I've had this idea for a while. Some might recall we had a TV tournament (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/forumdisplay.php?222-The-Best-TV-Series-of-All-Time) ages ago and I've wanted to do a new version of something like that, but not all-time. Instead, just focusing on the 21st century. I'm sure most of you will agree that we arguably entered a whole new era of television with The Sopranos in 1999. I dunno if we'll do a tournament, but why not have folks just post their lists and debate? Everyone likes lists, right?

It's been 18 years now of "peak TV" and it's fun looking back. So that's what I've been doing, just going and compiling lists of shows. I've selected my personal favorites, not necessarily "the best", whatever that means. I've got my Top 5 for the first ten years and my Top 10 for the last 8. I'm hoping we can get some discussion going and people posting their own lists.

Only 2000 to present, or are shows that begin in the 1990s but run into the 2000s OK?

I was thinking of shows that premiered in 2000 and on, which is why I broke down my list by year it premiered. So no Freaks and Geeks or The Sopranos.

Or The X-Files, Star Trek: TNG, Star Trek: Voyager,

Or South Park, Seinfeld, Frasier, Simpsons, King of the Hill, Futurama, Fresh Prince, Roseanne, That 70's Show, Family Guy, Cheers, Married With Children...most of my favourite TV comedies came out of the 90's. Curb your Enthusiasm almost didn't make it either!

I will have to give this a lot of thought. TV has been amazing over the past decade or so. So much to watch.

I will have to give this a lot of thought. TV has been amazing over the past decade or so. So much to watch.

Please do, and yeah that's why I have been thinking about this for a while. There is just so much great stuff out there these days. I try to watch as much as I can, but with new shows starting up every week and catching up with ongoing shows plus trying to watch older series that I never did it's overwhelming.

Mattrick

TV is pretty overwhelming, which is why I watch so little of it. And usually I watch something great and I want to rewatch it. Like I'm rewatching House of Cards now that it's over. I could could catch up to Game of Thrones instead, or finally watch Fargo, The Crown, and The Newsroom in about the same time. I think Ash vs. The Evil Dead was the first new show in the past several years I've actually watched. And in terms of watching week to week...I just don't have that kind of patience to plan my week around TV. I just want to watch it when I want to watch it, so I usually wait for shows to be well into starting or be totally finished before I choose to sit down. I think the only shows I can honestly say I watch as it airs since its beginning would be South Park and The Walking Dead.

Movies are a lot more my speed in that I can get so many experiences in the same amount of time. I'm sure a lot of TV shows are good, but with the time investment, I try to only watch great. If I didn't love video games, especailly major time sink video games, I'd have more time to explore tv lol

- 2004: Battlestar Galactica
- 2004: House M.D.

- 2006: Dexter
- 2008: Breaking Bad
- 2010: Sherlock
- 2012: The Newsroom
- 2013: House of Cards
- 2014: Last Week Tonight

- 2015: Jessica Jones
- 2015: Making a Murderer
- 2016: Stranger Things
- 2016: Westworld

If you liked The Night Manager, you have to check out The Little Drummer Girl. It's made by the same people. I'm literally watching it as I type this. It's fantastic.

@Iwritecode, your list is solid. You also included a lot of non-scripted shows, which I excluded from my list.

Same here, and also no shows like Last Week Tonight, just straight narrative shows. But feel free to post and talk about whatever, no judging!

I didn't think I included that many. I just posted the things that came up as a browsed a few "best of" lists. Honestly, one unscripted show that I forgot but completely loved is Who's Line is it Anyway.

I still watch the newer version sometimes but it's not quite as good without Drew Carey.
