You knew it was only going to be a matter of time. :P

--------------------------------------------------------------------

This weekend against the BoSox sucked for my Twins. At least they didn't sweep us. *shrug* Time to bring on the other Sox, then we take on Detroit again. What an exciting week. I can't wait.

Anyone else pissed that Clemens went to the Yankmees? Dude, if you can only play a partial season for, like, three years, it's time for you to retire. ;)

I'm bummed that the Mavs are out of the running for the NBA. Guess my allegiance goes to the Suns now... *shrug*

Jorge
05-06-2007, 10:09 PM
The worst part about Clemens though is the amount of money. I heard it was a one year $28 million deal. That's fucking ridiculous for playing only 2/3 of the season.

As far as the Twins go, I'm not too disappointed. We fared better against them than most teams. With the overall score of the series being 7-4, I'm satisfied. I'll be going to the Twins-Blue Jays game on the 26th. That ought to be fun.

Being a Warrior fan, it was great to see the sour puss look on Cuban's face when the Mav's lost.

Are you serious? 28 mil for a partial season? Holy Jeebus. I hadn't heard the details, all I'd heard was that he was a pinstripe man now.

Yeah, ball players get a ridiculous amount of money.

But the thing that is pissing me off is Barry Bonds. Inevitably, that LOSER will pass Hank Aaron and I think it is a shame that Bonds will be in the record books. I think he is both a liar and a big baby.

Rjeso
05-07-2007, 08:42 AM
Amen to that. Did you ever see that Onion article about how Bonds' name was going down in the record books? Check it out. (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/48895) I got a laugh out of it.

Also, do you read The Dugout (http://www.wordupthome.com)? Check out the name they gave him: LicenseToPills. Gotta love it.

I mainly made it for my fellow Bat-Girl readers, so there is heavy use of nicknames that are specific to her readership.

Also, I was behind the backstop net and have no image stabilizing lens yet, so some of them are a bit blurry. Also also, I shake my fist at the tall dude in the red hat. Grr to you, sir. Grr.

Dont worry! Clemans $28M will be prorated to the # of games remaining when he makes his start. So, if he starts on the 28th of May (one potential start date) he would get approx $9.7M for being there for roughly 70 percent of the games. Chump change! :-)

Oh but they can't win without a running game....remember?
What a load of crap! Go Pack!

I know, no run game=0 wins, but Pack makeno run =7

I guess i don't understand math?

I find it hilarious how these guys need to come up with ever more inventive explanations to explain how the Packers, despite their record, really do "suck," or how Brett Favre should pack it in.

I was listening to a host on WFAN late nights who went into this extended monologue explaining how the Packers weren't "for real" after their latest victory.

It would be great to see them go 15-1, just to see what the reaction would be among the sports world commentariat.

Looks like Oklahoma City might be getting a pro basketball team. The owners say they are gonna move the Sonics here.

I thought the plan was that the Hornets were going to stay there permanently... huh. Wonder when that changed? Regardless, Seatlle doesn't have enough support for the SuperSonics out there, and the NO/OK Hornets drew a hell of a crowd, so it wouldn't surprise me one bit if the do move the Sonics there.

Yeah, Skolpadda, I dig basketball. It's my second love, right behind baseball. I'm a Timberwolves fan. Pity me.

The NCAA college basketball tournament is awesome, especially when there are a lot of upsets like in Friday's round one games! :excited: Too bad I picked the wrong ones.

I do not know how many of you follow the NCAA tournament (probably not a lot based on the response to Randall Flagg's attempt to get a competition going) but if you like sports at all you should be watching. I know I have not been very productive at work because of it.

I suggest next year we try again at the March Madness competition but instead of picking against point spreads we should link up to CBS Sportsline and use their bracket manager. It will track everything for you so all you have to do is sign-up and make your picks. All the managers at work are doing it and it makes the whole thing even more fun.

Just kidding, I hope he rocks it for the Mets. That's a team I can respect. Plus, with El (Ex)Presidente being in the NL now, at least we don't have to face him unless we draw the Mets in interleague play sometime. At least there's that. Still, I'm gonna miss Johan lots and lots. :(

Anyway, Torii's Return to the Dome was nice, I saw him get a little misty eyed when the crowd gave him a standing O and wouldn't stop until he tipped his hat twice. Fortunately for us, he didn't hit well and he didn't get a whole lot of opportunities to rob us of anything. Carlos Go-Go-Gomez was ROCKIN' it last night - four stolen bases already. Holy hell, can that man run. It's going to be a lot of fun watching him play, I think, and I'm really excited about him in CF. Also, Hernandez did a nice job going seven innings, which we neeeeed. It's nice to have a starter that can eat up innings like that again. Monroe didn't do anything as DH, Everett and Lamb each got on base a couple of times, and Harris teamed up with Morneau for an excellent DP, so the new guys had a good night.

It was a great win for the Twins last night. Here's to a similar '08 season!

The whole bullpen looks to be in full form right now. I'm not that worried about Wagner. He still saves many more games than he loses. If they get into the post-season, he'll have another shot at winning in the clutch situation. The Mets still need to find a new closer because Wagner is getting quite old and can't do it forever. They need to have a replacement ready to go. That said, as far as pitching goes, I'm more concerned about Pedro's frailty and when the hell Hernandez is coming back than I am about Wagner blowing a big save.

Thunder is indeed better than Barons. That said, I'm not crazy about the logo. I suppose they painted themselves into a corner on that one as there isn't really a good way to visually represent thunder, but it looks more like a logo for a basketball league with the word thunder printed on top of it.

Either way, good luck to Oklahoma City with your new franchise. Win or lose, you have Durant on your team and he will be fun to watch.

I mean, what grown man wants to be on a team named the Energy?

No doubt. That's much more of a WNBA sounding name (no offense to the WNBA, but they have the worst franchise names in sports).

Since we are talking about team names, I personally prefer names that relate somehow to the home city. For instance, the Tampa Bay hockey franchise is called the Lightning, which works as Tampa is known as the lightning capital of the world. On the other hand, the Jazz should have changed their name when they moved. It was perfectly suitable for New Orleans, but it's a bit ludicrous for Utah.

ps. I don't know much about Oklahoma, but I would suspect it gets it's fair share of thunder.

The Lakers is definitely a stupid one. Worked great for Minneapolis, not so much L.A. The one I always find interesting is the Rockets. Not sure why the team was named that in San Diego but it works perfectly for Houston (home of NASA).

ANYTHING but the Barons. Yeah, we really want to be tied to Oil Barons with gas prices the way they are. We really want to be the most hated team in America.

While part of me would like to see Torre return to the Series, I just cannot bring myself to root for a team with Manny Ramirez on it. I will be the first to admit, Manny is one of the greatest hitters of this or any other era (his stats make that case all by themselves). However, the man is a complete degenerate. Fighting with his teammates in the dugout is bad enough, but the day he put his hands on the team's traveling secretary is the day he proved he is without any class whatsoever. (My favorite was in a game against KC when Joe Mauer hit a dinger to tie the game. The people next to us, who had gotten up and left, came slinking back five minutes later with sheepish grins on their faces. We ended up winning that game.)

Haha, don't even get me started on bandwagon jumpers. I remember sitting in the Diamond View section (2nd best seating tier) but paying home run porch prices back in the early 90's because nobody was attending games. I know that part of it was the strike, but people still weren't coming back even after attendance at other parks picked up again. The team wasn't good, and there were no bandwagoners. It was just the few thousand of us who still attended because we loved the team.

I'm still happy to see the stands as full as they are these days, though, because it means my guys can feel pretty damn good over bringing in such a crowd, even though it is a small-market team.

It made me stop going to Lightning games for a long time. I don't even like the Lightning, but I love hockey so I'd go when there were players on other teams I'd want to see play. Once the Lightning won the Cup you'd think that victory suddenly bestowed knowledge upon the fans. It was not fun to deal with.

Wait until the NHL playoffs and you'll see much better beards. Speaking of Youkilis, what is the deal with the way he shakes his booty before the pitcher throws the ball? It's downright disturbing to watch. It also is exactly the same every time and seems a lot like OCD. It reminds me of Mahmoud Abdul Raouf preparing to shoot foul shots.

And did ya notice how Youklis hold hte bat. His two hands are about a foot apart right up to the sometime after the pitcher releases the ball. Very odd in deed, but very productive.

And his voice does not match his beard. You'd expect a deep thundering basso but get a twiny boston new england accent - its weird!

I tried watching a Knicks-Bulls game last season on Ch.9. It was too painful for words.

Maybe when the Dolans sell the franchise I'll start to muster some enthusiasm for NBA basketball again. I just can't sell myself on the idea that Mike D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh are going to salvage the crap sandwich they inherited.

They're not. I think they showed that with the draft this year by drafting someone who may someday turn out to be a good sixth man because D'Antoni used to play in a European league with the guy's dad instead of DJ Augustin who I am relatively sure will be a star in the NBA sometime real soon, at least sooner than Danilo Gallinari will be.

That's what made absolutely no sense.

If this dude turns out to be another turkey, a la Frederic Weis, they're in for a long season at MSG.

I regret ever signing up as a fan on my Facebook profile, because now I'm getting invitations to buy season tickets.

You've got to be kidding me!?

Season tickets? The last time I bought tickets to a Knicks game Latrell Sprewell was still in the starting five.

jayson
10-22-2008, 06:06 PM
Oh if only I could erase Weis from my mind. Drafting him was the worst moment in Knicks' history since six-foot-ten Charles Smith refused to dunk the ball to eliminate the Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Even if Gallinari turns out to be decent, he's not really going to be a star. With the 6th pick in the draft they need to aspire to higher than a guy that may make the team someday and contribute well off the bench. They probably could have still picked up Gallinari in round two, or even as a free agent since I'm guessing no other team even had him on their radar.

I think the worst moment in Knicks' history was deciding to hire Scott Layden as GM. Or thinking that Isiah Thomas would be an improvement upon Scott Layden. Or, possibly, letting Charles Dolan have a hand in running Cablevision's sports properties. Or believing that acquiring Stephen Marbury was a good idea. Or trading Patrick Ewing to Seattle.

I don't know. There were so many mind-bogglingly idiotic decisions made in such a relatively short period of time that it's hard to process, and come to a conclusion as to which one is the most soul-crushingly stupid.

It is a lesson in how to destroy a franchise in a decade's time. Trading Ewing definitely pissed me off beyond belief. The guy deserved to finish his career as a Knick.

And I don't get people who are planning on rooting for The Nets once they move to Brooklyn. Assuming that Atlantic Yards is ever built-and I think that's a risky assumption, in any case-I don't see why you would start rooting for them just because they moved across the Hudson.

I used to watch The Nets play when they had Kenny Anderson, Derrick Coleman and Drazen Petrovic, and their games were broadcast on Ch. 9, but I don't think that made me a Nets fan.

Granted, it's kind of embarrassing to be wearing a New York Knicks jersey to The Giants victory parade in lower Manhattan, but I don't see why I would want to root for a team just because they've relocated to my borough.

I enjoyed both of those games, though I agree, the Super Bowl was better. I'm much more into defense than I am scoring.

As a lifelong Jets fan, those two games were the only two times I have ever rooted for the Giants. Ultimately, it came down to "a team from New York" versus "a team from New England". The choice was obvious for me.

It was funny, I went down to South Street Seaport to watch it in a sports bar. There were two or three people rooting for The Patriots, although one of them was actually a Red Sox fan who couldn't care less about football, and was just trying to annoy all of the New Yorkers in the room, and the other was rooting for The Giants by the 4th quarter. There was also a couple sitting next to me who were wearing Florida Gators hoodies.

I think a fifth of the people who came there didn't even watch the game, but were just interested in the buffet.

I love college football.

You should be proud of OK State. They are an excellent team and there is no shame in losing to this year's Texas team. They are #1 for a reason. The Big 12 is, without question, the toughest in college ball.

I wish I could say I was still proud of my USF Bulls, but they embarrassed themselves yesterday against Louisville. Losing to Louisville in basketball is just fine, but in football not so much. With two losses and little chance of winning the Big East title, it's looking like an invite to a decent bowl game has passed. Last year they went to the Sun Bowl. This year it may be even less prestigious than that, if at all.

I think Oden may be the basketball equivalent of Eric Lindros. A whole lot of hype for what they did at the non-professional level, followed by injury after injury once they turned pro.

Even when he was on the floor, he wasn't the best rookie Portland had out there. Fernandez showed me a lot more than Oden did.

Ruthful
10-29-2008, 09:04 AM
Didn't Lindros have a pretty good career in the NHL, esp. when you include all of the on-ice fights? Or am I thinking of his brother?

jayson
10-29-2008, 09:13 AM
Lindros (Eric) had a fairly good career as far as scoring goes (865 pts total)considering the number of games he missed due to his numerous injuries, but he was (a) not the next great superstar he was touted to be, and (b) he never took a team to a Cup victory. As for the fights, yes, unlike a lot of other top players, Lindros could defend himself and that was a plus.

In the end, when you look at all the Flyers gave up for him, it turned out that Lindros wasn't even as good as Peter Forsberg who was only one of the seven players and two draft picks the Flyers traded in order to get Lindros' rights from Quebec. As Flyers' fan, I think we'd have been better off never having made the deal to get him.

His brother Brett had an even worse injury situation, having played only 51 games across two seasons for the Islanders before retiring due to post-concussion syndrome from the multiple concussions he sustained. Brett was never going to be the player his brother was, but he could have been a formidable power forward in the league. He was a better fighter than Eric as well, and I remember seeing the two of them go at it Brett's rookie year. He beat the living crap out of Eric.

I think it should be fairly obvious to anybody who watches the game that LeBron James is a better all around player than any individual player on the Celtics. What LeBron lacks is a complete team that complements his game. The Celtics are a better team than the Cavaliers, that is true (or at least it was last season). That does not in any way mean that any individual Celtic is a better player than LeBron James. Championships are won by teams, not individuals. Boston had a great team last year and there are some great players on it. I'd still take James over any single one of them as far as his overall game goes.

The years that the Bulls didn't win the championship didn't mean that someone on the championship team was a better player than MJ. The teams Wayne Gretzky was on in his prime didn't always win the Cup yet few would debate that #99 was still the best player in hockey at the time.

How I love me some Blazer talk. Fernandez is the man, no one figured he would adjust the to the US game as fast as he has. He's scoring 16-20 points in as many minuets coming off of the bench. Oden had so much hype, even after sitting out a year and now where sick of him. He's being compared to Sam Bowie, who was drafted over Michael Jordon in Portland and turned out to be a bust. Oden needs to start behind Pryzbilla so he can develop and relax a little, taking some of the pressure off. Travis Outlaw is in jeopardy of being traded as Nicolas Batum, also a rookie, is developing extremely fast and very nice.

I never expected much from Oden. Portland blew it by not drafting Kevin Durant. Oden may turn out to be a halfway decent defensive player if he can ever stay healthy (a big if) but he'll never be half the player Durant already is.

We already have Lamarcus Aldridge, no need for Durant.

jayson
11-04-2008, 10:29 AM
Aldrige is a power-forward. Durant is a small-forward/shooting guard (a 6'10" small forward no less). There's certainly room for both of them in a starting line-up of a team with any aspirations of going anywhere.

Arthur Heath
11-04-2008, 10:48 AM
Indeed they do play different positions, though a balance of power players always needs to be taken in consideration. There would be far too many people in need of the ball. More chiefs than Indians.

jayson
11-04-2008, 10:58 AM
Personally, I'd rather have two guys that can each get me 15-20 points per game than just one of them. One of them is going to have an off night here and there and it be nice to know that when that happens, the scoring isn't over. They can learn to share the ball. There's plenty of time in an NBA game for each of them to get their points. Plus at his size, Durant is a bonus defensively. How many other 6'10" guys can play guard?

I just think in the long run, taking Oden over Durant will feel even more like taking Bowie over Jordan than it already does. Trust me, as a Knicks' fan, I know all about watching the wrong dude get drafted.
