Looks like the last stop on the tour is tonight.

What has the attendance been like at these events so far? I think HORNS is on the best-seller list, but Joe is still not a household name so I have no idea what to expect -- mob or small gathering of fans.

I was fortunate enough to make it to the final stop on the tour last night.
Maybe 40 people were there, in truth I thought there would be more, but it was a good showing.
I'm sure everything was pretty well rehearsed at this point in the tour, but Joe still came across as a very genuine guy -- pretty funny too.
He started with a brief intro where he fondly reminisced about his visit to Pittsburgh and the Monroeville Mall. He read from the first two chapters of HORNS and then did a 15 minute Q&A before signing. I can't imagine how tired he must of been, but he was still very accommodating and signed everything I put in front of him (8 items in all) and still took a pic with me.
I got a couple of fun doodles, but just now realized I was so jazzed about meeting him, that I forgot to ask him to date everything...oh well, next time.

While he was signing for me, he mentioned that he just completed an 8,000 word short story while he was on the road. He already had a publisher lined up for it, but didn't want to say much more.
In all, a night I'll remember for a long time.

I dragged a friend of mine to the Toronto event. It was pretty cool. Mr. Hill seemed like a genuine, down to Earth kinda guy. He looked very tired too.

I didn't take my camera to the event but I did manage to get 8 books signed. We talked comics a little. He's a fan of Brubaker but has read nothing by Ellis. That broke my heart but he more than made up for it with his drawings/doodles and just being a stand up guy.

This was the first time I have had a problem with Amazon.UK, I was worried because I also had a shipment from Amazon.DE (the splitter DT comics) that the box was beat up. At least the books from Germany had some packing material to save the books. I have never seen books this badly beaten up, not quite as bad as what Lenny is saying but they both have severe creases through the book, destroyed dust jackets and torn pages.

If this thing goes over hundred bucks, I will pay for:

a) If the winner is in the U.S.:
PRIORITY Shipping with Insurance and Delivery Confirmation. Again, on my dime not yours. So you domestic bidders can figure on an additional $10 to $15 of value.

b) If the winner is not in the U.S.:
I have no idea anymore what it costs to ship from the U.S, except that at some point it got expensive as heck. I'll pay for the shipping.

Of course, this set will be shipped in a box not an envelope.

I got mine in today

However, I think Peter hired packers from WaterStones to ship the book. I'm working with Peter right now to get my case replaced as well. The case is a very soft material and is acceptable to every pressure, ding & drop.

Another word of warning to everyone that purchased the tray cased version. DO NOT pull the ribbon to get the book out. The ribbon is glued to the inside of the traycase lining only and will RIP the ribbon and lining out.

For the record, I never pull ribbons to get books out, I simply place my hand on the book and turn the tray over to let the book carefully come out. My ribbon was actually ripped out and laying in the bottom of the tray before they even shipped the book.

Peter's a great guy and I'm sure this will all be taken care of.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Overseas shipping cost for a defective traycase just sounds like throwing good money after bad.

I have not received any email about my book having shipped. Should I be concerned or does the package just show up at your door without warning?

Thanks for posting those photos, Jerome. :couple: I didn't realize that the book itself (under the dustjacket) was different than Sub. Press' trade edition.

Yeah. This is the first time my wife has ever opened a book shipment box. But I've been going on and on about how much I've been looking forward to receiving this and sharing my concerns about smashed traycase corners, etc. that she went ahead and opened it.

She told me she washed her hands before opening it and then carefully put the package all back together and away from the kids' grubby paws. It was all very cute actually.

Also my wife sent me this teaser photo from her cellphone:

Unfortunately not all PS stories are ending like Tito's.

I can get a replacement case but I have to send the case back. :arg: The Post will be $32 to send it back across the pond. After sharing with PS my disappointment of having to pay the fee to get it back to them. It was made clear, if I want a replacement, I must send the case back.

I'm almost of the opinion it's not worth sending it back. Now what I have in the book just went up $32 but if I don't send it back the value of the book just went down.

OK.....opinions anyone? Send it back and hope the value goes up to cover my cost or keep the damaged case?

Keep it...this is the exact same issue Bob went through with his Waterstone UtD...and it's nothing but a bunch of aggravating hoops to jump through.

Yes, the book's worth a little less - probably about $32 less. So I bet it's a wash. I would not go through the hassle...but I would probably send them a final email expressing your aggravation and desire that they learn how to pack.

In PS's defense, they probably want the case back so they can get some reimbursement from their shipping company...but who knows. Sounds kind of pointless to me, so I'd like to think there's a legit reason.

demorgan

I would send it back...and also ask for some type of compensation for the extra bullshit...and i would post it on Joe's site to make sure that he and everyone there was aware of this extra hurdle that people over in the states has to go through because of PS mistake...thats what i would do. Man, If my case is messed up...i would stir some shit up because it isnt your fault that the case is messed up...its partially theirs because of the materials used to pack the book...you didnt pay $280 for chance that you would get a book without dints...u paid for a undamaged book. I think thats bullshit.

I wouldn't crucify a publisher without giving the chance to answer first. I'm pretty sure PS Publishing is taking a propper care of the shippings now that two complains (at least that's how many we do know about. There might be more) have been received.

At this moment, The news is that PS is making people pay to ship the traycase back...I hope that PS does something other than make people pay more for a book that they rightfully deserve undamaged...Until news comes around that they are doing something to rectify the problem..then it stands as is.

as of right now, PS response is to make people send the traycase back.

which for people in the US costs $32....if it was $5-10, I doubt that it would be a problem.

I do hope that PS will present a solution to this problem that will satisfy their US customers that recieved damage goods.

I know shipping from the US to the Uk is expensive, but an empty traycase should not cost $32 to ship. Perhaps $20.
Have you confirmed the cost?
A 3lb. package sent First Class would be $24.52. If you can pack it at 2lbs it's $17.64.
Still money, but less than $32.

I've seen the s/l slipcased Gunpowder going for 150-200 bucks, and I think that is way to high for just a chapbook. Curt, your collection must be growing exponentially! You clearly got 'the bug' :) Personally, I would first make an inventory of the books I want to purchase, then take some time to investigate what the market values are (using eBays 'completed listings' option, The Collector's website, and asking for advice here before buying). I would also try to get a feel for how often a certain book comes up for sale. This will all help you decide whether or not to bid, and how much your max bid should be. Also, save yourself the trouble of bidding manually - use a sniping tool.

... just my two cents... :)

Bottom line: using a sniping tool increases the chance of you obtaining an item for a good price (no getting caught up in bidding wars) - simply decide what the max amount is that you wish to pay and you're always good (either because you win an item for a good price, or because you didn't win but didn't overpay either).

And of course, you don't need to sit at your computer and wait. This is a huge plus for me, as I live in Europe and get most of my stuff from the US - US listings often end way after midnight in my timezone.

I use Auctionsniper; they charge you a small amount for each item you win but in my case (because I don't buy the really high-end stuff) it's usually no more than a couple of $ every few months. Check out www.auctionsniper.com.

Curt, I was bidding on that auction as well. It is a book that I would very much like to add to my collection. I don't recall my top bid but I bowed out somewhere around $325 or so. With the proliferation of other Joe Hill signed (limited and trade) editions out there, this book is too high priced in my opinion. While the limitation number is low which drives up price, I'm guessing that a lot of copies are held by speculators rather than fans (not that those are mutually exclusive) who are looking for a huge payout.

Purely from the perspective of a Joe Hill fan though, I'm still jealous! :P

Well would you look at that... that's EXACTLY what it is! And I totally forgot about it! Gosh I'm only 28 and my mind is gone!

I know that this is not related to the topic, but what was the issue price for "The New Dead"?

Thanks,
Eric

250 numbered copies @ $110 each. Here is the link to the site: http://goo.gl/UWTb

Thanks. I had already visited the site and was just wondering how much over the issue price I paid for mine. I bought the one on ebay for $165.00 so I am happy with what I paid.
Back in mid-June 2009, Sub. Press offered it at presale for $100, as discussed back then in this thread. However the official price printed on the inside flap is $125. I would be happy with your $165 buy price.

Patrick - could we add this to the limited editions post on the first page of this thread?

Good point. I edited and added it. I used the $125 price on the flap, what do you think?

*humm thought I replied to this.

Yes! The issue price is worth listing. I actually got my copy today. The address was off by 1 number and there was a bit of a debacle but I figured it out. #163.

Also - can someone tell me about this "Grave Tales?" Those are the only 2 in my Joe Hill collection that I am missing (and a lettered Voluntary Committal) but I seem to know nothing about them. Anyone have photos?

Check this link (http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/CTGY/COMICS), Issues #6 and #7 feature Joe Hill.

Issue #6 has been released in paper form.
Issue #7 has not yet been released ("forthcoming").

I do not know whether either hardcover signed limited edition has been released.

the "Special Bound" horns is a regular Trade HC with a sig sheet tipped in. There are 1180 copies sold as 118 cartons of 10 books.

Should this be added to the list at the beginning of the thread? Although it technically isn't a s/l edition, it is limited somewhat and different from a regular flatsigned first edition.

Hummm... that's a very good question. I don't know how I feel about it but it does say "special bound" edition so perhaps it does belong on the list. I say yes.

The ISBN and DJ are the same though. Would that cause a problem listing it as a separate edition? I think that it should probably be listed.

I don't think that should matter. It's another edition and now that I think about it, it should be listed just to make other collectors aware that it's out there.

I'm just missing the 1st/1st Salem's lot (thought I got a signed BCE which is cool!) and it looks like I'm still missing the Rage 1st/1st and then I have a complete set of 1st/1st...at least I think I do. Lots of cool limited stuff and pretty much all of Joe Hills stuff too.

sigh..I hate to admit it, but I also now have signed with comments, Locke and Key 1 and 2 in HB form with the flyer from event where Joe signed them and also one of the "keys" #6/500 with the pouch and signature card. I mean...it was another whole day and I hadn't added more expenses to my credit card yet.

Oh...and David..I will mail the check for the Salem's Lot prints tomorrow. Can't wait to add those to my Centipede Press Salem's lot....woot!

Fine by me!

Curt -

I agree with Patrick about being patient. I myself have only been collecting for about 6 months. I have a list of books (based on all of the wonderful reading to be found here in the Corner) that I would like to acquire, and I've been getting them one at a time. I look at closed auctions and various online retailers to see what the price range is. I've had to let some books go for now since I can't afford to buy everything at once (my wife and kids have to come first). But I'm sure my opportunity for those missed books will come around again. Slow and steady wins the race. Besides, if I buy them all now, I won't have anything to look forward to. Just my two cents.

Update on Head Games from SubPress - looks like it may be coming soon!

Joe Hill, fresh off the exhausing tour for his dark enthralling new novel Horns, just lobbed a large stack of signature pages onto the stoop at SubPress's offices.

Next week we'll be giving Locke & Key: Head Games one final pass to make sure the script and graphic novel are both as we want them, and then it's off to the printer for this oversize volume.

I have been trying to figure out why these did not sell out. I guess because its comic book related but who knows :orely: I have the first book, Lovecraft, and I love the added section of Joe's manuscript for the comic. It could be that the Joe Hill market is getting a little oversaturated and yeah... still just a comic. Oversized, signed, slipcased.. whatever. For that price of the trade edition from SubPres you can buy first two L&K hardcovers from IDW and a hardcover of Horns.

But, exactly right. This isn't Amazon, who ships normal trade books where the condition doesn't really matter...this company's entire point in existing is for the collectors. OVERVIEW: The best stories pull readers in and keep them turning the pages, eager to discover more—to find the answer to the question: "And then what happened?" The true hallmark of great literature is great imagination, and as Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio prove with this outstanding collection, when it comes to great fiction, all genres are equal.

Stories is a groundbreaking anthology that reinvigorates, expands, and redefines the limits of imaginative fiction and affords some of the best writers in the world—from Peter Straub and Chuck Palahniuk to Roddy Doyle and Diana Wynne Jones, Stewart O'Nan and Joyce Carol Oates to Walter Mosley and Jodi Picoult—the opportunity to work together, defend their craft, and realign misconceptions. Gaiman, a literary magician whose acclaimed work defies easy categorization and transcends all boundaries, and "master anthologist" (Booklist) Sarrantonio personally invited, read, and selected all the stories in this collection, and their standard for this "new literature of the imagination" is high. "We wanted to read stories that used a lightning-flash of magic as a way of showing us something we have already seen a thousand times as if we have never seen it at all."

Joe Hill boldly aligns theme and form in his disturbing tale of a man's descent into evil in "Devil on the Staircase." In "Catch and Release," Lawrence Block tells of a seasoned fisherman with a talent for catching a bite of another sort. Carolyn Parkhurst adds a dark twist to sibling rivalry in "Unwell." Joanne Harris weaves a tale of ancient gods in modern New York in "Wildfire in Manhattan." Vengeance is the heart of Richard Adams's "The Knife." Jeffery Deaver introduces a dedicated psychologist whose mission in life is to save people in "The Therapist." A chilling punishment befitting an unspeakable crime is at the dark heart of Neil Gaiman's novelette "The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains."

As it transforms your view of the world, this brilliant and visionary volume—sure to become a classic—will ignite a new appreciation for the limitless realm of exceptional fiction.

Jodi Picoult, Richard Adams and Diana Wynne Jones are not able to sign this edition, however it is signed by the rest of the author's featured.

As cool as this book sounds, and as much as I love Joe's work, from my wallet's standpoint, he is getting very expensive to collect. Every time he releases one short story in an anthology, there is a new s/l edition of it. Along with Stories this year there was The New Dead and the soon to be released Very Best of Best New Horror (which has an old story). I wonder if the market is getting a little saturated. And from what others have mentioned to me, anthologies usually don't hold their values like single signed editions. But, I know, true collectors buy everything...

There's no IF about it...the limited publishers saw that they had a golden goose and are trying to get every penny from it that they can. I mean, I can't blame them, but it absolutely is saturating the market.

We've used the comic book comparison before - in the 1980s, when collectors started buying and bagging every copy of every book, it wiped out the colllector's market in the long term, because there was never a supply/demand issue...because mostly collectors buy these expensive s/l editions, and sell to other collectors, it's the same thing. They aren't rare, just expensive.

And...not to get all totally negative...I read "Horns," wasn't that impressed...I think he's a great short story writer, but not as good a novelist...I wonder if we're buying the sizzle, not a steak...

But - I don't collect Hill, beyond signed trade editions I can actually get in person...so I'm not speaking from an invested standpoint...
