View Full Version : Helpful Features

Hey everybody. Happy Monday.

This is our last week as a "test site" and I was hoping that you guys could start posting helpful features for our new members.

Then we can copy them all down and post them in this first thread.

I'll start:

There is a "new posts" options in the tool bar to see only threads that have been posted in since you left.

The Quick Links pull down menu gets you a lot of places in just one click.

To respond to more than one post at one time:
1) Click the "multi" button by each post that you want to quote so that it says "multi-on."
2) Then near the bottom of the screen hit "New Reply" (not Quick Reply).
Voila'.

There is an Edit button at the bottom of each of your posts. Most often, editing your post rather than amending it in a new one is better from the point of view of readability.

also, not only does new posts show you where the site has been active since you left, but you can see all of the threads that have posts that you haven't read...ever.

You can also hit "Home" on your keyboard and it will take you to the top of the page.
And "End" conversely :D

Using IE the F11 key makes the top of the browser disappear. Press it again to have it return.

on that note, f5 refreshes.

On that note, so does a nice cold beer.

If you want to insert a link. You can just type the word you want...

yahoo

then highlight it and click the "insert link" button.

google (http://www.google.com)
That's how it looks. You can also just do URL tags as follows:
[URL="http:// information here]
then you put the title of the link created, like "Google."
[/U RL]
Remove the space between the U and the RL in the closed tag, of course.

There is an option in the upper right corner that says "view unread posts". It subdivides into threads you have responded to also others that you have simply viewed.

You can also subscribe to threads you want to follow using the User CP.

I'm not sure but try the apple key in combination with your up/down arrow keys.

At the risk getting laughed at also. I didn't know the home and end keys did that either.

Jean

don't worry Brice, the laughers would be outnumbered by us, the laughed-at. I didn't know it either, and found the constant scrolling great nuisance. But the decades of communism taught me asceticism, so I didn't complain.

Hannah

Yeah, I didn't know either.

really? you guys didn't know that?

mrs. (oh, what the hell was her name? she taught me german and typing. fuck!) anyway, mrs. something taught me that in typing my freshman year.

We didn't have any computers when I was in school

we didn't have any computers when I was in the University... I'm ancient.

Brice

Until about two years ago I hadn't touched a computer for longer than a few minutes.

Jean
05-21-2007, 09:59 AM
I got my first in 1993. It was a 286... black-and-white monitor, no mouse... and MS-DOS instead of any Windows... but it was Such a Miracle! I even played games. Like Larry 1. It took him minutes to get to the next screen.

So, I never blame technical progress! I find it sweet, just like all those Helpful Features we're discussing.

And, back to Helpful Features - is there any way to save an unsent message? I haven't found it yet; but, again, it may be only my lack of attention

Brice
05-21-2007, 10:01 AM
If so I couldn't find a way to do that either Jean.

Matt

When did you get your first computer and/or experience.

We had a really old computer. I think the brand name was Wang. I used to play Oregon Trial on it all the time when I was 7 or so.

Also, I played another game I can't remember the name of. In the game, you were an elf like creature who ran around on a huge tree and killed little creatures to find gold coins. It was so much fun.

Matt
05-21-2007, 02:23 PM
I did not have a computer in my house until after I was an adult.

We had an Atari but other than that--play with rocks in the driveway.

I had a Timex Sinclair something or another and thought I was the living shit.

I knew about the Home and End keys in terms of Word documents and such. It never occurred to me to try them on a messageboard.

We had one o' them Pong games. Back-and-white, burn an image in your tv screen if you left it on too long - that one.

No real computer until after college (a.k.a. "university" to you foreigners). :)

I have reprogrammed my keys so that F5 prompts my wife to bring me a fresh beer.

Note:
If you right click on your grey menu bar and desect status bar, pressing F11 removes both top and bottom grey bars and leaves only the side scroll bars. Nice full picture.
Please say duh if you already knew this.

I found out something interesting today, this may have already been brought up.

If you want to insert a link. You can just type the word you want...

yahoo

then highlight it and click the "insert link" button.

its asks you for the address and inserts it behind the word so it doesn't look like...www.yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com)

Please also post here if theres a button or option on the site you don't understand :)

For instance - to quote multiple posts in a thread, hit the "multi off" button (which is next to the "quote" button at the bottom of a post). Hitting it changes it to "multi on", click this for as many posts as you wish, pressing the "quote" button for the last post you want to use. All the relevant posts then appear for you to edit/quote as you need.

There is an option in the upper right corner that says "view unread posts". It subdivides into threads you have responded to also others that you have simply viewed.

Any chance to get some more storage space for the Private Messages?
I understand that it means more storage on the serveur etc, so maybe there could be an option to BUY some more storage space or something?

I dont know. An option such as doubling the current allowance (which is 150 messsages) for something like $5 may be something that could be considered?
$5 is cheap, therefore affordable for users, and i guess that it would definitely cover the extra cost.
