Do you own original, official, or formal artwork from the Dark Tower or other books?

This for the originals, or quality prints, of the pictures that are printed in our books.

Post them here!

Original artwork....called Hot Chocolate. This painting is by Michael Whelan and appears in DT VII as a full page illustration in black and white near the end of the book.

Walk in.....sorry for the bad Hitchcock angle! This ink drawing was done by Michael Whelan and appears as an illustration on an early page in DT VII (I forget which page, but somewhere between 50 and 100).

Sign Post (Odds Lane and Tower Road). This is a painting that I just purchased from Michael Whelan, and like Hot Chocolate, it appears at the start of a chapter in DT VII.

Wiz, can you go back and edit your posts to name the artist and the book in which each piece appears? For posterity sake. Thanks!

Those are amazing Wizard! I would probably kill someone for the Sign Post picture.

Here are my Whelan prints...Roland on the Beach and The Crimson King. I saved up for each of them and for my birthday last year, my mom had them matted and put in the beautiful wood frames. Both are signed by Whelan and numbered. The Roland on the Beach one is number 47/500 and the other is 24/500. I'm really proud of them and when I can save up enough money again, I'd love to have his other paintings to add to my wall. They hang proudly in my living room and everyone who comes over loves them, especially the Crimson King one. It always gives me an excuse to tell non-King fans all about the Dark Tower. :D

A couple of new art acquisitions by me, both come from Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla.

These are preliminary pencil drawings done by Bernie Wrightson before he painted the actual artwork that you see in the book.

This first one is Susannah throwing orizas:

The Illustration I'd love to have the original artwork of is the Unfound picture of Roland with his hands over his eyes. I was fortunate enough to see it at Palavercon, and get good photos of it, which I'll probably frame the best one eventually, but I really wish I could afford the original if Whelan ever sells it, (if he hasn't already). That's my favorite piece of art from the series.

All the Whelan art came from their website, the Phil Hale painting came from Albert Moy as well as all the Jae Lee art (He also had a Wrightson painting Bob purchased) and the Concordance cover by Alan Clark came from his website he ran a sale up to 50% off so he could buy an electric car (his wife would not let him buy it unless he paid for it with money from selling art  )

I picked that frame for the first Dark Tower art I got (the legends and Gunslinger on the Beach prints) and it has worked for all the other Whelan art I have got, I think of the little hole detail along the inner edge as bullet holes.

The Hale painting was real tough, tried to match the feel of the gaudy 50s/60s pharmacy.

*************BREAKING NEWS FLASH******************

At long last, I just got an e-mail from Jae Lee (I haven't heard back from him in at least 2 months).......

HE IS MOVING TO LAS VEGAS AT THE END OF THIS MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, he told me to drop by his apartment so I could get some things signed (yes Ari, finally I am going to deliver!)

And as we speak, he just sent another mail answering several questions I had.

HE IS NOT LEAVING MARVEL!! He said it doesn't matter where he lives since all the art is sent electronically.

The reason he is moving is simple...as he puts it.....POKER ANYTIME and with the condo market such a mess there, there are some great deals.

I am going to see him tomorrow after lunch.

Dave,
I knew you had a lot of artwork, but I didn't realize just how much until you posted it all together. Very impressive, I love it!

Thanks I have always loved King and had most of the S/L's released over the years, unfortunately I had to sell almost all of them during different hard times, except the DT S/L's. When I had the medical issues last time and had to sell the house in CA it gave me opportunity to buy more than I ever could have before (thank you CA property values) and since The Dark Tower is my favorite I concentrated my collection on DT stuff (I was inspired by David/Wiz's art) and being a comic fan already I started with the Jae Lee art then got the 2 original paintings. Unfortunately the new medical problems may force some new selling but the DT stuff is safe for now (bankruptcy before DT collection:P ).

Here is the last piece to my art wall finished minutes ago, my Lookout (a real rook skull from England won off Ebay).

He is a great artist, and a cool guy, some of the originals are pricey but some are very reasonable. He sure does a lot of book covers for small press publishers.

P.S. He will do a remarque on most prints for just 15.00 quite a bargain.

So yeah, I'm not reallly sure why it is I never posted this one before. Other than the expense of the book, I absolutely love my Lettered of Green Mile. Basically, I was so disgusted with the numbered edition (I know some of you out there like it, but I think it's absolutely the worst King limited I've ever seen) that I sold it back for the original purchase price and got one of the Lettereds instead. I know it was a lot of money to pony up, but I think it was well worth it for one of the better King tales. I mostly thought the artwork in the book was crap, and I'm sure a lot of people were disappointed with the original they got with their Lettered, but I don't really think I could have asked for a better one. I checked in the book to make sure and it is indeed Coffey in the electric chair. Tell me what you guys think.

Hey All - I got a print from Alan Clark today. I love it. It's the "Frontispiece for THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE, edited by Christopher Golden, Hank Wagner and Stanley Wiater, published by Cemetery Dance". I had him do a remarque, and he continued the cool tree on the right side, lower corner, out onto the mat. I ordered a frame and will take a photo once I get it up. I got this painting delivered yesterday from Heritage Auction Gallery. I like it quite a bit. 17" x 24" acrylic on masonite. Painted by Alan Clarke and used as the color frontispiece for THE STEPHEN KING UNIVERSE by Stanley Wiater.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/clarkedarktowerpainting.jpg

The frame is terrible but I plan to reframe it with something that looks nicer.

I thought I might have paid too much but the asking prices for his newer original paintings are much higher than I paid so maybe I did OK.

I'm still not sure if I like Heritage or not. This auction was over on June 3 and I paid with a credit card on June 4. I finally got it on July 7.

I called Heritage a couple of weeks ago to inquire and was told "Sir, this is our busiest time of the year."

Well.....OK. The Post Office hires temporary help during Christmas....knowing it will be their busiest time of the year. IMO, Heritage should do the same.

On the positive side, the painting was extremely well packed and I got e-mail notification with tracking number when the painting was sent.

This was my first winning bid with Heritage so I didn't know what to expect. I'm sure I will bid with them again if it is something I really want.

Bob-

Some months ago, I won two art auctions from Heritage (the two pencil preliminary drawings by Bernie Wrightson from Wolves of the Calla). It did take Heritage somewhat longer to ship them, but the packaging was incredibly well done to ensure the safety of the art work. I would buy from them again.

Juliana-

They've always been slow in shipping but never this slow. I did call them a few times 2 weeks after I've paid when no shipping notification was sent yet. The guy from customer service sent it all Fedex overnight after my 3rd call. The books were all double boxed and arrived promptly the next day.

Thank you!

The Heritage website has a list of FAQ's. It says you should usually have your merchandise 10 to 14 days after they receive payment. If not just give them a call.

Well....when I did give them a call 16 days after they received payment they made me feel pretty small. That's when I got the "Sir, this is our busiest......" statement. Oh well. Patience is a virture, I'm told.

I'm still not sure if I like Heritage or not. This auction was over on June 3 and I paid with a credit card on June 4. I finally got it on July 7.

On the positive side, the painting was extremely well packed and I got e-mail notification with tracking number when the painting was sent.

This was my first winning bid with Heritage so I didn't know what to expect. I'm sure I will bid with them again if it is something I really want.

I too recently got some goodies from Heritage (probably from the same collection) and had similar thoughts. Took forever to get my stuff to me, but did an outstanding job of packing. Double boxed, with a ridiculous amount of packing peanuts.

If I had to choose between slow & well-packed, and fast & poorly packed, I would pick slow and well-packed every time.

Nice painting Bob!

Three auctions total.

The Dreamcatcher Promo Ledger, a Stephen King Calendar, W&G Promo, and Lisey's Story Notebook.

Night Visions 5 S/L (Not sure why I bought this one as I already have one).

The Colorado Kid S/L (Miller Version). Got this for $215 shipped, which was below issue price. Already had the Potter version...so I guess I have to buy the Chadbourne version now (yuck).

Jerad Walters of Centipede Press is making the drive today from Denver to Amarillo bringing his art scanner. He is preparing for an upcoming book which will be titled something like "Artists Inspired by Stephen King." I think it will be very similar to his recent Lovecraft artbook but I don't know if it will be that big or not. I told Jerad many months ago that he could have access to my collection if he wished.

So, for the next three days we will be hauling paintings to the frame shop for disassembly, scanning and reassembly. It should be fun. I'm looking forward to it. I get so few chances here in Amarillo to meet personally with members of the collecting/publishing community.

Nice one Bob. Extreme caution is required though.

I am a bit apprehensive. But the frame shop (actually more of an art gallery) that we will be at is the one that I have used exclusively for over 10 years. They are the ones who have framed most all of these pieces. They know me and my collection very well and will use appropriate caution.

I'm also taking the opportunity to upgrade the presentation of some of the pieces. The Whelan paintings from THE GUNSLINGER, for instance, came framed by Audrey Whelan with plexiglass over the artwork. I'm going to put a product called "Museum Glass" in place of the plexiglass. It virtually eliminates glare and reflections and I think you will be able to "see" the art much better. I have used it on all my frame jobs for the last two years and am really sold on it.

Jerad's is not that big, but it is transportable which is what is needed in this case.

This looks about like it with an image area of about 12" x 18".

http://www.antarespro.com/Item.aspx?sku=27961&sgd=330d317d314d309d315

We have found that we can't do some of the really large pieces like the Rick Berry pieces. The medium size ones take about three scans. Jerad then pieces them together digitally later. I'm not really sure how that is done. Maybe I will find out later today when we really get going.

Some museum glass also cuts back the harmful rays that can cause your artwork to fade.

Only good news to report, I am happy to say. Jerad and I scanned about 24 pieces of artwork today. We did almost twice as many as I thought possible in one day. We are getting lots of help from my friends at the frame shop. They take them apart, Jerad scans them and then they are reassembled. It is a pretty smooth operation and it is going very well.

All went very well with Jerad's trip to Amarillo, I think. The staff at The Colony, Gallery and Frameshop were fantastic and were able to unframe and reframe about 35 art pieces in a day and a half while allowing Jerad to scan them in between.

Here's Beverly, master framer and reframer, and the MVP of the whole operation.

dont it require an authorisation, or paying the authorisation by the artists?

I don't understand all of the legal aspects of it but Jerad (or any publisher) must get authorization from the artists to reproduce their work in the book. This can range from a fee paid to the artist up front or possibly even royalties from the sale of the book. With so many artists involved royalties would seem out of the question. I think some artists have sold him transparencies of the work to be included in the book. There seems to be many ways to go about it but all the published work will have the artist's approval to publish.

Ok, these pictures are total crap, but at least you will get the idea. I finally got my two Wrightson pencil drawings and the Jae Lee Gilead pencil drawing framed. They arrived late yesterday. I am going to hang them above and beside one of my major book cases. First it was night, and we only have mega cheap lighting in the room. I tried flash and non-flash photos, but all of them were crap. Anyway, wanted to share so you get the idea.

The Wrightson pair are framed exactly the same, simple black frame and grayish mat, The Jae Lee Gilead pencil has a nicer black frame and mat. Audrey was going to frame these herself but could not get the materials she wanted so she (with my permission) farmed them out to her go-to framer in Arkansas who does a lot of Michael's work. All I told her was that the walls of the room in which they will hang is a deep red color and I did not want the pencils (which are light) to get lost. I am pleased with the result, not thrilled, but pleased.

Thanks Bob. I think it is the best also, and I was thrilled when it was chosen to be the cover of the Guidebook. Randall Flagg

I, too, have a lot of trouble photographing art behind glass.

Some tips I found that work.

Photographing art behind glass can be a challenge. Glass reflects light like a mirror. Sunlight outdoors or gallery lights indoors or your own cockamamie lighting setup anywhere in between may well reflect in the glass you put over your art. I have often accidentally included me in photographs of art behind glass or art that is glass.
The best way to photograph art behind glass is to take off the glass. If you can't get rid of the glass, light the art through the glass obliquely from the sides and shoot straight into the image while hiding the camera (everything but the lens) behind something soft, non-reflective and black. I sometimes use a large piece of black mat board with a circle cut out for my lens — or a dark towel or whatever else is available to hide reflections of me, my camera or my bright metal tripod.
Dual lighting tends to flatten out texture, shape and shadows, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Glass steals focus and distorts your images. It is not clear. Sometimes — especially when it is lighted at angles — glass adds its own blue-green color and ripplish texture. Worse, many camera autofucus systems focus on the first thing they're aimed at, not necessarily what you want in focus behind the glass.
If your glass is any distance from the surface of your art (and it often is) and your camera focuses on the glass, your art may may be rendered out of focus — soft and blurry looking.

Sonia King (http://www.dallasartsrevue.com/members/K/Sonia-King-1.shtml) - Pathfinder - 24 karat gold pieces

Because this piece is so reflective, I had to shoot with a flash at an
angle, then re-square it later in Photoshop, per instructions below.

A quicker, easier shooting technique is to photograph the piece from an angle using direct flash. No tripod required.
Make sure no flash glare gets in the glass and that the entire piece is illuminated and in sharp focus, then square the work up in Photoshop or other software. It is helpful to make another photo directly into the piece (probably with the flash reflecting in it), so its correct proportions are known, because the relative dimensions are not necessarily obvious from the angled photo.

Did anyone here get Jerad's Lovecraft art book? It is certainly pricey, but I'll tell ya'- it's worth every penny. Talk about a truly stunning book. I think it's one of (if not THE!) greatest genre art books ever produced. I was a little nervous spending that much on it, but once I got it I was blown away by the production quality and depth- he put EVERYTHING into it. I'm sure the King book will be equally amazing.

I talked with Jerad the other day and the book is really coming together. He has MANY more artists on board with this book than I thought possible. I have to let Jerad put forth the details when he sees fit, of course, but I have to say he has come up with some truly excellent ideas and some of the artists are very enthusiastic about contributing to the book.

Remember in the film version of The Mist when the main character is painting a movie poster that is surely for The Dark Tower? Want that original painting by the legendary Drew Struzan? This was posted on Lilja's Library:

I already posted this in Your New Pride and Joy thread, but hey, who's counting?

Really excited about this one. I just got it back from the framer's today and it turned out better than I had hoped! It's my Jake & Oy print that I got in Ned Dameron's Wastelands portfolio. I took it to the framer's on the 24th of August and picked it up today. The photos don't show it well, but it is actually quite large in person. This is my first piece of SK artwork, so I am really glad that it turned out well. :excited:

You can't see the frame detail well in the photos, so I may do some close-up shots later on.

Question for all collectors :

Have you ever seen any of the art from John Avon up for sale? I recently grabbed a copy of the UK Waste Lands and LOVE the cover. It was done by John Avon of the UK. I checked out his website and nothing DT related is for sale there. He seems very focus on MTG cards right now. I've searched the web some and can't find anything DT related.

I was just wondering.

Thanks.

HA !!

I meant more like some big room with like tons of walls - like almost a maze sort of deal, so I could hang everything up. I have tons of movie posters, etc, plus now a couple of DT prints and such.

Though... I am liking the idea of a geodesic dome !!!

Here is a pen-and-ink drawing by Mark Geyer that was used as the frontispiece for most of the European editions of BAG OF BONES (not in the US edition). It is 12" x 8".

I'll probably frame it with close to the same materials we used for the ROSE MADDER frontispiece (pics earlier in this thread) and hang it close by.

Mark is really a nice guy. He sent me a nicely inscribed first German edition of BAG OF BONES (SARA) along with the drawing.

I think they are worth having. A few years ago CD did a similar promotion where (for $99) you could have Glenn do a drawing from a King book of your choice. I think they limited it to 10 or perhaps 20 drawings. I got something from THE SHINING and still like it today. I'm not Chadbourne's biggest fan but I got a very intricate original drawing and thought it was worth the money. Everyone would have to decide for themselves if it was worth the money to them but it is definitely, IMO, not a ripoff offer.

I agree I have purchased one of these on two different occaisons in the past, the first I requested something from DT7 and the second something from DT1. Like Bob I am not a huge fan but they are incredibly intricate, they were priced very reasonably (99.00) and they arrived timely (within 3 - 6 weeks which is pretty good for a busy artist) a neat way to own a truly one of a kind piece of art.

Wiz - Any word from Mr. Whelan if there will be prints of any of the new artwork available on his site?

I posted this in the LSOE thread yesterday I think:

Hey all-

I just had a 1/2 conversation with Audrey, unfortunately she had to take another call before I could get all my questions in. But here are some things I can tell you.

(1) Michael Whelan will be selling some AE copies of LSOE from his website, but there are no current plans as to if he is going to make them "special" in some way. Audrey needs to talk to MW about it.

(2) I asked her if they will be selling any prints of the new artwork from LSOE like they did for The Gunslinger and The Dark Tower. Audrey said that she has a couple ideas up her sleeve that she hatched with an associate that helps her with that stuff. She has not approached Michael yet with her ideas, but Audrey says to tell you all here that it may involve a blowtorch or fire in creating said items. Don't ask me to clarify as I haven't a clue.

Audrey did remind me (and I have told this story here before, but we have some new viewers, so it's worth telling again) that when the Gunslinger S/L was done. Michael wanted to shoot real bullets through the signature pages for effect, but couldn't get Grant to go along with the idea. So there is some history with Michael and unusual art mediums.

(3) I did not get to ask her again about what building Roland is emerging from on the DJ cover. Also, I did not get to ask her to ask MW to explain the Roland outside Eluria painting. Michael is under deadline to finish 2 commissioned works by early December. We were lucky to get the response from him on the remarques.

That's all I have to share for now. They both are wicked busy, but if I hear anything else, you'll be the first to see it here.

Yeah it's the cover painting by Alan M Clark for the complete Concordance S/L to someday be published by CD.

I got it a while ago from Alan, he had a big sale on original art so he could buy an electric car, said his wife would only let him buy one if he got the money from selling some art.

I received from Ned Dameron today a 12" x 9" rough watercolor preliminary sketch for one of his paintings from TDT3: THE WASTELANDS.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/rolandandtalithaprelim.jpg

Despite the roughness I really like this and plan to frame it and display it somehow. Ned sent an accompanying letter in which he talks about the preliminary piece and how the shadow casting bonnet Aunt Talitha wears in the finished piece which seems to heighten the mystery came later.

Interestingly he credited Gary Ernest Smith (an artist I'm not familiar with) who did a series of cowboy paintings with their hats shadowing into silouette their faces for the idea. He also credits the trademark for Old Dutch Cleanser! You young folk will just have to Google that. Us older folk remember well the faceless bonneted old woman using a rolling pin to chase away stains!

Just received this email from Alan Clark. Someone may get a good deal:

Dear friends and customers,

I'm writing to tell you that I am currently willing to negotiate deals as low as 50% off of on any original artwork in my online store at ALANMCLARK.COM

I'm doing this because my wife, Melody, was just laid off from her job. There's very little freelance work out there for me at this time and things will get tight for us very fast until she can find more work. In the Oregon economy, that's going to be tough.

These deals won't be done through the store because it doesn't know how to negotiate. Please feel free to call me (541)461-3272 or e-mail me <contact@ifdpublishing.com> with any deals you might like to make.

All the best,

Alan M. Clark

Some artwork I found while going through my portfolios that I haven't opened in years. Original roughs that Michael gave me probably 15 years ago.

I know I have at least one other but I can't seem to find it. My life is packed away very tightly in storage but I'm trying to dig through to find stuff to sell.

LOL. I wouldn't be surprised Ari!

Sunday night I had dinner at Whelan's house with Michael, Audrey, Robert Wiener and Rick Berry. Fun times. Our own mini palaver. Too bad I didn't have any Berry books there for sketchy-doodle time. :P

Pretty soon the artists themselves will be referring to them as sketchy-doodles.
