http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/official.jpgThe official Stephen King site is getting a face lift. There is a preview of the new format at this link

http://www.stephenking.com/site_preview/ (http://www.stephenking.com/site_preview/)

check it out if you get the chance--obviously, this entire fan site owes part of its existence to Mr King and the wonderful people on his staff.

Love it! Its a much nicer format than the current one. Also, best part?

New Dark Tower Web Site coming in April - Combining the classic seven part epic with Marvel's Dark Tower series, the redesign is just what the doctor ordered for the constant Dark Tower reader.

I'm hoping (against hope, I know) that they make the forums UNmonitored, just as these are. Posting on them now is a real pain! (And I don't mean Blaine!)

I get a black screen in firefox and have already mentioned it.

Yep, I am going to ask about it. Hate to get the two sites confused.

Matthew: It looks like you can change to the new skin anytime you like, its a choice in the bottom left of the forum.

I think its really cool that the communities on both boards can mingle together. Both sites offer so many different things that its easy to see a time when all you will need is these two sites to get everything you could ever want about Stephen King.

I love that.

Too bad they haven't posted the UK Dark Tower book covers. I love the latest ones (and their re-issue of the first four) that have all the same basic format--The Dark Tower--but as the books progress, the tower on the cover gets larger and larger, until, in book seven, it's looming over the viewer.

I think there may be an idea that there are sites out there without the "the" on the front.

darktower.com
darktower.net

Obviously not true but that may have something to do with it. They look like they are classified as different than the "the" variety.

Thanks Chooch--looks like your thread was merged with the existing one about SK.com's overall facelift.

Up thread there is a bit of conversation about the "official" classification. The Dark Tower portion of Stephen King's site has always been there, it just was recently revamped.

In a search on google for The Dark Tower, that link is always first, no matter what. As it should be.

"Official" in this case just means that it is the one site that Stephen King himself is officially associated with. The man has to be careful about what he puts his name on so it makes total sense that only one Dark Tower site could be official.

However, we are the fastest growing and arguably the most popular un official Dark Tower fan site on the entire internet. Which makes us #2.

Oh, and the "Under Construction" dealio is for a site that doesn't have the "the" in front. Both redirect to the same page. It is under construction at this time, but they are not a fan site and it actually has a link to US for those who want a fansite.

Didja notice that thedarktowercompendium (http://www.darktowercompendium.com/index0.html) is not listed as an unofficial site! The guy that runs it was in SKEMERs and his site has migrated from a "get yer SK news here" site to a "buy yer SK stuff here" site! The site owner is a guy named Anthony and I do not think that his site gets updated a lot, but I do remember him getting some kind of endorsement from Stephen King a few years ago!

Matt
04-18-2008, 09:51 AM
I did notice that.

I read all over the mans site, obviously its not a forum but more of an informational thing. I guess he was a huge deal back in the day. Has a book from SK personalized to him.

"Antman"

I suppose at some point, we may get to a place where we have that one beat because it hasn't been updated since July of last year.

But we are second on that list which is a pretty cool thing.

Glad my wife is fully for it.

I think we will always have him beat hands down because our board is a community, and unique because of that.

Even the SKMB is closed on the weekend, we are open 24/7. We'll always have unique stuff for people to do that they can't get anywhere else.

That he was considerate enough to provide a link to this site is very cool. I like the guy already. Do we know if he is he a member here? I hope so.

Side note: This sort of thing is a big reason that I always use "TDT.com" for short-hand reference to this site. A lot of people use the short-hand "DT.com", but to the casual observer, that would refer them to a different site.

AMC named the Dark Tower portion of King's website Site of the Week

Stephen King considers his Dark Tower series to be his master work, and its roots run through almost every other piece of fiction he's written. While fan sites are plentiful, King's own authoritative new site has been launched as a codex encapsulating the entire Dark Tower mythos, with all the attendant artwork, audiobook excerpts, and plot interconnections that a new or long-time reader could hope for -- and when all else fails, there's even a glossary to light your way.

What’s New on StephenKing.com (http://www.stephenking.com/site_preview/whats_new.html)
(Updated June 13th, 2008 12:00:00 am)
We are making headway with the new site but it will be at least another month or so before we have all of the data input to have this be what we would consider “finished” with the first phase. Here is a sneak preview of what will be coming your way. This is still a work in progress and there are bound to be some glitches with information that needs to be added (we are still working on that, so it’s possible we haven’t forgotten it—we just haven’t gotten to it yet) and not all links are fully functioning. We have some exciting interactive pieces still in the design phase and it is our intent that this site will be more fluid and hopefully more user-friendly than the old version. We will be running both sites for a while until we’re satisfied the new one is fully functional. Have fun giving this a test drive and checking out all the bells and whistles!

Under links we are listed as "The Dark Tower fan site" I love it!

Nothing like an upgrade, eh?

I've just added a lot of character lists today (in The Library), and I'll be adding more tomorrow. Once Google finishes reindexing the site, you should be able to cross reference every name appearance within every work right from the search page.

You mean...like not actually from sk.com? A phishing type thing?

I looked it over pretty closely and it was basically just clicking a link to the forum, was actually from the sk.com URL. Really seemed like an automated vBulletin feature that may have misfired accidentally its happened with some of our automated emails in the past.

But its possible I guess.

Maybe I'm just being over cautious, but perhaps you should check with Jordan or one of the other mods and see if there was a misfiring. I just find it odd that you received it because you supposedly hadn't been on the site in over 90 days. And do they really remove accounts that are inactive over 120 days?

I think my biggest problem with the forum at StephenKing.com is that the moderator has to pass everything before it's posted. This creates delays that I don't like. You never know when your contribution is going to be posted, if at all.

I received that 90 day email also, but in my case it was true. I hadn't posted in months.

I like the SKMB in general and recognize a number of the members from here and elsewhere. But the delay in posts actually posting is too annoying for me. Therefore I rarely check that site. I doubt I have even 10 posts there.

By the way, what does it take to post your own avatar on SKMB? It appears that you can only choose from the site's prescribed list. Is that right?

Daghain

Matt

That is correct, no custom avatars, no signatures.

My personal opinion is that it is necessary. SK has a HUGE interest to protect and if it seems like over kill, it probably is.

He is more famous and widely known in this world than just about anyone. Even if they don't read his books

But I agree its frustrating

Jordan
09-19-2008, 04:37 PM
Yeah. We get a lot of complaints about the moderation, etc.

Basically, we're moderating for a few reasons:

We hate spam
Stephen has to legally worry about people posting things and then trying to sue him
It keeps things a little more civil, and lets us have a politics thread (for example)
It keeps questions answered in the FAQ from popping up everywhere

There's more, but that's what comes to mind right now.

We did originally keep the board on on the weekends, but the moderator's life was pretty rough on Monday mornings.

As for those 90 day emails... we did send them out. We're trying out a new defunct account pruning system, and apparently it didn't work 100% well . The next cycle should work out those kinks. Sorry about that. Please let me know if you get flagged again.

Steve thinks that it is important to have someone moderating the board whom he trusts to represent him. Pretty much, that's Marsha. As it stands, we won't be adding any mods or opening the board for posting over the weekends.

Hello Everyone,

We are very happy to see so many people eager to get inside "The Office." We have been working very hard to finalize the 3D art and populate the office with overall content. The Beta Group has also helped us to greatly refine the art, usability and controls late in the development. Big thanks to them!

We have now reached a point that we can set a hard release date. - Which is now Thanksgiving Morning.

If for some reason we are able to get the project completed before hand, we will "soft launch" it to users of the MB and Newsletter system.

We look forward to you feedback and hope that you enjoy The Office as much as we have enjoyed building it. http://www.stephenking.com/forums/images/smilies/smile2.gif Its pretty crazy!

-Brian

PS: Also, we posted a new banner on The Office page, you can get a small taste of the art if you check it out:

You might want to check out the Office social group (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/group.php?groupid=60) on King's message board for tips and clues. Jordan (the webmaster) writes:

Once you have completed the first level, the system will track your score and level as long as you're logged in. We'll be adding more questions for higher levels next week. Just to mention it again, the log in is not the same as your message board account (that may change in the future, though), and you cannot create an account until you have found (and answered correctly) the first ten questions.

Several objects do not have more information pop-ups just now, including all of the glass balls. If you find any other errors, please let me know via PM. Thanks.

Hey!

Season's greetings everyone! Its time to update the Office for the holiday season!

We got a pretty cool idea for the update. As there will be a Christmas Tree in the reception area, we need to decorate it. That's where *you* come in.

Here's your chance to add your personal touch to The Office Christmas Tree. Between now and Monday at 9am, (12/8) please post an image of your favorite Christmas ornament from your family collection to this thread.

Images should be shot *absolutely straight* from the front. If possible please shoot the ornament on a solid background ala "green screen." (White walls work well.) Please also post high res images as they will need to be processed into 3D transparencies.

Feel free to post a comment regarding the items as well.

Jordan, Marsha and I will then choose our favorites and fill up the tree. (No hard feelings if your does not make the cut, we only have about 10 slots open. Wish we could add them all!)

Also, Ms. Mod has requested that we honor the tree by not posting any funky or macabre ornaments. That is not to say, funny, or kitchy is not ok. Just not dark stuff. Thanks!

Image Specs for Submissions:

At least 800x600 72 dpi - (Light compression)

Max at 1280x800 100 dpi - (Light compression)

Have fun!

Hey, you guys--here's my latest big idea: what if we got t-shirts and sold 'em here at the site? We could mark 'em up a buck or two, nothing radical, and donate the profits to The Haven Foundation, or something. No big deal and no big profits, just something for fun. I was thinking CONSTANT READER and my signature but maybe you have your own ideas. I'm asking ahead of time so the ill-tempered among you won't flame me. Just one thing:

Yep I have gotten past a few by rewording. These five though I have tried every conbo I could think of and still not correct? I will sit on it a while and see if I have a revelation or something! :-)

One in particular is a date and you know you can format / abbreviate dates in dozens of ways! :-)

Posted by Ms. Mod on the SKMB

We are now live with a storefront on CafePress.com for the Constant Reader design. In addition to the t-shirts, there are also mugs, tote-bags, hoodies, and many other items to tempt you. http://www.stephenking.com/forums/images/smilies/smile2.gif We've only marked items up $1 from the cost charged by CafePress.com and that will be donated directly to The Haven Foundation (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehavenfdn.or g).

You can check it out and place your order at the stephenking.com storefront (http://www.stephenking.com/forums/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cafepress.com% 2Fstephenking).

We will have the other designs (Haven and Dark Tower) after the New Year.

To be merged with the SKMB discussion thread later.

I thought you might like to know who Steve is picking. http://www.stephenking.com/forums/images/smilies/smile2.gif

It's Steeler time, without a doubt. Big Ben will lead, and The Burg will be dancing in the streets.
Steelers 31
Cardinals 10

Dear Constant Reader,

Would you like to help with a new EW column? If so, drop us a line here and tell us the name of one or two songs that are annoying because you just can’t get them out of your head. For me, one of those songs would be Tainted Love by Soft Cell. I wake up in the middle of the night and that damn song is going through my head. If I use your song submission, I’ll include your name in the column along with the name of the song unless you tell me not to.

--Steve

She went on to say that you can find the thread for song submissions in Chattery Teeth.
