For those of you who can't, or are sick of drawing people, here you go!

This one has a fairly wide open interpretation - the article for the Horn of Eld can be found here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=1792).

Not much help, but I'm interested to see what you all come up with.

Contest will end March 23, 2008.

Thanks, Dag. That's completely done in photoshop... Including the Eld symbol. Though I didn't do it from memory, I had a reference image.

I'm pretty proud of that digital drawing, actually. >.>

Actually, that horn took me about five and a half hours, and I still think I can go back and fix some things... Which I probably should, but I've been feeling lazy/uninspired when it comes to drawings and digital work.

Thank you all, though. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Well, I couldn't find my installation disc for my printer/scanner, so I had to take a photo and upload it.

I chose red and gold because though Arthur was the White King, he was also the Pendragon, and the Pendragon's colors are such.

anyways, when I thought of the horn of Eld I saw it in my mind as above, a low-man looking in the window of a seedy looking pawn shop. If I had any skills whatsoever, or unlimited time, I might do it justice, but as it is I cannot.

IF HOWEVER, ANYONE OUT THERE WANTS TO STEAL MY IDEA AND DRAW IT BY HAND, AND DO IT JUSTICE, I would totally appreciate it.

I'm not completely happy with my results, but I lack the talent to do much better ;)

Originally I'd planned on just modeling the horn (which my extensive, well ok limited, Googling led me to believe is made of brass), and adding a lanyard of some sort. I seem to have ended up with more of the Pipe of Eld, but whateva..

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2275/2319735709_cdb440ef6b_o.png

I also never could get a strap modeled very well, so I figured I'd just export and load into another app... to bad I couldn't get the freakin materials to export correctly.. :sigh: :)

Anywho's I eventually decided it might be cool to show the battle of Jericho Hill and have Cuthbert dropping the horn as he is taken out. To bad an arrow in the eye looks really lame when rendered in 3D so I left out the arrow..

Having given all my excuses in advance, I present the death of Cuthbert and the losing of the Horn of Eld..

Thanks man. My current pipeline is a combination of Cheetah 3d (http://www.cheetah3d.com/) for the modeling of the pipe, er Horn of Eld. Then I used Bryce 6.1 (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/software/bryce/) + Daz Studio (http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/software/studio/mu3u6obrf3s7ek6amf1dj2e3j2/?&_m=d) (which is free!) to setup and render the 3D scene. Finally I used Photoshop Elements to add the blood splatter ;)

I really like the other entries, I wish I could actually draw :D

Any chance this one will get extended? I have it started and progressing but alas time is so dang limited to me. I may very well get a finished image by the 16th but it won't be the best I can do in that time.
Speaking of which what is the policy on showing WIP's?

Daghain
03-11-2008, 08:14 AM
You can show WIP's if you want, you just need to make sure you're clear that it's not your final so I know which one to use. If you don't post a new one I'll use the last one you posted.

And I will extend the contest 1 week. New ending date is March 23, 2008. :)

Thanks guys I just hope I live up to expectations. Between health issues, work and drowning in class work I have had so little time to work on anything fun like this. But I will post some sort of WIP here before todays over. I've had to really dial the scope of this one back compared to my original draft sketches. Maybe I can come back and visit this one better later along with another piece I have planned dealing with the Guns.

aurora - if your av is any indication, i'm sure even your WIP will be cool-looking!

aurora
03-11-2008, 01:54 PM
Just in case I don't get the chance to come back later tonight heres my first WIP for this.

Concept: Due to immense lack of time I have to keep this simple. The concept is simply to model the Horn, place it on a rock symbolizing a marker of Cuthbert, but only in my head, covered in Ivy. I'll throw in a Rose since the Rose is so dang important to the Dark Tower series.

Background, still working on what this should be. I had a complex scene drafted out but alas due to lack of time I will be making this ultimately simple. So I'll either just do a sunset scene with a ivy and grass covered plane or if time permits I'll include the ivy/grass covered ground fading into the scarlet fields of Can'-Ka No Rey and a DF blurred Tower in the far background and the spiraling clouds and beams radiating away from it.

NOTE: This is just a Modeler screen shot of what I have so far. All those messy round looking polys are actually the ivy leaves which will become clearer when I do a real render with the clip mapped leaf images. Trust me it looks good.

Please comments on this are most wanted. I don't really care so much about winning as I do producing something you guys will like. Meaning if you have something cool you think should be in here or I'm screwing something up please shout it out. I say this because this is just simply the way I'm used to seeing art challenges ran. I have refrained from commenting only because I was not sure how open these challenges are to helping each other out and how sensitive people are to crits (good as well as helpful).

Looks great aurora. How'd you end up doing the strap? I started to create a chain, but replicating the individual links and then getting them to react to physics was driving me crazy ;) I also just extruded a simple spline, but it was looking way to artificial (and fubar'd) so I gave up.

Yin Yang and other well-know siguls: ankh and star of David and celtic cross and crescent-and-star and chi-ro and Wheel of Life and so on; also some hierogliphics for the gardians, and "Arthur" in runes along the rim; a few roses, too, but they can't be seen at all.

Did some more work on the horn itself as well as some background model(that I won't show till later!) This is just the basic modeling if I had the time I'd use ZBrush to add the intricate details in but alas I'll have to leave that for when I shade/texture the horn later. On the mid band will be Arthur's sigul (which btw is not part of the Hoefler Decorator fonts, bummer but I still managed to get a good copy to use.) Around the top band will be other siguls all from the Hoefler fonts meaning what we see in the books.

Opps sorry I forgot someone asked about how I made the strap. I was going to create a braided strap (and still might if time permits). Till that time though I decided to use a leather strap. What I did to create it was simply create a spline curve between the 2 clasps. Next I created a beveled rectangular poly and placed it at the head of my spline curve and then rail extruded that along the spline. To finish it off I beveled the to and bottom ends off just a hair and then selected the center and smooth shifted up a few times. Then using those newly extruded sections I bent them around the clasps simply using the rotate tool. Tis the simplest method to create such a thing. Actually I can use the exact same method to create a fine chain which if I don't get to the more intricate braided chain is what I'll very may well use in the end.

If anybody ever has any question on how I do something or how you can do something PLEASE feel free to ask me any way you want, as in here, PMail, EMail whatever! I'm all about sharing what I know and helping others especially in challenges. In fact in the challenges I run I make sharing of knowledge and helping others out mandatory! So like I said please ask away!

I highly encourage you too! Have you tried working with Blender? It's free but powerful. If your not use to the big 3D apps the gui is pretty easy to get use to so I'm told. If your used to LightWave, Maya, XSI, Houdini, C4D, 3DS Max, ect then Blender is freaky weird and difficult to adjust to but other then that it will do anything you can ask for, especially when Peach is released. Plus you can easily use your Daz and other assets back and forth no problems.

I absolutely love Candice's work, it's so neat. I think it's perfect, composition-wise. I always envied those who can draw, I can do some marginally passable painting, but drawing is completely above me.

Laura's is so tangible, it kills me, you can really feel the weight! And John's is absolutely hilarious, I love it!

And, of course, what CPU and Aurora do is akin to miracle...

Thank you very much, Jean... That was done completely with a mouse, actually... There was no pencil sketch to begin with, it was freehand in photoshop. I've done far better work... Is there a section for non-DT artwork on this site at all? I'd love to share what I've done in the last year and a half.

I have tried Blender, but yeah the interface is a little weird :). I'm (obviously ) a relative beginner - mainly due to time constraints. I ended up choosing Cheetah3d because it's relatively cheap, has a "logical" interface, and has all the features a beginner like myself needs. Long, long ago I used to use a program called Imagine on the Amiga for 3D work, too bad it's not around anymore :(

I don't want to spam the thread with to much talk about 3D packages and questions about how to use them, but I certainly appreciate all your comments so far, and your work is top-notch!

Jean, that is just exactly right. I can feel the age of that relic just from looking at it.
Great work.

Just to let you know I'm still working on this when I find stray seconds here and there. This is just to give you the direction I'm taking the render style for this piece. I have to admit I have not decided if I want to take all my pieces hyper-real or not, but it works for this one. Sorry the grain is from the compression. I'll give something much better for the final.

I can't wait to see how it turns out Aurora. I'm wondering about the "Road to the Dark Tower" water mark that you have though, are you associated with Bev Vincent somehow?

No, its actually the title of a DT artwork CG blog which will cover several pieces from the Roland's trek to the DT. I have no relation to Bev wonderful book and other work. I had not noticed that I was using the same title till a but to late in the game to easily switch it.

FYI, I have managed to get grass added to the plain now plus have the sky and clouds finished but no WIP for those as of right now, maybe later though.

Heres a quick shot I did showing the grass field which I rendered for other purposes but since I had it I though I might as well update. I'm actually only an hour or so from finishing this (although many items are not shown and I have the horn textures turned off right now) but I won't have any time to sneak that hour in till this weekend.

Heres a quick look at the as yet unfinished texturing I'm doing on the horn. Last of my Midterms is in a couple hours after that I should have more then enough time to finish this (which honestly surprises me in a very happy way.)

Holy crap talk about the draw backs of 3D. I set up my last render to start last night and thanks to a nice little snow storm and a bit of wind we lost power sometime in the wee hours long enough to shut my system down. So This morning I got up started up again and knowing it was going to take a while to render took advantage of the new snow to head up and go snowshowing. I got home to find I accidentally bumped a setting WAY to high. It claimed it would be finished render sometime Tuesday. So now on render attempt three! So for anybody that thinks what I do is cool, it comes at the price of sanity! :pullhair: Happily this one will be finished in an hour and a half plus a half hour to place this part into the final comp and done (for now!)

Well, I'm not really happy with the final result but its all the time I have for it since I need to head over to family stuff. I'll come back later and finish this up better and repost it. For now this is finished as far as the challenge is concerned. Pleas don't ask me what happened to the roses. Lets just say they kinda died of neglect.
