How was The Silent Patient? They picked it for our bookclub next month, but I don't think I'll have time to get to it. Curious if it's worth it. Also does it have an unreliable narrator?

They're both fairly quick reads. Haunted Forest has a really fun premise (think Jurassic Park but with monsters) but I think it would make for a better film than a book. But it's still worth a read. Sick House had an interesting first half but the second half was a little silly.

Wow, I think it's been a few years since I maintained a list on here. I've started numerous books over the past few years and finished none. I just couldn't focus on reading for whatever reason. After 20 or 30 pages I'd be done and I'd have to force myself to read another 20 pages days later. Now reading 100 pages in a two hour sitting is pretty effortless. I think it's helping me with my writing too since I was beginning forget how other people write books and the sorts of details they include. Let's see if I can get this list up to 10 books before winter arrives, which in Canada gives me maybe 8 weeks!

How was Growing Things?

Hi sorry for the late reply I only check this post periodically.

It was alright. I love Tremblay's novels but his short stories are a mixed bag. A lot of the time they're just weird and you're not sure what's going on or what the point is. There are a few good ones though.

So sorry for the delay Amanda. Apparently I haven't been in this thread since July!

1. Nope, this was my third time reading them actually :D

2. After consulting goodreads it looks like I gave it 3 stars. I remember thinking it was enjoyable and a quick read, but maybe a bit dry in parts. I did enjoy it a lot more than the movie since it went into more detail. But it was definitely not as flashy as the film.

3. Yes, as I was updating my list I forgot about half the books I read this year

Heather, don't tell me you waited until now to read Dark Matter! :o

Also, I picked up a copy of Scary Stories in B&N last month thinking I might give it a read and was surprised to see the stories that I flipped through were only a couple pages long. Is that accurate of the whole book? I thought they would've been novel-length.

Also, also, how was The Institute now that you finished?

Heather19
11-25-2019, 05:45 AM
Oh no way! I read it when it first came out  I picked it for our bookclub so I reread it to refresh my memory.

And yes, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark are a bunch of really, really short stories. It was interesting reading them now because a lot of them are quite morbid for young kids.

I enjoyed The Institute. It started off strong for me but then the ending was a little lackluster. I'd probably rate it about average for a King book. I have a feeling it's going to become a very unmemorable book for me. Have you started it yet?

Ricky
11-25-2019, 03:00 PM
No, I haven't started it yet. I think after Christmas. All of my time that I'd usually spend reading I've been using for writing, so I'm hoping to get back into the swing soon.

And I should've known you'd read Dark Matter already.

Heather19

Glad to hear the writings going good. And I think you'll enjoy the book. Do you ever do audiobooks? It's a great way to get to books when you don't have the time to sit down and read.

And there's only a couple Blake Crouch books I haven't read. The serial killer ones. I read the first but it just wasn't my thing so I never continued. I have been thinking about maybe reading the rest though.

Ricky
11-25-2019, 03:46 PM
No, I wish I could but I just can't concentrate on audiobooks. I end up thinking about something else or my eyes wander around the room, so I need to have the physical book in front of me.

And I think the only Crouch I've read were the Pines trilogy, Run, Dark Matter, and Recursion. Any other favorite standalones that you'd recommend?

Those are my favorites. I also really enjoyed his collection of short stories Fully Loaded, and the book Draculas which he co-wrote with 3 other authors. That was a fun, fast paced read. As for his other novels Abandon was good, but I'd rank it a bit below the ones you read, but it was still a solid book.

My favorite book of the year was Recursion by Blake Crouch. Runners up would be Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah, and Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov.

Heather, you really killed it with reading this year. I'm so proud...and a little jealous.

Did you read any stand-out horror that you'd recommend?

And funny you mention Hark! I bought it this year to read over Christmas but never got around to it. I did read Skipping Christmas by John Grisham, though, so I did get a little holiday reading it at least.

Heather19
12-29-2019, 03:27 PM
Well the last few are technically novellas so I'm not sure I can really count them so it's probably more around 50. And out of those 50 I think I only physically read 19, the rest were all audiobooks.

I'm enjoying Hark! There's some good stories in there, but also a few blah stories so far.

I would highly recommend Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, that's my favorite horror from this past year. This is Halloween by James A Moore and The Manse by Lisa W Cantrell were also both excellent and would highly recommend adding to your list for next Halloween. And Darcy Coates, I just discovered and have been loving her books. She does ghost stories.

I hit my target of 25 books this year. But only by reading some very short novels – the Richard Stark novels, and Gwendy’s magic feather, for example. Other media has been attracting my attention, including this forum. :)

I target in 2020 will be 30 books. We’ll see how it goes.
