Duma Key: A Novel
by Stephen King

Coming in January (2008 )!

Edgar Freemantle is a regular guy, a construction worker who suffers a terrible accident—he loses an arm, sustains head injuries, and is not expected to live... but he does live, emerging from his coma as a very changed man.

Here is how King described the novel in his own words during his long interview with Lilja of Lilja's Library:

"It's about a construction worker who is involved in a terrible accident... he's hurt very badly and loses an arm, sustains head injuries and is not expected to live but he does and he comes out of a coma and because of the head injuries he has uncontrollable rages and memory lapses.

It's very difficult and his wife divorces him so he decides he's going to move to Florida but he's also thinking about suicide just because of his pain and because he doesn’t like being angry all the time and this psychiatrist kind of talks him out of it and one of the things he says is, "Is there anything that you do that you can use as a kind of buffer against this depression? Is there any kind of new life for you besides working on buildings?" and this guy says, "I used to draw, I used to paint a little bit" and the (psychiatrist) says, "Well, try that" and he discovers that, after this injury, that he is really a very talented painter...

...and he moves to Florida and he starts to paint these pictures and then strange things start to happen with the pictures.

They have this power so that sometimes if he paints things into the world they kind of appear and if he paints things out they disappear, including people.

And there is something going on, on this island, this Duma Key that is actually amping that talent up and making it stronger because there is something wrong there.

That's the real basis of the story."

It makes me happy that there will be 2 new books coming out...that plus the comic and the movie 1408 equals :nana:

This sounds like a great premise, I am looking forward to seeing SK flesh it out.

The older I get the more I wonder about him and these worlds. They show up so often, I think he really believes it. Which is cool as shit because I do to.

Reality is so thin.

I watched a fascinating doco over here called "Painting the Mind", about exactly what Duma Key is about (minus the Danville powers, of course).

About two men in their 50s or so who suffer head injuries in an accident and awake with compulsions to draw and paint (aswell as other mood and personality changes) - not that they are terribly good to begin with but the compulsion drives them to draw and paint and create art at almost every waking moment and as the adage goes, practice makes perfect.

One of them had awakened photographic memories of his childhood town in Italy (which he could now paint with incredible detail), but the funny thing is he could only see the memory in his mind if he physically turned his body and faced a specific direction.

Fascinating stuff.

By the way, Memory, the short story originally published in Tin House magazine that was the initial germ of an idea for Duma Key, will be included in the back of Blaze. At least it's in the review copies.

Thanks Bev, I knew I had heard of this character somewhere. Now I remember reading it in Tin House, I also remember thinking the short story was very depressing. Good but depressing.

Lilja has this:

Duma Key: Where It All Began
A Note from Chuck Verrill, the Longtime Editor of Stephen King

In the spring of 2006 Stephen King told me he was working on a Florida story that was beginning to grow on him. "I'm thinking of calling it Duma Key," he offered. I liked the sound of that--the title was like a drumbeat of dread. "You know how Lisey's Story is a story about marriage?" he said. "Sure," I answered. The novel hadn't yet been published, but I knew its story well: Lisey and Scott Landon--what a marriage that was. Then he dropped the other shoe: "I think Duma Key might be my story of divorce."

Pretty soon I received a slim package from a familiar address in Maine. Inside was a short story titled "Memory"--a story of divorce, all right, but set in Minnesota. By the end of the summer, when Tin House published "Memory," Stephen had completed a draft of Duma Key, and it became clear to me how "Memory" and its narrator, Edgar Freemantle, had moved from Minnesota to Florida, and how a story of divorce had turned into something more complex, more strange, and much more terrifying.

If you read the following two texts side by side--"Memory" as it was published by Tin House and the opening chapter of Duma Key in final form--you'll see a writer at work, and how stories can both contract and expand. Whether Duma Key is an expansion of "Memory" or "Memory" a contraction of Duma Key, I can't really say. Can you?

--Chuck Verrill

I wonder if this is printed in the book? Also, has anyone compared the Tin House and Blaze addendum versions of "Memory"? Are they the same?

Bev Vincent
12-03-2007, 07:46 AM
The letter isn't printed in the book. If you go to the Amazon page for Duma Key, the opening section of Duma Key is printed next to Memory so you can compare the evolution or devolution of one to the other.

Bev Vincent

Tiny spoiler about the cover art:

The cover art for the book now makes a lot more sense to me. The main character paints gulf coast sunsets and adds floating items to them to give them a surreal aspect.

Matt

That would make more sense then. Is that the only difference? The floating pallet of colors?

Wow, this seems like "Word Processor of the Gods" on steroids! If I can reminisce(spelling?) correctly, the narrator's brilliant, favorite nephew passes away suddenly and violently. However, before he dies he gives the narrator a home-made computer that does similar things to Duma...

I know, but still : if they used this kind of idea in the trailer in the USA, maybe they'd like to use the same idea for the UK?
I mean... Contest results are supposed to be choose (the first 10?) by H&S, and the great winner by Steve himself...

Either way, it's gonna be a good year: Duma Key, the next arc of Marvel's Dark Tower, possible progress on the Gunslinger/Eluria book (is that the other one?). From the Lilja's review...

"Duma Key is a very strong book and if I should compare it with other books by King it would be Bag of Bones and Lisey’s Story."

Of course I still plan on reading it, no review alone can change my mind, but the comparison to Lisey's Story is a bit discouraging for me. Hopefully I will not find it at all similar as I hated LS.

Bev Vincent

It's like the best of Lisey, without all the things that irritated people about Lisey, in my opinion.

Agreed, I would never even compare Bag of Bones to Lisey's Story. The first I thoroughly enjoyed while the second I really had to struggle to finish.
However, I still am excited about this release, and if it is anything like Bag of Bones then I'm sure I'll love it. I'll be stopping by the store as soon as I get out of work tomorrow to pick it up.

That's what I was thinking too. I didn't "love" B.o.B. but I did enjoy it while LS I couldn't even finish. Other than being written by King I don't see all that much in common. Either way, I still intend to pick up Duma Key. King still gets the benefit of the doubt with me as far as at least giving each of his new works a try.

Just show up. If they ask about a reciept tell them they forgot to give it to you. Talk loudly. They'll most likely give you one if they have any just to get rid of you.

Well the thing is that I am working tomorrow, and i cannot go at 1hour away by bus to do so...
I will ask to my girl to use her innocent & sad face, just like shnnrc01... :p (on her way back from glasgow.. but may be quite late... erf)
and if they dont want to.. well, she could buy a copy.. if they still have some..

I was supposed to get my copy of Duma Key in advance of the release date, but the damned ebay seller failed to use Priority Mail! It came on the 24th (I managed to resist the temptation, when it wasn't in the mail for those two days, to walk the five blocks to the local bookstore and pick one up on either the 22nd or 23rd just so I could get started), at long last. Had it still not come on Thursday, I probably would've walked to the bookstore and picked up another copy!

But it was worth the wait, at least so far. Normally, I would've finished a new King novel of this length by now, but what with the altered circumstances in my house- I'm still taking care of my roommate, who is recovering from a broken hip- this one's progressing rather slowly. I'm on page 174 at the moment, and so far I love it! This may prove to be the best novel he's written in a few years- since finishing the Dark Tower, anyway. It may prove to be a good thing that I can't just zip through it in two days this time, that circumstances are forcing me to take it at a more relaxed pace; the end always comes too soon anyway.

The worst part of reading a new King book, whether it's a novel, a collection or non-fiction, is always finishing it, knowing that it will be some time before the next one! At least this year there's only February standing in between this one and The Long Road Home, and that there will hopefully not be a long wait between the end of that and the new collection, or the publication of the Grant Revised Gunslinger/Little Sisters of Eluria combo at least. This is truly the year for all things King!

I picked my copy up yesterday and started reading last night. The next thing I knew I was about 100 pages in and didn't want to stop! I'm loving it so far.

excerpt from NY Times Review:

.....
But Mr. King’s use of horror is not what it used to be. It may still be the impetus for his stories, but it is no longer the foremost reason they’re interesting. Sure, he can still use supernatural effects to scare the wits out of you. But lately he also shows off other interests. In the wake of the 1999 roadside accident that permanently altered his consciousness, he has turned the evanescence of health and sanity into his books’ most disturbing source of fear.

So was King on the Today show this morning. I taped it, and just forwarded thru the whole show and no King. Did I just miss it somehow?

Because of other breaking news, King's interview didn't air this past weekend. It will be on next weekend instead.

Thanks, I was wondering what happened. I scanned through and didn't see the interview and figured there must have been a time restraint.

I finished the book at 4 this morning. When I sat down to resume reading around midnight, with about 200 pages to go, I wasn't expecting to finish it; I figured I'd read until roughly 2 AM then go to sleep, then finish it the next night. But I forgot how it can be when a great King novel gets to the shit-hitting-the-fan point, roughly 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through the book, and starts running for the finish at full speed; it's just not possible to put the book down until it's all over.

This one was great right from the beginning, a perfect example of what makes King's work unique and interesting. He spends the first third of the book introducing us to people, getting us to like them, care for and empathise with them, the second third establishing the situation and creating a deep sense of dread, and the last third knocking the shit out of everyone who's made it this far. By the end, we've suffered losses and been put through the ringer, right along with the surviving characters, but it has all been worth it. We're not sorry we've met these people- not even the ones who were lost in particularly dreadful ways, and the trip we've taken with them has been worth the price (however you choose to calculate it: the financial cost of the book, the time it took reading it, the emotional consequences of getting involved with the story and the people in it, all of the above). Some of the particulars are already a little vague in my memory, but I can well recall the broad strokes and vivid colours (all that red in particular); those will stay with me for quite a while. As this is a website already devoted to the work of Stephen King, I see no point in summarising the plot; this has already been done here. Also no spoilers; those of you who haven't read it ought to do so for yourselves. My earlier remark was accurate: this has been King's best single novel since the end of the Dark Tower. So take this particularly strange trip to Florida for yourselves, and watch out for the native wildlife. . .

I finished the Duma Key over the weekend. And, I'm sure, like everyone else who's finished reading it could not put it down through the last 1/4 of the book.
I suppose the crazy chick with the 3rd eye and the way she came to life in his pocket biting him and the descriptive nature of his phantom arm was SK all the way. But, other than that I felt that it could have been written by anyone.... well not anyone but In all honesty it wouldn't suprise me at all in the least if he made an announcement saying that he supervised the publication and edited the story himself while written by another.

I seriously doubt King would do that.

Really, I'm surprised to hear you say that. I definately felt King throughout the whole story.

At the risk of being a bit confrontational, plagiarism, and "ghost writing" are serious accusations-particularly to King. He has addressed the plagiarism aspect on several occasions.
Such an accusation is never to be taken lightly. To a writer it falls just short of being accused of pedophilia or rape.

Drama Drama Drama....
Plagirarism... No, Ghost Writing... plausable in this case perhaps.
Also that Heather says - "I definately felt King throughout the whole story." I think I've already stated my thoughts on that.

Maybe it's my minor disapointment in the book as a whole. I'm thinking this may be the case. You see, I've just finished the DT series again and I may be feeling a bit 'let down' in the lack of fullness to the story. IMO
I'll likely give it another read once my brain decompresses a bit from the DT.
Certainly I've ment no Accusation toward King.... or whoever wrote the story (just kidding)...:nana:

Hey Ryan--I think calling Jerome's post drama is a bit out there. We don't have any of that on this board and I wouldn't classify his genuine concern and warning in that category.

I think the notion that anyone but King writes (or ghost writes) his books is crazy. I've been in it for years and Duma Key is like all the others in the way it is perfectly King.

I know enough about him to know he would simply stop writing before going that route. Well, I believe that anyway.

I think comparing accusations of plagiarism, and/or "ghost writing" to accusations of pedophilia or rape is over the top. hence "drama, drama, drama". which I in every way ment light hearted. My humor sometimes doesn't write too good....
I do however, understand very well the meaning of Morality and Self Worth, and how we all set standards for ourselves to live life in a way we personally believe to be good and true. I do anyway.
That being said. I apologise for any misconstrued thought feeling or action that may have hurt those in this thread. :couple:
