Btw Patrick - unless Im looking in all the wrong places they havent been cheap and plentiful thus far.

Congrats, John.

So, at "2,393 copies in print," do you all think we can assume the second state proof/ARE will be cheap and plentiful, especially after the trade edition is released?

jon10g

I agree. I've been looking as well with no success. Also on the lookout for Double Feature by Owen King.

Patrick

Part of the attraction is the ability to read and/or own the book early. I think that after the trade edition is released, the second state ARE's will be easier to find. That's what has happened with his other books thus far.

I agree with Rahfa. That was nuts. I bet that little card helped drive up the price.

I still think the second state ones will drop drastically in price after the trade edition is released. IMO, anyone who plans to sell ought to do so now while the market is hot.

Good luck with your sale, Jerome!

Kind of just the opposite, according to his "handlers" HOrns had more to think about, consequences, etc... NOS4A2 is a good old fashioned horror story in line with Heart Shaped Box. I was told if you liked HSB you will like this, by the publishers. When i talked to the lady, i told her i loved horns and cant finish reading NOS4A2 even though i loved the first 300 pages, it lost my interest after that.... She stated that HSB and NOs4a2 will appeal to the same fans.

Although I haven't read the book yet, and I was/am indeed just harping on this guy's art in The Shining thread- this looks pretty good to me. At least for this book- which, again, I have not read. Still not sure if this is the right guy for The Shining- but I've gotta say, that this piece looks a lot better than the comic book work I've seen..

I just noticed what I would consider to be a fuck up in the illustration
Charles Talent Manx the child abductor is wearing a hat. Nowhere in the novel does he wear a hat. In fact his aging/reverse aging bald pate is mentioned often. He looks like a chauffeur in the picture.

It may be a an excellent representation of NOS4A2 - without having read the book cant comment on that - but my opinion is that this style is not fitting for the Shining and this cover art does not make me want to drop everything and read NOS4A2. For me it screams comic / cartoon, not keep you awake at night horror.
Just my very humble opinion, Crowness.

If the book says that it's not for sale (especially pre-publication), that's probably the reason. It doesn't bother me personally that they're being sold but either eBay didn't like the practice or the publisher finally caught on. I really don't know. Maybe the seller can get a direct answer from eBay.

I don't know about how it works now, but it used to cost a good bit of money to have your book included in The Vine program, so in the early days publishers just used it to promote books they were already advertising heavily. A mid-list book with a $5000 advertising budget wouldn't be offered to the program because that would be the entire budget (or more!).

Brian

Rahfa
01-18-2013, 12:59 PM
The rumor is that it's $3500 to include a title in Vine - so I assume it's books with a big ad budget, or books that the publishers believe in and are willigng to spend some $$ to give an extra boost too.

I've read some really good books that I never would have otherwise...def. a great program to be a part of.

Halfway through NOS4A2....meh....I was hoping for supernatural with a taste of serial killer...I got serial killer with a taste of supernatural. It's well-written, but much too long. It doesn't have the epic scope that I expect from a 700-page book. But those who like the creepy villains will like the book.

Typically, I give this type of thing away, but hurting for "hobby funds." With several new SK books coming out, not to mention the car-sized "A memory of Light", I need some cash to make purchases. If anyone is interested, please shoot me an PM with an offer.

just saw on overlook website that you can pre-order the wraith - that is the comic prequel to nos4a2 - they will ship each of the 5 comics out once available. this will do until idw releases the HC version

i have no idea - since I did not collect the individual comics - but it looks like IDW has created their own limited series - there are a few other of their comics in this category. They have created a premium of limited editions - but they do not list how "limited" the Locke and Key comics are (they do list print runs for some of the other comics). I do not own a copy of Locke & Key - guide to the keys - is this a worthwhile one-shot to add? It seems like this too is added in their limited collection.

That is exactly the reason I don't collect comics anymore, even SK or JH ones. When I was buying comics as a teanager in the early 90s, only once in a great while did a comic have more than one version.

Nowadays, every single comic has 18 covers based various printings, variants, or even what shape the inkers poo was that morning. It's a frustrating practice, and why I wait for a hard cover. i tried collecting the original couple series of the Gunslinger comics but called it quites after the 2nd one I think. 6 actual comics with 97 different cover variations. 100% agree. I remember the good old days of going to the comic shop on Wednesday to pick up that week's comics. Each month, one book in the series came out. Now, between the regular edition, the 5 additional covers, the retailer incentive covers, the special covers by companies like Dynamic Forces and Jetpack Comics (for Locke and Key), etc., it is just too much. I want comics for the story/art, not for 15 different covers.

+1

I still buy variants* once in a while but never by Joe Hill because what's the point? He'll just do another after that will be somehow even more "exclusive" or "definitive." I mean, EVERYTHING he does has at least some kind of limited edition. There are 3 editions of each L&K edition from SubPress alone, then the regular hardcover and TPB from IDW and then also the oversized edition from IDW. That's 6 editions of one graphic novel.

* stuff like Batman, Animal Man, Swamp Thing aka the books who have a variant at the start of a new storyline, not everything ever.

thegunslinger41

Yep, totally agree with you guys. All these variant covers just water down the "exclusivity" and rarity of that special #1 issue. Capitalism. Lets just sell more shit, and pretty much make it all relatively worthless. Which is why I too miss the good old days, when there was just one version of a comic book. You either had it...or you didn't. I think all this crap started with SPIDERMAN #1 (McFarlane series)

Guess I'm one of the few boardies that collects the JH comics including all variants :)
This particular issue is the retailer incentive (1:10) of the so called Legacy Edition of #1 of the first arc in the Locke & Key series called Welcome to Lovecraft. It's one of the issues that's not offered on the secondary market too often. However, IMHO $ 50.00 is a bit too much, I got my copy for $ 20.00 about a year ago. Just send me a PM if you need more info on where you may be able to get one.

nope--no difference-ALL I can find is the proof without a sticker and the proof with the sticker.
The very first one came from the first one and that is doodled and signed to MIKE and is 776 pages vs 686 pages in the other two proofs.
The oldest one has smooth edges where the other two are "rough" pages.

Im also half way thru and just havent been able to pick it back up for at least a week now - maybe two. Love what he did with the protagonist's character - shes awesome. But the villain is just too comic book for my taste.

I am trying to track down some hard-to-find Joe Hill stories: "The Lady Rests," "The Collaborators," and "The Saved." And, also, the original version of "Thumbprint" (the e-book version has at least one major difference in the form of a changed character name; I'm curious to see if anything else was changed.) Anybody got scans of those they'd be wiling to share with me? (I'd also ask about "Gunpowder," but I figure the odds of that are slim, slim, slim. Doesn't mean I can't passively hint at it, though...)

By the way, in case queries like that are not permitted here, somebody please tell me so -- in which case I apologize for being gauche!

A couple of minutes ago I finished reading NOS4A2.

I wasn't a big fan of 20th century ghosts, just liked Heart-shaped box, enjoyed a lot more Horns, but this one I LOVED. I couldn't find anything I didn't like and it has one of the most sinister scenes I read.

And you even get a wink to Stephen King's IT. :)

PRAIRIE LIGHTS BOOKS
123 S Linn ST Iowa City Public Library Iowa City, IA 52240

So, I am thinking about heading up from Kansas City for this one (4.5 hour drive). I've never been to any of these, and wanted to make sure he was doing signings? Also, will he sign more than one book. I know one would be NOS4A2 that I would purchase from the bookstore I assume, but wondered if I was able to bring something else for him to sign too, if possible.

I am not sure if I can truly make it, but would be nice to know ahead of time what to expect, etc...

He twitted a few days ago that he'll sign whatever you put in front of him as long as he wrote it.

Also, I thought this was funny:

I can't remember if I've asked this before on here or not. I've never been to any kind of book tour or signing event. I'm assuming Joe signs on all these events? Do we have to purchase at least NOS4A2 from the place he is at, or do I need to bring my own copy? I know from what I've read earlier, I can bring other stuff, but just trying to make sure I am at least somewhat aware of what is going on:) Thanks!

Joe Hill himself probably wouldn't mind if you just brought a copy from wherever, but I'm sure the store itself is counting on selling books to people attending the signing. I say that with no actual knowledge of what Joe Hill prefers.

Check with the venue. For a JH signing I would be surprised if it was required to buy a book there-but why not? If the book is $10 more than Costco or Amazon that is a courtesy to the place that hosted Joe Hill (and you) and the price of the signature, inscription, doodle and most importantly the personal experience of the reading and interacting with the author.
I may have brought true 1st editions with me (just in case), but I always bought/buy a couple books from the store. I like the sales receipt:)

Dan
03-19-2013, 02:20 PM
Joe addresses this issue in his blog. He will sign pretty much whatever you bring, but encourages you to purchase from the store he is signing. He basically says that stores will continue doing this if it is worth while to them. If only you crowd their store but don't buy anything, no big deal. But if everyone had the same thought, store loses out. So it's more of a moral/ethical question.

dyetye

Well...his dad's third published novel was The Shining, which is awfully good, so I don't know that I'd say Hill's writing is light years ahead. But Hill is the real deal, no doubt about that.

Is it just me or is that 100% better than the Sub Press cover?

So is this cover going to be a real cover? And for what press?

I've got a ticket for the Liverpool evening. Same day as Manchester I think.

DOCTOR SLEEP & NOS4A2 may be a bit related... as the True Knot is mentionned on page 511 of NOSA42, saying that they are similar to Charlie Manx.
Maybe Charlie Manx will be mentioned in DOCTOR SLEEP, or they will be crossing his path? That would be cool !

I'm planning a two day trip to the UK in order to attend both the Manchester and Liverpool events. Still working on the details (flight, hotel and transportation from Manchester to Liverpool). If everything works out, it'd be nice to meet some fellow Joe Hill fans

I'm still not 100% sure I'm going, but will be up for meeting for a beer if I am!
