I have never read a Joe Hill.... is he a good writer? Or is he collected more so because of King? Thanks for your input guys!

IMO he's a great writer. I checked him out because he was King's son but I wouldn't have kept reading his stuff if he wasn't good.

It's funny that Joe Hill considers himself first a comic book writer.

I think he is an extremely entertaining writer. Nos4R2 was one of the best books I've read in a long long time.
I tried HSB and thought it was excellent but Locke and Key is what made me forget that he was a King and just enjoy the stories.

I haven't read everything he's written. I have liked everything I've read. He can be very disturbing when he wants.

He is a very good writer and a likable guy.

His books are undoubtedly more collectible because of his relationship to his father, if for no other reason than that more people are aware of him.

I would be a fan regardless.

Concerning Locke & Key Alpha #2...

I must have missed something here. How did he get Bode a new body?

Good question. No clue.
Alpha and Omega should have never been split up and delayed so much. The extra covers are neat-o but the story suffered.

Wraith:
Manx doesn't need to be raped in the mouth to be evil. Kind of lame.

CyberGhostface

Wraith:

I usually don't have a problem giving villains traumatic backstories but the whole bit with Manx's childhood wasn't included in the Wraith novella, and it still did a good job fleshing out his motivations and character. So yeah IMO that was unnecessary.

I'm considering letting go of my collection of Joe's "early" works but have no idea where the prices are.
Does anyone have any clue?
I've collected him from the start, so I have all the editions of 20th Century and HSB (limited and lettered) along with the lettereds of Volluntary Comittal/Pop Art/Thumbprint.
I really haven't been following them but also know they don't come up often, could be hard to judge.
Thanks so much!

On eBay at least the Sub press version of Heart-Shaped Box is being sold from anywhere from $125 to $700. Likewise with the limited for 20th Century Ghosts. So you could probably get good prices for your collection.

Just received the special deluxe slipcase of the final issue of Locke & Key today - the one with the 7 different regular covers. Pretty nice size - still in shrink wrap right now - so no pictures to share. I will try and get them up shortly (been very busy lately). I have an extra set if anyone is interested - $50 plus shipping.

Cool, I enjoyed the book. I didn't enjoy it $750, though. I will probably go in for a S/L. I'm not sure if even dad's signature would have justified $750, much less his brothers.

There wasn't when I ordered mine. Although your best bet is to get the first 5 off of ebay - someone is usually selling a HC set - that is how I got mine - all 5 for around $70. A lot cheaper than buying them new from amazon or the like. Although there are not any right now…except one that has each book signed (I got mine before his last book signing and got them all signed then)

The slipcases for George R. R. Martin's A Clash of Kings are due to ship to us at the end of this month. Once they're in hand, we'll slot the title in our shipping schedule as quickly as possible.
The slipcases for Joe Hill's NOS4A2 should be on the same freight truck as the cases for A Clash of Kings. We may have a few extra slipcases for NOS4A2 left after shipping the initial wave, which we'll post to the site as soon as we know for sure.

I own a copy of the book and will take a timestamped picture if necessary, it's just difficult for me to take out a fairly heavy and rare book to read such a lengthy passage more than once. Books are for reading, not for just fetishistic viewing...I'm as particular about my books as the next guy (probably more so), but I think it's important to not lose perspective on what books are meant to be. Just read it carefully and you (and the book) will be just fine. I have the S/L w/ the extra novella, and, trust me, it's well worth cracking open the boards (carefully) to read it.

I know the weather has been bad back East and we are finally getting much needed rain (for past 3 days) here in NorCal. That is great and all - except when you come home and the USPS has left a package on my front deck (fortunately I have a chair there that is raised and slightly away from the elements). I had two boxes today - and the big one was pretty soaked - from cheap graphics. Fortunately the only thing cheap was their name - the packing was great - tons of newspaper completely surrounding the books (which were in plastic wrap or a plastic bag) - so nothing was damaged. Cannot wait to read this this weekend:

and the packing of the slipcase from publisher was great as well: they had a full insert - not just a cardboard cutout so the book could shift in transit:

I like the art but I would have personally preferred the title with the art being embossed (like the traycase design). I'm still happy that there's a slipcase regardless though.

I just finished Horns last night.
I was pretty reluctant to read it, considering I tried to read 20th Century Ghosts sometime last year and just couldn't get into it. Honestly, 60 or so pages into Horns, I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it. It was a little dark in the beginning, and a bit uncomfortable to read. (Hell, I wasn't sure I even liked Ig. )
I'm really glad I didn't give up, because I loved it. It evolved into such a complex and well written story. Hill really is a phenomenal writer.

Update from SP:

The custom slipcases for Joe Hill's BIG dark fantasy novel, NOS4A2, are in our warehouse and have reached the top of the to-ship pile.

Thanks to everyone who picked up this extra for one of our favorite recent books. It'll take us a few days to get everyone's cases out the door, so please be patient.

We ordered a number of extras, figuring some wouldn't meet our quality standards. If they do, we'll have some extra copies for sale in a week or two.

from SP:
We've just finished shipping the NOS4A2 slipcases, and find that we overordered by about thirty copies. Feel free to pick one up.

A reminder: these fit the SubPress limited edition, NOT the trade hardcover of NOS4A2.

Consider this a nifty segue:

We're now shipping the NOS4A2 Lettered Edition, and have three copies remaining. It's one per customer, and these are likely to go very quickly.

I just finished NOS4A2 and I really enjoyed it. Noticed a couple things that have probably been posted here but I've been avoiding reading anything about the book so as to avoid ruining it for me. The number of Wraiths changed, total and in the US. Also, the morgue security guards girlfriend, who was said to be a fan of serial killers didn't know John Wayne Stacy last name is actually Gacy. Could have been an intentional error, but I think this character, although very minor as far as the story goes, should know the actual name. Not really big things but I feel they should have been caught by the multiple editors.

I thought the Novella Wraith in the sub press edition was actually better than the book itself. It was more serious in tone and very creepy whereas i think the feel of NOS4A2 was a little too over the top ridiculous. I was not a big fan of it overall. Loved Horns and Heart Shaped Box.

It changes from 400 total and less then 100 in the US, to 500 in the US. I think the number is mentioned two or three times, so not a big deal and doesn't effect continuity.

Just noticed this in an email today from Borderlands book in SF - in regards to Borderlands upcoming series 2 little book series:

Do you remember Borderlands Press' wonderful Little Books series? They've just announced a second series of Little Books, and according to the announcement, they "are contracting with 15 popular writers to do Little Books Series II, and currently have the following writers on board: David J. Schow, Ed Gorman, Jack Ketchum, Dennis Etchison, Rick Hautala, David Morrell, Ray Garton, Ed Lee, Karl Wagner, Chet Williamson, Laird Barron, Poppy Z. Brite, and Joe Hill. (several more writers to follow). All volumes in the series will be signed and numbered and limited to 500 copies.

Notice Joe Hill is mentioned - although I cannot find this anywhere else (nor on borderlands website) - and so far this is the longest list of authors I have found for the upcoming 15 books. Also Rick Hautala is mentioned - so I presume there will be at least one unsigned book in the series unless his wife might be signing.

If Hill and Morrell are doing books, I might just sign up for the whole series. They don't take up much space.

They are $30 each - so $450 for the entire set (although I think you can only pay for each book as they come out). You can order the set through CD or Camelot and they will send the same number when they come out

Too bad - looks like a complete set sold recently - pretty darn cheap: ($21/book)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LITTLE-BOOKS-SET-15-Vol-Sgnd-Borderlands-Press-Peter-Straub-Neil-Gaiman-etc-/331240446387?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item4d1f7819b3&nma=true&si=TLIwpChuQW8uHqVZIx0T7uIHXKE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Also if you are thinking of getting the whole series - make sure to ask for their little slip cases - IMHO it is needed for the little set - makes them look very nice:

Is anyone attending Comic-con in San diego? IDW is releasing a variant cover Wraith HC book at the event. So of course that led me to search for the book itself - I have yet to read the comic version of wraith in the 7 individual comics - just patiently waiting for it to be released in one issue. Well here it is from amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Wraith-Joe-Hill/dp/1613778988/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405169232&sr=8-1&keywords=joe+hill+wraith

due out in August - so I guess i can skip the the comic-con $40 version (unless of course someone here is going and I can paypal them gift for the book - since there were two others that I would like to buy as well - only available at that damn event…)

Fortunately they will be available elsewhere - no info on if any will be signed - Riverrun books doesn't know yet. Plus over half the stuff at SDCC winds up on ebay (sorry guess that brings the whole sell for profit argument back..)

Buying SDCC stuff at the con and then reselling to others shouldn't be controversial. Paying a mark-up is cheaper than a trip to San Diego for most of us.

I've heard mixed things. One reviewer of the TIFF screening called it a "tonal mess". I'm hoping that they've recut some of the film since the TIFF release to make it more cohesive.

It's a comic:

It is not necessary to have read NOS4A2 to enjoy or understand WRAITH, and vice versa. The novel tells one story; the comic tells another. That said, I think fans of one will find a lot to like in the other.

I ordered one. The girl that I spoke with first ordered me one from the warehouse, even after asking several times that it was signed. She finally told me that whatever they have on the shelf is what they sent. She placed me on hold for a while and came back and said they actually have a different procedure for the signed orders. So, if you call make sure that you are getting on the list for the copies signed when Joe Hill visits the store.

I am sure that now that they are getting calls there might be some confusion on their part. The person I spoke with specifically said that they would ship next week after the signing - but I asked first if they knew that Joe Hill would be their signing - the guy I spoke with did know this - so that made my transaction smooth (for now until the book arrives :)).

I think that I might have been able to get some of the comic con exclusives - but I will have to wait until they arrive to post pics. One was of the locke and key portfolio (from wonder con) - with all 14 prints individually signed by rodriguez - then I asked the guy if he had any of the ida sdcc 2014 comic con books - he actually had them (only 1 copy each - the covers, wraith, and a few others - like the hellboy artist edition) and I bought the portfolio on ebay and he sent an invoice for the others - since he had not posted them yet on ebay - so I had to go sight unseen for these - so I will have to wait until they arrive.

Did anyone go to the signing tonight?

Just got back. I went with my two daughters. He showed up for a signing, but when he arrived, B&N had set things up for a reading. Joe understandably did not have anything prepared, so instead he did a 50 minute Q&A. He was very entertaining, gracious, and funny. He would sign whatever you had, only three at a time, then you and to go the back of the line to get the next three signed. I am sad to say there were only 40 or so people there in person. Of course that meant more of Joe for the rest of us. He was very patient with posing for photos. I was so glad I went - when I left (I was the last one in line, for second time) he had begun signing all the stock that B&N had. I got Joe to sign two copies of WRAITH, both with doodles (I would sell one if someone wants one - PM me), and I got him to add some doodles to my signed limited editions. I will post some, including a photo with Joe and my daughters, in the coming days

I heard a rumor that SK was supposed to show, but I guess that didn't happen, did it?

No SK, and I brought a couple of books just in case. Grrrrr!

Slipcases for NOS4A2 were sold out. So as much as I wanted the book, it would have been naked without the case.

I have an extra slipcase if anyone needs one. PM me

I was there, too, and had a lot of fun. I have seen Stephen King speak a few times in the last couple of years, and I though it was funny how similar they are in their mannersisms, speech patterns, and false modesty. (Much like King will pretend to be surprised that people have heard of some his past books, Joe described himself as a "child actor" who appeared in Creepshow.) I wish I had brought some of my Locke and Key books with me to get signed. I had to take a train to Framingham (actually Ashland because, despite what the MBTA website claims, parking in Framingham is impossible) from work, so I didn't want to lug around a bunch of books in my backpack all day. Overall, the trip cost me $4 for parking plus $18.50 (!!) for a round-trip ticket between Ashland and Boston plus $30 for Wraith. However, it was worth it. I just wish I had had the foresight to go to Chipotle beforehand so I could have awkwardly watched him eat a burrito.

I just called up and ordered two copies. $30 each with free delivery since I am a B&N member. The clerk said she still had quite a few copies. They also have signed later editions and paperback edition Heart Shaped Box, Nos4a2 and others. Joe signed their entire stock.

edit: I just received my email receipt and they gave me a 10% discount. :nana:

Sounds like a great evening. Saw him twice this past year - both events were great (and a similar showing - maybe slightly more). He was very entertaining. Glad you both got a bunch of books signed.

I don't want to cause you any concern, but I will say that I had to dig through books to find two copies of WRAITH that did not have dented corners. Hopefully the stock you are getting was put aside beforehand.

I'm not sure. I had called in advance, but they wouldn't take my card info until this morning. Fingers crossed.

I was extremely polite and mentioned that I am a collector. I am hoping that got through to her and that she is sending me pristine copies.

B&N must know I am a member/collector as they called me today to let me know they had an extra available and could sent Wraith my way.

Got my signed copy of Wraith from BN. Started reading it and at first it was a bit high schoolish but 100 pages later it was getting pretty good.

Got mine in a padded envelope wraped in air pillows inside of a big box. Is that how they always ship stuff? Cause they really packed this one book good.

Got mine yesterday as well. Same packing, and no, they don't usually pack books so good....

arrived safe and sound! they must have held some back. no problems except he signed on the inside cover instead of by his name on the title page. :)

not complaining, just saying, weird place to sign. B&N should of known better!

My copies arrived too. Packaged the same way. They are beautiful copies. No bumps.

Joe signed each one on the front end paper with a Sharpie. I prefer the title page.

The store put a sticker on the front of each book. That's really my only complaint.

Glad to hear that you did not get any bumps. I saw them putting the stickers on that night - kills me!
