Seven Books full of fantastic art work. Which book was your favorite?

what picture within that book means the most to you and why?

Letti

The first one and the last one. They are like pictures from my mind...

I'm going with the last book of the series, and the pencil sketch of Roland at Oy's grave. Or, it would be Roland carrying Jakes body. Those two, very touching.

DT7 by far. Followed by Song of Susannah and Wastelands on an equal footing.

Daghain

DT 7. I love the cover art, and also love the one of Roland sitting in front of the door Susannah left from. Plus, I'm a huge Whelan fan.

Michael Whelan would be proud to see our poll.....
hands down the best in my opinion too!

But my favorite pic standing on its own is of
Roland, smiling very strangely in Drawing of the Three.
See pic belowhttp://charnelhouse.tripod.com/drawing1.jpg
I wish I had a print of this for my wall @ home to me its the best one.

If I must choose between DT1 and DT7 I pick DT1.

No one said you must choose between those two.

YOU MUST..

it was a tough choice between 1 and 7 but it was Whelan all the way. He's my fav visual interpreter of the series and anyone who would ever do a movie would be well-advised to consult him heavily on the look of it. his depiction of oy is almost EXACTLY as i pictured him, he knows jake is blonde, his rolands are just stunning, and his pic of Los on his throne is the single best pic in the series.

You have got to go check out his web site

I voted for The Dark Tower. Whelan sees Roland, his pictures are Roland.
The Waste Lands is my second; I love some of those pictures so much.

On a side note, I just realized that my trade paperback copy of DT3 contains duplicate pictures of He fired... and it is missing the picture of Gasher and Jake. Hmm.

Exactly. I feel the same about Los, and Oy. EVERY other depiction of Oy falls short.

Hey, never forget Calvin Tower...that could be worth something!

Yes, I suppose so. :)

As for Whelan's Oy...I'm not too sure. I've never seen a picture of him that is what I first saw in my mind. The pic of Oy in DT7 is too doggish for my taste. I guess I always had a "cuter" Oy in my head.

I'd like to know who voted for WAG.

Was it the Susanah that looks like Willie Nelson that they thought was so awesome?

in my opinion, WAG should have had the best artwork, but had the worst.

I liked Book IV's artwork. You shouldn't impose the standards of representational art onto surrealism.

Michael Whelan's-the final book, if you put a gun to my head. SOS's was also pretty nifty. But I enjoyed all of the artwork, with the exception of Bernie Wrightson's, which was simply execrable. Even the illustrations for The Wastelands, which were relatively conventional, were good, IMO.

Wuducynn
03-15-2008, 03:48 PM
 DT 7 is my favorite also, as you can see, followed by SOS and The Wastelands as number 2. Wrightson's artwork is awful. I honestly don't understand why King went with it.

Bethany

for the sake of choosing one, i'll go with DTVII but none of the artwork captures the feel of the any of the books for me. absolute least favorite--Wag.

MonteGss
03-15-2008, 03:49 PM
I liked Wolves artwork more than I like Wizard and Song's. Bernie isn't even close to the best but I like straight forward pictures more than the odd interpretations of Wizard and Song. Song was better than Wizard, but not by much.

The first time I read DT1 and DT2, I read without pictures so it was very nice to see some when I read The Wastelands. By the time Book 7 came out, Whelan was crowned Art-King in my book. His door definitely says "The Artist." :)

This one was a toughie but I went with The Dark Tower. I've only got the first three in paperback and they don't have too many pics in them compared to the hardback editions. And the amount of different artwork that differs from one part of the world to another is staggering. SoS is a close second for me.

Letti
03-16-2008, 10:08 AM
And which is your absolutely favourite artwork and why?
It's way too hard to choose but somehow I feel this pic is the closest to my heart:

As for what I voted for....DTVII. Michael Whelen is Mr. Dark Tower. But it was a hard choice for me between DTVII and DTI. However, this picture sealed the deal for me:

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m168/Los_The_Red/TheCrimsonKing3-1.jpg

A close second for my favorite picture is the Whelan art from DTI with Roland standing at the end of a pile of dead bodies in Tull with his guns drawn.

I call it: artistic license. :)
I never saw his hair color that way or read it that way either. Now, it is closer than Bernie's interpretation for sure, as well as Dameron's but to totally rip on them for not making Jake's hair color blonde.....going a little overboard. :)
Granted I do agree that Whelan seems to be the only artist that is clearly a fan of the series and has actually read the books.

Fav book, deff DT7 but just as equally DT3. Fav image, hmm well the one to inspire me to break from a huge personal project I have been chugging on for along time and start my Road to the Dark Tower series was the image of Jake in front of the Keystone Lot Rose. I'm a particle freak that does a ton of scientific viz (astro-physics related so that image just sucked me in long and hard to wanting to create my own vision of the Lot Rose.)
Most disappointed work, DT4 fav book but not happy with most of the work from it. However we happily have the comic series to make up for it!!!

I'm finally voting in my own poll.

I've decided that The Gunslinger is the best for me because it was the first. When I first read The Gunslinger, I couldn't take my eyes off that last picture of Roland on the beach. Eventhough, The Dark Tower VII has some beautiful paintings that one in The Gunslinger holds to me the most.
