Can anyone beat 3.71 for regular unleaded (87 octane)?
And WA State sits on the effin pipeline!

It's about $3.53 here in Eastern PA.
It goes up about five cents a day, it seems.
One morning, on the way to work it was $3.33 and on the way home it was $3.51 - we're talking 9 hours later!

Yea Matt, but the stuff has to be shipped to you and that takes gas and in turn inflates prices. The damn pipe nearly comes through my back yard. Price gouging at its finest.

you're right Matthew, that was very interesting. especially this part...

"The average American pays 42 cents in taxes per gallon of gasoline that they purchase. 18.4 of those cents go directly to the federal government."

the amount we pay in taxes is already riddiculous. instead of these bogus "stimulus checks" we are getting, how about legitimate tax cuts for all Americans? the taxes on gas would be a good place to start.

Where in eastern PA? I'm in the same area.

Ours is 3.59 (last time I checked). I can usually save a few cents if I buy gas at home, which is about an hour south.

I think I just paid $3.49 today, and just last week I swear it was only around $3.19. It's jumping up so quickly nowadays it's ridiculous. I usually don't even pay attention to how much it is when I get it because I'll just get upset about how expensive it is.

I work at a gas station (in Oregon of all places, no self service sucks), and the gas at my work is $3.63 (with a three cent discount with your Safeway card, or a ten cent per gallon discount if you spend $50 or more on overpriced groceries) for regular unleaded, $3.71 for Plus, $3.81 for Premium, and something like $4.16 for Diesel. And trust me, few people have to listen to more bitching about gas prices than a gas station attendant.

£1.30 ($2.60) per litre yesterday. Yes litre, not gallon. So that would be $13 per UK gallon.

For Diesel yesterday I paid €1.27 a litre (Ireland). Using a currency converter on the net it makes it about $1.98 or about £1 sterling.

i am so thankful i'm in management now and don't have to do field work. the social workers are required to see every child in their caseload at least once a month. we have kids placed literally from one end of the state to the other--about 275 miles and 5 hours one way for some kids. right now mileage reimbursement is 50.5 cents per mile, i think. i don't see how the workers are affording to do this--especially the ones that drive SUV's.

Matt
04-26-2008, 07:15 AM
Is everyone hearing the price in places like Europe, Canada and Australia? They have been paying incredibly high prices for years and have found a way to cope.

I'm in that boat of people that don't drive anywhere for recreation. Work, store, work...repeat.

However, I think we have been very lucky with what we've been paying up to this point and as demand is driven higher (China) and people are willing to pay the prices that are set, there is no reason for them to come down.

We have an SUV but only because we had to take three kids with stuff places before. Now one is gone so we're going to sell it and get a smaller car. Not for any other reason except to try and find a way to curb the gas usage we already have to have (there are ways).

I try and figure out a car pool for my commute at some point because there is on end in sight on this gas thing unless we find an alternative source.

Bethany

i have the SUV because of the girls. we had a minivan for several years and it just wasn't big enough. i've been thinking about trading down for a car but it is sanity saving to have the option of having an entire row of seats between the girls sometimes. and you gotta love this, carpooling is forbidden for my job.

I live out in a rural area, and drive
most of a hour to/from work.
When I am off duty & home it
is about 4-5 miles to "town" and

Uh, why? And how do they prove that? What if you live together/right next door?

Tell them they're fuckheads.

Instead of going home again this semester, I'm making my parents come up to bring boxes and take home my bike. :P They're probably going to bring the Jeep which is a very stupid move, but my bike might not fit in the other cars. Heather19
04-27-2008, 07:30 AM
Same for me. I've got to drive just over an hour to work every day, and there's no one out my way with the same hours that I could carpool with. That's why I've stopped paying attention to the gas prices. I've got to fill up my tank every other day (minus weekends), so I don't even want to think about how much I'm paying.

Then they should make hybrids affordable. And they could, but god knows what the major oil companies have given the automobile companies to have them keep the prices so high for the hybrids. It pisses me off.

Hybrids here cost an average of $8000-10,000 higher than the regular gas guzzling vehicles.

My parents said the difference between a hybrid and a regular sedan is about the amount it will take to pay for my last year of college. Gee, wonder what they'll choose.

And I wondered about the batteries, too. I mean, you can't just get rid of those suckers. They're going to pile up. I want to go back to 1900 and get a car that you have to wind up with that stick thing in the front. :P

ZoNeSeeK
04-30-2008, 06:11 PM
It really has nothing to do with batteries, or interiors, or price at the moment. I'm failing to understand why its still considered some kind of lifestyle choice?

Gasoline/petrol is becoming more expensive as its not longer a stable fuel source. Its not going to get cheaper. Why insist on sticking with something thats unstable and becoming unaffordable? You have to remember, everywhere else doesn't have the luxury of $3.50 per gallon (which is about $1.00/L for me (last time they were that low was Feb 2005)). This isn't some guilt trip, its the reality of whats going on. Your oil fields in the Gulf and your massive stockpiles are insulating you from the full extent of the problem... in a way, this is excellent for you guys (especially given the state of the US and the world economy at the moment) - but new methods need to seriously be embraced. Who cares if the Prius is shit - there'll be improvements.

Daghain
04-30-2008, 07:30 PM
Well, that's my argument. Give me a realistic alternative that doesn't do major damage to the environment at a reasonable price, and I'm in. I just don't see it right now.

I would LOVE it if we had better mass transit - I would so love to take a bus or train to work (it would give me more time to read!) but the US has shit for public transportation, and there are very few places where it works well.

If gas went to $20 a gallon, I would be willing to bet we STILL would get no viable mass transportation.

ZoNeSeeK
04-30-2008, 09:54 PM
:( Yeah, good public transport is very important. And its fair enough with not wanting to buy a substandard and overpriced product - I just wish oil and car companies would inject money into alternate fuel cars instead of being threatened by the idea of them. Oil isn't infinite, its going to run out eventually.

Is it just major cities in the states that have decent public transport? I heard LA has a pretty good system ...

She-Oy
04-30-2008, 10:11 PM
I think NYC and surrounding areas probably have the best transit system, then Chicago perhaps....Atlanta trys and I've been on the Marta several times...I have no clue about LA, but for some reason I want to say it sucks there, but again, I can't speak from experience.

My father actually ran the small city transit system for Anniston, Alabama...and let me tell you it took over 15 years for the cities of Anniston and neighboring town Oxford (the town with the mall and all the shopping) to quit arguing and agree to work together on the transportation thing. I think most of the problem is pure politics. At least that's been my personal perspective of it.

Daghain

There are probably 5 cities, IMHO, that have good public transport.

Unfortunately, I live in the west. Ten years ago, in the two-horse town I lived in, it was considered normal to drive 20 minutes to the grocery store. :panic:

And for some stupid reason, everyone in Colorado thinks they need a 4WD SUV to get around here.

Um, no. It snows, yes. But, ten hours later it's GONE. We get a major 4-6 foot dump every 3-5 years, and that's it. Get over yourselves, people.

I turned in my CR-V for a Honda Fit. I get 30+++ miles to the gallon. I plan my stops along my work route, when I can (I used to be a delivery driver, so I got into this habit long before gas got to be a bazillion dollars a gallon) and I don't do a whole lot of unnecessary driving.

I'm at my minimum for gas use at the moment.

I can't bike to work, because I'm 15 miles away. (And, I'm lazy and not getting up at 5am!) I tried to buy a house in walking distance, then realized I'd still be driving more - I go to the next town ALL THE TIME. I only come to the town my work is in to work. Hmm...

So, I laugh when I see people filling up their Toyota Mastadon or whatever. Because I can go two weeks on a tank of gas.

ZoNeSeeK
05-01-2008, 12:02 AM
Are you serious? Is it called a Mastadon? Our car costs about $85 to fill up (4 years ago, with a slightly smaller car and cheaper fuel prices it was $38 to fill up), and that will get us through the fortnight if we dont do any extra major driving. But this friday we're going down to Mandurah (which is about an hour away) to see some friends so there goes 1/4 of a tank for the round journey, which is $21. We're paying $21 to see some friends. Fuck that.

Gas here (half hour south of Washington DC) is currently $3.51/gal.

Me and my wife switched vehicles to save on gas. She drives 12 miles round trip and I drive 60 miles round trip daily. She drives my big ass truck to work and I take her Impala. It currently costs us about $300/month just for gas for commuting expenses - before we switched it would ahve been $400/month!

When I see prices in Europe I think I guess we don't ahve it so bad!

I can now work form home a couple days a week. Using hte same calculations that saves me about $30 per week!

By the way if my truck were completely empty it would cost me about $112 to fill it up! Yikes! i really need that tax incentive check! My daughter got hers yesterday!

I ballparked my Fit at 30 MPG, but I think I'm really closer to 40.

Hybrids, mainly Prius, are supposed to be around 50. I have a friend who has one and she swears she gets 45-50 in it. But in the mountains, it can't go for shit.

As long as you are never in a hurry (she isn't - she's very type B) then you're fine.

gas just went up to 3.84 for the cheap stuff at the station down the street. the diesel is up to 4.65 there and that just makes me cringe just to see that number.

I WANT MY CAR BACK!!!!!!

Gas is $3.89 right now, I'm sure it will go up in time for the Monday morning commute. GRRR.

This rental car is not as good on gas as my Fit. My Fit, however, is in several large pieces at the body shop, and I'm not likely to see it for at least another week. :panic:

Gas is $3.89

God I loved the day when I had to pay $3.89. Of course I didnt realize that I love it so much until I started paying $4.30 for cheap (87 octane) gas.

Friday it was $3.85, and this morning when I stopped it was $3.93.

I also heard from a couple people that gas was going to get up around $6 by July 4th. I sure hope that's not the case.

I wish I could bike to work, 15 miles isn't so bad, but I'd have to ride on a state highway part of the way, and I'm quite sure I'd get killed. That road is bad enough for drivers.

So I guess I'll pay for the gas.

well, the miniturtle takes premium unleaded so i'm coughing up $4.39/gallon (ouch). luckily i get 32 mpg city driving so i only fill up like every week & a half or two weeks. plus, when i make a trip later this month it'll be highway driving and i'll get like 40 or so mpg (i made it to detroit and back on one tank of gas, with two days city driving left over once) but still. my tiny little car and it costs me $50 to fill the tank.

my husband drives a mustang gt so that really sucks. :(

Welcome, trixiedust! Post in the welcome thread and tell us about yourself!

The other side effect of this gas thing is airfare is going through the roof. I'm sharking around the local airline pricing the flights to Vegas this fall, and I'm torn between taking what I can get now, or hoping it goes down later.

This is more complicated than the stock market. :D

Ya the problem is that they don't think the prices are going flux like they have been. YOu can almost bet they are going to go up. But don't quote me on that.

Here in Ireland, unleaded petrol is about EURO €1.23 per litre. At 4.5461 litres/gallon thats EURO €5.63 per Gallon. And at an exchange rate of USD $1.56 to the EURO, thats about USD $8.81 per gallon...... and rising.

Had to dig out my last post here for the calculation.

It's now EURO€1.33 per litre.
Thats EURO€6.05 per gallon.
Or about USD$9.51 per gallon (at 1.5718 exchange rate).

I was going to ask for our European community members to post the Euro per Liter prices. The equivalent of 9.50 per gallon, ouch. Of course Smart Cars are a lot more prevalent in Europe. Americans have to get over the illusion that cars should be fashionable and then maybe we can start adopting them here.
