mine arrived today - in same mailer in a box - no extra padding though - but it was perfect. My sticker came off easily too. All of my locke and key books are signed on the front end boards. Also I was pleasantly surprised - since I asked if it could be inscribed to both me and my son:
to Chad & Caleb
Let's Ride…

I'm about 3/4 through Horns and I'm not sure if I like it or not. If it was another author I probably would have stopped after the whole God vs Devil vs Woman is more like God stuff. It's very uneven and immature(?). There's a lot going on some of it childish theories about God and the universe as well as mature explorations into friendships and love. Sometimes it plays like a bad cable tv movie and sometimes it reads like a great comic.
Very odd compared to the straight forward Nosforatu and the dark comedy of HSB.

I wasn't sure about it when I first picked it up. It wasn't because of the writing, for me, which I thought was great. I just didn't like any of the characters, and found everyone to be annoying and/or despicable.
After about halfway through, I was utterly obsessed and completely in love with it.

I liked it as well. The casting and changes to Lee were kind of weak. the rest of casting was very good.
The ending was weak too. I they should have done something with fire, but maybe they didn't have the budget.
But other that it was great.

I made a donation to the Read for Pixels Pixel Project a few weeks back and in return Joe Hill was to send a 75 word hand-written story on a postcard. This is what was waiting for me in my inbox this morning:

Hi Jim
Joe Hill just emailed us with a message for you:

Right, I wrote Jim's story today, and it came out really well. It's 200 words, however, not 75, and I'll probably need to put it in a letter, not a postcard. Will you check with Jim and make sure that's agreeable?

Could you let us know if you're okay with this?

Uh, yeah, i'd say it's agreeable.

I just recently started reading Joe Hill. I bought Heart Shaped Box and Horns in September, and I already read Heart Shaped Box (LOVED IT!!!) and I'm reading Horns now. I'm half way through it, and really enjoying it. I'll be getting 20th Century Ghost and NOS4A2 next week.

I highly recommend the Locke & Key Series!

I'll definitely add those to my "to get" list. Thanks. I just finished Horns, and it's a wonderful book.

I think it is. This is the Deluxe slipcased 1 of 200 version signed by Hill and Chong. It had an issue price of £49.99. So this is basically issue price if you get it for $75. The last one sold on eBay went for $118.

What you can get for it.

Is it one of the limiteds or flatsigned?

David at Bett's has a lettered edition with Chong jacket sketch for $150. (If it's still available.)

The PC one in this listing is the 1 of 200 slipcased version that has both Hill and Chong signatures.

There is also a 1 of 300 version that was signed only by Joe Hill. That one usually goes for about $100. PC a little less.

I would estimate a flatsigned first at $50.

Does he write his stuff in longhand? That pic would seem to suggest that (though I suppose it's possible he had his typewritten pages bound, but those look like just standard journals). Interesting -- as involved as he is social media, I would've assumed he wrote his fiction on the computer.

EDIT: Never mind...visited the provided link and got my answer...sounds like he alternates between the two, though, yes, primarily longhand:

THE FIREMAN notebooks. Though a few hundred pages were written directly on the computer; some of the beginning, some of the end.

Finished my 2nd draft earlier today. That feels good.

UPDATE: Warren Ellis shot me a note asking what sort of notebooks I’m using. I tried out a few different ones in the course of writing the novel. In the end, the best of them (far and away) was the Leuchtturm1917 Master, hardcover, ruled.

Famously so, he is a big advocate of writing the first draft in longhand. He frequently touches upon it when publicly speaking or when asked through his twitter/tumblr.

An excerpt from a recent interview :

What’s next for you?
HILL: I’m editing the first volume of The Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy, for Houghton Mifflin. That will be out next year.
And I finished a new novel called The Fireman. I actually finished the book two weeks ago, and I’m really happy with it. It’s long. It’s about 1,000 pages in manuscript. It’s Game of Thrones size. Hopefully, I’ll trim it back a bit, but I’m pretty happy with it. I’m happier than I usually am with my first drafts. Most of my first drafts are god awful messes, and this one is in pretty good shape, so that’s nice. Those are the next two things that are coming along in the pipeline. And I’m working on a book of novellas.

Not picking a fight, just indulging my curiosity and doing a bit of research in my own collection. It appears that Joe's current signature uses the "Loopy H", and his older stuff is a more traditional H. I just heard from Bill Schafer at Sub Press that they will not be continuing the Lock & Key signed limited series. While it wasn't highly popular it is disappointing to have an incomplete set that will never be completed. IDW Publishing is planning on continuing the leather bound special editions one each summer. Next summer will be Keys to the Kingdom.

I'm guessing that's because they still have over 40 copies of book 3 (I got mine when they had a 50% off sale over the summer). It is ashame that it won't be concluded - they were nice books. I never started with the idw books - too many damn limitations, etc. now I guess my set will be incomplete - unless I finish it off with the IDW books - which might be an option. Too bad he didn't just cut the number of books in half and go with 125 - although not sure if that would have been cost effective.

Hold up, I watch a lot of movies that aren't Hollywood big budget. Horns was really good for a film that no one cares about. I thought that it stuck with the book for the most part. I also thought that the director and crew gave some great style and imagery to the story. The acting was perfectly fine. There's plenty of films to stay clear of, this is not one of them.

I would put this on par with the 2013 Carrie remake, which I also liked a lot.

Re: HORNS: I haven't seen the movie- probably because I liked the book so much; hearing that the movie isn't very good makes it a pretty easy decision to just leave the great story in my head, unscathed. It is disheartening to me, however, that folks will probably not read what is really a unique Fantasy/Murder Mystery after seeing the inferior film. That's a bummer.

Anyone in the market for a complete 1st Edition release set with matching # keys?

Not an expert on this, aren't all the keys signed? How many are there and what's something like this generally worth? Thanks and feel free to PM if you like.

Horns limited - depends on whether you're after the 1/500 or the 1/200. 1/200 is going to run $350 - $500 or so. 1/500 probably a bit cheaper.

PS officially announced the 10th Anniversary edition of 20th Century Ghosts in today's newsletter.

The editions:

a regular unsigned edition in a plain slipcase containing ALL stories in both of the two original PS editions plus specially commissioned artwork from the multiple award-winning Vinny Chong (1,000 copies priced at £25);
a special numbered slipcased edition signed by Joe and including additional artwork from Vinny and a new photograph of the author on the slipcase (100 copies priced at £75); and
an oversized traycased lettered edition (just 26 copies, A to Z) signed by Joe, Vinny, Chris Golden (who penned the original Intro) and Ramsey Campbell (who will be adapting his review of the book written at the time of its original publication) plus a special DVD containing short movies of two of the featured stories, namely ‘Abraham’s Boys’ and ‘Pop Art’ directed by Dorothy Street and Amanda Boyle respectively (26 copies priced at £350).

the "Special Bound" horns is a regular Trade HC with a sig sheet tipped in. There are 1180 copies sold as 118 cartons of 10 books.

So I recently got a NOS4A2 that has the tipped in page that reads "This Signed First Edition Of" exactly like what was discussed with this version of horns. Does anyone know the number of books done this way? It looks like there was 1180 of the Horns but I could not find info on NOS4A2. I will post photos later today.

So what do you guys think the top of the heap Incarnations of collectible Locke & Key are?

With so many publishings/repackagings/variants of the work, it is hard to even figure out what you want.

You have the Sub Press Lettered/ S/N LE/ and Unsigned HC but they only got through 3 Books in the series and discontinued! Sure puts a damper on the price tag of a Hefty Lettered edition don't you think?

Then IDW has a number of "fancy Editions" Leatherbound... Limited HC... Oversized Traycased HC in a box with additions, ARRGH it's hard to even know what is out there.

I have a

Unsigned Trade of Welcome to Lovecraft
A S/N LE of Head Games
and no copy yet of Crown of Shadows

What are some of the better options for premium editions of the last three books?

Dan
05-24-2015, 10:57 AM
Of course I was upset about the cancellation by Sub Press. I think it lost any retail the three might have had. IDW will still be releasing the leather bound deluxe editions. I plan on sticking with those. He told me one per year, so the fourth should be ready this summer.

So I picked up this book on eBay. I am returning it because it is a 5th printing but I also believe the signature is fake but would like verification here. It is a 5th printing and is dated March of 2007. The book came out in Feb of 2007 so a 5th printing in March less than 4 weeks later seems pretty unlikely right?

Joe may have just screwed up the date, and put '07 instead of '08...it takes me a while, too, to adjust to the new year when writing checks, etc.

I'd say that's more likely than a forgery...the sig looks good to me, and, besides, given Hill's generous nature with his sigs, his signature isn't going to add much value to a trade HC, anyhow, let alone a 5th printing, so I can't imagine anyone bothering.

Johnny Alien
05-29-2015, 10:54 AM
Faked signatures of his were happening all over eBay a few years back. The seller here just listed first edition and I assumed first pressing because of the date on the signature. So I think perhaps someone might have just faked a signature on whatever hc printing they picked up. I contacted him to return it based on the 5th printing issue and then remembered why I had assumed it was a first printing.

Johnny Alien
05-29-2015, 05:46 PM
Is there any chance that the 07 is actually an 09 that blurred together with the sharpie? I told the seller that I am pretty sure it's not authentic but I also don't want to be deceitful with what I am telling him.

Well this one does include the entire wraith graphic novel...although it's going to be a very large, zombie killing book at nearly 900 pages. Initially I though it was only a limited of the wraith comic - but the subpress listing seems to imply the original novel is included as well.

I already have 2 signed copies of wraith (different covers of the book) and one of those is inscribed - so really on the fence about this one.

Does anyone have any idea how an IDW book will hold up over time? Not sure how many large (page wise) books they've produced, since they're mainly in the comic/graphic novel business. Their artist/artifact edition books are very nice (I have 3) - but they are the same cost, no slipcase, and on,y maybe 200 pages. I think because of sheer size of this book - it'll be tough to even open it to fully enjoy the wraith story and art. The wraith HC books are nearly the same size (dimensions) as the subpress nos4a2

I was confused on that point as well (whether the NOS4A2 portion was the text novel or a new graphic-novel interpretation), so clarified the issue with Bill. As per his response, NOS4A2 is the text novel:

It's the novel proper plus the graphic novel Wraith.

The only new material is the 26 illustrations.

Since I already have the Sub Press S/L in slipcase, and have little interest in comics/graphic novels, I'm passing on this one.

I actually purchased a signed copy of Heart-Shaped Box from a brick and mortar Barnes and Noble back in 2008, and it was a 5th printing with a Joe Hill signature dated 3/5/07. They had multiple copies on the shelf.

wow could be a 5th printing. Still notice the e and the J compared to the other signature.

Just confirmed with Bill that the new edition won't have the Wraith novella or alternate ending.

Crazy. I wonder how that works out? It doesn't seem like a 5th printing would have happened by march of 07.

I love the appeal of the novel and graphic novel in one. I'm tapped out, though. But I'll pick up one down the road.

I don't collect Joe's stuff (yet) and so was all excited when I saw the email from SP. Then I started to read that this isn't the first S/L of this book, and so started to wonder why there is another, and if it is worth picking it up as my intro to Hill collecting??

So, the original Sub Press S/L has NOS4A2 and Wraith (written form), so I'm not biting. I will save my money for his next original novel. :)

I also skip and think that they will get cheaper in the secondary market. 999 copies / 150$ is more than enough for the market i guess...

My OCD doesn't allow me not to order, so I did and requested the same number as the first s/l.
It'll will be interesting to see the secondary market listings and confusion over which s/l it is that's being sold.

The main difference is that this one has the 'Wraith' miniseries with the novel. The original S/L had some bonus content (an extra novella and alternate ending) that's not here.

It looks like a pretty nice book so you could do worse. I don't know how much value it will have in the long run, though, if you're planning on reselling later.

I wouldn't be too worried about resell value, I buy with the intent of keeping and enjoying the books. Sounds as though a few here think they may be cheaper on the seconday market down the road however. Maybe I might see about picking one up if they are a little cheaper.
Thanks for the clarification re the differences.

I asked for a specific number to match my Sub Press NOS4A2 and was told they will try, but since it's another publishers book they can't guarantee. I understand this, but IDW does not sell this direct so buying from another retailer is the only option. So I guess some people will get there numbers and others won't. I'm thinking maybe I should have just waited until secondary market if I'm just getting a random number.

Not a slam against Sub Press, all retailers will have this problem, just a frustration.

Turns out that Bett's also has a 2007 signed, 5th printing copy of Heart-Shaped Box for sale. So apparently it's totally possible but it still seems odd.

I have UK 1sts of Horns and 20th Century Ghosts for sale (unsigned...and highly desirable since Joe didn't scribble in these! LOL!) and a copy of the Slipcased Gunpowder from PS signed by Joe and V.Chong. I would prefer PP gift and to ship only in the US. If interesested please send me an offer via PM. Pictures available upon request. Thanks.

EDIT: Gunpowder is sold.

Still very awesome that it'll be free for the first month - I'll definitely be getting a copy. I enjoy some of Neil Gaiman's work where they've used a full cast for the audible version - like never where.

From a recent interview (http://www.writersbone.com/interviewsarchive/2015/7/6/pouring-gasoline-on-the-fire-with-horror-author-joe-hill): I’ve got a new novel, a dark modern fantasy called The Fireman, which will be out in the summer of 2016. It’s about a plague of spontaneous combustion; it’s my version of The Stand, soaked in gasoline and set on fire.

way back when - they said it should be announced by the end of May - I assumed that was May 2015 - but now I could be wrong. Nothing has been mentioned in any of their friday newsletters - no hints, no nothing. Maybe this will be the week?
