View Full Version : Gathering 2009 Poll

Please only vote for one location, and one date.
If you are unlikely to attend please DO NOT vote.
This should be to get an idea of where and when people who are likely to go want to meet.

Gotta be Maine in June. That's when King is there.

blackrose22
03-23-2008, 02:32 PM
I voted for June but didn't vote for where it should be held. But in Maine would be class if SK would be kind enough to make an appearance:drool: And as this is at least a year from now minimum its gives me time so start saving so you can definitely put my name down for it. Would love to go to this years one but got a lot on and not enough spare cash for it. And hopefully this years gathering is a success to spur on next years event.

If it were in June in Maine I'd likely manage to make it. Anywhere else at any time I'd try.

I think my bedroom should be added as an option for a gathering.

I voted N.O. but not a date. I'd really like it to be a southern place. And a beach would be good.

On the date, I don't know yet, because I'm not sure what days I'll be able to get off next year.

I voted for The City because SF is totally fun and easy for me to get to. Maine is sooo far away and expensive to fly into. I would love to do a Stephen King tour but it seems like it would be too much money and time away to make it work, for me.

I'm not ruling anything out.

Wuducynn

Yeah, but SF is sooooooooooooo far away from others too...while Maine is a 25 minute drive from my home.. :D Also, flying ANYWHERE is expensive.

I voted Boston and August. But I can do Maine, too. It's just a little further away.

June would be right at the end of school, so I don't know about that week. Kids usually get out the week right before that.

But, hey, since I am so close I can't complain too much. :D

I voted Maine and October as I always wanted to tour Kings' stomping grounds in the Fall when the leaves are falling.
Certainly SF would be easy for me, but I understand it would be far and expensive for many.

ooo, I really want this to happen now. I am talking to a band that does songs about him, seeing if we can get them to play a bar up there around that time, they usually do.

Anything else anyone else want me to arrange?

I know that Stu will open up for us on the weekend, if we are planning on spending money! LOL

The standpipe is wicked cool.

I didn't get to see his office last time I was there, maybe I can call Marsha and get in there!! HE HE

I voted Maine because it is closer for me. I am being selfish, I am sorry. June would be great for me, That week in October would be out because that is the week that my 3 youngest birthdays fall into. Mandi and Miranda, 10-16 and Carolann is 10-19. 10-16 is also my daughter Mirandas memorial because she was born and died the same day

I cant decide yet, N.O. is closer and easy to do from Fl.
Maine would be super cool, long drive but doable..... SK tour!
also I only work weekends so to take 3 days off
I'd have 11 days to play with. Still have a year to
finalize any planning it would take, but for me to
travel west coast is more of a challenge.

MonteGss

I have not voted because Jerome said not to unless we knew we were going. I want it to be in Chicago because it is closer and I'm not made of money.
Flying is too expensive. Flying to Vegas is fairly cheap though, so this year's gathering is more likely for me than in 2009. Unless of course Chicago wins.

Also this from the 2008 thread:

I like the idea of moving it around, but one of the nice things about Vegas is that it is, on average, the cheapest place to fly to from around the country. Just food for thought.

John Blaze
03-29-2008, 12:02 PM
I hadn't thought about how it's cheaper to Vegas, maybe next year, with a little more forewarnbing, I will be able to go, regardless of where it is. It just depends on money and time. If I can get the time off of work, and if I have the money, which I should.

blackrose22
03-29-2008, 02:52 PM
What are prices like for internal flights in the US. I was always under the impression that they are cheap enough. Flights to the US (JFK) from Ireland at the moment cost about €650/$1,000. That's not that expensive I think and when I head over it's not just for the DT.Com convention as I intend to stay for about 2/3 weeks and make a great holiday out of it to justify the cost. The east coast for me would be the best but don't care if it's the west cost either as I would love to visit San Francisco anyway. Must take a surf later on and find out about provisional prices for all the places in the poll to plan on what sort of holiday I'm going to have.

Same here. If it's in Maine where exactly are you talking about? Bangor is what I'm presuming but I could be wrong. Would like to know as there's five regional airports in Maine (so its says in a Maine tourist website) and the info would be great for making some plans even if it's still well over a year from now at the earliest.

I am sure stalkers already know, but King has two main residences.
He hangs around New England during the summer and early fall as he attends many Red Sox home games.
He stays in Florida during the coldest winter months and early spring. He attends Red Sox spring training games frequently.

That being said,
one thing for sure; I (and I hope any gathering members) want nothing to do with BOTHERING King. I certainly want to view his gated residence in Bangor, but have no intention of annoying him, his family, his staff, his dogs etc.

Up North, like Maine, wouldn't it be likely to be snowed already in October?

I'm just asking.

June is warmer, but Mid October should be the time on the Northeast coast where the leaves are falling. There is a very remote chance of snow:

The coming of October brings peak fall foliage season in Bangor. It is difficult to predict how the foliage will turn out, though. Despite enduring droughts in summer 1999 and 2001, trees still provided good leaf-peeping. The high temperature drops throughout the month, going from late-September's 60s to the 50s. You will definitely want a jacket with you when heading out this month. Late-night frosts become more common and you may find that your vehicle's defroster needs just a little bit more time to evaporate the thin crust of slushy moisture that invariably forms on the windshield and rear window during the night.

Hmmm... apparently I already voted.
My choices:
1) SF - any time of year could work because it's close.
2) Anywhere that is far enough away to fly: October timeframe.

Given family logistics and other planned trips, I won't be able to fly to another get-together until next Fall.

Aside from SF which is a no-brainer, I'd be happy to return to Vegas - I'll be ready to go back a year from now.

If we want to better accommodate the East Coasters, then I'd love to see Maine. A Maine trip has the longest odds though given that distance = cost.

I went ahead and chose Maine in October.

You know, when we did the "original" PalaverCon (Palaver Con Zero) we did it in Maine in October. The best thing is that there are tons of people who have summer houses up there, and they rent them out during the off-season for discounted prices. When we went there were seven of us and we were able to get a house right on Sebago Lake (north of Portland, not too far from Lovell) for eight days for about $135.00 each. It made it an awesome deal, and then we just basically had a week-long house party. Very good times.

I'm sure that I could get the information for the online rental listings where we found the house for that trip. For a place like Maine, renting a house is the best way to go to keep people's costs down. And it is beautiful in Maine in the fall.

And doing Maine in the summer would probably nearly double the lodging costs.

turtlex
10-21-2008, 07:05 AM
I usually go the first week in September - so the prices are just lowering after the Labor Day Holiday - stayed right near Acadia National Park - at http://www.edgewaterbarharbor.com/ - and it was affordable and close to things. Of course, I'm a bit of a National Parks geek so take that into consideration.

wizardsrainbow
10-21-2008, 07:15 AM
Acadia is gorgeous any time of year, and Bar Harbour is wonderful as well. There is a kick-ass theatre in town where you go sit in poof chairs/overstuffed chairs/couches and order pizza and beer. There is a large bingo-like sign board on the wall, and when your number lights up you get your pizzas and drinks and then kick back in your easy chair to watch the movie. Totally rocks.

Portland is a great city with great beers but is still pretty far from Bangor (3 hours if I recall). But 40 minutes north of Portland is Freeport, home of LL Bean and some 500 outlet stores.

Aaron
10-21-2008, 07:54 AM
I wouldn't mind being a bit closer to Bangor. We didnt get to go last time because it was so far away.

Ooh, what if we did it in New Hampshire at the hotel that inspired the hotel in The Talisman. I went there with a few folks after PalaverCon 2005 and it is beautiful. Can't remember the name of the place for the life of me, though. It's in Portsmouth, not far from the DMG offices.

It would probably be terribly expensive, though. :(

Wiz - Yes! I was right there this September!! Right by that theater, there's a great little mexican restaurant. We went there for dinner twice in as many nights, it was that good!

It would probably be terribly expensive, though. :(

Wow, you said it, brother.

I just did a quick check using Nerak's link ( thankee ) , and the cheapest room is $279 a night, and that's a weeknight, with the weekend spiking up to $359.

That's a little pricey for this turtle.

DBF and I have done the vacation house thing in the past, and it's far better than a hotel if you have a group that can get along. Much cheaper, you can cook your own food (DBF loves to cook, hint hint) and you can sit around and drink and play board games or cards all night if you want. Good times. :D

Aaron
10-21-2008, 10:20 AM
Yeah, we did the full cooking on a campfire thing in the backyard, and went through case after case of beer and wine. Very good times. And an awesome cookout is the best!

I read someone post people who are only inclined to go should vote. I think for a lot of people where and when plays a huge roll. There will always be those die hards who will go where ever, when ever. Many have family/business travel obligations so the when and where play a huge factor. So I voted but am only inclined to go on certain dates as I travel on one of those selected dates. So mayhap what I am saying is if you can only go to certain place on/or certain dates that shouldn't disqualify you from voting. You should be able to vote, and if things work out and the majority speaks in your favor, great. If not, than theres always next year. I do love me a good democracy and I believe majority should rule. If you have no intentions going at all, than dont vote. Maybe this is more for my clarification?!?!

Aaron
10-21-2008, 01:19 PM
I would say that is absolutely right. Location and dates are two of the biggest deciding factors for most people with something like this. So yes, if one of the dates and locations would enable you to potentially be in attendance, then please vote for them.

Like you said, it is really just the people who have no intention of going at all that need not apply.

Maybe the Mid-West, in which case Chicago would be a good location. Since the first one was held in New England, the last one in the desert. Then again, since most of the people here seem to live on the East Coast a state in this part of the country might make more sense.

I am not sure there is anyway to make one of these things real cheap for folks. Vegas was relatively close by and I'm sure me and Dora dropped around 1000.00 over there and we sure weren't alone.

Its worth every penny by any stretch of the imagination but it would be hard for someone to go anywhere for a few days without dropping some bucks.
