The 2018 Constant Reader Awards (CRAs) are here, with Round 1 polls opening each Tuesday and Thursday from January 16 until March 1. Each poll will be open for 7 days and close automatically. Then the FAS (Final Average Score, an average of all received votes) will be calculated and posted at the end of the poll and updated here as well. The top 30 books (highlighted in green) will move on to Round 2, to begin on March 13. The books in these Round 1 brackets are not competing against one another, so each is to be judged on its own merits, regardless of the bracket it's in.

And we are underway with the first polls now up! :excited:

Is bracket 2 going up today?

mae
01-18-2018, 10:30 AM
Yup, expect each new bracket to be put up around the same time, late afternoon ET.

mae
01-23-2018, 01:34 PM
The first polls have just closed and I've added a Standings table to the first post, which is continually being updated. We've had great level of participation so far, with 30+ votes in most polls, so please please please keep that up, folks! Thank you!

On the trivia side of things, with Bracket 1 closing, this was the first time Night Shift finished second in its bracket. It's always been third, with the top two always being 'Salem's Lot and The Shining, naturally. Even though the books are no longer in competition against each other within the brackets, that's still a noteworthy note, I thought :)

Also, as far as the Standings are concerned, judging by past years, a score of roughly 3.9 or around 78% will be needed to make it into Round 2.

mae
01-25-2018, 02:00 PM
The second bracket's closed and the standings updated. This is easily the lowest The Stand has ever scored: 4.537037037 (its lowest score was 4.724137931 in 2009). Is its five-peat in danger? We shall see.

Also, I've made an executive decision to state that a book was rated only one number, so if two or more different numbers tied for most votes, it's the highest number.

O man. Bracket 5 has four of my all time favourite SK books...

mae
01-30-2018, 06:36 PM
Sorry for being late, but the fifth bracket just went up and the third one was closed. And this is kinda unprecedented, as Different Seasons takes first place over The Stand. Its highest score and placement in Round 1, at least so far.

mae
02-01-2018, 02:23 PM
Standings have been updated with the recent bracket closing. I just wanted again to thank everyone for keeping up participation around that 30-vote mark. Thank you! :grouphug:

Sorry, I couldn't update the table last night with the brackets that closed yesterday, but I just did it now. Amazingly, DT2 came in way way under what it normally received, the lowest of which was in 2014 at 4.603448276. Those two 1s really screwed it.

02-07-2018, 02:56 PM
Bracket 6 and 7 were the dark ages for SK books for me. Many stinkers in my opinion during this period.

mae
02-08-2018, 02:59 PM
With Bracket 6 closing today, we now have 30 ranked books. Anything that ranks below or is pushed down the list going forward is eliminated.

mae

With the Bracket 7 polls closing last night, the following books have been eliminated: The Tommyknockers, Gerald's Game, Danse Macabre, Roadwork, and Rose Madder. That last one kills me, because I love Rose Madder and it's currently sitting last

mae
02-15-2018, 01:40 PM
The Running Man, Rage, Thinner, Dolores Claiborne, and The Regulators have all been eliminated.

jsmcmullen92
02-15-2018, 01:51 PM
How did you determine which to eliminate between Carrie and the Running man?

mae
02-15-2018, 02:00 PM
They got the same rating (3.5) and percentage, but Carrie placed higher due to being rated 3.5 by more votes than The Running Man. That was the tie-breaker. Didn't think it would ever come to that.

Also this is by far the best The Green Mile ever placed in the first round. It came closest in 2012 with 4.720000000.

That's a bummer, I love Gerald's Game  Still kicking myself for not making it back into the thread in time to vote for it. There's some at the bottom that I wish made it on, and quite a few up top that should be at the bottom

Also Green Mile, Different Seasons, IT, The Stand and Misery advance.

Yes, with 25 spots left undetermined, the top five cannot not advance, so those five have clinched a spot in Round 2 and have been marked accordingly on the schedule list.

totally off-topic, but. I've been wondering since morning who the hell mae is, how come s/he runs the awards, and, most alarming, how come they've been here since 2007 and collected nine little green rep squares without me knowing

Again, a touch late with the closed bracket yesterday, but the whole bracket goes to the eliminated column: Blaze, The Dark Tower, Cell, The Colorado Kid, and Lisey's Story. With 15 spots left undetermined, Night Shift, 'Salem's Lot, Christine, The Drawing of the Three, and Skeleton Crew advance.

mae

The last bracket of the first round just went up, and one more closed. Thus, The Gunslinger, Four Past Midnight, The Dark Half, Under the Dome, and Just After Sunset were eliminated. Some real good ones here. And with only ten spots left undetermined, 11/22/63, Skeleton Crew, The Dead Zone, The Talisman, Duma Key, and Black House clinch a spot in Round 2.

Thanks to everyone who's made the event a success thus far, we're keeping our 30-ish participation level! :excited:

Looking at the list as it currently stands it looks like Firestarter will be making its debut in the second round after coming close the first three times and falling off last time:

2009: 32nd overall
2010: 31st overall
2012: 32nd overall
2014: 43rd overall

I am really happy because I actually like this one a lot and it never seems to get much respect.

Hey Mae,
Just curious if there is a reason Blockade Billy isn't included in the voting.

Surprised to see The Gunslinger eliminated. Never one of my favorites, but I thought others would like it enough to push it through.

mae
03-02-2018, 08:57 AM
I could be mistaken but this may be the first time we have only four DT novels in Round 2.

mae
03-02-2018, 10:38 AM
Yup, just checked. In 2009 and 2010 all seven novels made it. In 2012 there were six (sans Sons of Susannah; this was before The Wind Through the Keyhole). And in 2014 it was the same, but with Wind.

amd013
03-02-2018, 11:11 AM
Yeah the Gunslinger is the first elimination that I am disappointed to see eliminated. A few others that I am mildly disappointed, but with as much competition as there is, its not surprising.

There is only one book I am mildly disappointed will make it, and one book that very likely will make it, that I feel is unworthy. So in general quite pleased with the results so far (including
Firestarter likely making it).

The penultimate bracket has closed and Full Dark, No Stars, The Wind Through the Keyhole, Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and Doctor Sleep have been eliminated. Joyland, Mr. Mercedes, Firestarter, Needful Things, and Wizard and Glass make it into Round 2.

And yesterday the last bracket closed. Sorry, I was out last night and couldn't close the bracket and update the list, but here we go. Cujo, End of Watch, The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, Gwendy's Button Box, and Sleeping Beauties were the last to be eliminated. Shocked to see how low those last two ended up being. And Cujo just missed making it into Round 2 for the first time ever! The last five books to advance are Finders Keepers, Revival, Wolves of the Calla, Insomnia. and Desperation. This means the first two Hodges books both make it into the Top 30. Did not expect that.

Round 2 begins next week on the 13th!

Why is it that folks that have not read the book feel the need to post that fact and make it known to all? I mean if you haven't read the book what could you possibly contribute to the enterprise? Are these folks also voting?

St. Troy

I vote “never read,” and I suppose I do so in order to reflect that a portion of the readership here hasn’t gotten around to every title, but I’ve done so under the assumption that my non-numerical vote wasn’t dragging down the average - if I am dragging it down, let me know and I’ll refrain as I’m not trying to ruin anything for anyone else.

No, the never read votes have no effect in the actual rankings. It’s just so that’s eveyone can vote and also we can see which books are less read than others.

Why is it that folks that have not read the book feel the need to post that fact and make it known to all? I mean if you haven't read the book what could you possibly contribute to the enterprise? Are these folks also voting?
Why fret about it?

St. Troy, please keep voting. AFAIK, a "Never Read" vote does not affect the average.

Some people also vote "never read" even if they have read the book but it's been a really long time and they don't remember much, if any of the story. They don't want to give it a low score and drag the average down simply because they can't remember if they liked it or not.

Yes. It took me years to read it. The only way I could get through it was being stuck on a cruise at sea for 5 days with nothing else to read.
