Im about halfway through the second graphic novel installment of Y. Generally Im not one for post apocoliptic plagues wiping out mankind (literally as only women are left to run the planet) but Brian K. Vaughan is such an extremely smooth writer. His fictional characters are personable people that you can feel a conection with, which I have not run across in too many other [comic] writers. If your up for a good read I suggest checking it out...
Anyone else dig this title?

This was actually next on my graphic-novel line up (I'm currently 4 volumes into Fables), I've heard great things about it. Isn't there going there going to be a movie based on it?

I'm going to be reading it once I'm through with Sandman. Jimmy's a big fan of Y, so I figure it's gonna be good.

The Dark Tower comics got me into graphic novels. After I finished the first issue, I realized that I had been missing out on a lot of great reading.

I asked my local comic book owner to recommend something to me. After telling him that I wasn't into the superhero stuff, he handed me a copy of Y: The Last Man.

He mad me a very happy man...one with a lighter wallet, but happy nonetheless.

And yes Feev, a movie is in the works.

What? Did someone say post-apocalyptic? *comes running*

I love anything end-of-the-world. It's my guilty pleasure. Whether it's zombies, comets, pollution or plague, i'm there dude.

I haven't heard of this, but it just jumped way up on my list of things to read. Thanks for letting us know about it.

I also have a fetish for post-apocalyptic subjects.

When I found out Y was a post-apocalyptic story, I was hooked.

I thought living in a world where I was the only dude around would be heaven. For Yorrick Brown...not so much.

I just got Volume Five.

Arthur Heath

In volume 3 I love the props Vaughn gives Garth Ennis and Preacher by giving Yorick a Fuck Communism lighter, saying he engraved it after reading a graphic novel.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the story line and is therefore not a spoiler.

I hope you like it. It has something that comics are really lacking today : Strong female characterization.

Yorick and Ampersand are pretty great too.

Vaughn's really great at the female characters though. His "Runaways" comic is set in the regular Marvel U, and the girls outnumber the boys in the team. You don't really see that all too often.

Yes there is. BADASS.

Few comics rile me like WD does. The last two issues have jarred me. Simply outstanding.

I'd rank the apocalyptic comics thus:

1.) The Walking Dead
2.) Y: the last man

The Walking Dead is the only comic to ever chill me to the bone.

I never saw a resemblance, actually. Both characters carry themselves and speak differently enough that, although physically similar they're not all that the same.

Yes! I'm a huge Walking Dead fan. I'm a few issues behind right now, but wow. That is some crazy, awesome stuff.

Back in junior high, I used to dream about a world where I was the only male around and my last name is Brown. It is a sign! Of what, I do not know. JK, but this comic does sound very interesting.

fernandito
06-24-2008, 11:58 AM
How much do they go for on Amazon?

Arthur Heath
06-24-2008, 12:30 PM
Used they range 5-6 bucks, plus another 3 or so for shipping. I have never had a problem purchasing used graphic novels. The sellers do a nice job listing the condition of the books and have always been spot on. So your saving about half the money for having to wait a week or so waiting. It adds up pretty fast for longer series such as Y.

Good so far, I just got passed the part where-

It's revealed that Yorick's mother is the one that actually sent the Israelis to track down Yorick.

I'm confused though, weren't they already looking for him even before Yorick met up with his mom? And why Yorick's mommy let him leave with 355 in the first place, didn't she know then and there that she was an agent? :panic:

I need to skim through the previous 2 volumes, it seems.

Arthur Heath

I wonder how many volumes it is...I just googled Y: The Last Man and there is a pretty comprehensive Wiki about the series. I didnt want to get too far into it as I am only on Vol. 6 (appropriately named Girl on Girl) but it looks like there is 10 total volumes. I'm going to pick up the remaining four volumes at San Diego Comic Con. You can pick up 20% off graphic novels pretty easily.

I'm following you :ninja:

Well, as I stated in the GC thread - I just completed vol 6 yesterday. I loved the scene at the end where-

Beth is dreaming that she's a superhero and she saves Yorick from Giant Ampersand

I finished Vol 2 a little while ago.

Lets see....the scene when Hero finally discovers that Yorick is the last man alive was pretty messed up. I really thought maybe she'd come to her senses and leave the 'butch lady club'. BUT! Seeing that Victoria bitch take an axe to the head was nice. :excited:
And I'm really curious to see what happens when the mean return from space. :orely:

I (believe) its vol. 6 where one of my favorite parts of the series is where:

Agent 355 drops off Yorick at a retired Culper agents house and she seduces him, spiraling him down a dark path of torture and S&M only to find out that she was doing so for his behalf, causing him to have an epiphany, thereby bringing his suicidal tendencies to a halt.

Love that stuff.

Volumes 8 and 9 where the slowest for me. Good, but not great. I tore through volume 10 in an hour. In my opinion you couldnt have asked for a better ending. It was one of the greatest endings in (long volumes) of graphic novel history, right behind Preacher.
