TheDarkTower.com Haven Foundation Fundraiser Giveaway

Putting together our Haven Foundation Charity Fund Raiser 2008 has been a very warm experience for me. From the people who have donated time/money, items and collectibles to the cause, to each and every person who has told me what a wonderful thing it is. I deeply believe in this and I also think each of us owe some debt of gratitude to the freelance artists that this fund raiser will support.

We plan to hold this function every year and I hope that those of you who have been involved will return and give even more in 2009.

Much thanks to everyone who has participated so far, but we still have a long way to go... with that in mind, we are preparing for the culmination of our fundraiser on May 19th by making a great effort to reach our goal of $2500. Description: The book's intriguing plot revolves around the troopers of Pennsylvania State Patrol Troop D, who come into possession of what at first appears to be a vintage automobile. Closer inspection and experimentation conducted by the troopers reveal that this car's doors (and trunk) sometimes open to another dimension populated by gross-out creatures straight out of ... well, a Stephen King novel. As the plot progresses, the veteran troopers' tales of these visits from interdimensional nasties, and the occasional "lightquakes" put on by the car, are passed on to the son of a fallen comrade whose fascination with the car bordered on dangerous obsession.

The book uses fictional documents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_document), such as book excerpts, news reports, and hearing transcripts, to frame the story of Carietta "Carrie" White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie_White_%28Stephen_King%29), a teenage girl from Chamberlain, Maine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine). Carrie's mother, Margaret (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_White), a fanatical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanaticism)Christian fundamentalist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamentalist_Christianity), has a vindictive and unstable personality, and over the years has ruled Carrie with an iron rod and repeated threats of damnation. Margaret's mentally and emotionally abusive behavior has occasionally crossed over into physical abuse as well.

The story is deeply psychological in nature, capturing every essence of the psyche of Lisey as she engages on her quest.

In his novella, King tells the story of George, the teenage son of a single mother, and the only grandson of a family of union organizers in Maine. George's grandfather Henry, obsessed with the outcome of the 2000 election, has planted a giant billboard of homage to Al Gore in his front yard that he suspects has been defaced by the paperboy, now a sworn enemy

http://www.thedarktower.org/images/give/lock and key.JPGLocke & Key Joe Hill - Gabriel Rodriguez Issue #2
Signed by Joe Hill
Donated by EXPLORER
The story begins quietly, almost innocently, but it quickly turns mean and hard-edged, which is one of the qualities of Hill's writing. The story picks up with Sam Lesser and Al Grubb, two high school students that were counseled by Tyler Locke's father, turning up at the Locke house. A single page of simple conversation with Mrs. Locke turns chilling when we see the weapons they're packing.

http://www.thedarktower.org/images/give/postscripts10.JPG Postscripts #10 - Signed by Stephen King and Joe Hill plus others
Donated by Mulleins
Description: Back in 1998, Peter Crowther—already having tried his hand at writing, editing and even a spot of agenting—had a good idea: "Hey, why don't I start a publishing company of my own?" he said to himself. So he did. Then, in 2003, Pete had another good idea: "Hey," he said again, "let's start a magazine for PS . . . and let's call it POSTSCRIPTS!" So he did.
And now, in 2007, when he'd found out he was to be Publisher Guest of Honour at World Horror Convention 2007, Pete had yet another brainwave: "Hey," came the now-familiar cry, "why don't we do a super-duper bumper kick-ass issue that's around 150,000 words long (instead of the usual 60,000 or so) and approach some of the best writers in the business for material . . . and then launch it at the convention?"
So he did . . .
The result is POSTSCRIPTS #10, a veritable treasure-trove of unnervingly fabulous fantastical fiction plus a special guest editorial from "Mr. Horror" himself, STEPHEN JONES.

**ANNOUNCEMENT**

Through no fault of the person who donated it, I had a miscommunication about the copy of a 1st Edition of the Gunslinger. The one being donated is the Plume Edition
http://members.aol.com/tirfell/dtowero.jpg

This copy is very used.

The picture I posted was obviously the Grant First Edition of The Gunslinger which is the one I had the slipcase for.

Very sorry for the mix up. The picture and text I have in there will be removed and the edition I have will be added further down the list.

However, before everyone losses interest. We are adding signed copies of other books that have been donated so instead of being worse, the list is better.

Matt
04-14-2008, 07:47 AM
All you have to do to get an entry is donate 10.00 to our fund raiser. Donate 100 bucks, you get 10 entries.

Other ways are as follows.

Donate something for the giveaway and that will get you two entries.

Win a contest or something and you can get one. Buy something on DTbay and you get one.

We're not doing many entries that don't include a donation but there are a few ways.

Yeah, I was gonna send my beat up copy of "A Christmas Carol" that I've had since 6th grade, but I didn't think that qualified as a vintage antique.

Everything I'm sending is something I think someone would like to have, if anything doesn't qualify as a prize to your thinking, you can use it as a regular site giveaway or general fun contest prize in the future. Either way, it will end up in the hands of someone that will enjoy it.

**Announcement**

I spoke with Audrey yesterday about the generous donation they are giving in our fund raiser. Not only has she agreed to send it straight to the winner, but she also said Michael will personalize it for you.

I am going to add this into the description for the prize, just wanted to put it here so folks will know. Remember, this is 99/99 of "The End of the Road". Already unique, it will now be as unique as it gets.

Please give if you can.

In other news:

A question was raised about these items and weather or not they could be either traded or re gifted after the drawing.

The answer is YES!

My only requirement is that the giveaway items are not sold. I would be horrified to see these items on ebay.

If you would like to re gift or trade between each other, that's fine with me.

Also, If you are thinking of doing either of the above, let me know. I will ship it to whomever you like...one time. :grouphug:

Matt -

If I win that autographed Stephen King DT Gunslinger Born, after fainting with excitement, I can gaurantee I would NEVER sell it. It will become my most prized possession!

Onto other things, a proposal :

How about we all agree that if we win something we "dont want" (probably the wrong wording) that we put it on DTbay with any money it makes going right to Haven?

For instance, should I win the DT comics, I already have them, so would be happy to put them on DTbay for someone else here to enjoy, with any money they bring going to the Haven fundraiser coffers.

I'd like to do that, personally, anyways. Would that be possible?

Your thoughts?

Oh, and the MW personalization.... so incredibly cool !!!

This list just keeps getting better. Amazing.

Matt
04-17-2008, 09:00 AM
I think that is a great idea turtlex but I would like the items to remain a gift, I sure don't mind if the person who wins them gives them to someone else but I'm afraid the DTbay auctions might turn into a free for all.

And I am glad you brought this up because I have been meaning to explain why all these items are not simply being auctioned off in the first place.

The idea was if we auctioned anything with a "fair market value" (the Whelan print alone is worth 400.00+) our membership may not be able to afford it. Thereby alienating a vast majority of folks who just can't spend that kind of money on a print.

So we only get a few bidders if any--or we end up selling the item for much less than its worth which is a very big no-no in the collecting community (especially if it was something like the Whelan print that went for say...$50.00)

So basically everything on the giveaway list must be given away.

**ANNOUNCEMENT**

Hello all, I got a question and thought I would address it in public.

I am going to be suspending donations to The Big Give (meaning, items to give away) on May 10th. The reason being that I'm worried about getting it shipped in time.

While I hate to do this, I think it would be best. The donations to the giveaway so far have been amazing...no...staggering so thank you to everyone that has done so.

We'll accept them all the way up to May 10th.

Actual cash donations will be accepted through Paypal up to the moment of the drawing...6 PM Eastern Standard Time--May 17th 2008

Donations being sent through MUST arrive by mail delivery on May 17th to be included in the drawing.

That is a great question. I believe that it might be a good idea to simply auction them and send the money we get to Haven.

Any cash donations received after that will be returned with instructions on how to get them over to Haven if you still want to donate.

Mostly I just want people to know that they cannot be included in the giveaway past that time.

Patrick

Hey Matt, you might want to make that cutoff ten minutes or an hour before the big drawing, to allow for the vagaries and time delays of the interneck.

Matt
04-25-2008, 05:05 AM
I am planning on starting a new thread to post each drawing in. They are going to be on video and uploaded to youtube.

The video's should be about 1 min long apiece but we are going to have some fun with it. Make it a bit...theatrical so to speak.

This forum is for giveaways so I may decide to make a thread per item so folks can talk about each one of them specifically and the video will always be easy to find. (first post)

Matt - Question on the drawing. I was telling some friends about the cool stuff going on over here, about the donations and the Big Give and one of them asked how the drawing will work where there are folks with more than one "entry". If someone wins something, do all of their entries go into the next drawing, or would it be minus one entry, because that one already won something?

Not sure if that's clear. What I mean is - should someone have 5 entires (donated 50 smackers ). Say they are lucky enough to win a prize. Do they get 5 entries to the next item, or just 4 for the rest of the drawings. The exception, I understand, is that everyone only gets one entry for the Autographed DT Gunslinger.

Let me know if this is clear, or all over the place.

Thanks in advance.
turtlex

Matt
04-26-2008, 12:44 PM
Totally clear turtlex.

Lets say you have 5 entries. You are drawn and win Stand by Me on DVD. That physical piece of paper with your name on it is cast aside leaving only four for the rest of the giveaway.

I would think that people looking to get the stuff at the end should hope they are not drawn early.

but then there is the risk of not being drawn at all because there are a literal ton of people in this thing.

Ricky
04-26-2008, 01:43 PM
A ton of people? crap. Could you "accidently" burn some of the entries? :ninja:

turtlex
04-26-2008, 02:02 PM
Awesome, Matt.
Thanks for clarifying.
I figure there are going to be at least 250 entries (because I am sure we'll make the goal), plus the Big Give donator entries, so those are pretty sweet odds for some great prizes!!!

Hannah
04-26-2008, 02:39 PM
I'm actually planning on "running some numbers" today or tomorrow and posting some odds... so that may give you all an idea of what we've got going on right now.

There is actually a few more entires beyone 250--we've given them away for donations to the giveaway, auctions and some contests.

But I would say under 300 for sure. 1/300 chance to win something like that...not too bad.

I have changed the entry for the signed edition of Duma Key in the giveaway. Its a first edition-second printing. I understand through a conversation in the collectors forum that there is a bit of a difference.

However, its a signed first and an amazing gift for anyone who loves King

I have not updated with new arrivals yet because I am waiting on a bit of clarification on the items. I'm trying to do my best to make sure I have the right stuff before I throw it out there.

Even though that isn't going great.

Gramercy Hard Back Edition of The Stand--Dust Jacket Very Used

what is that? i never heard of that edition.

Its one Spencer sent me, there's a picture in the list.

It's a hardcover reissue of the 1990 version of The Stand, the "revised and updated" text King did. This edition, released in 2001, also features Black and White illustrations by Bernie Wrightson, who did Wolves of the Calla as well. Like Matt said, the dust jacket is very used, I got it in a bulk purchase, so I'm thinking it may have rolled around in the box on its way to me, the box wasn't very well packed. I tried to flatten it out and clean it up, but I didn't want to do too much and mess it up totally. The book itself is in good shape. Hope all that helps.

This is a message from the west coast where our Mescal is coming from. They are the only ones to import it from Mexico.

:duh: I'm a dummy nevermind, I just read that wrong

Matt
05-13-2008, 07:59 AM
Not at all Linda. Some people have more than one entry so what the stats say is that there have been 70 "individuals" so far that have participated in the fund raiser.

And they all get a one shot at the grand prize.

The 347 is the total number of entries (because some people have over 10) for the main giveaway.

alinda
05-13-2008, 08:01 AM
I see that Matt, I just read it incorrectly .
My brain malfuntion aside....Its a wonderful
chance for sure!

Hannah
05-13-2008, 08:02 AM
Anybody (besides Directors, who are no eligible for any of the prizes) who donated in any way gets one entry into the grand prize. The multiple entries are for the main drawing.

so basically, if you average out the $3100 by 70, it's about $44 donated per person?

And, WOW!! Only 70 people made the total over $3100!!! That's amazing!!!!

I like the 1 in 70 odds for that grand prize.

Hannah
05-13-2008, 08:18 AM
I'd say it's a little more complicated than that - because some of the money/items donated were not given entries due to the people donating either being ineligible or just too big to want something from our drawing (like Stephen King).

alinda
05-13-2008, 08:36 AM

I'd contribute some cash for that.

We already have that going on - I'm actually making the Thank You cards this week, and we'll all be signing them this weekend. The goal is to send one to all of the major contributors, along with a special one for Ms. Mod and Stephen King. Of course, everyone who participated will get a thank you as well.

Maybe i'm just slow because i'm tired and this is a stupid question but why isn't there 347 entries also for the grand prize?

Ricky
05-13-2008, 04:40 PM
Because each person has equal entry into the grand prize drawing. No matte how many entries you have, only one is entered into the grand prize drawing.

Hope that helps! :)

Matt
05-13-2008, 04:40 PM
Because folks for the main drawing have multiple entries. We are only allowing one entry for the grand prize so the number goes down quite a bit.

EDIT--

Thanks Ricky, that's exactly it.

I am waiting until after Saturday to have a cashiers check cut for the total. That's in case there are last minute donations.

The check itself will be from all of us here on TheDarkTower.com--I have a business account set up for us.

I am hoping to get a photo of all of the Directors along with a copy of the check to send out to SK.
