to help promote it.

Plot Synopsis for Under the Dome

Posted on: March 20th, 2009 1:44:21 pm
We've received permission to release the official copy from Simon & Schuster for the plot synopsis for Under the Dome. Here's your first peek at the story line:
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mills, Maine, the town is
inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible
force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a
gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running
errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars
explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came
from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with
a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s
assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them
stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to
hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark
pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just
short. It’s running out.

I really really hope that's the final image, and the author and title will just replace SCRIBNER FALL 2009, and they won't paste a huge STEPHEN KING UNDER THE DOME in simple block letters as they did with Duma Key.

I think it makes the novel seem like a sci-fi novel, so maybe there'll be a sci-fi element as well, a sort of cross-breed of The Tommyknockers and The Stand, maybe.

No, it's just conceptual art that they used for the catalog since they hadn't decided on the finalized art. I expect the "collector's edition" will have artwork very similar to the trade edition, as with Just After Sunset.

It may just be me, but JAS had a boring cover. It fit the title, but was boring overall. The pic for Under the Dome just doesn't look like a King cover. It reminds me more of the paperback cover art for James Morrow's books instead.

Via Lilja.

Dan Simmons comments on Under the Dome:

Re: King’s UNDER THE DOME, it’s probably unprofessional of me even to mention that I’m reading it (it was just a pure gift from Steve) and it would be totally unprofessional of me to mention any details, but I can say today as I near the end some 1400 pages of manuscript, with almost no fear of being disagreed with in November (except perhaps by a few NYTimes sparrowfart reviewers with a big chip on their shoulders), that King readers and fans—and readers new to Stephen King—WILL LOVE THIS BOOK.

What’s amazing to me is that UNDER THE DOME is the kind of huge, generous, sprawling, infinitely energetic novel that we (or at least I) associate with gifted young novelists in their 20’s—all energy and enthusiasm, the young author having not yet learned a long-distance novelist’s greedy trick of holding back characters or plot or techniques for future novels—and yet here with a master’s total control of the telling, myriad of characters, tone, and effects.

You have reason to be jealous, Sarah. It was a delight getting a gift sneak peek at this absolutely enjoyable and impressive novel.

http://forum.readerville.com/viewthread/104/P30/

I finished the 1400-page (in manuscript) behemoth late last night and most definitely was not disappointed. Few writers pull out all stops near the end of a novel the way King does. I suspect that everyone who’s ever enjoyed THE STAND will love UNDER THE DOME.

And that’s the last I’ll say about that book as long as grass grows and water flows.

New York --- Doesn't say if it's New York State somewhere or NYC.

Baltimore or D.C. (not yet determined which one) - Baltimore is in Maryland. DC is Washington, DC.

Atlanta - is in Georgia.

Sarasota - Is in Florida.

Minneapolis - Is in Minnesota.

Toronto - is Eastern Canada.

New England city (not yet determined which one) - Again, this could be anywhere, but Logan International is in Boston, Massachusetts and is the biggest NE airport.

Not sure if they are up and running late fall. I went 3 times as a teen, and 2 years ago we took the kids. If you like roller coasters and such, it is a pretty good place and much closer for me than Disney land. It's really fun if you have a teenage son who thinks he is tough and brave. Then you get to watch him nearly piss himself on some of the rides that he only rode to prove how brave he is. :wtf: I doubt I will go this time since it will just be me and the wife.

From Ms. Mod

Things could change but at this point, there is no book signing planned for the Times Talk event. What might be a possibility (but this is not set in stone yet) is that Steve will pre-sign a number of books (usually about 200-250) that would be sold at the event. Again, don't count on that yet, though.

Interesting that the event is on November 10, while the official publication date is (at least as far as I know) November 20.

My wife and I purchased 2 tickets to the event in NYC on Nov 10th. I know others did as well.

Do we have a threat going coordinate some kind of meeting for TDT members that are attending?

If not, let's start one! I think I just did.

From Ms. Mod.

I've heard back from Scribner regarding the TimesTalk appearance. There will be a total of 350 tickets available but they have already sold over 200 so if you're considering this event, you may want to act quickly. They are on a first come, first served basis but they feel that all seats have excellent sight lines and that the theater is small enough to give an intimate feel.

The ticket price is not including the purchase of a book and nothing has been set in stone yet about there being signed copies available at this event.

Shock: What is it exactly about Stephen King's material that keeps attracting you?

Darabont: Stephen King's writing. He's such a great storyteller. Oh, by the way, his next book just landed on my desk today. The xeroxed manuscript of this book he's been writing for the last year. It's called "Under the Dome." I'm like four chapters into it, it's awesome. It's really, really good. It's a thrill to get early looks at Steve's work like that. I always feel honored.

I'm hoping there are no authors among the 100 characters featured in UTD.

I'm envious of you East Coasters!

Perhaps this thread should be merged into the one with the pre-existing discussion on the same topic up in The Oracle forum (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=8274)? I think that would be the proper forum anyway.

I'm suprised no one has asked/discussed this yet: Will this book be connected to Dark Tower in any way?

jhanic

I don't think, at this point, there is any way of answering this. From the preliminary plot descriptions so far, it doesn't sound like it will be connected, but who knows?

if he is going to be doing signings in Minneapolis, I am going to try to make the drive up from KC. Either take a vacation day and head up, or grab the wife to go with me to get another book signed. I wish I knew when it was going to be and how to get tickets, etc. Never been to any book signing before...

Congratulations. I wish I could go.
There is a thread in The Oracle about the signing tour.
I am going to merge this into it.

Yes, I am going to the NYC show with my son. DC is a possibility as well (I did it once, why not again) and will await announcement of other East Coast venues.

I too am hoping to make the drive up to Minneapolis (from Milwaukee) if he is doing a signing. Just waiting for the information to come out so I can make my travel plans.

I dawdled and of course now the NYC event is sold out. If anyone might have an extra ticket, especially as the event nears, I would appreciate some good old fashioned sharing (with reimbursement, of course).

I know that at the one in Portsmouth they are offering pre-signed books for sale, so that might be a trend throughout the trip.

Thanks for the dates Bev. I'll be hitting up one of the New England ones. I checked the Portsmouth one, and there's a pre-sale for tickets starting July 25, but they don't go on sale to the public till aug 8th. How quickly do you guys think tickets will go? Will it be a problem getting them to that venue?

If you're worried about getting a ticket to that venue why not become a Music Hall member ($40 according to the website) sometime before the 25th? That way you can guarantee getting a ticket 2 weeks before they go on sale to the public. If you can afford it that seems like the best way to get a ticket before they sell out.

The Dan Brown event they had there in 2005 sold out immediately to the members, and there was never a public onsale, but that was the height of DaVinci Code hysteria...but other writers events take a long time to sell out, if they even do...it's a tough call whether King will instantly sell out, or take some time - but he'll absolutely sell out.

If you become a member and don't get tix to the event, you would probably be able to get a book voucher anyway.
