Hey! I remember those guys! They seemed to be up there forever. I've seen some pics of this tour, and I didn't notice any acrobats, just lots of cool video. Guess I'll find out in a few days.

You'd been out of luck unless you caught word of the show ahead of time anyway since it was a sellout. There were people bummin' for tickets, especially this one girl in particular, though she did manage to con one somehow. ;)
It was an amazing show. The guys were in top form and there were no barriers in front of the stage so I was right in front of them(wish I was on Deaner's side of the stage but can't complain). I hope to catch 'em again this fall when they are out touring when the new album comes out.

So, who have you seen live? I'm talkin' about bands, comedians, anything that you've been in the live studio audience for. What were your favorites? Any funny stories? Share!

In no particular order (other than the one that I happen to remember them in):

+ Elton John
+ Billy Joel
+ A Perfect Circle
+ TOOL
+ Audioslave (twice)
+ Chris Cornell solo tour
+ Dave Matthews Band
+ Godsmack (twice)
+ 93X-Fest twice [main acts: Incubus/Audioslave]
+ 93X Nutcracker [main act: Disturbed]
+ 93X Butterball [main acts: Stonesour, Adema, Breaking Benjamin]
+ Various local concerts [best one: Illusive (many times)]
+ Tantric/Silvertide
+ Prince
+ Maroon 5
+ Queensryche/Judas Priest
+ Dream Theater
+ Eric Clapton
+ 311
+ Foo Fighters
+ 30 Seconds to Mars

Since we are also including comedians, I have witnessed the blindingly brilliant comedic stylings of Eddie Izzard. That. Show. Was. Amazing.

I've also been to the Broadway or off Broadway productions of Footloose, Annie Get Your Gun, White Christmas, Movin' Out, Big River, and The Lion King.

Top five concerts would have to be

1. A Perfect Circle
2. Audioslave (the second time)
3. Foo Fighters
4. Billy Joel
5. Cornell solo

I think there have been a couple more concerts, but I'm completely blanking on them right now.

Did you see Elton John and Billy Joel when they there together on tour? I would bet that was a great show.

Some of my favorite shows:

The Grateful Dead (seen em twice, once was Jerry Garcia's birthday and they massively jammed the whole show.)
Zappa
Genesis
Rush
Yes (Unfortunately no Rick Wakemen)
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Billy Joel (many moons ago)
Stevie Ray Vaughn
CSN
Heart
Black Sabbath (with Ozzy)
Plant and Page
The Firm
Supertramp
A surprise for me, John Mellencamp. I liked his music, but didn't realize how high energy his show was.
Moody Blues

That's all I think of.... or remember I guess......

Oh I did see The Eagles back in 1980. They were ok, but I sure wouldn't 100+ dollars to see them today, especially without Joe Walsh.

OchrisO

And...I actually saw Spinal Tap play live.

Oooo, I would die to see Elton John and Billy Joel together or seperate. Or at all. I can't believe I didn't make an effort to go see them when they were touring. I'm angry at myself for it now.

Let's see...concerts I've been to:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (14 times)
Jimmy Buffett
Bush
Veruca Salt
Pearl Jam
Barenaked Ladies
Alanis Morissette
Counting Crows (3 times)
Third-Eye Blind with Smashmouth (I was in middle school)
Rob Zombie
Slayer
Blink 182

I've also been to X-Fest 3 times which features many bands like Papa Roach, 30 Seconds to Mars, Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Crossfade, Theory of a Dead Man, Alien Ant Farm...stuff like that.

Oh, and for comedians, I've seen Dave Chapelle and Etta May.

Did you see Elton John and Billy Joel when they there together on tour? I would bet that was a great show.

Nope, separately. Elton John was my first concert, so not too shabby there, heh. Billy Joel has been one of my favorites since I was a little kid, so I HAD to go see him. That was the first and only concert I went to with my dad, it was a blast. :D

I heard he's touring again, and believe me, it's totally worth the money to see him perform. He's a lot of fun to watch up on stage.

Erin - way, way, way jealous of the Rob Zombie and BNL. I've heard they both put on fantastic stage shows, and they're two of my favorite bands. Did you throw Kraft Mac 'n' Cheese up on stage for BNL? Also, thanks for reminding me of 30StM. I went and saw them before it was widely known that jared Leto was the lead singer. It was in a very small venue, and it still wasn't halfway filled, heh. Fun show, though.

my first concert was Billy Idol and the Cult

I have also seen...
Paul Simon
Santana
Pink Floyd
Metallica
Tragically Hip
Michael Bolton (yeah, yeah, I know)
Ray Charles (yes, THE Ray Charles)
I know there's more... but there are entire years of my life that are really hazy...

I have also seen the cast of 'Whose Line is it Anyway?' when they were touring (minus Drew Carey and Wayne Brady)

I've also been to the opera and seen a few musicals.

OMG! They were both fantastic! Rob Zombie is super great. He was so engergetic, bouncing all around and drinking tons of beer.

Barnaked Ladies though was freaking incredible. They were SO much fun. At one point, they stopped singing and playing and did a choreographed dance to music with shopping carts and boxes of cereal. I had lawn seats at the outdoor ampitheatre they were playing at, so I didn't personally get to throw the mac and cheese on the stage, but a lot of people closer did. It was so cool.

And there's loads more which I'll list later.

Went to see Joe Satriani in 97 in Dublin. Unfortunately for me I went on beer as soon as I got to Dublin. Drinking for about 4 hours before meeting up with friends who I was staying with. They started to knock back the beer too when we finally met up and then on the way to the gig one of them pulled out a bottle of Jameson whiskey which the three of us finished off in about 30 minutes. Got into the venue which i thought was a miracle because of the drunken state I was in and then we went to the bar and had a couple more pints and whiskeys each. My friends then headed to the balcony where they had tickets for and I headed to the ground floor where I was suppose to be sitting. On the way I bought a tee shirt and that was the last thing I could remember when I woke up in the A&E in the Matter Hospital around 2am the following morning. I was hooked up to a heart monitor and my arms were black with bruises from where they had tried to take a blood sample. It appeared that I passed out at the gig and couldn't be brought round by the St John of Gods medics in the venue so I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The doctors knew that I'd been drinking but also thought that I'd taken drugs of some kind because they couldn't get me to respond which explained why my arms were covered in bruises. When i came round the docs asked what kind of drugs I'd taken and I told them I didn't do drugs of any kind. The told me not to worry as wouldn't tell the Gardi about it. I convinced them that I didn't do drugs so next was a barrage of questions about how much I had to drink in the last 24 hours so I told them of finishing work the previous morning (I was working nights at the time) and getting the first bus to Dublin and hitting the beer big time when arriving. So you had no sleep in the last 24 hours and started binge drinking the doc said and I replied yeah thats about it. He told me the reason why they couldn't get me to come round earlier was my body had decided just to shut down due to exhaustion and when the found me I was lying on my back beneath the seats on the ground floor with my feet sticking out from under the curtains (how I ended up there is still a mystery). The doc told me i was lucky I hadn't got sick when in that position or I could've died from asphyxiation which can happen when in a such drunken state. After a few more questions the doc told me to stay in the bed just in case but if the bed was needed later Id have to go. Got out later that morning with one of the worst hangovers I'd have ever had stated to kick in. The bus journey home was absolute torture and It took me about a week before I fully came round from the affects of what happened.

I'd forgotten that I'd seen Nirvana on the Nevermind tour. Not their biggest fan. They only played for about 1 hour 20 minutes but they had 2 support bands The Breeders and Teenage Fan Club (I think). Nirvana put on a pretty good show but for me Dave Grohl was the highlight of the night. His drumming so powerful, heavy and tight.

Heather, in a word, phenomenal. We're talking about four extraordinary musicians, and in the case of Victor Wooten and Bela, two of the best in the world on their instruments. They mix things up a bit too. Bela usually gets a little mini solo set, Victor gets a long solo to play some killer bass which almost always features his beautiful versions of amazing grace. both bela and victor also like to throw in riffs from beatles' songs at random points which is always cool. jeff coffin [the sax player] does some parts playing two saxes at once a la rashaan roland kirk [who played 3 at once]. futureman [aka Roy Wooten] plays the drumitar, a device of his own creation which plays samples triggered by a keypad on a guitar shaped box, as well as a mini drum and percussion kit. overall it's a very entertaining show which i've seen twice.

if they come near you, i highly rec checking them out.

My husband and daughter went to see Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. They really enjoyed it.

And Heather19, you are the only other one to mention TSO!!! Yay TSO!!! Awesome show.

It makes me sad to think that kids today really can't go see the shows like I did. Too darned expensive. My list was pretty long and it isn't even close to all the shows I saw. (Of course I do count the shows that I had the ticket stub for but for some strange reason don't remember the show at all..... like Head East..... and Black Sabbath with Dio..... )

I'm going to have to check them out the next time they come to my area. I've really been wanting to see them for a long time.

And Telynn, TSO does put on an amazing show. I've seen them the past 2 years, and can't wait till their tour next year. I'm just hoping next year, it's closer to christmastime. Last year it was the beginning of november, one of the first shows of the tour, and it was kinda strange to be listening to christmas music before Thanksgiving. Nonetheless, it was still a great show.

Sweet, I've always wanted to see them. I have a few live recordings from their tour with Modest Mouse. (Back in 2000 I think).
I'm also jealous that you got to see Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros.

You're only as old as you feel - somedays I feel like I am still that long haired hippie from the 60's! Then I look in the mirror and remember how old I really am! :-)

I still love to sit in the car alone and crank up the volume to some hard rock! My wife, who never really got into music at all, thinks I am nuts! Certain songs seem to teleport you back in time to the period when you first heard the specific song. Like when I hear The Cars "Just What I Needed", I am teleported to 1981 Lawrence, Kansas where I went to college (I was old for college by the way); and when I here "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog" by Three Dog Night, I am immediately transported to the kitchen at Kentucky Friend Chicken in the New york Adirondacks where I slaved as a 17 year old fry cook in 1970!

It's amazing what music can do!

The only bands I've seen that people might know about are Rilo Kiley, Murder By Death, The Blood Brothers and Bright Eyes.

For about 2 years of my life I was always travelling and going to shows put on by small local bands or somewhat popular bands within a certian music scene. Usually I'd one or two shows, average 3 bands each, every weekend. That's a lot. Mostly hardcore/metal and folk punk. Odd combination, yes. I saw Plan-It-X fest twice, and I really want to go down to Gainsville, they do a 3 day thing called "The Fest" every year.

I've always preferred the small venues run by some 22 year old kid to the huge concert halls filled with hundreds of people. It seems more personal to me. I can pay $5 to see a few bands and meet some interesting people, or I can pay a ridiculous amount to see some huge band that probably doesn't even have the orginal line up anymore. No contest.

Plan-it-X!
I wish I hadn't missed the fest before they moved from Bloomington.

I'm a big fan of Operation Cliff Clavin(too bad they have been gone for some time), Devil is Electric and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb. I never got to see any of them live, though DIE and Against Me! played a show close to where I used to live a long time ago.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Against Me! at Bonnaroo. I was rather shocked to see them in the line up this year.

Ehh... as far as what i've seen
Dave Matthews Band - several times
Sevendust - several times
Breaking Benjamin
Cheap Trick
Cake
Skynard
Screaming Cheatahs
Days of the New

Against Me! has changed so much from when I used to be really into them. They were still releasing stuff on plan-it-x back when I really started listening to them. They have a song called "What We Worked For" that is amazing. When I listen to the lyrics to that song and then think about how you can find them on compilation CDs at Wal-Mart and such, it makes me sad, but they are still a good band.

Here's the lyrics for reference:

Lost the confidence to write a song,
So I found three simple chords
And held them together with my weak voice
On an out of tune guitar
My father gave to me.

May Elvis turn in his grave
And Les Paul kiss my dirty, calloused fingers
And may the likes of this song never make
One fucking dollar,
leave it for a demo tape
To be played until it's broken,
Then remembered only for what it was.

That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell

That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell
That we gave them hell

To my friends and enemies who could of been anything,
Titans and heroes who found survival in cause and effect.
Behind counters,
Behind windows,
Striving just
To be people
With bitter ideals of justice.
Do we only need to keep working because it pays rent?
Sleeping under plastic stars glued to ceiling,
Muscles burning alcohol and nicotine
Every morning.

But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell

But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell
But we gave them hell

There's a height beyond skyscrapers,
There's a distance beyond the freeway,
More than pictures in a magazine,
More than tragedy in a rock and roll song.
It's more than actions you know are safe to make.
It's more than money could ever buy.
Are we working to live and die in american cities,
living to work and die in american cities, and dying for what we worked.

They just sort of seemed to lose that diy ethic presented in this song when they moved on to bigger label stuff. I still enjoy their stuff, but it is much different now.

I know exactly what you mean CRinVA sometimes when a song you hear on the radio can bring back memories that can put a smile on your face or sometimes make you cringe (memories of ex girlfriends especially). Sometimes it can make you sad too as every time I hear Dancing In the Moonlight by Thin Lizzy it brings back the memory of hearing the song on the radio and the DJ then dedicating to the late Phil Lynott who had just passed away earlier that day. As Lizzy were and still are my fave band it knock me for six and made me cry. But I still love the song.

I saw it in '05 when they toured. Gainesville and Tampa. Both were awesome. This Bike is A Pipebomb played, but I guess one of the members was sick and another was taking care of him, so every song they played some random member of another band would jump on stage and play. It was pretty cool. I never saw Against Me! but I met one of the guy's brother outside of a club in Gainesville. He killed a bug for me because his friend refused to on the grounds that it was a living thing. Random story of the day.

I've seen Definacnce, Ohio 4 times and they are by far my favorite live. The energy from them and the crowd is amazing. So much fun.

The Counting Crows were playing locally tonight, so I went to the show.
I really only know their various radio hits and they aren't really what I usually listen to, but it was a pretty good show. I'm glad to see they don't just play the studio versions of their songs.

The singer mentioned that a few of the songs they played hadn't been done live in several years. He had good interaction with the crowd too. Several times it was like an episode of Storytellers with him talking about what the song meant, etc.

They had to stop the show suddenly at one point because a fan up front either collapsed or was having a heart attack. Paramedics got to him and took him out after a few minutes. Seemed like he would be alright.
When the band started up again, they didn't just restart the song they had been playing. The picked up in the middle of the song, right where they had left off. Thought that was kind of funny.

I've scored tickets to Eddie Izzard's Stripped tour in May and another version of A Midsummer Night's Dream by the same guy who did the production I saw in 9th grade. However, he's turned it into a post-9/11 thing with more of a punk rock look. The first one was modernized and it was awesome, and it looks like this version is going to be just as cool as before. :D

Last night I went to the Colin Meloy show in Milwaukee (lead singer of the Decemberists). 4th row, center in the smallish Pabst Theatre.
The show was phenomonal. All acoustic and he played quite a few Decemberists songs, including 3 new tracks that they will be recording this summer for the new album.
There was a two parter, the first being a mother singing her son off to work in a mine in 1912. The second half/song is the funeral procession. Last one is called Valarie Plame. Can't wait to hear a studio version of that one.

If you have a chance to catch him on this tour, and like the Decemberists, I very strongly recommend going to one of his shows. Easily the best show I've seen in a couple of years.
He's very funny and a great story teller. The stage banter is not to be missed.

Interesting stories --

Black Label Society - Zakk Wylde always does a crazy 10 minute solo during the show. The rest of the band set up a table and smoked cigars, did whiskey shots and played poker. It was at Harpos in Detroit, so I climbed on stage and joined them. They were really awesome guys, and humoured a drunken fan

Wilco - went out with Jeff Tweedy after the show and he bought me a beer

Porcupine Tree - ran into Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson at the show -- a very cool experience.

Alice Cooper - when he was in town the year after I saw him (he came three years in a row for a local festival) I inadvertantly told him he smelt. We were downtown looking at watches in a jewlery store and some old man kept getting too close to me, I'd move a few feet over and he'd follow me, it was as if he wanted me to notice him. Finally I said "Hey buddy, f**k off, you smell". He left, I felt triumphant, and when we left the store my buddy who was waiting outside goes "did you see who you were just talking to?" and I said "yah, it was some old guy, i told him he smelt bad".....

Went to see the Dave Matthews Band this past week. They put on a great show just as always. And it was great to see Timmy back with the band. He is one amazing guitar player.

The only bad thing was that my friend rushed me out of the show so we missed the last song, as it was getting late and she wanted to try to beat the crowd out. Well it didn't make a difference, cause they blocked our parking lot and wouldn't let anyone out till the other lots were empty so we got to sit in our car for an hour and a half and were one of the last ones out. I´ve seen

Mark Knopfler (2001)
Eric Clapton (2001)
Pearl Jam (twice on 2005)
Marky Ramone (2006)
Bob Dylan (2008 )
tons of local bands

I can´t complain, but I still wish more great artists visited South America, anyway, I know I won´t die until I see Radiohead, R.E.M. and Neil Young live

I was so irritated. We should have just stayed and enjoyed the rest of the show.

Lucky! I'm missing the show this year again! We got new carpet in the house though><

Sorry about that, that's too bad. But at least you've got nice flooring!

I was wondering what show you were going to. I'd be kinda curious to see Jeff sitting in with the band. They really lucked out with getting him, although he'll never replace Leroi.

I saw them at Celebrate Brooklyn years ago. M. Doughty, from Soul Coughing, was their opening act. He was okay. They do a lot of shows in New York though. I remember a few years ago when they would play a few sets at a bar each week during the Summer.

Has anyone heard of these guys?
http://www.petercoopermusic.com/

They're playing at my local pub on Friday. My friend Steve knows them and invited them to come over and they agreed - free gig and everything
The landlord is shitting himself now though, as some guy from London phoned and asked if the pub is big enough to hold 200 people...I don't think theres that many people in our village

Since I last posted I've been to a lot of my friend's shows, two Lucky Dragons shows, one Bad Dudes show, one Laco$te show, another White Rainbow show, and am seeing HEALTH open for of Montreal tonight. This will be my second time seeing oM, and their stage show is always fucking ridiculous and awesome.

Frunobulax
11-24-2008, 02:53 PM
Holy shit!! of Montreal were fucking INSANE. Costume changes with almost every song, drummers matching strokes, covers of Franz Ferdinand and Nirvana, almost all of the new album, the best songs from HFAYTD and Sunlandic...TWO HOURS STRAIGHT OF MUSIC. Seriously one of the best shows in terms of both the musicianship and the staging. HEALTH disappointed (their album is OK, their live show is dull), however.

"Take Me Out" is compulsively fun to play on guitar. Once I learned the riff I couldn't make myself stop playing it for quite awhile.

went to farm aid in milwaukee last saturday...great time! pretty much paid for the ticket just to see neil young, but there was some good tunes from just about everyone (except kenny chesney. he sucks...i was outside smoking cigs and drinkin beer the whole time he played.) although neil and dave matthews were really good, my favorite set was a band called Band of Horses. blew me away...i've heard one of their albums, and it made me wanna take a nap. live tho...so much energy.
