... I also was very depressed when I saw the email for $250. When I see these types of sales when the book hasn't even been released, I always wonder about the author. What do they think when prices of their books are marked up on release? Do they get mad that a store is taking advantage of his or her fans?

I just posed that question to Joe via his website - will be interesting to see his reply if/when he posts it!

ETA: Here's a link to the thread Joe Hill Gunpowder (http://joehillfiction.com/?p=367#comments)

Overlook obviously buys lots of other, non-Joe Hill books from PS Publishing and I'm sure gets the right to buy 10 or so copies of Gunpowder as thanks for keeping them in business with all the other books people are not willing to pay $250 for.

The indy publisher is kept in business by the indy bookseller, so yeah, Overlook makes a high profit on this book, but they will also be buying and selling other books where the profit margin is much smaller.

The customer service is a whole other issue...I've never bought from them...but they have a relationship with PS that helps both parties.

I'm not doubting Overlook's right to sell the book - just curious, as others, at to what the author's take on it is, that's all.

I actually added to it over on Joe site. I have a feeling he might not want to reply to this one without offending Overlook. As Overlook does promote a lot of Joe's works. Who know, though.

I just know Brian Keene was angry at Bad Moon Books for marking up his new chapbook on release. BMB was selling the book for $38 (he had 25 copies), and the release price was $15. In fact BMB started selling the book before it was even released from the publisher. In this case Brian Keene doesn't like BMB so he took offense. Whereas Joe has no problems with Overlook as far as I know, so I was curious as if he also took offense, or not?

btw, thanks for the Joe Hill post Gretchen!

I don't mean to take away thunder from Mike, but I also received the books from his signing, and I already have pictures. I bought all three, even though the only first was Lock & Key, because they were personalized. Heart-Shaped Box was an older signed copy from an earlier signing in May, and it just added "For Geoff". this wasn't very exciting, but I really like the 20th century Ghosts and Welcome to Lovecraft personalizations.

Also, we've just received the very lavish hardcovers of Joe Hill's Thumbprint, and expect to offer those for sale early next week.

Mmm. Last May Subterranean announced their latest collection:

"Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy is headed to the printer in the next week. Don’t forget, those who order a copy of the trade edition direct from SubPress will also receive a special chapbook by Joe Hill, Thumbprint."

Though from the latest email it sounds like they'll be going on general sale also.

There's an update on the PS Publishing website concerning Gunpowder:

Today PS will be taking delivery of Joe Hill’s Gunpowder, Terry Bisson’s Planet of Mystery, the latest winter chapbook for Postscripts subscribers (Ramsey Campbell’s The Long Way), the paperback edition of Postscripts #17, and the special three-book gift set of Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree, The October Country and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

We aim to get as many copies as we can out to customers before Christmas hits us but, particularly with a proposed strike in the offing by Royal Mail, I’m doubtful that we’ll manage more than those customers who live in the UK. But let’s see how we get on.

There's also an image of the cover:

This just in from SubPress:

Joe Hill's Thumbprint is not only a killer tale about the horrors from Iraq one young solider brings home with her, it's also possibly the nicest lettered chapbook we've ever done. The image at right, showing the chapbook, but not the traycase, really doesn't do the production justice.

Each of the 52 copies was handbound, housed in a custom traycase, is signed by Joe Hill, and cost nearly $300 per copy to produce. We're offering copies -- one per customer -- for $400 + shipping.

If you're interested in a copy, please drop us an email at subpress@gmail.com and let us know if you'd like to pay via credit card or PayPal, and we'll make the necessary arrangements.

We don't expect copies to last much beyond today, if that long, so please drop us an email if you're interested.

Are you asking about Gunpowder? if so it was I think 54 pounds which converted to I think 99.00 US for the 1/200 signed by Joe Hill and Vincent Chong with slipcase.

If you meant Thumbprint I think there was just the chapbook included with "Tales of Dark Fantasy" and the lettered that sold out.

Not sure if anyone has caught wind of this yet, but theres a discussion going on over at Horror Mall with some displeased people in regards to Subterranean Press' forthcoming S/L of Locke and Key.

Apparently they are now releasing a 1000 copy trade edition, after selling out the $250 S/L saying the limitation would not be increased.....

(Congrats, Pasiuk!)

Can you refresh my memory on the L&K S/L? I'm out of the loop on that one.

EDIT: Found these announcements on the publisher's website.

Our hardcover edition will be limited to only 250 numbered and 26 lettered copies, with a whole bunch of extras, and will not be reprinted to fill further demand. Look for a more complete announcement soon, with ordering info. Further down the line, after the full tale is told, and we’ve done limiteds of each miniseries, we may also release a compilation of the complete graphic novel and scripts, along the line of the recent excellent Absolute Sandman volumes.

Here’s the exclusive Vincent Chong dust jacket for our special edition of Locke & Key, Joe Hill’s hit comic series. Our edition — sold out the day it was announced in our newsletter — includes not only the comic proper, but also the 250 pages worth of Joe’s script that artist Gabriel Rodriguez had to work from, as well as endsheets created especially by Gabriel for our edition.

As we announced quite a while ago, there will be an unsigned trade edition of his Locke & Key limited edition, done Absolute Sandman style. To save a ton on our printing bill, we’ll be printing the trade edition at the same time as the limited, but sitting on them until the fall. There will be some significant differences in the editions — the trade won’t be signed by Joe, of course, or have the dust jacket and endpapers exclusive to the limited edition. The first printing of the trade edition will be limited to only 1000 copies. We’ll likely announce it later this spring when the limited edition is shipping.

Yep, basically the Trade Edition wasn't going to be published until the Locke & Series was completed, and then they were going to release a set of them like the Absolute Sandman's (which each have 20 issues, btw). I guess Bill got itchy and decided to make some more money now, and issuing the first arc as a trade. That's going to be a lot more expensive if they do the books per arc rather than doing say 20 issues at a time.

For Joe Hill's completists?

The first issue of the next Locke & Key storyline will be out in early January, but you can read the opening 7 pages right now in the latest issue of Wizard magazine (that would be the January ‘09 issue, but nevermind the date, it’s already in stores). This is a particularly cool issue, since it has an Alan Moore interview, a preview of the upcoming League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and a long piece about Lost writers Brian Vaughan and Damon Lindelof. And, tho’ I blush to write it, in Wizard’s annual best-of issue (December), they were kind enough to vote me Best Horror Writer.

Cemetery Dance was also using that tray case design for several of their lettereds for a while. MIDNIGHT MASS by F. Paul Wilson comes immediately to mind but there were several others. Ray Garton's lettered editions of NIGHT LIFE and 'NIDS by Sub Press also have that traycase. I thought it was neat the first time I saw it and then it seemed like every other lettered book I received had the same design. I stopped liking it after a while.

Agreed with the last 2. HSB was a good book, I did enjoy reading it. But 20th Century Ghost gave me chills at the end of damned near every story, and getting chills at all is rare for me. Even the ones that weren't "scary" left a lasting impression.

That is what I think too. Getting a comic graded "10" by CGC is next to impossible.

I collect comics from the 1940's and 1950's with Carl Barks artwork (Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, Walt Disney's Comics & Stories, etc.). I tend to stay away from CGC graded books. I like to take mine out and read them from time to time, even the ones that are VF and higher. If you are careful there is no problem. The encased (or slabbed) CGC graded comics can't be read which, to me, is the reason for collecting them.

Patrick
03-01-2009, 12:12 PM
Turtlex is very knowledgeable about current comics and is a collector of CGC-graded comics, so I look forward to her thoughts on this.

My understanding is that the L&K comic books are generally receiving higher grades from CGC than you typically see. That is credited to the production values (higher quality paper, etc.) of IDW - much higher than you normally see in standard comic books. All that said, a 10 is a 10 and remains a coveted grade for the collectors who care about those things.

Hey All -

Just a couple of things...

Joe Hill's Locke & Key comics are really high grade, and it's not unusual to see them graded 9.9 or even 10. I've seen more than a few.

As a matter of fact, the 9.9's are getting rather common. It must be high grade covers from IDW.

Honestly, I've never seen a group of comics graded so high, so consistently. A quick look at eBay right now find a lot of them.

There's even one graded 10 with a BIN of around 200 /or make a Best Offer : http://cgi.ebay.com/CGC-10-0-Joe-Hills-Locke-Key-4-1st-Print-Kings-Son_W0QQitemZ220366291703QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Def aultDomain_0?hash=item220366291703&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Here's one for a BIN of $180. http://cgi.ebay.com/Locke-Key-4-Joe-Hill-CGC-10-0-Gem-Mint_W0QQitemZ120308189803QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_0?hash=item120308189803&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

I suspect, since it's not so unusual, that the prices will likely come down.

I think that "the word" is out among those who send in books for grading and then for sale, where as they know they have a real good chance of a 9.9 or a 10, so more and more people are getting them graded.

If I were looking to invest in Locke & Key, I'd be focusing on trying to get Signature Series Graded issues.

I'll take some time and look at the grading numbers and post some info.

Also - I'm about to file away my Wizard Magazine which has the Joe Hill interview in it... if anyone would like me to make them a copy and mail it - just PM me your address ( you international folks, too, no problem ).

And I agree with the last 3, lol

I liked Heart-Shaped Box, but I was blown away by 20th Century Ghosts. The collection is what sealed it for me on being a Joe Hill fan.

Also of note, if you like comics Locke & Key is just a great original comic. I've been very impressed with it.

Yes, totally agree, really loving the shorts to day (i.e. 20th Century Ghosts, etc), liked Heart Shaped.. alot and have yet to start Gunpowder. Started Locke & Key and liked the first two issues... am waiting for the limited Subterranean Press editon to enjoy fully.

This is the latest news posted yesterday on the SubPress site:

In other Hill news, we’ve approved the printed-but-not-yet-bound pages for the Locke & Key limited and trade editions, and should see finished copies in the next two weeks. When we do, we’ll get right on having the slipcases for the limited edition made, and be ready to ship the unsigned trade edition this fall, as previously announced. (We’ll have the latter up for preorder soon.)

I don't think anyone knows what the Sub Press edition is going to be. Now we do know the $250 Limited Edition will be signed, and have extra material like story scripts and sketches, something like 70 pages worth (I think? I can't remember), and it will be nicely bound. But Sub Press now has a trade edition coming out in the fall, and I don't think we know if it'll have the extra material or will it be the same as the IDW edition with a different binding?

btw, the IDW edition is just the comics combined into one book. The comics didn't have anything extra, so the Amazon link contains everything that was released in the original comics, which is just the storyline.

News on the SubPress website about the S/L of Locke & Key, plus info on the second arc:

Joe Hill — HEAD GAMES is Coming to Subterranean

We’re mighty pleased to announce that we’ve just finished negotiating the rights to Locke & Key: Head Games, the second graphic novel in Joe Hill’s seriously horrific (and good) comic book series.

We’ll have more details down the line, but you can expect a very limited edition (276 copies) published roughly nine months ahead of a 1000 copy trade edition the same way we’re handling Welcome to Lovecraft, the first miniseries in Locke & Key.

Speaking of Welcome to Lovecraft, the books have long been done. We’re waiting now on the slipcases, which are expected to land in our offices in the next 3-4 weeks. The trade edition has already been printed as well, and we’ll have it up for preorder soon.

Interesting. I thought the presentation for a hardbound book that not only had the entire first arc, as well as the original "script" from Joe Hill was awesome.
I also noted (and should have mentioned earlier) that the book "smelled good". It really smells like a new book-hard to quantify, but it made my day.

Jerome, I like the idea... and its interesting to think if Joe gave the artist the text (on the normal pages) and then went to drawing the actual comic on the color pages. Its an interesting process.

That said, I am not really a comic fan and I find it hard to read Joe's comic (I just don't have the imagination for it)...

Yea, that is a very nice book, and very tempting.

The sad thing for this story is, I forgot what it was about a day later. I usually write up a review for myself, as a reference and I couldn't remember how it ended. I keep on telling myself I'll read it again, and write my thoughts down immediately after reading, but I have never done so. To me the story was very forgettable. *shrug*

Well my bid was $5 too low. Sad about it but I had that feeling of - Good for whoever won it... I think that $325 is a bit much for it. But I thought my bid of $320 was a bit over as well... but that's the name of the game!

Well I am fucking furious... AT MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!

So i bid $450 on the lettered Thumbprint. I also had a bid-snipe set at $620 which was as high as I was going to go.

Well I also had a snipe set for the VC chap book which went through at $320 but i lost it at $325. Fine. I deleted that snipe since it went through and I didn't win.

So I hit refresh with 1 second left of Thumbprint and it says "Outbid at $455!" And I am like... WHAT THE FUCK?!!?

Well - I deserve a swift kick in my ass because I deleted the Thumbprint snipe. Not the VC snipe. So I deleted the active snipe not the inactive one.

And I was willing to pay $200 more than the higher bigger.

Talk about FURIOUS with myself. DAMNIT.

Looks like I got a bit lucky! I had a snipe in also on the Thumbprint......
I wanted the VC also but you outbid me on that one.....

But damn me! I am such a dumb ass!!!!

Just so I have some mental comfort (if that even exists) but was your snipe below $620?

Yeah, it's like when you have shows saved on Tivo and you watch one, then go to delete it, but delete the next episode by mistake...haha...maybe not quite the same thing.

Anyway, that's the fun of ebay - winning when somebody else messes up...good job Pasiuk! haha...

Dolan,
Not bragging or rubbing it in, OK?? I have been in your spot before and was furious at myself for similar reasons. The final number can be misleading.
I won the Voluntary Committal, but rest assured you did NOT miss by $5.00, my max bid was considerably higher as this was the one Hill Lettered I did not have. Call me foolish but I think this one is worth alot more (I just hardly ever see one at auction) - especially since it's an early one and there's only 26.
...and you would all call me foolish if ya knew what my max bid was:orely:

I'll keep an eye out for another one for ya, ---kyle.

Hey...I wouldn't cry a tear for Kenny...and if he's crying, whatta shame, he might have to wipe it off with his Obama-signed Dreams of My Father...Haha...we've all been on both sides of ebay battles so he'll be fine...:P

I cannot understand people using "snipe". Just put in your highest bid and that's the end of it. No-one who was using a snipe has ever beaten me on a bid.

Kenny
to tell the truth, your bid would have won. I was over $455 but under $620.
Not sure if it helps but....

A snipe has a lot less to do with winning the auction than trying to get it for the lowest price.

If you snipe something at the last second, nobody has time to big against you - meaning, win or lose, the final price will go up. Obviously, the snipe is your best possible bid.

If you put in a high bid long before the auction ends, it's true that you don't have to worry about it anymore, but all the last minute bidders will drive up the price on you.

Hey Dolan, sorry to hear that you didn't get the Thumbprint. I had thought we were in a recession. The three s/l went for alot more than I had expected. Congrats to everybody that got what they wanted.

Very much agree with you on that one, but $320 was the max i would have paid for VC. But the lettered VC is much rarer.

I really did want the Thumbprint - but ahhh, you WIN some, and you LOSE some... right? No tears - but i was pretty pissed at myself.

And Rahfa's theory on sniping bids are exactly why I use snipe.

If I understand correctly, the snipe basically bids at the last second, leaving no time for even the automatic eBay bids to get in before the auction ends.

I guess its not so much winning, but winning at a lower price.

EDIT: I've never bothered with them myself, if I want something, I want it, and am not too concerned about price.

So I like to think I am highly familiar with the Joe King collectibles world but I know nothing about this "The Saved" chapbook.

I have seen that there is a signed paperback at 200 copies and an unsigned hardcover at 500 copies.

Is this correct?

Nerak

I have one of the hardcovers...

And Kenny thanks!

I didn't kiss her..but I will go back to her for other tats!

That sounds about right...

There seem to be a fair few pc copies floating around also. I have a couple of the unsigned ones.... But no signed ones .... Yet.

Dolan

So the 500 hardcover are unsigned right?

Interesting that the paperback would get signed and not the hardcover.
