On the occasion of Ric Flair's Hall of Fame induction and his last match ever, which will take place tonight at Wrestlmania 24, I figured it's time we had a thread for the King of Sports, pro wrestling.

Of course, you can't have pro wrestling without shameless plugs, so watch my promo!!

I like how you've got that melodramatic, yet compelling, manager's voice perfected.

Shades of Bobby Henan.

Wow, was wrestlemania 24 a SWEET event. It was definitely one of the best manias ever, rivalled X7

Yeah, i'm a hardcore wrestling fan. Well, not hardcore in an insane way but I love and and probably always will. It's like Chocolate ice cream.

I was a fervant fan of professional from around the time of Wrestlemania II or II up until I was eleven or twelve. I guess my infatuation with it dissipated after I saw a local WWF exhibition at a Knights of Columbus hall, from the mezzanine, and realized that the punches didn't really land on any of the wrestler's jaws. I stopped watching sometime during The Undertaker's first reign as WWF World Champion. I got back into it briefly when The Rock and HHH were vying to be the best in the WWF-I watched Smackdown for about a year or so-then stopped. I still love the concept behind the ECW though. I used to enjoy watching that late at night.

VERY sweet, and the 59 year old man and the 45 year old man having the best match of the night made it sweeter. The ending there was just perfect. I lost it, and so did my friend watching it with me, and everyone else I know of who saw it. As soon as Shawn said "I love you.", damn, that was it for me, bring out the tissues.

Whoever booked that match is a damn genius, I say. ***** as far as I'm concerned. What a way to go.

For those of you that may be interested, there will be a retirement ceremony for Ric Flair tonight on RAW, 9PM EST on the USA network. Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, J.J. Dillon, and Barry Windham are all confirmed to be backstage, so it looks like there will be a reunion of the best 4 Horsemen group there was. There may be some surprise guests as well. Sounds like an amazing night.

A guy on facebook is quite adamant that it was a garbage match, regardless of the story, because Flair couldn't wrestle. He even agrees it's due to his age. I don't get why he's sad as he knew a 60 yr old guy was wrestling.

I'm watching the replay of RAW in an hour as I always do.

I won't spoil it for you, but some of those other surprises I thought might happen did happen.

Also, there's an obscure reference to watches. The deal with that is that Shawn gave Ric a custom Rolex to commemorate his retirement, and Shawn bought himself a matching watch.

What an emotional three days for Flair. I have to admit I was teary eyed during his HOF speech and tonight.

Spencer
04-01-2008, 06:54 PM
That HOF speech was WAY better than what they showed. They edited it down by more than an hour.

Here we go. Recap of the ENTIRE speech:

Mike Johnson, reporting live from the Hall Of Fame:

Triple H was introduced. He said that the fact the building is jampacked tonight to show love for the past of the business is awesome and thanked the fans.

Triple H said, "How do you talk about this guy?" He said Flair deserves not to be in the Hall of Fame but to have his own wing.

They played a video feature on Flair's career.

HHH pointed out Michael Hayes and said he looked like a Stay Puft Marshmallow Pimp.

HHH said Flair inspired him to get in the business watching him on Saturdays on TBS. He told a story of going to a gym convention in Columbus, Georgia and meeting Flair in a hotel where Flair was walking around naked except for a pair of dress shoes and socks and a balloon tied to his penis. HHH saw Flair strut into the bar and thought that everything he heard about that man is true. He said all the crazy Flair stories were true.

HHH said Flair was his idol and is one of his closest friends but he was terrified by the prospect of inducting the greatest pro wrestler in history. He said that Flair inspired every single wrestler in the company in some way. HHH said that when he saw Steve Austin this weekend, Austin said he didn't want to miss Flair being inducted.

HHH asked what made Flair the best and said he was one of the greatest stick man in the history of the business. He said that he had the greatest phrases ever in the history of the wrestling.

HHH said Flair could go 60 minutes with a broomstick and get the broom over. He pointed out Flair's classic matches with Bruiser Brody, Sting, Harley Race and Dusty Rhodes among others.

He said all those things helped Flair but it was his passion to be the best wrestler that was the key. HHH noted that it's been said that Flair is "arguably" the best wrestler of all time. HHH said he is still waiting to hear the argument against because he's the greatest of all time, period.

HHH introduced Flair, who got the longest standing ovation I have ever seen. Flair pulled out a photo of himself and Gordon Solie and said to Shawn Michaels that's who he had to fight. Flair said he would never retire and let out a whoo.

He said in a moment like this, he realizes that for all he's done, he must have done something right. He was crying a lot.

Flair said he's worried about not remembering enough people to thank. He started by thanking Kevin Dunn and the WWE production team for what they do every week and making him look good the last seven years.

Flair said he wanted to thank the legal department because some of the things he used to pull don't fly anymore. He thanked a lot of WWE officials including Sue Aitchensen and Mark Carano.

Flair said he loves to talk to the young guys and praised all the WWE agents for working their ass off every week. He thanked Mike Rotunda, Barry Windham, Finlay, Jamie Noble, Pat Patterson, Sgt Slaughter, Jerry Brisco, Arn Anderson and Rick Steamboat.

Flair then thanked the writing team, saying that although they sometimes argue about what they are asked to do, they are creative and talented. He named many of them by name and apologized to Ed Koskey for all the times he scared him by saying things he wasn't supposed to be.

Flair thanked those who made his robes over the years and his boots. Flair said he figured out today he bought 582 pairs of boots over the years.

Flair began crying as he thanked his attorney John Taylor. He said he was in a lawsuit with WCW and Taylor advised him he could sit back and get rich or go back to work.

Flair thanked Steve Lombardi for all his hard work in putting together the interviews we see all the time and Downtown Bruno for bringing him a 12-pack every night.

Flair joked that his family thought Chris Jericho was Bon Jovi. Flair talked about Big Show, saying he knew Andre the Giant when he was first breaking in. Flair said Big Show was the best big man he's ever been in the ring with. Show began openly sobbing.

Flair praised Tony Garea and Tim White for all the draws they give him on the road.

Flair began praising Edge and said he's a special guy and a great champ. He told the story of working a ladder match with him saying he did something with Edge he never did before and loved it.

Flair said now the speech would begin!!

He showed off NWA title cufflinks HHH gave Flair.

Flair began breaking down thanking Betty Skaaland and the late Arnold Skaaland for all their kindness. Flair told a story of going out drinking all night and running up a bartab of $30K during Summerslam 1992 weekend and Skaaland saving his rear end.

Flair said Ray Stevens once told him the day the goose bumps go away, his career should end and Flair said he has goose bumps tonight. He said tonight was the end of a journey he's lived for so many years.

Flair put over the other members of this year's Hall of Fame class. He said it was special to receive the honor while still active. He said that he wants all of the talents to know how much he respects all of them and thanks them for their friendship and respect. He said the last 7 years have been special to him and he's honored to be inducted in Orlando, "the second home of Space Mountain".

Flair talked about working in Florida as a territory and doing interviews with Gordon Solie. Flair said he owes everything he had, has, and will be to the wrestling business. He said he hopes that fans realize that Flair gave everyone the best he could.

Flair thanked those who helped him who are no longer with them.

Ric Flair talked about being laid up after his plane crash and George Scott suggesting he be modeled after Buddy Rogers. He thanked Scott for seeing something in him.

Flair began talking about the toughness of Blackjack Mulligan and living next to him. Flair told a story of Blackjack and Barry Windham against The Andersons and BJ not liking how it was going. He sent Windham to the locker room, hit Ole and Gene, then told them if they wanted a piece of him, he'll be waiting in their locker room. He said the Andersons still haven't entered. He praised Blackjack's ability to show how special he is and told the young talents that is what they need to do... show how special they are.

Flair discussed winning the NWA title from Harley Race.

This is seriously beyond awesome. If you ever loved Ric Flair, the NWA or WCW, you need to see this speech.

Flair talked for a long time about his friendship with Ken Patera and said Ken introduced Flair to Verne Gagne.

Gagne warned Flair there was no quitting if he started training. He said the second day, he wanted to quit and talked a long time about training in Gagne's barn. He quit and went home. Gagne came to Flair's house and threw him down and told him to come back. A week later Flair quit again and Gagne called and warned him to come back or he was coming over. Flair returned and 2 months later he was in the business.

Flair began telling Wahoo McDaniel stories I couldn't do justice too. He praised Wahoo for teaching him and showing him how to be the best.

Flair said Dusty Rhodes became one of his idols and wanted to be just like him. He told stories about wanting to be Rambling Ricky Rhodes when he was breaking in and said Dusty's connection to the fans was as awesome as anything Flair has ever seen. He talked about Dusty seeing something in him and naming the first Starrcade 'A Flair for the Gold'. He said Dusty is the most charismatic person in the business.

Flair said his greatest opponent was Rick Steamboat, saying that was "as good as it got" and he's fortunate to have had Steamboat to work with to create a body of work that will stand the test of time.

Flair talked about working in St. Louis under Sam Muschnick, saying it was the crown jewel of the NWA and praised Sam for his integrity and honesty. He said wrestling there was as big an honor as it was to wrestle in Madison Square Garden and anywhere in the Carolinas.

Flair praised the Crockett family for pushing him to be NWA champ. He said he wishes them nothing but the best.

Flair pointed out Carlos Colon in the crowd and talked about how Carlos and Vince McMahon Sr. were the deciding votes to make him NWA champ. Flair told a story about sending in a heel promo about hating Trinidad that got him arrested when he arrived. Flair told the story about the riot in the Dominican Republic and that Carlos paid off the airline for Flair to travel without a passport.

Flair said no one will understand how good the Four Horsemen were inside and outside the ring. He praised Arn, Malenko, Mongo and Benoit (by name) and said they were the reason he came back to WCW. Benoit's name got some boos but mostly cheers.

Flair began crying as he praised Arn Anderson as a friend and as a performer. He told some great stories about partying with Arn and told him he loved him.

Flair praised Tommy Young and Charles Robinson for their great referee work. Nora Greenwald was sitting with Robinson.

Flair praised Gordon Solie and Jim Ross provided the soundtrack of his career. Flair said no one could ever replace Jim Ross and that he knew the business inside and out.

Flair said Bobby Heenan was the greatest manager and one of the greatest workers of all time. He told some stories of Heenan managing the Blackjacks when a riot broke out. He said Heenan is not in good health right now but he wants everyone to know he's one of the best friends Flair ever had.

Flair then told some stories about Gene Okerlund and said he wouldn't have made it through WCW without going drinking with him after the shows. He said Okerlund is wrestling and is awesome.

Flair talked about his confidence issues and thanked Michael Hayes for being a close friend and for never letting Flair forget who he was. He told a tory about seeing Hayes with Cher and Greg Allman.

They just gave Flair a "go home" sign, which the crowd booed.

Flair said he knows his last match could be tomorrow and it could be in front of his family at ringside and told Shawn "to be the man you have to beat the man". He thanked everyone for their love.

Flair praised Undertaker for being so great in the ring and that he loved their match at Wrestlemania 18.

Flair thanked the McMahons and said Vince has treated him with nothing but respect while Linda is one of the smartest women he's ever known. Flair said when the time comes, WWE will be in equally good hands with Stephanie and Shane.

Flair praised John Cena's love and passion. He said he's tireless and is the "go to guy" in the company. Flair said his heart is in the business and he won't leave the business for Hollywood. Flair said he corrupted Cena and told stories about making him drink.

Flair said he was tired of hearing Hulk Hogan was the greatest of all time in the WWF and WWE when it was really Steve Austin. He said Austin was the best.

Another "go home" sign. More boos.

Flair praised Batista and Randy Orton. Flair said he lives his life vicariously thru Batista now.

They are rushing Flair since the Hall is on the air now.

Flair praised HHH and said he wishes he could wrestle him back when Flair was good. Flair then talked about Shawn Michaels saying he was way ahead of Flair a long time ago but tomorrow, Shawn has "The Man" to contend with.

Flair said he's so thankful to have a wonderful family. He said his father was the bravest man he ever knew and his mom is amazing. He said his wife is his best friend and inspires him every day. Flair told his kids he loved them and thanked his first two wives for all their hard work as mothers. His children were all crying.

The Wrestlemania DVD will be a "must buy" for anyone, simply due to Flair's induction speech. It was almost like a shoot interview at points, with Flair discussing his incredible career.

The fans were very upset at the constant calls for Flair to wrap up, and at one point turned their wrath towards Triple H, who helplessly responded with a "It's not my call" expression.

Handling a moment with Flair
Apr 04, 2008 - 04:05:01 CDT

Maybe you've all known me to crack a joke or two about strange situations causing me to break into bawling hysterics, but for the most part, Iswear they're all just jokes. Icouldn't possibly tear up that much. I'd be dehydrated all the time.

Conversely, my comedically corrupt mind could not have conceived a situation such as this past Monday, as Isat crying considerably on my couch, while watching professional wrestling.

Men in white coats, I've waited so long for you.

A great number of Americans treat pro wrestling with disdain because it presents itself as if it were a real sporting event, but we all know that the matches are staged, and no one likes being lied to. Especially not by men with surnames of "the Samoan Bulldozer."

The men and women in the ring are just doing what writers tell them to. But you really can't fake falling through tables or crashing onto the mat from the top rope. Their actions are probably more real than those of actors.

Ilike to call it theater, as written by Larry the Cable Guy.

One of the unexpected results of this sort-of reality is that the human beings behind these characters will sometimes shine through, delivering legitimately emotional moments.

Had you not heard (and, being more respectable than the likes of me, I'm sure you hadn't), Wrestlemania was Sunday, and longtime wrestler Ric Flair lost a match that had the stipulation that he must retire if he didn't win. The whole weekend had been stocked with Flair tributes, including his inductment into the WWE Hall of Fame, and being the perceptive detective Iam, Isort of had a hunch that he just might lose that match.

Flair is, among wrestling fans, a legend. While Hulk Hogan was the household name of pro wrestling in the '80s, Flair was the world champion in the National Wrestling Alliance and World Championship Wrestling. He was over-the-top outside of the ring and in interviews, and a dedicated athlete and showman in the ring. He was and will remain the greatest to ever walk that aisle.

So, on Monday's "Raw," Flair came out to give his farewell address to the audience. After he had thanked the audience for supporting him throughout his 36-year career, the company surprised him by bringing current and former wrestlers to the ring, along with his family, and the entire roster surrounded the ring, applauding him. Along with that, the audience stood in unison, chanting, "Thank you, Flair,"while Flair broke down in tears.

It was not at the level of a "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day," but it was still as touching as any retirement ceremony I'd ever seen. It was a man at the twilight of his career, sad that this time in his life was over but grateful for the time he had. It's a milestone we all come to eventually, so we can reflect on how we will react when we, too, get there.

That feeling was, to me, as real as it gets. Thank you, Ric Flair.

Gotta love Paul E. He sure does call it like he sees it.

Paul to Ric: Stop Crying Already

By PAUL HEYMAN

Published: Today

A few disclaimers up front.

1) I'm a huge fan of ‘emotional’ moments on wrestling shows, especially ones based on merit and service more than tragedy.

2) I think Ric Flair deserves every accolade, every clap of the hands, every tribute paid to him at the Hall of Fame, at WrestleMania, and at Monday Night Raw for his retirement ceremony.

3) I cried my eyes my out watching Flair apologize to his children, and in some ways even more so by being such a man as to thank his first two wives at the Hall of Fame.

But jeeeesh, I wish Ric Flair would stop crying already.

The Hall of Fame speech, while edited for television, was a heart-wrenching genuine display of emotion that allowed Richard Fliehr a chance to thank everyone for letting him be - WHOOOOOO! - The Nature Boy Ric Flair all of those years, day and night.

That was an awesome television special. Flair was magnificent. He was gracious, eloquent, charming, choked with a passionate love for the family who sacrificed their time with him so he could be "that other person" that truly dwells inside him.

He was a man filled with pride yet regret; honour yet guilt; deep sorrow, but unparalleled accomplishment.

Then came WrestleMania.

In 10 years, this Mania will be remembered for two things.

In second place comes the fantastic Big Show v Floyd Mayweather match, which not only lived up to it's hype but far surpassed it.

By the way, Mayweather is a total pro for the match he participated in and showed what a phenomenal performer he truly is. Paul Wight is a giant without peer, a larger than ‘larger than life’ performer who stepped up like Bam Bam Bigelow did against Lawrence Taylor - like Ric Flair carried so many people who never truly understood the seemingly-effortless but totally brilliant job Flair was doing in making them look great.

And in first place, Ric Flair v Shawn Michaels.

That finish was an all time classic. The proud but wounded warrior struggles to his feet and asks for the execution to be given to him with dignity. He wants no mercy. It's not the way of the legends.

As the tears roll down the travel-beaten face of the pride-filled master in the final moments of his reign, the kid who idolized him fights his own conscience and gives the decorated chieftain the right to go out in style.

Shawn Michaels mouths "I'm sorry." He struggles, but continues, "I love you." The WWE audience, wrapped up in the passion of the Flair Fever that had engulfed WrestleMania weekend, never once rolled their eyes at the scene, nor should they have.

Flair's performance had little to do with the physicality of the match and everything to do with delivering 20 minutes of emotion-tugging psychology that had everyone hoping his career would survive another day, even though you knew in your heart the outcome.

And Shawn Michaels? This match itself was a Hall of Fame worthy performance. If WWE opens up a Smithsonian-like museum, the tape of that finish should play over and over and over again. Yup, that good.

Then came Monday.

And yes, I know this is going to piss off some of my friends, but if I never see Ric Flair cry again, it'll be too soon.

It would have been great to see Flair go out as the Kiss Stealing, Wheeling Dealing, Limousine Riding, Jet Flying, Sonofagun.

OK, so we're going for yet another emotional moment. We had 'em crying at the Hall of Fame. Had 'em at Mania. OK, one more to go. Let's give it to 'em on Raw.

And after the first set of reunions for Flair, don't you think it was time for the mass curtain call, the standing ovation, the "thank you Ric" chants and goodnight everybody?

It was a treat for everyone to see Ric reunited with Tully and Arn and Windham and JJ.

Anyone who knows the story of how JJ left WWE, and the enormous heat between JJ and Vince will tell you, this was Vince McMahon doing what he felt was right for business.

Hey, there's Ricky Steamboat. That's a nice tribute. Their worst matches against each should be considered all time classics. Those two were magic together. Michaels' appearance and hug makes it complete. That's some great emotion.

But watching Flair cry because Chris Jericho says thank you? Hey, here's John Cena. And he's saluting Flair. Whooop de freakin' do. Yeah yeah, this is basic Thugonomics. What the hell does it have to do with anyone's favorite Flair memories? Cena? Jericho? Where's Fifi the French Maid?

Hell, if we're stretching, bring out the mannequin that doubled as Precious (anyone under 36 or 37 will have to take my word for it).

Raise the 4 Fingers with the Horsemen. Drop the elbow on your own jacket. Whooo a bunch of times. And please, I'm begging someone to tell Vince and Kevin Dunn that f'n song about leaving the memories alone is not something that tugs at the heart, nor does it add to the emotion of a Ric Flair testimonial.

Play Strauss' Sprach Zarathustra - which was the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey - all night long.

That other song is just Vince and Kevin saying: "Here's the WWE touch to it all that makes it so great."

Get over yourselves.

Sorry, I digress.

Triple H belts out something like: "Here's another Horsemen, Dean Malenko!" Cut to Flair, he's bawlin'. Over Dean Malenko?

I'd rather see Tommy Young. Or Tony Schiavone. Or even David Crockett.

Please, someone send down Vince to hit the ring, throw everyone out, demand Flair acknowledge Vince as Lord and Master, and say: "NOW you're joining the club!"

Something... anything...

And maybe this is where Flair puts Vince in the Figure Four, and Vince is tapping like a wildman, especially since Vince didn't tap out a few weeks ago on television.

Nope, Vince just got put through a table and pinned.

And since the WWE champion himself, Randy Orton tapped out to the Figure Four, as did MVP and Kennedy - all men who must be considered big parts of WWE's future - I'm sure Vince will tap and put Flair ov...

More guests of honor. More tears.

Enough already.

By night three of WrestleMania weekend, I just wanted to say "goodbye" to ‘The Cause of All This,’ not see the aged hero's third night of tears and uncontrollable sobbing.

As an audience member, I was privileged enough already to see the human being behind the public image at the Hall of Fame.

As an audience member, I had the pleasure of seeing the performer work his ass off at WrestleMania and give a performance that as fans of his character, we can all be proud of.

Ric Flair's departure was memorable, so therefore my blog this week should not be considered a criticism but simply a personal observation.

There's nothing wrong with how it was handled. And I'm sure Flair wouldn't change a thing about it. That's his right. It was a tribute to his sacrifice, his career, his lifetime dedication to being The Man.

Just next time, I'd like to see the bug-eyed, half-crazed, surely out-of-his-mind Ric Flair.

The custom-made from head-to-toe personification of the phrase "charismatic character" who just can't help but be the centre of attention.

That's the Ric Flair I want to see. I want to celebrate his career, not mourn it. I just don't want any more boo-hoos.

I'm in the mood for a WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I agree with things Heyman said about the send off. I don't think Jericho and Cena should have been out but Orton definitely should have been. Evolution (trips especiall) was a huge part in Flair doing what he's done since his return.

I also can't stand Cena, but I do appreciate that he has some level of honesty about the whole thing, like when he told Regal last week "I know what it's like to put your body on the line for these people, and have them still tell you that you suck."

Keep your eyes peeled. My friend and junior prom date Adam Hayes is going to to be trying out for the WWE... there may be a future for our Purple Hayes...

Is he going to the Florida territory, or is he trying out where you live?

Got the Wrestlemania 24 DVD today, just awesome. The entire Hall of Fame is included, and Flair's speech was only editied in 2 places when comparing it with the transcript I read. First was when he mentioned Chris Benoit's name when listing the Horsemen (which I kinda thought would happen), and the signals from HHH for Flair to wrap up were gone also, otherwise it was intact. Almost 90 minutes long, and, as the editor of Pro Wrestling Torch said, "That was the best anything ever in this business."

I wish they'd put Flair on it, but very cool nonetheless. The Michaels and Orton autos in particular are very hard to come by.

My babygirl would melt just looking at the RKO signature, alone.

Batista had the line of the night last night:

"I'm NOT sorry, and I DON'T love you."

Had a great wrestling weekend, here's the pics:

Me with my favorite manager, one of the greatest of all time, Jim Cornette:

I got to take him and his wife around Colonial Williamsburg too, that was my most fun day ever there.

OK, every male wrestling fan 25 or older can be insanely jealous now. :

They're pushing CM Punk WAY too fast. I like him, but not sure he's ready to carry RAW just yet.

WWE hasn't been very good as of late. I find myself not caring about anything happening atm.
