"You know we always called each other goodfellas...like you'd say to a guy 'hey, you're gonna like this guy, he's a goodfella, he's one of us'. You got that? We were goodfellas, wiseguys."

nice Chris! On the Waterfront is an awesome movie!

It has a heavily quoted line in it that the average person, when they hear it, know it, but don't know it is from On the Waterfront:

"You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am."

There's a nice homage to it in Raging Bull as well. There's also a scene in Hellboy where he is on the roof with a kid and some pigeons that is an homage to On the Waterfront as well. It was a very influential movie.

Donnie Brasco

"You want me to turn around?
What are you gonna do, take a left off of the fucking bridge?!?!"

It's a good movie, but it doesnt compare to

"What the fuck is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me whats funny!!"

great scene. :D

well, i love godfather 1 and 2, and Goodfellas is amazing. But just to be different I'm gonna say A Bronx Tale. Different perspective on the whole thing, and Chaz Palmenteri (sp?) is fricken excellent. Great lesson about the working man and the made man.

The Godfather.

If I had to chose a film besides The Godfather, I would go with Tamez and say Donnie Brasco. I just love everything about that movie.

Speaking of mob movies, I just bought the Ultimate Gangsters Collection. It comes with American Gangster, Casino, Scarface and Carlito's Way.

American Gangster could have been better. Casino is top 5 to me. Scarface is overrated, but still cool. Carlito's Way is underrated.

Other great mob movies:

A Bronx Tale
Untouchables
Mean Streets
Bugsy
Goodfellas (Top 5)
The Departed (more of a cops and robbers, but I consider it mob)
Once Upon A Time In America
The Road To Perdition
Snatch (I'm considering it mob)

This is my favorite genre if you couldn't tell.

John Blaze

i'd def say Departed is a mob movie. better than Goodfellas though? i'm not prepared to make that statement. it was good, but Goodfellas was great. i don't see watching Departed againa and again, but Goodfellas, well, that I can watch anytime.

also, still servant, good call on snatch. i hadn't thought of that, but it's totally in the genre with the whole cousin avi storyline. for that matter, reservoir dogs is in bc laurence tierney and chris penn were part of an organized crime family. maybe not "mafia movies" but "mob movies" is a distinction

The Godfather 1 and 2 are pretty much the quintessential mob movies. They're the yardstick for me. And I don't split them up as seperate because the book covers material from both films. And for those of you that haven't read the Godfather I highly recommend it. Its a great read.

All of the movies mentioned are damn fine flicks...hell...I even liked Mobsters to a certain extent :D I think I just like mob flicks.

Though not a movie, I think Sopranos needs a mention in here.

Scarface/American Gangster aren't mob movies, in my opinions. Much more about drug dealing than anything else.

Don't hide Erin, it was years before I sat down and watched The Godfather series.

Coming from an Italian family, that's unheard of. It's practically a rite of passage to watch those films. It's like baptism, first communion, watch the Godfather movies.

Growing up, my dad always tried to sit me down and watch them, but I just didn't have the attention span. It wasn't until I got out of college that I really sat down and could honestly appreciate the films.

Also, I would like to add Lucky Number Slevin to my list. At first glance, it shouldn't belong anywhere near some of these other films, but I was pleasantly surprised after watching it.

For a modern day mob flick, I think it's pretty good. The movie tries a little too hard to be slick, but it's still worth a viewing if you are a fan of mob movies.

Goodfellas. The Departed getting the Oscar was an apology to Scorsese for not getting one for Goodfellas. The characters are definitely more interesting.

The Departed is still a great film. I don't know what movies it was competing with that year, but I'd be shocked if any of them were even remotely as good considering the inclination of The Academy to nominate absolute crap. I'm watching Internal Affairs 2 right now and can see why Hollywood would want to adapt it.

The story of Whitey Bulger is amazing. The only problem I had with the film was that they only seemed to gloss over him (Nicholson), probably because of the potential political reprecussions they would have faced if they had done more. But if they had delved even deeper into the Bulger family I think they would have had a truly great film.

thank you. i think it was an ok movie, but certainly not on par with Goodfellas. i understand it won awards as a make up to Scorcese for a lifetime of being overlooked, but the fan reaction i don't get. by the time i saw it, it was made out to be something it was most assuredly not. good, not great. def not scorcese's best.

It had good performances, well directed, had a great soundtrack and for those who haven't seen Infernal Affairs is was quite good and original for us. It's a great story but I can't compare versions. Do I think it deserved best picture? No, but it was a long deserved nod to Scorsese in an otherwise slow year for Oscar Calibre Movies.

No stones will be thrown from me. While I'm a big fan of Goodfellas and Casino, I don't think hes the best director ever.

The Departed just didn't live up to the hype at all. The only character I actually enjoyed was Mark Wahlberg's and it wasn't much more than a cameo.

Hands down, he was definetly my favorite character. That man talked some shit!

Yes, even feev has conceded the fact.

Okay, not really, but he REALLY should.

Anybody seen the British film Layer Cake?

It was the directorial debut for Matthew Vaughn and among the first major roles for Daniel Craig. I thought it was excellent. Certainly not the "best mob movie ever" but a very well done organized crime movie.

I'd never even heard of it. I'll have to pick up a copy eventually though. I love mob movies.

It's an entertaining two hours with some very good performances. I'd like to pick up the book it's adapted from (also of the same title). The screenplay was written by the author.

Thanks for the heads up Jayson, I'm always on the lookout for decent mob flicks :)

You're welcome.

Vaughn showed me that he learned some good things from producing Guy Ritchie's movies, and managed to make his own film that while it has elements of Guy's style is still wholly individual and not just an imitation of Guy. It's definitely not comedic like Guy's movies, but it does have some humorous elements to it.

What impressed me almost as much as Vaughn's direction is the performance of Daniel Craig. I have not seen either of the Bond films that he's done (they aren't really the kind of films I enjoy) so this was my first exposure to his acting. I thought he was quite good. Without seeing the Bond films, I can see where he'd make an excellent Bond.

In general, I think fans of organized crime films would enjoy it. It's not the Italian mafia, but British and Serbian organized crime outfits.

The story of Whitey Bulger is amazing. The only problem I had with the film was that they only seemed to gloss over him (Nicholson), probably because of the potential political repercussions they would have faced if they had done more. But if they had delved even deeper into the Bulger family I think they would have had a truly great film.

His story is interesting and all but what do you find so great about The Departed?

Maybe "great" is an exaggeration. The film (series) it's based upon, Internal Affairs, is actually more interesting to watch, but I still think it's a very good movie, and I say this as someone who thinks Matt Damon is the most obnoxious person in Hollywood next to his boyfriend, Ben Affleck. The score is also very well-done.

I still think this is the greatest mob movie though:

This is another one that I've been meaning to check out but haven't gotten around to yet. Some of my friends recommended it to me awhile back because they said it had a similar style to Lock Stock and Snatch. Is this the only film that this guy has directed or has he done others since?

As far as I know Heather it is Vaughn's only film to date. He produced Lock, Stock and Snatch, but this was his first directorial film.

Thanks Jayson. I had actually wondered if he had anything to do with those films (until I saw your previous post), because I remember arguing with my friends because they had insisted that this film was actually directed by Guy Ritchie.

Well then you win that argument. Guy had nothing whatsoever to do with this film other than that he and Matthew Vaughn are friends.

Vaughan's gonna direct the upcoming film adaptation of the comic Kick-Ass. It looks really excellent.

My vote for best mob movie would be either Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.

I noticed this is going to be on Sundance at some point this week so I set the DVR to record it. Looking forward to checking it out. I read some reviews and it seems interesting. Will let you know what I think.

This is going to be shocking, but I could not get into that film for the life of me. My friend let me borrow it and I fell asleep like three times. I did finish watching it though.

I will never abandon a movie no matter how bad it is. It's just not in my nature.

Also, Ruthful, how is Matt Damon the most obnoxious person in Hollywood? I love Matt Damon. He's my favorite actor. He always seems humble and down to earth. He has no high profile tabloid relationships. Just because he's friends with Ben Affleck, that makes him obnoxious?

Seems unfair.
