Blood Meridian: or The Evening Redness in the West[/I] - Cormac McCarthy

One of my absolute favorites.

BM is dope for sure, but the no-quotation marks for character dialogue drove me nuts at first. I understand it's a stylistic choice or w/e, just not sure it really adds anything to the experience.

One of my absolute favorites.

I've been working my way through McCarthy over the past few years. Unfortunately I got stalled with this one, even though I was really enjoying it, due to work, being busy and travelling over the past few months. I am planning on starting over and reading it cover to cover.

1. House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski (3)

How did you read this? I have it on the shelf but the format is so weird that I wasn't sure how to read it. (Same reason I have yet to read S. by Doug Dorst)

1. The Man in the Picture - Susan Hill

I only made it through 30 books last year, so I have now set a goal of 40 books for this coming year. I've had House of Leaves on my bookshelf for a few years now. I've been dying to read it too, but I always seem to pick up another book instead.

This year was the year I've read the least amount of pages since I started keeping track pre-2006. Damn Lord of the Flies and Sleeping Beauties really messed me up. :arg:

Heather19

I tried to start Sleeping Beauties, but was having difficulty getting into it. I've heard some not so great things about it, so I think I'm going to try the audiobook instead. If I start a slow book, I'll never be able to read anything else

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't recommend it. Very slow, uninteresting characters, and needlessly long. I wasted 3 months of my reading year on that sucker. 3 months!

I slugged through it, reading the footnotes as I came to them. Reading the appendices when referred to them. I must say, I got very bogged down with this book. I read at least 3 other books while trying to get through this one. I didn’t hate it exactly. It was just a very laborious read. I know it has almost a cult following, but I think those fanatics are looking for incite that isn’t there. It was worthwhile, but I would never read it again.

Yes, his grammar and lack of punctuation is very frustrating. It took me a couple of books to get past it. All the Pretty Horses is my favorite so far.

Do you mean Leviathan Wakes series? I have the SP limited editions but haven't read them yet. I do love the show based on the books - The Expanse series.

I just started the last book Acceptance. The series is very different than I imagined and I like it. It's hard to explain without giving it away - I would give it a try.

I enjoyed the first book but have fallen off while reading the 2nd book two times now. I need to get back on the horse. Even though some folks have complained about not liking the other 2 books in the series, I have kind of liked the Southern Reach series so far...

I’m also going through the DT series on audiobook. Although I’ve read the books many times, this is my first time through the audiobooks. Frank Muller is an amazing narrator, is he not? He is masterful at changing his voice to capture the different characters, and his cadence is mesmerizing. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m disappointed that he was not able to read them all. If I remember correctly, you were not a fan of W & G. I think the audiobook might help to change your mind on that.

I'm actually not a fan of any of the DT books, aside for The Wastelands. Honestly, they never really interested me based on the premise, but being a member of the site for so long, a few years ago I decided to go through and read them all to see what all the fuss was about. I did all the audiobooks because I knew I would never finish if I read them. And I only re-listened to this one because it was the book a few months ago for a SK bookclub that I go to.

Becca, how was Borne? It's been on my list for awhile now to read.

Loved it. It's really wacky but that's what I liked about it.

A cautionary tale with a gigantic flying bear, mutated children, and biotech gone awry, set in a post apocalyptic city and the people trying to survive there.

I haven't finished a single book this year. I've started a few but haven't completed one yet. My mind is just too distracted by other things and my eyesight is worsening. I hope I can get back into the swing of things soon.

Oh I forgot! I did complete one...

What about audiobooks Tommy?

I've tried a few but it just wasn't the same experience for me. I didn't get the same feeling of accomplishment for lack of a better word. In the years to come, I will probably have to rely more and more on audiobooks. I will just have to adapt.

I don’t see anything about what the requirements are for listing books. Are we just posting our favorite books we’ve read in 2018?

Most folks make a list of ALL the books we have read this year. Kind of like a running tally.

For a good entry into Sanderson you can start in 1 of 3 places.
Elantris: easy fun read. Only one book to see how you like his style.
Mistborn: 3 books to jump right in with. Great story and really feels like you are reading one long book.
Stormlight Archive(3 books so far): these are epic fantasy but holy shit is the world building good. so far he has 3 novels out but he plans on it being 10+.

I actually like the way Jackson writes but I thought the way the characters acted and reacted to each other was odd.

“The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis

I've been thinking about picking this up; how did you like it?

It was excellent, but a difficult read for me. I found myself having to read some parts a few times to fully grasp the meaning. That’s very likely my own inexperience at play, though. Yet, it’s also difficult because it can really hit home in terms of the many ways you’ve failed yourself. And you don’t have to be a Christian or even a very spiritual person to get it. I highly recommend it and I’ll certainly be reading it again because there’s just no way I understood everything.

It was ok. I didn't really know what to expect and I've heard great such great things about Bird Box (but haven't gotten my copy from Dark Regions yet), that I wanted to be blown away and I wasn't.

Liking Three-Body so far. Not what I expected, in a good way, mostly.

Usher's Passing is very good - a bit like Matthew Corbett in tone, but quite a different subject matter. A cross between an Edwardian family drama, a mystery novel, with a dash of 80s suspense. Definitely among the better of his pre-Nightbird works.

And yes, I picked up the CD edition. I don't actually have a hard copy of this novel, just the Kindle and (just released) audiobook.

I really enjoyed Sharp Objects. I'd put it as my favorite of hers.

Just looked up the synopsis of the other book, and it sounds similar. I was a bit disappointed in it. I thought it would be more about ways of letting go, but it seemed more about his life. And honestly, I listened to the audio book this summer, and remember very little of it. So I guess it made a big impression on me

Becca how was Vox? I just bought that one. Hoping to get to it by the end of the year but not sure if I will.

I loved it. There were a few issues with the ending but overall, very good and disturbing - especially if you are female. A good read if you are a fan of Handmaid's Tale.

I was able to read it in a few days if you decide to go for it .
