At the risk of making public what could be a private matter, just want everyone to know that Jerome (RF) is a hurtin' cowpoke with some complications after his recent surgery.

I just want to wish him a speedy and COMPLETE recovery and for him to know that I wish him that on a daily basis. Please, all of you....send Jerome your most healing wishes. Thanks

Thanks again to everyone and their positive thoughts for me. 9 days ago the surgeon performed an I&D (incision and drain). Since then the swelling and pain have greatly diminished. I'm not 100%, but I am in much better shape than I was for 5+ weeks that were pure misery.

Just an update on my saga. In August 2018, I had surgery to remove the bulk of the mesh from my hernia surgery. The complications still continued. In late December 2018, I had another surgery to remove every bit of the mesh that was left (5 hours on the table, and 5 days in the hospital).
I continued to have drainage from 3 holes in my lower left abdomen, as well as from the original hernia incision. The new theory was that because of my Crohn's disease, I had developed several fistulas from my colon that were draining from my abdomen. Specifically, 3 fistulas, and the incision. The conclusive evidence was when I had a barium contrast and ultrasound. The moment the contrast was injected into my colon, the barium immediately leaked from the 3 holes, and incision. Voila! After 10 months they figured out why.

I am now seeing IBD experts at UCSF medical center. They intend to put me on Stelara in the hopes that it will put my Chron's in "remission", and that all the the leaking holes will repair themselves, or that surgery (a fistulectomy) would work.

It really has been, and continues to be a painful, trying time, but I just wake up every day and persevere.

Best wishes, Jerome!

I think the misery and complications that often come with Crohn's are under-recognized. It can be a pretty debilitating disease. I have a good friend who couldn't travel more than a 20-minute distance from her house unless she could be sure that she would have immediate access to a bathroom. She was consistently anemic. But then she started Stelara and her health and quality of life vastly improved. I hope the same proves true for you!

Just an update.

On Wednesday 2/12/2020 I go into the hospital for surgery. Three surgeons will be working on me. I'm to have a Colectomy (total removal of my colon and lower digestive tract-including sewing closed my rectum). In addition the surgeon will trace down and terminate the multiple fistulas that lead from my colon to my abdominal wall, as well as to the fissures and fistulas at my bottom end. The surgeon will also terminate my loop illiostomy, and create a single stoma on my abdomen. Forever more this will be where I have a bag, and empty my food waste.

Then an abdominal hernia specialist will do a temporary suture repair to the rather large abdominal hernia I have that protrudes several inches on each side. No mesh, only large sutures, knowing that once it's clear I no longer have abdominal infections, another round of surgery will be needed to "mesh" the hernia.

No mesh, only large sutures, knowing that once it's clear I no longer have abdominal infections, another round of surgery will be needed to "mesh" the hernia.

A mere bag of shells, J. A man like you will come through this with flying colors and sight of the light at the end of the tunnel, FINALLY!!!! You've had surgeries before and kicked ass and I'm sure you will again!!! Of course you can count on my prayers for your speedy recovery. Do what the Doctors tell you to, for a change!! LOL And don't give, Dolores to much trouble. lol If you need anything just shout. I suppose a gift basket of some sort is in order. Which hospital will you be in, the same as before?

Kick some medical ass, Jerome!!!! Get well soon!!!! This place won't be the same until you fully return to the helm!!!

My very best well wishes and positive thoughts to you, RF! Hopefully this will ultimately result in an improved quality of daily life :rose:

I have a friend who's Crohn's disease necessitated a colostomy bag while she was in her late 20s and while she was obviously not excited to have to have one, it did alleviate a lot of the discomfort and urgency she felt on a daily basis. I hope it gives you some respite as well!

In other circumstances I'd assume he was off gallivanting in Mexico with a nice view and a nice beer, but since that just happened, and with the recency of a major surgery, I'm a little worried

Well, after a few setbacks, I think I'm fairly well healed. I had to have a debridement surgery in the summer of 2020 and that required packing every day for 5+ months until the openings healed and sealed. I'm on vacation in Calistoga, and In a few minutes, I'm going to get into a hot-springs pool. It will be my first time getting into a pool or spa in over 3 years.

Here is the view from our porch looking east towards the Silverado trail. If you look closely, you can see the many scars from last years Crystal Springs fire.

Thanks to each and every one of you who wished me well, and gave me encouragement to get well.
Your help was significant, especially during some dark times when I was in intense pain, and wasn't sure I really wanted to carry on.
It's no bullshit to say that if not for my wife, and the folks here (who I felt a strong commitment to, and an obligation towards carrying forward so the site wouldn't die); I wouldn't have made it.

Good news indeed, my friend!!! Told ya there would be a light at the end of the tunnel eventually!!!

Not that anyone asked, but I too have been doing rather well lately for a change. P/T is getting back up to speed and I'm hoping to be walking again in a month or so. Also, got some test results yesterday and my A1C was a record 6.3!!! Also got the "All Clear" from the Kidney Doc. Apparently my creatin level is good, my sodium level is good and potassium is right where it should be. No wounds to watch or new aches orpains (just the same old ones) LOL

So, Jeroma-Therapy looks like we both hit the finished line at around the same time!!!Certainly cause for celebration or a dip in the "Ol' Hot Springs" for sure!!!
