Welcome to the 2019 Oscar Contest!

The Rules

Oscar night is right around the corner, so I'm going to post the rules for those who might not be familiar with them. Please tell your friends from other boards to come on over and join us. The more the merrier.

You have until showtime on February 24, 2019.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, whomever has the closest number without going over is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have some time before Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess.

Returning this year:

Returning this year will be the online ballot submission I created. Of course, ballots can still be submitted here.

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

What about the 2009 thread though?

Also, that is a very nice first post, agree with a lot of what you said. For my part, I'd just add I hope somehow Annihilation is remembered.

Right now, early on, if there is a lock for Best Picture it's Roma (also Best Foreign Film). Seems to be the consensus pick according to all the reviews. That would be quite a coup for Netflix. The other obvious contenders seem to be First Man and A Star Is Born. I guess these would be the top three for BP right now.

Does anyone want to make any early predictions now? I'll do my usual speculation of which ten I think might be nominated for Best Picture. I'm usually 75%-ish right:

A Star Is Born
BlacKkKlansman
Bohemian Rhapsody
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Eighth Grade
First Man
Green Book
If Beale Street Could Talk
Roma
The Favourite

This year seems to be especially light on obvious choices other than the three I mentioned in my previous post. And it looks like Roma is the favorite (pun intended).

I'll take a crack at it. It's so early so we are all going off of stuff we've heard. The Academy seems against nominating 10 films, so I will choose the typical 9.

A Star Is Born
BlacKkKlansman
Black Panther
Boy Erased
Can You Ever Forgive Me?
First Man
Green Book
If Beale Street Could Talk
Roma

I really hope Bohemian Rhapsody gets in, but that's my longshot for the year. So far I have seen no reviews so just going off my perception, it looks like an incredible biopic and the Academy loves that. Plus I just love Queen and Freddie Mercury and Rami Malek seems to have put in a great performance.

I'm excited for it too. Malek seems born to play that role. I love him on Mr. Robot.

This is for Heather :)

https://www.cartoonbrew.com/shorts/2019-best-animated-short-film-oscar-a-list-of-qualified-films-in-the-category-exclusive-164563.html

It’s that time of year again when the Oscar pundits enter the limelight and start making their predictions for the frontrunners in various Academy Award races.

One category you won’t hear anyone “punditing” about though is the Best Animated Short Film category. That’s because we don’t have any pundits in the animation business, and even if we did, none of them would know what’s in contention. Cartoon Brew is committed to solving at least half of that problem.

We’ve been compiling a list all year long of the films that have qualified for the Academy’s Animated Short Film category. Short films, as Brew readers already know, offer a unique space for innovation and experimentation as few other animation platforms do. It’s where you’ll find some of the art form’s most audacious and exciting annual achievements, and it’s our belief that if more Academy members understood the range and breadth of the contenders, they’d be able to make more informed decisions about the most award-worthy short film efforts of the year.

There are three pathways to qualifying for the Academy Award Best Animated Short category:

The film must have won a qualifying award at a competitive film festival. The list of film festivals and the specific awards at those festivals that can qualify a film can be found in this pdf.
The picture must have been publicly exhibited for paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a run of at least seven consecutive days with at least one screening a day prior to public exhibition or distribution by any non-theatrical means. The picture also must appear in the theater listings along with the appropriate dates and screening time(s).
The film must have won a Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal award in the Academy’s 2018 Student Academy Awards competition in the Animation, Narrative, Alternative or Foreign Film category.

Here’s a few standard disclaimers: Even though all of the films in our list are technically qualified, it is still up to the filmmaker to take the extra step of entering the film into the Oscar competition. This year, we’ve also tried to identify films that have qualified through the public exhibition route, but that can be done very quietly (and often is) so there may be other films that have qualified without our knowledge. The entire official list of qualified films won’t be known until the Academy presents the eligible long-list of films to their membership in October.

So, while the list isn’t perfect, it’s the only list of its kind that anyone publishes about the Animated Short category, and you’ll likely find most (if not all) of this year’s Oscar nominees below. Last year’s preliminary list of qualified films included nine of the ten films that were eventually shortlisted, and all five nominees in the category.

The list was compiled through publicly available information. The films are presented below in alphabetical order:

Pretty interesting. I love the animated short films. I'm happy they've actually started releasing them in mainstream theaters so more people can see them prior to awards night.

I wish the oscar shorts were released in my theatre. I should write to Landmark and ask them to try and get them. My theatre has 24 damn screens. There's no reason they can't squeeze in a showing of the oscar shorts for even a week.

Heather19
10-02-2018, 05:07 PM
Yeah, there's an indie theater nearby that will play them for a week or two. And then the main cinemas usually have a couple of showings during their Oscar week.

The Hollywood Reporter has their early forecasts: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/feinberg-forecast-oscars-3-1148680/item/best-supporting-actress-feinberg-forecast-oscars-2019-3-1148686

Really happy to see some acknowledgement of the two leads in Disobedience. I sorta have to agree with their frontrunners for Best Animated Feature, though I'm holding my breath that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gets in over Ralph Breaks the Internet. The animation style in Spider-Man is just something else. Their projected shortlist for Best Foreign Film is also pretty close to what I'd come up with, and the Academy should be releasing the full list of submissions shortly. There are actually so many great-looking films submitted so far and I'd hope that potentially Beauty and the Dogs from Tunisia, The Cakemaker from Israel, or I Am Not a Witch from the UK could get a nomination in place of Germany's Never Look Away, which looks fine, but a bit by the numbers. Finally, Black Panther for Best Picture... I dunno, I still don't see it. They didn't go for Wonder Woman, and I personally felt that was a stronger film.

What are your thoughts on Roma getting a Best Foreign Film and a Best Picture nomination? I've heard some people say that it won't get a Best Foreign Film nom, but that seems like a no brainer.

mae
10-03-2018, 05:25 PM
It is a no-brainer, and if you'll recall Amour was also nominated for both Best Picture (which went to Argo) and Best Foreign Film, which it won. I don't think there's been any precedent for a film winning both, but I could be mistaken. Still, Roma can certainly do it.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-87-countries-submit-films-foreign-language-category-1150191

Eighty-seven countries have submitted films for consideration for the Oscar in the foreign language film category for the 91st Academy Awards. That number is down slightly from the record 92 films that were submitted last year. For the first time, Malawi, which submitted Shemu Joyah's The Road to Sunrise, and Niger, which submitted Rahmatou Keita's The Wedding Ring, have entered films.

The submissions include high-profile titles like Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, the Mexican entry which is also expected to be a best picture contender; Kore-eda Hirokazu's Shoplifters, the Japanese entry which won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival; the Cannes Jury Prize winner, Nadine Labaki's Capernaum, from Lebanon; and Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War, from Poland, which won the best director prize at Cannes.

France opted to enter Emmanuel Finkiel's World War II drama Memoirs of War, while Spain submitted Javier Fesser's Champions, about a basketball team with intellectual disabilities; Italy offered Matteo Garron's revenge drama Dogman; Germany submitted the love story Never Look Away, directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who had a previous Oscar winner with 2006's The Lives of Others; and Hungary entered the period drama Sunset, directed by Laszlo Nemes, whose 2015 Son of Saul was also an Oscar winner.

Since submissions don't have to be in a country's dominant language, the U.K. has submitted Rungano Nyoni's I Am Not A Witch, which is set in Zambia, while Australia is represented by Benjamin Gilmour's Jirga, which is set in Afghanistan.

Nominations will be announced Jan. 22, and the Oscars themselves will be broadcast live by ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on Feb. 24.

Like I said earlier, this is actually a pretty great year for foreign films. Out of the longlist above, my personal selections for the nine-title shortlist would be:

Belgium, Girl
Colombia, Birds of Passage
Denmark, The Guilty
Hungary, Sunset
Israel, The Cakemaker
Japan, Shoplifters
Mexico, Roma
Poland, Cold War
South Korea, Burning

The five nominees are bolded, with Roma taking the Oscar. Likely wishful thinking with Burning over Shoplifters, as it's a Haruki Murakami adaptation and would be Korea's first Oscar nom, but I'll stick with it.

With honorable mentions to:

Belarus, Crystal Swan
Lebanon, Capernaum
South Africa, Sew the Winter to My Skin
Tunisia, Beauty and the Dogs
United Kingdom, I Am Not a Witch

Well, I guess we can give out the Best Hair and Makeup award now:

https://www.indiewire.com/2018/10/suspiria-tilda-swinton-prosthetic-penis-82-year-old-male-character-1202011200/

The (not-so-kept) secret is out: Tilda Swinton has confirmed she is the actress playing 82-year-old male psychiatrist Dr. Jozef Klemperer in Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria.” For months now, Amazon Studios and “Suspiria” cast and crew have been claiming the character is played by Lutz Ebersdorf, with Swinton even reading a statement on behalf of Ebersdorf at the film’s Venice Film Festival press conference. The actress finally came forward in an interview with The New York Times about Klemperer’s real identity

“Undeniably, I would have to say, for the sheer sake of fun above all,” Swinton replied when asked why she wanted to take on the role. “As my grandmother would have it — a motto to live and die by — ‘Dull Not To.’”

Swinton was transformed into an 82-year-old man with the help of Oscar-winning makeup artist Mark Coulier. The two worked together on Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” which similarly forced Swinton to be turned into an elderly person.

“Although she has a slightly androgynous look from sort of a fashion-model point of view, Tilda’s got a very feminine bone structure,” Coulier said.

Coulier “thickened Swinton’s neck with prosthetics and built her jaw out to look heavier and more masculine” in order to turn the actress into Klemperer. Swinton spent four hours in the makeup chair each day to pull off the look. In order to be fully transformed into her male character, Swinton personally requested Coulier make her a male reproductive organ.

“She did have us make a penis and balls,” Coulier said. “She had this nice, weighty set of genitalia so that she could feel it dangling between her legs, and she managed to get it out on set on a couple of occasions.”

Swinton’s fake penis and balls are “probably in a box somewhere,” Coulier said. “I should try and find it, and put it on a plaque on the wall of my workshop.”

“Suspiria” opens nationwide November 2 following a limited opening in New York and Los Angeles on October 26.

https://www.indiewire.com/2018/10/2018-gotham-awards-nominations-1202012918/

The 2018-19 awards season has officially begun with the nominations announcement for the 2018 Gotham Awards. The awards ceremony, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), consists of 10 awards given to independent features and series.

Nominees for the 2018 Gotham Awards were selected by committees made up of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. This year’s nomination jury included IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn, David Ehrlich, Liz Shannon Miller, and Jude Dry. The Gotham winners are decided by a separate jury of filmmakers, writers, producers, and other crew members directly involved in making films. The Audience Award is selected by IFP members through online voting.

The nominees for the 2018 Gotham Awards are led by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” and Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed,” which both picked up three nominations a piece. The films will compete for best feature opposite “Madeline’s Madeline,” “The Rider,” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Films that picked up two nominations include indie hits “Sorry to Bother You,” “Eighth Grade,” and “Hereditary.”

As the first major awards ceremony of the season, the Gotham Awards play a key role in elevating certain performances and films into the awards conversation. At last year’s ceremony, “Get Out” jumpstarted its awards campaign with three wins, including best screenplay, the audience award, and breakthrough director, while Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” took the top honor, best feature.

It's so weird how things work sometimes. All of a sudden, I'm hearing buzz about First Reformed. I remember seeing the trailer for this one months ago, but then I lost track of it and don't even remember when it came out. It certainly didn't get a wide release. Now, all of a sudden, I'm seeing it mentioned among the best films of the year.

https://www.indiewire.com/2018/10/oscars-2019-best-animated-feature-submissions-1202014919/

Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” and Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” are two of the 25 movies that have been officially submitted this year for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the official submissions list, which includes titles from regulars of the category, such as Walt Disney Animation Studios (“Wreck-It Ralph 2”), GKids (“Mirai”), and Illumination Entertainment (“The Grinch”).

The Oscar for best animated feature includes five nominees. Both “Isle of Dogs” and “Incredibles 2” are frontrunners for a nomination at this point, with the Pixar superhero adventure being a likely candidate for a win thanks to its critical acclaim and its more than $1 billion at the global box office. “The Incredibles” won the category in 2004, when the award was in its fourth year. Recent winners of the Oscar include “Coco,” “Zootopia,” “Inside Out,” and “Big Hero 6.”

Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The awards ceremony is set to take place Sunday, February 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The full list of animated film submissions is below.

“Ana y Bruno”
“Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch”
“Early Man”
“Fireworks”
“Have a Nice Day”
“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation”
“Incredibles 2”
“Isle of Dogs”
“The Laws of the Universe – Part I”
“Liz and the Blue Bird”
“Lu over the Wall”
“MFKZ”
“Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms”
“Mirai”
“The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl”
“On Happiness Road”
“Ralph Breaks the Internet”
“Ruben Brandt, Collector”
“Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero”
“Sherlock Gnomes”
“Smallfoot”
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”
“Tall Tales”
“Teen Titans Go! To the Movies”
“Tito and the Birds”

A fun list! As a huge animation fan I'd predict this as the final list of five nominees:

Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Mirai
Ruben Brandt, Collector
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Honorable mentions would include: Fireworks; Lu over the Wall; MFKZ; The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl; Tito and the Birds.

I still think it looks good and I will probably see it tomorrow. Half of the critics like it, half don't, so it doesn't mean it's bad, but the split more than likely means no BP nod.

I bet it'll be one of those noms (IF it's nominated) that's a vehicle for the main actor (Malek) rather than a true Best Picture-worthy film. Kind of like The Iron Lady for Streep or Darkest Hour for Oldman.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody yesterday and I really enjoyed it. Malek is sensational as Mercury. He really seemed to channel the iconic singer.

I'm not really sure why it's divided critics. The film is your standard musical biopic, and maybe that's the reason right there. The film is pretty paint by numbers, but I still had a lot of fun with it.

I do agree with you, Ricky. I don't see the movie getting a BP nomination, but I definitely could see Malek getting a Best Actor nomination.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee voted on its preliminary list of 20, and, along with frontrunners “First Man,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Ready Player One,” it included two surprise animated entries: Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” and Wes Anderson’s stop-motion “Isle of Dogs.” The last animated VFX nominee was Laika’s stop motion “Kubo and the Two Strings.” This Pixar entry marks the first time a CG animated feature has made it this far in the VFX race.

Marvel’s Best Picture contender “Black Panther” also made the cut along with “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and “Mary Poppins Returns.” However, Andy Serkis’ performance-captured “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle,” picked up by Netflix, didn’t make the cut. Superhero movies “Deadpool 2” and “Venom” were also shut out.

Later this month, the committee will whittle it down to 10 films (announced on December 17th), which will compete at the annual bakeoff.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

“Ant-Man and the Wasp”
“Aquaman”
“Avengers: Infinity War”
“Black Panther”
“Bumblebee”
“Christopher Robin”
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”
“First Man”
“Incredibles 2”

“Mortal Engines”
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”
“Paddington 2”
“A Quiet Place”
“Ready Player One”
“Solo: A Star Wars Story”
“Welcome to Marwen”

Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network.

If I were to guess, the five eventual nominees would be:

Aquaman
Avengers: Infinity War
Christopher Robin
First Man
Mission: Impossible – Fallout

I'll say Aquaman takes it. Those underwater shots look stunning and beautiful.

Yeah, there's something missing, I agree. Hollywood is having some major issues recently with high concept Sci-fi, see Jupiter Ascending and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

You might be right about Ready Player one for the same reasons why I mentioned that Mortal Engines might get a nomination.

https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/12/2019-golden-globe-nominations/577486/

The Golden Globes—Hollywood’s annual Oscar-adjacent celebration of the beginning of awards season—announced their nominees Thursday morning with a predictable showering of love on films like A Star Is Born, The Favourite, Green Book, and Vice. The television nominations held a few more surprises as the members of the 90-odd Hollywood Foreign Press Association did their best to hack through the thicket of peak TV. But in both mediums, the Globes’ ultimate consideration has always been superstardom, and most categories were thus laden with famous names and blockbuster hits.

The Globes divide their awards into “comedy or musical” and drama, but a couple of ostensible musicals (A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody) competed as dramas, while some of the leading comedies (Vice, Green Book, and The Favourite) are centered on dark and dramatic themes. Either way, most of the expected Oscar contenders were featured in one category or another, with the biggest snubs being acclaimed indie dramas like First Reformed, box-office disappointments like First Man, and Steve McQueen’s heist thriller Widows.

In television, the Globes largely fêted streaming television and cable heavyweights like FX and HBO. Top nominees included the final season of The Americans, the Ryan Murphy shows American Crime Story and Pose, Netflix’s recent hits Bodyguard and The Kominsky Method, and Amazon’s Homecoming and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The Globes often suffer from “shiny new toy” syndrome, lavishing nominations on new shows and forgetting past winners. Just as important is spotlighting big stars who can attend the January 6 ceremony, which will air on NBC at 8 p.m. EST and be hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg.

In that regard, the TV categories were just as glitzy as the film ones. Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey, Michael Douglas, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Candice Bergen were among the television nominees, further proof that whatever wall once existed between the two mediums has all but vanished. Still, at the Globes, the movie awards are the main event, since they attempt to function as a preview for the coming Oscars (in television, the prime award remains the summer’s Emmy trophy).

The big contenders, then, include Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic Vice, which topped the field with six nominations despite still being embargoed for reviews; Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, which has been a box-office sensation and cemented its Oscar-frontrunner status here; the dark royal comedy The Favourite, which nabbed acting nominations for all three of its female stars; and the crowd-pleasing race-relations comedy Green Book. Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, a surprise summer hit, also had a good showing with four nominations, as did Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins Returns.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, Netflix’s big awards player this year, was confined to the Foreign-Language Film category but also secured Best Director and Screenplay nominations. If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Moonlight, was nominated for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress—a strong impression for a film that takes a subtler approach than some of the Globes’ big favorites. Perhaps the most baffling snub was of Sam Elliott, the dynamite supporting actor of A Star Is Born, who has been tipped for Oscar success. But the Globes have never synced up every category to the Academy Awards, and many other looming precursors—guild nominations, critics’ awards—will soon offer their own predictions.

Agreed. He actually said "if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will". If that's not homophobic, I don't know what is. Being gay is not something you can "prevent". Even if it was eight years ago or whatever, he could've reacted differently. GLAAD made a very well stated response:

"Kevin Hart shouldn’t have stepped down; he should have stepped up," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement.

"Hart's apology to LGBTQ people is an important step forward, but he missed a real opportunity to use his platform and the Oscars stage to build unity and awareness. We would still welcome that conversation with him," Ellis continued.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/academy-unveils-2019-oscar-shortlists-1168394

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday unveiled the shortlists for nine Oscar categories, which effectively pares down the list of awards hopefuls from which Academy members will chose nominees in each of the categories. It is the first time that the Academy has released all of its shortlists on the same day. And it gave some films a boost, while others — particularly in the documentary feature and foreign-language film categories — were left by the wayside.

As expected, Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, Mexico's submission for best foreign-language film, secured a spot in that category, where it will compete against such other films as Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War, the Polish entry.

Mary Poppins Returns showed it could be an Oscar force, appearing on the score and visual effects shortlists as well as taking two slots on the best original song shortlist, where "The Place Where Lost Things Go" and "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" both made the cut.

The Oscar nominees will be unveiled Jan. 22, while the 91st Annual Academy Awards ceremony is set for Sunday, Feb. 24, and will air live on ABC.

A few surprises here for me, with Aquaman being looked over for effects and especially the foreign shortlist, which came out close to mine (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?21674-The-Official-2019-Oscar-Discussion-Contest-Thread&p=1125892&viewfull=1#post1125892) but has some weird omissions (no Sunset or The Cakemaker, but a little-known film from Kazakhstan, really?). Well, I still guessed six of the nine (seven if you count my honorable mentions)... Also, why no "I'll Never Love Again" from A Star Is Born for Best Song? That is a stunning song!

I know I'm going to get a lot of heat for this, but so be it.

I watched Roma over the weekend and while I liked it, I'm not seeing where all the praise is coming from. I love Cuaron. Children of Men is one of my favorite films of the past 20 years. You can see how close to the subject material Cuaron was with Roma. That being said, I feel like it's being a tad overrated.

I get it. It's a "day in the life film" where we follow a woman who is often marginalized by society. I just wasn't blown away, which might have been because of all the hype, but part of the problem for me is I never felt that attached to the main character.

She feels like a bystander, which is essentially the point of the film, I get that, but I would have liked to have seen why the children love her so much. We never really get that. She has a few interactions with the children (the scene on the roof) but that's not enough to make me feel like she is an essential part of the family.

I'm sure I'm going to be fighting this battle until Oscar night and probably long after. Good film, not one of the best of the year in my opinion.

I'll be watching Roma with my friend this weekend. There are a lot of 2018 movies I've yet to see and I want to see, and I've seen more movies in theatres this year than I usually seen.

Yeah, same here. Of course I don't follow what's coming out at all. Even on Fantasy movie league about 35% of the movies that appear on the slate I never heard of until it appeared. Unless it's a big blockbuster or something that people have talked about for a long time, I don't know it exists. Especially since I rarely watch television and I purposely go into movies a few minutes after showtime to avoid trailers.

Agreed, my biggest issue is that Garland makes Ex Machina, a cerebral Sci-fi film. It puts him on the map and gets the attention of a big studio. They give him money to make a cerebral Sci-fi film and then fuck with him and try to make him change shit. That's what's wrong with movie studios in a nutshell.

Anyway, Oscar nominations are right around the corner. Here are my picks for what I would like the nominations to look like. These are not my predictions for the actual nominations.

Honestly, I don't put a lot of stock in the Golden Globes. Green Book is in the comedy/musical category and Bohemian Rhapsody is in the drama category? That just makes no sense. That should have been swapped and nobody would have given a shit. Nothing has really been cleared up because the Oscar front runner (Roma) also won last night, but that was in the foreign category.

I think the most surprising win for me was Glenn Close for The Wife. The Wife has to be the least buzzed about film out there, although two other nominees in that category, Pike and Kidman, are also in films that haven't received a lot of attention. To me, that category is now wide open. I still think Gaga takes, but with Olivia Colman winning in the Globe in the Musical/comedy category, she might be coming on strong. Honestly, I feel that Colman is actually the supporting actress in that film, but it looks like they are going to push Stone and Weisz for supporting.

You guys, I'm so out of the loop this year. I didn't even watch The Golden Globes :( I haven't seen it but how was Bohemian Rhapsody not in the comedy/musical category? What category was A Star is Born in? I would have put both under musical. I've also never even heard of The Wife. And I have 2 free movie tickets that I got around black friday that will expire soon, and there's been nothing released at the theaters that I want to go see. What's happening to me :panic:

I really liked the trailer for The Wife and when I posted it last year in the trailers thread, I even made a comment that it will get Glenn Close an Oscar nomination. Oh and Bohemian Rhapsody was not in the musical category, I think, because it's about music but not a musical per se. Mary Poppins Returns would be a musical in that sense.

Your reasoning is sound, but I cite Inside Llewyn Davis, nominated in 2014 for Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy. There's no reason both A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody shouldn't have been nominated in the Musical/Comedy category.

https://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/1026057-oscars-to-air-hostless-for-the-first-time-in-three-decades

For the first time in almost 30 years, the Oscars will air without a host, Variety has confirmed. The producers are apparently planning for a group of A-listers to introduce various segments throughout the night.

Kevin Hart was originally going to host the event but dropped out hours later after derogatory comments and tweets previously made by the comedian about the LGBTQ community were unearthed. After an appearance on Ellen Degeneres’ show, it was rumored that the Academy had considered welcoming Hart back as the host had he used the opportunity to apologize. Hart’s appearance on the show only furthered the controversy for the actor and for DeGeneres.

The Oscar producers and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences are seeking top talent, hoping to line-up a group for the telecast which is airing live in about six weeks. The broadcast will feature skits and will “play up a high-profile year for music in film” no doubt highlighting likely nominees Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, and Kendrick Lamar, the outlet noted.

The Academy and its producers are also looking to revamp the show, specifically in trimming it down. An anonymous awards show and live events producer told the outlet: “The people who produce that show are hogtied by the Academy, who as a group are not willing to change very much. It’s hard to know how anyone in my community can really contribute.” The same producer did imply that moving away from a single Oscar host will be a good change.

The Academy Awards have gone without a host only one time before, and before then, there were instances of big-named talent such as Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, Rosalind Russell, and, of course, Donald Duck, sharing the duties. The last time more than three people hosted the event was in 1987 when Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, and Paul Hogan worked the stage together.

The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

I'm happy with that. The Oscars don't need a host, and having one is only used to draw in some casual viewers who might be curious about their favorite A-list star spearheading the night. The SAG awards never used to have a host and it was great. They would get right to the point. Hopefully without the monologue and cheesy opening, they can end the show on time, streamline things, and have some better reflection on film.

Wow! I don't know anyone else who has seen that film. I will post my comments about the nominations tomorrow. In the meantime, we have some business to decide before Oscar night. We haven't talked about this since after the show last year, but we floated the idea of a secondary tiebreaker. We were having tons of ties, so we instituted a tiebreaker a few years ago. Well, last year we still had a tiebreaker even with the tiebreaker already in place.

If everyone is cool with ties, we can certainly keep it with just one tiebreaker. We can also discuss a secondary tiebreaker if you'd like. Some of the ideas last year were determining the winner by who submits earlier, best of the big 6 categories, second most Oscars won. I think that was it.

I haven't seen it. I remember seeing the trailer in theaters, but it never opened near me. I will have to track it down. I noticed that Cold War is opening near me at a few theaters this weekend.

In regards to the nominations, I knew going in that many of my favorite films and performances didn't have a chance to get nominated either because they came out too early or just simply got lost in the shuffle. Films and performances like Joaquin Phoenix in You Were Never Here, Charlize Theron in Tully, Leave No Trace, Toni Collette in Hereditary, A Quiet Place, Annihilation and a few more that I'm sure I'm forgetting never had a chance.

I would have liked to have seen Ethan Hawke get nominated for First Reformed, but that's the only true disappointment I had. The Best Picture nominations are no surprise, although I don't understand nominating just 8. Pawel Pawlikowski getting nominated for Best Director is the biggest surprise. I thought Bradley Cooper had that locked up.

I think more than a few of the categories are locks, but it should be fun debating in the coming weeks. I will say, I think Roma is the front runner right now.

I agree. Just watched the nominations tonight and I'm underwhelmed as well. Some of them were a lock for weeks, but the subject matter of most of them just don't excite me, like Heather said. Compare this to last year when there were, what seemed like, more exciting films nominated for BP: Dunkirk, The Shape of Water, etc. I would like to see A Star is Born, thought.

Black Panther should not be there.

Yup, totally agree. I haven't seen it, but in the time and place that we're living in (especially considering the ridiculous #OscarsSoWhite thing a year or two ago), it was obvious that they were going to star nominating films based on social factors (and popularity) moreso than merit.

They did just add something like 780 new Academy members last year, the biggest increase ever. That could've swayed the voting a lot.

Black Panther is good but its inclusion is more a reflection of a modern cultural zeitgeist. It's not even the best Marvel movie.

Also, if ANY CBM should have won best picture, that film is The Dark Knight. Still the best of its kind and one of the best films of the 00's.

And yes, I'm still bitter that it wasn't even nominated that year. Fucking Slumdog Millionaire. GTFO.

I really liked Black Panther, but yes, it wasn't even the best superhero movie of the year, which was Spider-Verse. I'm fine with it being nominated but the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture should've been Wonder Woman last year.

I'm also shocked that Won't You Be My Neighbor wasn't nominated. It was such a good movie, and has such a wonderful positive message. Everyone should see that movie. It really deserves to be there. I also loved Three Identical Strangers. Out of the nominees, I've only seen RGB (which I did enjoy), and I really want to see Free Solo. But yeah, I thought those two if not Neighbor should at least be there.

No way! Get Out was much more deserving of the Best Picture Oscar nomination than Black Panther.

If Black Panther wins the Oscar for Best Picture, I may never watch again. No joke. If Beale Street Could Talk is the African American vehicle if any they should be getting behind and it doesn't even get nominated. I can't figure this shit out sometimes.

Did you guys see that four of the categories will be done during commercial breaks?

I was just about to post about this. I'm disgusted by this choice. I know most people don't care, but I love those categories. It sends a terrible message. The people who work in those fields deserve to have their work recognized during the show. It's a disgrace. The Academy keeps trying to cater to an audience that doesn't give a shit about watching the Oscars.

Teens aren't tuning in. They don't even watch TV! The Oscars are for die hard fans of film. Fuck everyone else.

Ricky
02-12-2019, 04:50 PM
Yeah, I mean, it's nice that the four categories are going to rotate every year, but it's almost like saying, "You don't matter THIS year...but you will next year!"

The Academy is really suffering this year with trying (and failing) to implement things that it THINKS people want (commercial break categories, the short-lived "Most Popular Film" category, etc.). They really need to think long and hard before they continue taking stabs in the dark and hoping things work.

Still Servant
02-12-2019, 05:01 PM
Yeah, I agree. I applaud them for trying to tweak things and change, but some things don't need to be changed. The show is long, we know that, but it's one night a year. Suck it up.

It's like MLB. They are always trying to make the games shorter for the casual fan. Don't worry about them. They come and go and aren't likely to watch an entire game anyone, so why are busting your ass changing for them?

Heather19

Mattrick

Cinematography and Editing being during commercials makes me sick. They're too important. Funny how they say it will 'rotate' year to year but the Acting Awards will never be in there, nor will best Director or the Screenplay awards.

Cutting out the song performances (which they said they were doing, but might've changed their minds) will cut the show by 20 minutes easy. No way you can't compress everything else down by 10 mins and run a tight 150 mins show instead of 180 mins.

The show also wouldn't feel so long if they started them earlier. Have the show up and running by 8pm EST and if you can wrap it up by 10:30-11pm, you're fine. Some people just don't want to stay up until midnight on a Sunday night.

Mattrick
02-12-2019, 08:54 PM
I think the ratings will see a spike this year because of the populist nominees. People will want to see either Rhapsody or Black Panther win, and will throw out a #OscarsSoWhite hissy fit when Roma wins, despite it being a Mexican film.

Wait, cinematography and editing are the ones being shown during commercials! Those are 2 of my favorite categories :( I really hope this is a one time thing and they switch back to showing everything next year.

I also wish they would start it earlier. I'd even vote for 7. Have they actually pushed back the start time in recent years? I thought it always used to start at 8 but recently they've been doing a red carpet for 8-8:30, and starting the awards then, which is a bit late in my opinion. I can never stay up until it's over, because I have to be up early for work the next day. Actually I wish they would switch the day to Saturday instead. They might get more viewers that way too.

Matt, you're right (and I was thinking the same thing): the acting categories will never be in that rotation.

Heather, I'd vote for an earlier start time, too. And definitely on a Saturday night rather than a Sunday. I guess they figure people are out and not glued to the TV on Saturday nights, but it would be better to be able to stay up and sleep in the next day.

https://variety.com/2019/film/awards/film-academy-reacts-to-category-presentations-controversy-there-has-been-a-chain-of-misinformation-1203139500/

The officers of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors has sent a letter to is membership attempting to assuage concerns about the decision to hold four Oscar presentations off the live air telecast on Feb. 24.

“As the Academy’s officers, we’d like to assure you that no award category at the 91st Oscars ceremony will be presented in a manner that depicts the achievements of its nominees and winners as less than any others,” the letter states. “Unfortunately, as the result of inaccurate reporting and social media posts, there has been a chain of misinformation that has understandably upset many Academy members. We’d like to restate and explain the plans for presenting the awards, as endorsed by the Academy’s Board of Governors.”

The officers then went on to break down how these presentations will work:

– All 24 Award categories are presented on stage in the Dolby Theatre, and included in the broadcast.

– Four categories – Cinematography, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Live Action Short – were volunteered by their branches to have their nominees and winners announced by presenters, and included later in the broadcast. Time spent walking to the stage and off, will be edited out.

– The four winning speeches will be included in the broadcast.

– In future years, four to six different categories may be selected for rotation, in collaboration with the show producers. This year’s categories will be exempted in 2020.

– This change in the show was discussed and agreed to by the Board of Governors in August, with the full support of the branch executive committees. Such decisions are fully deliberated.

The letter states that show producers have “given great consideration to both Oscar tradition and our broad global audience. We sincerely believe you will be pleased with the show, and look forward to celebrating a great year in movies with all Academy members and with the rest of the world.”

The letter was signed by president John Bailey, vice presidents Lois Burwell, Sid Ganis and Larry Karaszewski, Nancy Utley, treasurer Jim Gianopulos and secretary David Rubin.

Just before the email went out to members, it was revealed that an open letter to AMPAS president John Bailey had been signed by more than 40 high-profile cinematographers and directors, from Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino to Roger Deakins and Emmanuel Lubezki.

“Relegating these essential cinematic crafts to lesser status in this 91st Academy Awards ceremony is nothing less than an insult to those of us who have devoted our lives and passions to our chosen profession,” the open letter read.

Many have called for the Academy to reverse course on the matter, but given that it was a board decision, the only way to reverse it would be to convene the body for another meeting in the next seven days.

The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24.

I'm glad they're taking some heat for it. I would love it if they reversed the descision. It is pretty insulting for the people who work in that area because like others have mentioned, the actor awards will never be sidelined. There's so much more to films than who stars in them. The behind the camera work that goes on is just as important as the actors in the film. I wonder if there will be a decrease in viewers because of this.

So glad they reversed that decision. But yeah it shows that they are very out of touch with what people want. I guess I just don't see their need for change. Maybe theaters on the other hand should start showing more independent or smaller films. That way people would have a much easier opportunity to see films that are nominated. And in turn more people would probably tune in to watch the awards.

It really just comes down to ratings. They want to appeal to every day move goers, but some same movie goers don't really care about the art of filmmaking. They care about what race nominees are and if their favourite pop culture extravaganza wasn't nominated for best picture, and that's pretty much it. Appealing to those people would be like McDonald's going meatless to appease vegans. New customers are pointless if you lose your old customers.

In a perfect world that would be the case.

I see that as a chicken and egg situation. Do audiences not care about smaller films anymore because their tastes have changed, or has their taste changed because they don't have access (at least theatrically) to those aforementioned films?

I wonder this too. I remember years ago when it was much easier to have access to less popular films. They would sometimes show smaller or more indie films in the main theater. I feel like in recent years however the theaters have been inundated with big action or superhero movies, or kids films. And not much else. It's a shame though. I really do think more people would go see other films if they had the opportunity to, but maybe it is just that people have changed and most people wouldn't watch them? I do feel that the longer this goes on, that people will just be accustomed to these movies, and aside from us film lovers no one will care to watch smaller or foreign films, which is a shame.

I haven't seen any of the films nominated for Best Picture. The only ones I've seen that have any nominations are At Eternity's Gate, RBG, Isle of Dogs, and A Quiet Place. And I don't really have a strong desire to see any of the top nominated films. I still need to watch BlackkKlansman.

One of my favorites of the year. Spike is definitely getting his Oscar, for the screenplay.

So for those of you that have seen the nominated films, do you feel as if this is a strong batch of contenders? Or is this year a bit weaker than previous ones?

I feel it's strong, yeah. All films deserve to be here to one degree or another. I maybe would have added a few more and taken some off, but it's a very Oscary group of films, as usual. Films like Hereditary, A Quiet Place, Into the Spider-Verse, Eighth Grade, Annihilation etc. had no chance of a Best Picture nomination.

I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

https://tinyurl.com/OscarContest2019

And the nominees are!

You want our choices here or is filling in the form ok? I am just lost at picks this year - be happy if I get the top five...well, and Lady Gaga

You can post your picks here or you can fill out the form. Sometimes people do both so everyone can see their picks. For people who submit a form, I'm able to export a file and it does make it easier to score them at the end of the night. That said, you certainly don't have to use the form.

So we went to see the shorts last night? Has anyone else seen them? I do not recommend them at all. There wasn't a single one I liked, and all of the live action ones were extremely depressing. I feel like they should have put a warning in front of one of them because it was so disturbing. I can't imagine that there were no better shorts this year. Does anyone know how they go about picking them? I really wish they had included 1 or 2 more upbeat ones to balance it out a bit. And it wasn't just us, everyone in the theater was talking about how depressing they were

I think Black Panther is going to win 1 Oscar...but it's biggest competition in both is The Favourite. Costume Design or Production design? I just changed them around on my ballot here...

EDIT - Mike, for whatever reason, when I click edit on the my predictions, I just get a blank post. I want to exchange Black Panther for Costume Design, and The Favourite for Production Design.

Throwing out a theory here. Roma will win best picture and director, but NOT best foreign language film. It sounds counter-intuitive, but voters for Foreign Language film have to actually attend special screenings at theaters, or prove they watched the films in a theater. The front-runners who received a DVD of Roma watched bits and pieces, then voted for what is the film de jour.

I could be wrong, but that is my logic for my pick.

Also, if there's someone named Paul here that submitted an online form, let me know. It could be someone from Facebook that my sister knows because she shared the form. I just want to make sure it's nobody from here.

My friend beat me with the point system I made. I had a 3 point lead, then he got two shorts and was down by 1. The only remaining prediction we differed on was Score, I picked Beale Street, he picked Black Panther.

I should've taken Colman for Actress. She was my pick, but people wouldn't shut up about Glenn Close winning and I feel victim to the hype :'(

Every best picture nominee won an oscar this year. I wonder how often that happens. Seems theres always one or two that go home empty handed. Might be the first time in the first decade of expansion.

Looking back a few years...

2018: Lady Bird won 0 Oscars.

2017: Lion, Hell or High Water, and Hidden Figures won 0 oscars.
2016: Brooklyn, The Martion won 0 oscars.

2015: Selma won 0 oscars
2014: Captain Phillips, American Hustle, Nebraska, and Philomena won 0 oscars.

I usually get tripped up by the sound categories, but the screenplay ones threw me this year, too. It seemed like many of the categories were pretty wide open. This is the worst I've ever done in the contest. :(

Overall, I thought it was a good show. I really didn't mind not having a host. I thought it moved things along and helped the pacing of the show a lot.

Alright a couple of thoughts on the Oscars:

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper had eye sex on stage and we were all there to witness it.

I haven't seen enough of the BP nominees this year to make a proper assessment on whether or not Green Book deserved it; need to seek out and watch all the nominees.

5 of the last 6 Best Director winners have been Mexican (Innaritu, Cuaron, Del Toro) - Viva Mexico cabrones!

The political pandering is getting tiresome - can we just get back to celebrating movies?

I feel dread when I see winners pull out a list of random names to thank. Heartfelt, anecdotal speeches like the one's Lady Gaga and Regina King did are much more powerful and enticing.

I'll think of more later. Overall a decent show; the No-Host didn't hurt the awards as much as I thought it would.

Agreed 100%. Then there were some who had papers but STILL were rambling and unprepared (I mean, Public Speaking 101: practice and time your speech so you know how long it'll take you!). Colman's was the best of the night for pure "realness" and her genuine excitement.

And you would think these people are experts on timing and shit when it comes to reading off a piece of paper, but holy shit some of these cats ran on and on and on.

Agreed, Colman's was one of my favorite speeches of the night. That was genuine emotion right there.

I really enjoyed the show. No host means it goes faster. No need for those silly numbers and stunts. With all the controversies the actual show was really good, I thought. I didn't do as well as I'd hoped in the contest, but I largely stand by my choices.

I was happy with the show. I like surprises, even if they cost me. Oliva Colman is like that all the time - I watch Graham Norton and she is a frequent guest. Can't wait til she's back on as an Oscar winner. I say no more hosts - keep it moving and it doesn't feel like 3 hrs +.

OK, Oscars over, must be time for...March Madness!!!

Yeah, I'm fine with never having a host again, too. No host means the focus is on everyone rather than one person. And you're right. It didn't feel 3+ hours, unlike previous years.

The moment with Gaga and Cooper was kind of awkward, I thought I should look away at one point. I actually didn't think there was a lot of political stuff at all. I don't remember hearing a ton of Anti-Trump rhetoric.

Wait a minute, what's this about Spike Lee storming off after Green Book won BP?!

Fucking cry baby.

It's a shame Lee has to act like that. It's embarrassing. What bothers me is it's stuff like that that fuels racists. They will just point and say, "See how they act?" I know it's controversial to say, but you have to be better than that so these fucking assholes can't say shit.

Anyway, I enjoyed the show, but without a host if felt like something was missing. I feel like you need someone to tie the threads of the show together. Make a callback joke or reference something that happened earlier. I'm surprised so many of you are saying they don't need the host. It's true, the show really flew by though.

I don't know about anybody else, but early in the show I thought they were having some pretty bad sound issues. I could barely hear the orchestra.

I was happy to see Colman win. I really loved her performance in The Favourite. I actually almost switched my pick to her at the last second.

I thought it was great that the Academy seemed to spread things around pretty nicely. The new blood of the Academy have certainly opened things up to a more diverse group of nominees, but the other thing they have done is put an end to the old way of doing certain things. An example is Colman's win. The past Academy voters would have given it to Glenn Close as a lifetime achievement award. The other example is RBG losing to Free Solo. They chose to honor a beautiful looking film over a more timely documentary. That's a positive trend I think.

I have no problem with Green Book winning. It's a highly enjoyable film that hits all the right beats. It's the kind of film you can show to anyone and they will at the very least enjoy it. It's funny watching people start complaining about its win. You can't please everyone. Oh well.

End of Oscar season is always weird. I feel like we've spent months watching movies, debating and predicting and then just like a click from Thanos' fingers, it's over.

The good news is that the world of film springs eternal and it won't be long until we start identifying films as Oscar contenders. In fact, some of my favorite films of 2018 were released in the first half of the year (Annihilation, Eighth Grade, You Were Never Really Here, Hereditary)

It's funny everyone's mentioning the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga thing and while they do have great (some say too great) chemistry together, the first thing I thought during the performance was that it's the way it was shot and chosen to be portrayed that made it come off as the two of them being romantically involved. The sweeping camera movements, the tight close-ups, the staging of them during their performance...it all seemed very deliberately chosen. Then I saw today that it was Bradley that chose the staging of the performance so, although the two of them have great chemistry together (how could they not after filming A Star Is Born?), I really think it's Bradley's directing of the performance that gave it that intimate quality. I mean, think of how different and distant it would've felt if the performance/they were in a wide shot, dead center of the stage.

And that's way more than I ever thought I'd write about Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

Well I did better than I expected considering I didn't give much thought to my picks this year. And I actually enjoyed the show way more than I thought I would. I didn't mind them not having a host at all. It seemed to fly by that way, and move the awards along at a faster pace. I guess I really need to watch some of these movies now. And did Spike Lee really just run off, that's crazy if he did. At least his movie won something so he should be happy about that.

I think you're right. It was definitely filmed in a way that it seemed very intimate. Didn't know that was Bradley's decision, but hey it was a good choice because people can't stop talking about it.

I had a feeling it would. They were very subtle because it's a realistic story, and they didn't need a 9-foot tall alien, but the effects were exceptional in First Man. Infinity War, other than Thanos, had your average superhero effects everyone has seen a hundred times.

fernandito
02-26-2019, 02:53 PM
Just the conception of Thanos himself should have been enough to get them the Oscar. They used groundbreaking technology to enable the directors to center the film around a villain that was completely CGI, and you would often forget he was even computer generated. Thanos was the main character of Infinity War so them deciding to go the CGI route was a colossal gamble that paid off.

Thanos will stand the test of time as one of cinemas most memorable villains. There is nothing memorable about First Man.
