An introduction by way of shamelessly plagiarizing from Dolan's (a TDT.com member) Wikipedia entry:

Joe Hill is the pen name of Joseph Hillstrom King (born 1971), an American writer of horror and other fiction. Hill is the second child of the authors Stephen and Tabitha King. He has an older sister Naomi, and a younger brother Owen who is also a writer.

Joe Hill is the past recipient of the Ray Bradbury Fellowship. He has also received the William L. Crawford award for best new fantasy writer in 2006, the A.E. Coppard Long Fiction Prize for "Better Than Home" and the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella for "Voluntary Committal". His stories have appeared in a variety of magazines, such as Subterranean Magazine, Postscripts and The High Plains Literary Review, and in many anthologies, including The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror (ed. Stephen Jones), and The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror (ed. Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link & Gavin Grant).

His first book, 20th Century Ghosts (PS Publishing), showcases fourteen of his short stories and was the recipient of the Bram Stoker Award for Best Fiction Collection, together with the British Fantasy Award for Best Collection and Best Short Story for "Best New Horror".

His first novel, Heart-Shaped Box, became #10 on the New York Best Seller list on February 23, 2007. It was published by William Morrow/HarperCollins in February 2007 and by Victor Gollancz Ltd in March 2007.

Simultaneous to these two above cited editions, a limited edition of Joe Hill's debut novel was also released by Subterranean Press. It is perhaps a reflection of the success and fame which the future may hold for Hill to note that this limited edition sold out several months prior to publication.

This is going to be released in a trade edition soon, and I suggest picking it up. Personally, for me, I really liked this collection over his first novel The Heart Shaped Box.

I've got the start of my (what I hope to be extensive) collection with an inscribed U.S. HSB, a flatsigned U.S. HSB, and a UK slipcased, limited HSB.

I am always looking for MORE! I can't wait for 20CG to be released (again). :D

i'm trying but i can't keep the book open and back far enough away to get a pic that isn't a big blurry mess, and the batteries are too low so the flash won't work. i'll get something figured out soon though, i think i can have them here tomorrow.

Both would be cool. Honestly it is something I want - but without actually seeing it, I have no idea what I would be buying! Ha!

Is it the 1-200 or 201-500?

Ruki

of of the first 200. i can't say i'm positive, but i think it's the same as the 201-500's, just with extra stuff in the back.

and i'm still trying to get pictures, but i have to wait for someone to come over and hold it open for me and it looks like he's gonna get here pretty late.

This isn't new news, but I'm going to post some stuff here in the Joe Hill thread anyway - for posterity's sake.

On the evening of Saturday, March 10th, I got together with my friend Jerome in Berkeley at a pub called Barclay's, a place I'd never been. Lots of good beer on tap.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/Barclays-BeerBoardb.jpg

Patrick
05-23-2007, 02:47 PM
So after hitting the pub, Jerome and I went over to another part of town to attend a booksigning. We were just over an hour early, but they hadn't even set up yet.

Here I am at Cody's Books in Berkeley looking like a squirrel with a mouth of nuts, but I'm actually saying something along the lines of, "I want this poster!"

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/PosterandPatrick.jpg

Well, because Cody's wasn't too busy, we figured we had some time to kill before things started at the bookstore.

So we walked around until we found another bar, the Cafe Rouge.

Patrick
05-23-2007, 02:48 PM
We went back to Cody's after the bar. Guess who we met before his reading. :D

(I'm the one without the beard.)

Patrick
05-23-2007, 02:48 PM
We talked to him a little. He is very friendly and approachable. Then he had to an interview with the local UC Berkeley student radio station.

After he came inside, we talked to him some more and got another pic with him.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHillJeromeandmeb.jpg

Patrick
05-23-2007, 02:48 PM
We sat in the front row. Joe read from Chapter 10 of Heart Shaped Box and then did a Q&A.

Then we walked and talked with him over to the other part of the store where he was going to do the signing.

Here he is signing one of Jerome's books. Then he signed mine.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHillsigningtoJerome.jpg

Patrick
05-23-2007, 02:49 PM
Ok, so we weren't just the first ones in line. We went and put the books in the car and came back in, so we were also the last ones in line.

We sweet talked a nice lady at the bookstore into giving us their two promotional standalone posters. Joe was nice enough to sign them for us. :)

Joe and Jerome:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHillsigningposters.jpg

Afterward we walked down to the Cafe Rouge for another beer while we waited for Jerome's wife to stop by and pick him up.

Overall it was a fabulous evening. Thanks to Jerome for remembering to bring a camera.

Patrick
05-23-2007, 03:28 PM
Here's the HSB he signed for me. As a Neil Young fan, I like the quote. :)

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHill-HSB-Patrick.jpg

Patrick
05-23-2007, 03:29 PM
During the Q&A, I told Joe that I was reading 20th Century Ghosts and loved the story "Pop Art", thus the mention of his character Arthur Roth:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHill-20thCent-Patrick.jpg

Patrick
05-23-2007, 03:32 PM
Also, flat-signed HSB:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHill-HeartShaped-Flat.jpg

and flat-signed 20th Century Ghosts:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/JoeHill-20thCent-Flat.jpg

Jerome and I each bought our HSB books ahead of time to ensure getting 1st edition/1st printings (shown in the various photos above).

Side note: I bought a 1st ed./4th printing of HSB at Cody's in order to give them some business. Since the event was not jam-packed, I asked Joe to sign and inscribe that one as well. Why not. At my request, he inscribed it to a DT character. What a great guy. :D

Patrick
05-23-2007, 03:35 PM
We each got a couple of the Cody's pamphlets signed to help provide "provenance" as to the authenticity of our signed books - especially the flat signed ones. This was another of Jerome's good ideas.

Yes it is. he's lucky to have it. Besides Hill it also has Brian Keene, and the last one I saw on eBay went for almost $400. Here is a more reasonable one, but it's still nearing $100.

btw, it is a very interesting book. Each author wrote a chapter, and surprisingly it holds up real well. I thought is was a great read!

btw, here are the two earlier Postscripts Limited Hardcovers that Joe was in, and signed. 'Best New Horror' was in Postscripts 3, and 'Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead' was in Postscripts 5.

Joe Blogging.......

Hey, all. Over at joehillfiction.com I'm hosting the first ever Annual August Arcade Chalk-Off. This year's theme is 80s Arcade Games. If you have access to chalk and a driveway or a piece o' sidewalk, you too can draw a scene from one of the great stand-up arcade games from the 1980s, and compete in this year's competition.

The winner - judged by myself and infamous video game connoisseur Shane Leonard - will take home an iPod shuffle preloaded with the audiobook of my collection 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS. 2nd place through 5th place get stuff too. No, this ain't a sweepstakes. No, not everyone has an equal chance of winning. No, there's no place to send a postcard and enter without drawing a picture of anything. This is a brutal chalk pit-fight, and only the gifted and insane will triumph. It's also a ridiculous, arbitrary, bullshit contest and the winner will likely be chosen by completely absurd and unfair standards. Never-the-less, if you feel lucky, get yer game on and send us your retro-80s-video-game chalk masterpiece.

More details - like where to send a jpeg of your entry - over on the website:

http://www.joehillfiction.com/blog.htm

Thanks all. Have fun.

Best,

Joe Hill

Be very careful if you're going to buy from kickbuttbooks on ebay.
He/She has been listing signed Joe Hill items for almost a year now. There's no way all of them are real. Unless they follow Joe around to all his signings and get him to sign 10-20 copies of each story.
They used to just be signed 'Joe Hill' before it was common knowledge that Joe dates his signatures, and now kickbuttbooks dates them as well.

Incase anyone was interested... iTunes is selling 20th Century Ghosts as an audio book in seperate chapters.

Each story is 95 cents. So if you want 5 stories - $5. If you want them all - its like $14 or $15... Offer expires on Oct 29th.

I bought my favorite story...which we all know what it is! But there are quite a few good ones..

Teaser — Locke & Key by Joe Hill

November 11, 2007

http://www.subterraneanpress.com/

Next year, we’ll be releasing the limited edition of the first six issues of Joe Hill’s comic series, Locke & Key, illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, which Joe describes as “a supernatural thriller about three kids who find themselves the custodians of an unlikely New England mansion called Keyhouse. Within the house are secret doors with transformative powers, the power to fundamentally change a person’s identity. There’s one door, when a kid steps through it he’s turned into an old person. Pass through another door, and a boy will turn into a girl, while a girl will be turned into a boy. There’s another door that unlocks a closet, filled with robes: an African robe, an Asian robe. By putting the robe on, you change your race. And they find themselves pitted against a thing that calls itself Dodge, who preys on children with a weak sense of self. Dodge has a habit of turning them lethally dangerous: into Columbine style-killers, or lynch mobs. There’s a terrible door within Keyhouse that Dodge would like to force open, and which my heroes have to keep shut at all costs. Ultimately it’s a kind of modern Grimm’s fairy tale, about the way young people discover and construct their own identity.”

Our hardcover edition will be limited to only 250 numbered and 26 lettered copies, with a whole bunch of extras, and will not be reprinted to fill further demand. Look for a more complete announcement soon, with ordering info. Further down the line, after the full tale is told, and we’ve done limiteds of each miniseries, we may also release a compilation of the complete graphic novel and scripts, along the line of the recent excellent Absolute Sandman volumes.

We’ll be announcing Locke & Key first via our email newsletter, so sign up there or risk missing out on this very limited edition by one of our hottest young writers.

I actually tried to order one, but they were sold out. :( Hopefully I don't get shut out of the Limited Editions.

One thing that I'm starting to find disturbing with Joe Hill is that everything the guy has published is being put into a Limited Edition. He's only published two books, but there are about at least 8 forms of Limited Edition books by Joe Hill where one can get a signature. One more is still coming from PS and now another one by Subterranean Press.

What this reminds me of is Dean Koontz. Where everything he has published has been put into a Limited Edition format (not all, but most everything). And even though Koontz sells a million copies of every book his Limited Editions are very cheap to be had, and his signed books are even cheaper because they are everywhere. I kind of got mad about this with Heart-Shaped Box, as there was a 2 signed editions from subterranean press and a second printing, and a UK limited edition, and all these were signed. And he toured the heck out of his book to where there thousands of signed first editions. I just don't see any of these books being worth anything down the road. Heck the second printing of Heart-Shaped Box is still being sold at the publisher. The frenzy has died with this book.

Now we all know when Heart-Shaped Box came out there was a huge demand for his signatures and/or Limited Editions and they were going for absurd prices. But what I've seen since is book sellers are still trying to sell Joe Hill items at those prices and they are not selling. Camelot Books had a first day sale (Christmas annual sale) and had everything Joe Hill that you would have wanted, Lettered Heart-Shaped Box, Lettered Voluntary Committal, and everything else. The prices were all inflated, and as far as I know not one book was sold (out of about 12). The prices were too high, who wanted to pay a $1000 for a 20th Century Ghosts, a book that's only a couple of years old. jeeze.

My question is will Joe Hill's signatures and/or Limited Editions become not worth much? Will the market become too saturated with his Limited Editions and/or signatures?

Just curious, because to me it's pretty nauseating how many Limited Editions he is putting out. And I love the guy! And I know this post probably sounds negative, but that's the way I feel right now. Just slow down Joe, we don't need a Limited Edition for everything you publish.

Patrick
11-19-2007, 10:01 PM
I say this as a fan of Joe Hill and knowing that many people buy his limited editions simply because they love his writing:

I think you bring up good points, Geoff. Personally I think his first printings and limited editions sell for so much more than many other more famous authors is that a lot of speculators buy his stuff hoping he'll achieve the status (and resale value) of his father someday in the future.

Also this:

I can't wait to see pics of Ralph's Lettered edition when it arrives. :excited:

There's two ways to look at this...first, it does give fans a chance to buy a signed book. Most people aren't collectors, they just wan't something neat on the bookshelf. Second, however, the market is already flooded and will only get worse.

Joe Hill is a decent writer, but he's got no career yet, just a couple of well-recieived books. This is complete market exuberance on all his books. Obviously, the first editions will hold value, but you can't keep going to the well.

I say more power to him, if he wants to publish limiteds of all his books...but I don't see anything I'd be interested in collecting - as an investor/collector - other than signed trades I got at his personal signings (which aren't 'investments' either).

And that will NEVER happen...too many people on the bandwagon all at once, hoarding and saving. There has to be scarcity to drive up and maintain the value, and with everyone hoarding, the books will never be all that truly rare.

I missed the deadline of the lettered edition as well... Got a fairly curt email back, but I don’t care. I’m not there for the publishers, I’m there for Joe Hill.

I do totally with what gguthrie is saying. Everything is in this varied format of limited edition - but, to me, its the limited editions that will maintain value. I think that there are a lot of people (myself included) who are banking on the fact that his first couple of works of fiction are actually pretty good...so lets get on the bandwagon now before we miss it.

I would have gladly dropped $500 for the lettered...but I missed it. And I will also confess that this Locke story line is not something I am really even interested in. But I like Joe Hill, I like the way the book sounds thus far, and as a fan, I should have it. That’s how I see things...

Yeah, if I was a bigger fan, I'd be much more motivated...I'm only speaking negatively from the investing standpoint...to me, I'm content to get his signed trades, and any reasonably priced limited (I got a couple of the Postscripts, for instance), but I personally wouldn't buy any expensive lettereds.

But, for true fans, they are neat items and like Dolan basically said it's cool to be on the ground floor of someone new!

I was going to mention that also. When I missed out (apparently by minutes) I e-mailed and asked that if someone failed to pay, or if they had a PC become available that I'd be interested.
I received a response that "We don't sell PC's and we don't do waiting lists." It just came accross a bit curt as Dolan said.

In all fairness, he is quite the swinging d*ck over there. Randall, I thought about writing that SAME email, but my pride got in the way. I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction. Either an over inflated ego or he needs to take on more staff to release the work load he already has.

Either way, not cool. But like I said...it’s for Hill...

I ordered one of the S/L's that went on sale today but I am not really happy about the price (250.00). They say in the email that this has a much lower print run (250) than HSB to try to justify the price, but didn't the deluxe version of HSB have only 200 copies for like 75.00?

That's too bad Karen, I understand, this is very high priced like Oy said. I'll admit it sounds good, but it seems Joe Hill has now entered the Stephen King stratosphere and his Limiteds are now costing the same as his father. The average fan will not be able to pay these prices.

I've always said I love collecting King the most, but it's frustrating because his prices are always the highest. It now looks like Joe Hill is going to become frustrating as well to collect. :(

I have to agree, thats a little steep. I cant help but feel its only because of who his father is and not his work, dont get me wrong I like his work but I dont think it justifies that price.

One more complaint I forgot to mention about Sub Press. Although I did order a S/L, I would have been quite perturbed had they been sold out. His e-mail came out at 4:30 am West Coast time. Not very fair to those on the left coast. It just smacks me of a person who is either not too swift, or simply doesn't care-"Oh well,, I will sell these out in hours, Screw those people who don't get up at 5:00 am."

Rahfa

I'm a little surprised it sold out that quickly, at that price...like others have said, it's a bit high priced...

Yes, it seems sort of sketchy to send out an email at 7:30 est. Is Sub Press on the east coast? He probably just sent it once he got started for the day, and decided to let the chips fall as they may...

I have to admit, I'm personally sort of glad Im sitting this one out...but, I am excited for everyone here who managed to get a copy. It's definitley going to be a neat edition.

Right now we’re just focused on telling a great story in six issues. But the first storyline only scratches the surface of a much larger story, something that could run as long as 68 issues… ten six-issue stories, one eight-issue story. But even if Locke & Key is successful enough to allow for all 68 issues, I won’t write it straight-out. I’ll do one chunk, then leave it for a while, come back in a year. I see this as something I can play with off-and-on for a decade at least. This is assuming people actually want to read these stories, and IDW wants to publish them

Interesting, if this becomes reality then it could become a double edged sword. If you like comics it would be great, but if you would rather Joe write novels then he's going to be slower at putting them out. Similar to Neil Gaiman who's only written about 7 novels in 17 years.

Call me old-fashioned but I wish the new U.S. edition of 20thCG hardcover came with a dustjacket.

Even though I consider myself a fairly hardcore Joe Hill collector (simply because I just adore his work), I, too passed on the Subpress Locke & Key (both editions)- just too much cash for what it is. I'm sure it'll be gorgeous, but I'm no longer buying just to buy. I'm really weighing all factors these days, and I just couldn't justify it. I'm hoping IDW will do a nice hardcover once it's all done (they did a pretty nifty, oversize 30 Days of Night when that series was done), but I don't know what kind of exclusive deal they might have made with Subpress...

Switching gears, I've seen a jacketed 20th Century Ghosts on ebay, and I'm sure it's a book club edition, but was wondering if anyone knew which book club issued it. I'm an SFBC member, and they might have done one (I'll get back to you on that), or, perhaps, if anyone here has one. If so, what's the quality like?

Turns out the Science Fiction Book Club does offer it. In a perfect world, if the book club edition is the same trim size as the regular- I'd put the book club dj over the regular. Wa-la!

(I know, they're prob not the same size..)

Ron

11-29-2007, 10:04 AM
Even if they are the same size, there may be other differences. I know that the trade edition of King and Straub's Black House had a black binding and boards with silver lettering while the book club edition had a black binding and boards with gold lettering. Otherwise, they were identical.

John

Right, John. I guess what I'm trying to do is have the "real" edition, but with a dj from a book club edition on it. Provided it fits. Then, I'll just use the jacket-less book club edition as a beater copy- it's a good enough book to have a beater copy for travel, etc.

Just an FYI- the "20th Century" book club edition (SFBC, in my case) dust jacket does indeed fit the "real" jacketless edition. The size is the same of both editions, but the real edition is just a tad fatter (spine-wise). It looks GREAT with a dust jacket on it, and also will do what dj's a really intended to do- protect that easily-smudged book!

It has recently come to our attention that an Ebay seller is offering forged Joe Hill items for auction, including at least one bogus copy of VOLUNTARY COMMITTAL that my assistant purchased. Counsel will not allow us to name the seller at this time, but everyone might want to be wary for the moment.

The chapbook my assistant received appeared to be a poor photocopy, not even the same trim size as our edition. I couldn't tell if they merely photocopied Joe's signature or forged it, as well as the number in the book.

The book looks like it should be good, but I have a question:

Considering they want $150, why do a separate chapbook? Why not just include the story in the signed/limited hardcover that you need to buy to get the chapbook?

Just wondering what the thought process is. I'm passing on this since the story was already published in POSTSCRIPTS and I have that.

Yea, they are offering the chapbook to entice buyers, anything extra to throw in will entice a buyer.

But this is a common practice with Subterranean. They've done this with the new Poppy Z. Brite collection, Brian Lumley's A Coven of Vampires, and Charles deLint's Promises to Keep. These are ones I can think of that have been released in the past year (or six months). Also Gauntlet Press issues a chapbook with every Limited Edition they publish, if there's no chapbook then they issue a signed print.

I like it, it's a way to issue something that might not be as strong as the book itself but it's still interesting. Like in the case of Joe Hill it's an old story, whereas the other stories are all new. So it doesn't fit in a collection of new fiction, but it's nice as a bonus.

Anyway I bought the book because I love a lot of the authors: Powers, Lansdale, Brite, Carey, Resnick, etcetera. I would of bought this collection even without Joe Hill.

Hello, Jerome.

If you send a package to Joe with the return postage pre-paid, Joe will certainly sign your books. If the books are to have a specific name in the inscription be sure to include a slip of paper that says so for Joe to see.

The only thing I need to say beyond that is -- please be patient with the return of your books, as Joe will absolutely sign them, there's no guarantee that he'll be able to do so the day they arrive. I'm sure you can appreciate that -- though, he'll surely get to them as fast as he can.

Does anyone else feel (because I do) that these forgeries are really affecting the price of the VC chapbooks?

i definitely think it effects the price... because the number of buyers trusting the ebay auctions is decreased.... thus the demand has decreased...hence lower prices.
i gotta say that joe kind of invites this since he prints his signature rather than signing it (cursive)... printed text is much easier to forge. as more and more of his stuff is forged, i see only the numbered signed limited editions with actual signature pages bound in as holding/increasing in price.
i value the the items that i have personalized to me... but i plan on only buying true limited editions in the future (for my collection).
note that every "forged' book that kickbuttbooks has sold has gone to some other person who believes the sig is real. the sigs KBB have look pretty darn good... so when these second parties get ready to sell them...not knowing they are forged... many others will be buying them (we only know kissmybuttbooks are forged because of the number that he sells...not because the sig is evidently forged). so unless we got it ourselves at a signing...or it's not a signed limited edition, how are we to know what is or isn't real out there now.

all mine are real... but how could i prove that if i decided to sell them in the future? i couldn't. except for the limiteds.

i sure wish joe would decide to actually "sign" the books rather than print his name.

how are we to know what is or isn't real out there now.

I think you would have to follow the same rule as any other sig, if you know the seller or its a S/L then your good. Would you buy a SK signed book without knowing its 100% legit. As far as the market value, I think a legit sig will only increase in value due to its authenticity. IMO.

Thanks for checking in with Shane on that for us, Jerome.

On the issue of authenticating Joe's signature, I believe the best you can do (aside from buying S/Ls) is either get it yourself or buy from someone you already know and trust. For me that would mean you guys around here.

Terry brings up a good point that if you go to sell on eBay down the road, the average buyer probably won't distinguish between your book and someone else's in terms of validity. Therefore I don't see much point in collecting non-S/L Joe sigs beyond a copy or two for your own collection that you plan to keep, and whatever you need for your friends around here at TDT.com. :D

There can be some provenance established for signed items, Flyers for the event, receipt for buying the book from the venue with correct date and time, photos of each book being signed, and inscribed books, particularly those with an art doodle lend credence to a signature.

I agree. Those things can only help, no matter who the author may be.
