From Joe Hill's twitter account :

Scheduled pub date on NOS4A2 is April 30, 2013. Hardcover. Will be a full book tour. Simultaneous pub in UK, Canada.

Yes, UK tour for NOS4A2 as well, I believe (NOS4R2 over there). Will be giving away advance-advance copies at NEIBA on Thursday

Another tidbit from Joe's Twitter feed, from October 1st (may have been posted and/or discussed before):

There are plans for a NOS4A2 limited, which’ll include color plates, an alternate ending & a novella that won't be in the regular hardcover. Not sure I can give details about date, price, or who the publisher on that would be, koffkoff @subpress koff excuse, something in my throat.

Yes, sorry. The Locke & Key is on presale at Link (http://subterraneanpress.com/store/product_detail/locke_key_crown_of_shadows)

I emailed a few months ago asking about preorder of NOS4A2. Was told that customers that preorder Locke & Key 3 S/L will be notified before the general public. It does not reserve a copy, so to speak.

I'm confused why the Locke and Key limiteds are so expensive. They're signed and have scripts? Are the scripts like a screenplay? 250 seems like a lot when you can get a hardback trade signed for like $25.

When does the next series come out? I am pumped for that!

The s/l has a custom dj done by Vincent chong. Its also signed by Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriquez. and yes it has basically a screen play in the back which is over 3 times the amount of pages than the actual story.
Still pretty steep at $250 but a REALLY nice set of books. Vinny Chongs dj artwork is amazing as well!

I have no direct knowledge, but I would guess the cost of acquiring the rights to the project is also pretty steep. Comic related projects usually are. But the books are really beautiful, so I think they're worth it!

Not to be picky but he looks a little to put together. I pictured Ig as being disheveled and un-groomed.

I asked Joe about this today. I said " the jacket makes him look a little to ritzy for IG doesnt it. His response was something to the effect of. "You gotta keep in mind that this is just a promo shot for the actor and not what IG himself will come across as in the movie" I used quotes but this is more of a sumation of what he said. I think he is psyched that this movie is being made.

Thanks for the replies. I would like to have a novelization of this story rather than a screenplay.

Locke and Key was the first digital comic I bought, I was going to read the whole series on there even though I'm not a big fan of the format but they only released Vol1 on the kindle and that was it. So I bought all the other books, but have no vol1.

I think it would be an amazing novel.
I couldn't agree more with having it novelized verses a boring screenplay. I can't imagine anyone actually excited to read the screenplay other than a theatre major or someone in "THE BIZ".

Shadow Show is an AWESOME book. Joe's story is great, but almost all of them are. The timing of it was rather spooky. I mean, we released this book literally one week after Ray died :(

I am slowly going through this book savoring every story but I just wanted to say the story The Companions was awesome, it IS a Ray Bradbury story it's uncanny.

I would think that if a King lettered (granted it wasn't an original novel) drops from $1.5K to $500, that 26 of these @$1K will be a tough sell. I also believe the S/L's will be available aftermarket below issue price in a year or so.

I really like Joe Hill but I always felt the market wasn't ready for the 'limited edition treatment' that his books got from day 1. Most authors need an audience with a certain critical mass before their books are issued as limiteds, and I'm not sure he had/has that already.

Just announced this Morning!!

Subterranean Press is proud to announce Joe Hill's first epic novel, NOS4A2, a vampire road novel that clocks in at over 800 manuscript pages.

***

Charlie Manx is a very bad man with a very special car-a 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith, with the vanity plate NOS4A2. Charlie takes children for rides in his car, all the way to Christmasland. Christmasland is a magic place, a place just for children.

Victoria McQueen has a gift for finding lost things. If she rides her bike through the Shorter Way Bridge, she can find anything that's lost. She's also the only person ever to have escaped from Charlie Manx. Charlie may have died, but he hasn't forgotten Victoria, and he takes her son for a ride in his car.

Vic McQueen will do anything to save her son, but the Shorter Way Bridge has become a more perilous crossing than it was when she was a child. And who wouldn't want to have Christmas... forever? Sleigh bells ring....

In his terrifying new novel, NOS4A2, New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill makes sure you'll never listen to Christmas carols without a shiver again. But more than just horror, NOS4A2 is a story of strength, of magic, of family, and the costs of love. It's about finding what is lost, even when what we lose is ourselves.

The Limited edition of NOS4A2 will be oversize, with an unpublished novella, "Wraith," that was cut from the original manuscript. It also includes an alternate ending to the novel, as well as illustrations, in both black and white and color, by Hill's long-term collaborator on the award-winning comic, Locke & Key, Gabriel Rodriguez.

The Lettered edition will be one of our more elaborate productions, including a special binding, as well as a custom made autopsy bone mallet, Charlie Manx's weapon of choice, housed in the tray case.

Limited: 750 signed numbered hardcover copies: $125
Lettered: 26 signed, specially bound copies, housed in a custom tray case: $1000

I don't see $125 as that expensive. That includes shipping as well. So if you wait until 3-6 months after release, you might find one for 20% off, or $100. Add on shipping and you are at $110. Is it really worth the wait for $15? Unless you are gonna hold out even more and look for a copy at $75 or less. I think it is good price.

I think with all the extras and the artist they chose for the illustrations $125 was a fair price. I don't buy any of these as an investment so I just think of value. The arc or are sold for 175-ish and that to me is way out of the price range to read a Hill book early.
Although I don't understand why ARCs/AREs have any value once the book is released.
Again I'm not a collector, I just like cool stuff.

I ordered an S/L. I was actually suprised that the price was only $125. Not that I think it should be higher, but Sub Press seems to think so on his books, typically. The Locke & Key S/L's are $250. The lettered seems very high to be. I might have been tempted at $500, but $1,000 is too high.

As mentioned in the Joe Hill thread, where I assume this will be merged someday, earlier today I ordered two of the S/L's. The order appeared to go through just fine based on the confirmation email I received.

The price tag on the Lettered is way too high, in my opinion. At half that price I would have been tempted, but at a cool grand, there is no chance.

22 of the Lettered editions have sold so far (only 4 left), so it appears to be working out well for Sub Press.

Anyone know if the S/L comes in a slipcase?

EDIT: Just sent me a message, they don't. Now I'm not sure if I should get it. The IT SE from Cemetery Dance cost exactly the same, was a bigger book and had a slipcase. Not to mention their Shining SE at 95$ comes with one.

I just hope the extra novella will be published separately from this.

Let's not candy coat this for a moment. We all know this edition is expensive because of Joe Hill's fee and because he is King's son. Want proof? Look at small presses and absolutely fantastic, unique and affordable lettered editions they're doing. Those lettereds max out at $500. Shit, Dark Regions are doing a lettered/deluxe edition of 13 copies of Tom Piccirilli's new book and it's priced at $300. Compare the extras and what descriptions say the book will look like, and Hill doesn't even come close. More proof? Write ups and endorsments by Uncle Steve create carreers. Show of hands who read Cronin before King endorsed him? He did a write up for Clive Barker without actually even reading the book and Barker's carreer exploded after it. Joe Hill was a published author before the news who his dad broke, but after people found out it became a totally different level of success and his limiteds have gone up in price. I fully admit to buying Heart-Shaped Box because someone told me he's King's son.

This is a smart business move for SubPress. They're milking the collectors because they know they can. This book is priced the same as Simmons and GRRM. In what reality does Hill outsell either of those authors? Again, I like and collect Hill, but the price of that lettered is too expensive for a writter with two novels out, both of which have been remaindered.

You summed it up perfectly, WDIL. I'm not discouraging anyone from buying these books because I'm sure they're going to be nice, but there's just too big a discrepancy between Joe's actual position as a writer in the bigger scheme of things, and what book publishers make him out to be.

I'll stick with the trade edition.

I think being SK's son only goes so far--Joe Hill is a very talented author and he hasn't milked his connection to SK nor has SK really shilled for him like he has for others. They wrote two short stories together but that's it.

Both Tabitha King and Owen King have written stuff and neither have gotten close to the same level of recognition that Hill has received.

ur2ndbiggestfan
12-03-2012, 03:20 PM
I don't why I ordered and read THE PASSAGE, but I don't think it was because King hyped it. I usually disagree on his opinions of books anyway. I usually buy limited edition books because I have already read some stories by the author and liked them well enough to take a chance on a limited edition of his or her work. The few things I've read by Joe Hill did not grab my interest at all, so that is the reason I am passing on this one. I am vastly more excited about getting my lettered Vance books (which are much more reasonably priced) from Sub Press since he is my all time (tied with one other) author.

Here's the thing that annoys me most about the whole King/Hill situation. When the news broke that Hill was King's son the accusations started flying that he only got published because of his famous dad. Self-proclaimed King experts then jumped in to defend Hill saying he had deliberately concealed his identity and that his success was entirely based on his own work.

Fair enough. But since then, many of these King experts and some King related websites have become King/Hill orientated. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! If you want Hill to be respected in his own right don't use King's fan base and on-line presence to promote his work. When I check for news on my favorite author I don't want to read about what his bloody son is up to. If you think he's that good why don't you set up a fan-site for Hill on his own?

Maybe these people are just preparing for the future. They know that King related news will slow down in a few years (not too few, Gan willing) and are looking for a way to prolong their relevance with a gradual transition from King to Hill.

biomieg
12-04-2012, 07:44 AM
Are you also referring to this website? I would have agreed with you in the past but there is a reason that the 'Other Authors You Collect' subforum was established. Now virtually all Joe Hill-related news is located there (as far as book collecting goes anyway). This thread should probably be merged with the existing Joe Hill thread, that's true. But the way things are organized now you can avoid reading about other authors by simply avoiding that part of the forum (again, as far as book collecting goes, I don't really visit the rest of the site that much so I wouldn't know about more general Joe Hill news & gossip).

I understand this, and i guess that it's also related to me. I have a website about Stephen King & i dont hesitate to talk about Joe Hill as so far i liked his books.
But on my website i also mention the upcoming new books by Bernard Werber (a french author that i follow with attention), and also write occasionally about other authors.

So, ok Joe is Steve's son... but for my it's not about who's related to who, but for the stories.

the s/l well on its way. Joe is obviously picking up steam. Im about 3/4 of the way through NAS4A2 and have to say haveing just read insomnia im haveing more fun with this one. More maturely written than his other stuff and really funny! I have laughed out loud several times and no i wasnt drinking :nope:. I think this man is on his way. When I read (most) of King's novels I feel like Im standing right next to the characters and am part of the story. I read his short stories and loved and was surprised by "The Cape", I tried to read Heart Shaped Box - OK, but couldnt make it to the end. Read "HORNS" and bought copies for other people! What a fun read. done with it in 3 days. Working on NOS4A2 stayed up and read the first 300 pages, loved it and then.... still reading.

HORNS was an excellent read. Better than some of SK books. I think his ideas are original and interesting. I do not find NOS4A2 a scary read. I was expecting more/better,

I would guess he starts in Boston or New York, and ends in either Seattle or San Francisco.
I am guessing that puts him on San Francisco between 5/10 and 5/23.

Interesting note; There appears to be 10-copy signed cartons of books, ISBN: 978-0-06-I probably shouldn't post it, so I won't

Those carton are limited for sale only to large retailers. B&N, Amazon, etc...

I presumed that, but hopefully smaller bookstores (and the stores where Hill will be visiting) will get some, versus Amazon who will only ship the books out in a padded envelope or box with an "airbag" in it.

That's how you do a limited edition. The forthcoming limited edition of The Shining is so boring.

Maybe I missed it upthread somewhere but where did you get this list from?

Just guessing, someone chime in and help.
If the 9 cities listed are his only stops, his itinerary would be:
Boston
NY City
Austin
Kansas City
Boulder/Denver or vice versa
Seattle
Portland
San Francisco

Without spoiling anything, how is NOS4A2 compared to Hill's other work or King's work for that matter? I'm still debating whether or not the LE is worth it or if I'm better off just reading the trade.

FWIW I liked Heart-Shaped Box and 20th Century Ghosts, but Horns not as much.

I was just the opposite. Horns was my favorite. If you dont collect S/L I wouldnt buy it. But $125 is pretty reasonable (compared to King books lately) I love alternate endings and additional materials.

If you liked HSB i think you will be happy with this one. I know this is my favorite hill novel to date. finished it last night. the end was good but the journey was even better. I laughed to the many similar feelings i have felt or had in my own life that were spot on and there is some nice nasty stuff in there too.
This would make a really creepy movie i think. I think he is just getting better with time.
I can only imagine what kind of stuff he would be writing if he was on drugs . Im certainly not condoning drugs but i am curious. maybe its a good thing we may never know:)

OK. That's the regular Galley/ARE. LOTS of them floating around. I couldn't imagine that they printed another edition of the "Uncorrected Proof" because they REALLY hate distributing them and usually only do so at the author's request for small venues. Hence why there are less than 50.

The answer is typically "A Lot". Since he's still up and coming in the literary world, and not yet a household name like other member's of his family (cough, his dad, cough), they tend to send one to every critic, book blogger, and periodical that exists.

I doubt this number includes the uncorrected proof, more likely just the normal ARE, but there are 2,393 copies in print.

I'm seeing if I can find a print run of the uncorrected proof, but since it has no ISBN, it's hard to find.

It was slightly damaged. I contacted the seller and he happen to have a mint copy he sold me for 70 gbp . Thats what i needed the money for the other night, thus the impromptu sale. He was gonna sell it to another person. So if all goes well with the shipping from UK i will just need to acquire one of the 2nd US proofs.
