Thanks for posting this Jerome, and for everyone's comments. I wanted to respond yesterday but I was actually at the letterpress printer all day working on this project. I'm very excited about it and my new adventure into publishing. More details will be provided soon.

It's interesting how this all evolved like Dan says. I have been planning for, and working on this for a long time now, and I'm really pleased that it's finally at the point where I can make some announcements. I'm grateful to you all because part of what motivated me is the enthusiasm you've shown for the projects I've worked on. So thank you.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Josh. If I'm understanding your question, yes I will be publishing higher limitation runs on a numbered edition, but still fairly limited in the whole scheme of things. As to your other question, after some discussion on this point, previous custom bound owners will have right of first refusal on the same letter for this publication.

THE EYES OF THE DRAGON ART PORTFOLIO

FEATURING ILLUSTRATIONS BY
David Palladini
FROM THE NOVEL BY
Stephen King
We are excited to announce the publication of
The Eyes of the Dragon Art Portfolio.
The Eyes of the Dragon is a novel by Stephen King that was first published in a 1984 limited edition via King’s personal imprint, Philtrum Press, and in a trade edition by Viking in 1987. Originally written for his daughter Naomi, the book is a work of fantasy.

Artist David Palladini was commissioned to create a series of new illustrations for the trade edition. Mr. Palladini created twenty-four original illustrations that were rendered in pencil and ink on Bienfang velour paper.

This is the first official art portfolio to be published featuring the illustrations from the Viking trade edition of The Eyes of the Dragon. It also marks the 30th anniversary of the original Viking publication of the book.

ABOUT THE EDITION

The portfolio is published in two editions, both of which are signed by David Palladini: a numbered edition of three hundred copies and a lettered edition of twenty-six copies.

Both editions include twenty-two black & white illustrations and two color illustrations. An afterword written exclusively for this edition by David Palladini is included in both editions. A previously unpublished drawing and a reproduction of the only extant copy of the Viking Title page illustration, hand-colored by David Palladini, are included in both editions.

The text has been set in Waters Titling and Warnock Pro typefaces and letterpress printed from photopolymer plates by Norman Clayton of Classic Letterpress in Ojai, California on his 18” x 23” Heidelberg Cylinder press. The text pages are printed on 100% cotton paper which has the feel of fabric. The papers used in these editions are environmentally responsible and acid free.

NUMBERED EDITION

The numbered portfolio measures 10” x 15½”. The illustrations are printed on Mohawk Superfine and are housed in a clamshell box of Italian book cloth over archival boards. Publication price: $295.

LETTERED EDITION

The lettered portfolio measures 12” x 18”. The illustrations are printed on 100% cotton paper. The portfolio is accompanied by a photogravure print that is numbered and signed by the artist. The photogravure was made by Jon Goodman at his studio in Florence, Massachusetts. The print has been hand-pulled on Somerset Velvet 100% cotton mould made paper from St. Cuthbert’s Mill, England by Jon Goodman. Each print has been embossed with the printer’s mark. The illustrations are housed in a clamshell box of Japanese book cloth over archival boards. Publication price: $795.

Publication will coincide with the release of the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling epic, The Dark Tower. Two characters from The Eyes of the Dragon have a brief cameo appearance in The Drawing of the Three, the second book in the Dark Tower series, and the novel is set in the Kingdom of Delain, a location that is mentioned in the Dark Tower series a number of times.

The portfolio will be available for pre-order in March 2017.
Publication is scheduled for Summer 2017.

Honestly I am even impressed just looking at the prospectus (http://suntup.press/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Palladini_Prospectus.pdf) it matches the feel of ETOD so well it looks like it belongs in the book.

Thanks. I've been planning this for a long time. Of course I encourage you to support the new CD book. Spending money on our obsessions is an occupational hazard and there never seems to be a good time to spend money! Anyway, thanks for all who support the small press. There will be a payment plan as usual. Peace.

I love and hate payment plans. It seems just when I'm done paying a book, or two or three, off, another one, or two or three, start. I'm not complaining, just stating a fact of life. Also, the longer a payment plan that is accepted, the better it is for me. I know that's not as good a thing for the publisher though. Hopefully, I'll be able to take these portfolios, providing they don't immediately sell out.

That's funny. I'm the same way. I've been running my fingers over that print every chance I get. It's letterpress printed so you can feel the letters in the paper and the paper itself is 100% cotton and it feels so good!

I'm planning a video on the various stages of production. I have some raw footage of the signature page printing which I'll share soon.

Ah; the wonderful world of book porn, replete with ribbon, vellum, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, deckled edges, gauffered edges, fore-edge paintings, slipcases, solander boxes, buckram, embossing, acid-free paper, leather, stamping...in the end, we all just want to make a connection, right? Count me in.

So I thought I would share this story with you.

In the early days of Art Portfolio project, we were missing a lot of original illustrations. David suspected that they were lost or destroyed over the years as he had not seen them in a long time.

When I would go over there to visit or meet about the portfolio, I couldn't help but notice that there was a large stack of paintings and framed artwork on the floor leaning up against the wall. Every now and then, I would ask David if perhaps the other originals were buried in there somewhere. He would usually respond by saying he doubted it, then we would move onto other topics.

Sometimes I would offer to go through them for him, so we would walk over to the stack of paintings, and when we saw how many there were and the effort it would take to wade through them, it just seemed too arduous so we would sit back down and continue our discussion.

Then one day, I was over there and David was in another room looking for something I needed for the launch video. I was sitting at the dining room table and the paintings were on my right. Without putting much thought into it, I stood up and walked over to the stack. I started to flip through them, moving one painting at a time against my right leg so that I could get a look at what was under each one.

I kept going until I was close to the back, with the last few leaning against the wall. My legs were aching, my back was starting to protest because of the odd way I had to position myself in order to work my way through the artwork.

Then just as I was almost at the end, I came across a heavy cardstock sheet covered with grey paper. I recognized that paper from one of the originals I had seen before and I knew this was it. I grabbed the sheet, lifted up the paper covering, and there in front of me was an original illustration from the book.

It was about this time that David came back into the room and saw what I was up to. "You won't believe what I just found", I said. He was amazed. And I kept going. Right behind that one was another one! And behind that was yet another.

That day I discovered eleven original illustrations. It all felt very dream-like. The highlight of this discovery was that one of the most iconic illustrations from the book, the title page illustration, was among them.

It is a good thing these were discovered, because who can tell where they might have ultimately ended up. They will now be well cared for.

Enjoy!

All the illustrations have a translucent sheet covering them where the art department had written certain technical requirements with regard to the reproduction of the artwork.

Larger images can be seen here (suntup.press/eyes-dragon-original-illustrations/), and also include shots of the translucent sheets.

The illustrations have held up well considering they are more than 30 years old and have traveled to several countries over the past three decades. The translucent sheets show the most wear, but the artwork is still in excellent condition.

Pencil and ink on Bienfang velour paper. Landscape illustrations measure 24" x 18". Portrait illustrations paper measures 12 1/2" x 19" with the artwork at 11" x 17".

Paul, does this mean the illustrations in the portfolio are directly reproduced from these originals?

Simon, yes that is correct. There are several stages these illustrations will go through when reproducing them. We create an archive scan of the image using a high-end drum scanner at a very high resolution. This produces a massive file and if you zoomed in, you could see down to the fibers of the paper.

Then the artwork is digitally restored by a professional art restorer. This involves cleaning up smudges, spots, dirt or any imperfections. It is zoomed in on a large display, and the entire surface of the image is inspected and restored where necessary. We also make certain adjustments to the midtones to get the best possible balance between the whites and shades of grey in the black & white illustrations. It's all very interesting, and I have some clips of these stages which I may put into a video.

All that, together with the larger print size and the new technologies at our disposal, will result in a reproduction that will be the best we have seen of this artwork.

I did not know until fairly recently that David illustrated that poster. It came out one day in a conversation we were having. I'm not too surprised about the lack of a credit. From other stories I've heard, that sort of thing isn't too uncommon. He did tell an interesting story about the woman in the poster, Isabelle Adjani. In the first draft, the woman did not look enough like the actress, so he had to redraw her.

Point taken. Due to my post (regardless of humor or humorless; depending on one's POV) I'd request that Paul draw another name if by some faint chance that were to happen. I wouldn't want to compromise Paul's integrity in anyway. Although, for the record, IMO, Paul's integrity is beyond reproach.

Do you have a wish date release of the Firestarter?

Yes. I actually just got off the phone with Jim who is making the boards. I don't typically set official 'release dates' for the custom bound books, but right now the Firestarters should be done around July as well. The boards need to be air dried and not kiln dried, so the drying process takes longer. We're getting there. Everything else is lined up and ready to go.

For those who missed this on Facebook, I thought it might be of interest. Here are some pictures of the plate that was made for the limited edition photogravure print that is included in the lettered edition.

A copper plate is made from the artwork and is inked so that the etched cells of varying depths in the plate are filled with the dense ink. The ink is then wiped from the surface and the plate is placed on the bed of an etching press. Dampened paper is laid on the plate, covered with printing felts, and passed between the rollers of the press under heavy pressure. The felts are then removed and the paper is lifted from the plate. The image in ink has then been transferred from the plate to the paper.

Photogravure is a true continuous-tone ink printing technique. The image is made of a layer of ink whose thickness varies continuously according to the depth of tone of the image. When viewed under magnification, a photogravure print is seen to be in three-dimensional relief, with a thicker layer of ink in the shadows and dark tones and thinner layers in the light tones and highlights.

I couldn't resist doing a proof for the portfolio. I had some fun with this. The proof is designed to look like the old-style proofs from back in the day. Right down to the stapled publisher slip, and spiral bound pages. And of course, the covers were made to look like they were all beat up with stains and folds.

At first I thought, how can you do a proof for an art portfolio, but there was a need for some sort of rough mockup so we could determine the best order for the content, and have something I could actually look at prior to publication. Aside from that, there was a need for what advance review copies are traditionally used for, to send to media/reviewers, etc. And of course, proofing.

I decided to also include swatches of the materials used in both editions. Right down to the paper, and the covering materials for the boxes. It also has some of the special translucent/vellum paper being used in the actual portfolios.

Special thanks to Becca69 for your amazing design work on the covers and publisher slip!

I love Paul's books and portfolio, and of course I'm a huge Proofs/ARCs fan, but I was all set to argue AGAINST adding the proofs to the list. Why? Because technically, while they are publications by King, they're not actually published BY King. After all, if we do it once, where would we draw the line? Then I said to myself, "Self, check the catalog before mouthing off" (always sage advice). So I pop open the Manuscripts, Proofs and ARCs section, and what is the VERY FIRST listing?

Fear Itself. Not by King. Hmmmm.

We seem to have a precedence.

A little more checking also shows Night Visions 5 and The Killer Inside Me.

Hmmm.

I am going to play Devil's Advocate here (As much as "I LOVE" Paul's Eyes of the Dragon art portfolio proofs they DO NOT belong in the King Manuscripts, Proofs & ARC section with their own listing as they contain no written words by Mr. King. As for George at C-Springs argument FOR...His examples Do Not Hold Water.
#1 Fear Itself contains the foreward "ON BEING A BRAND NAME" written by King.
http://imageshack.com/a/img922/7942/V1DeHF.jpg
#2 Night Visions 5 has 3 stories written by King The Reploids, Sneakers & Dedication.
http://imageshack.com/a/img922/7160/z0lllQ.jpg
#3 The Killer Inside Me has Kings introduction WARNING! WARNING! Hitch-hikers May Be Escaped LUNATICS!
http://imageshack.com/a/img922/2346/OoPDlV.jpg
WITH NO WRITTEN WORDS BY MR. KING THEY ARE NOT A KING PROOF.IMHO
But I also see no reason why they can't be added to the Discussion section of TEOTD proof post.

King did write the title. (well except for the words "art" and "portfolio" )
 King's title for this book was "THE NAPKINS" so was it King or the publisher that changed the title to The Eyes of the Dragon?:rolleyes2:

As for George at C-Springs argument FOR...His examples Do Not Hold Water.

Hold on now, I didn't say I was arguing FOR inclusion (hence the Hmmmmmmmmms). What I pointed out was that a precedence has already been set for inclusion of non-King publications by the three books already listed.

Also, your use of foreward versus foreword automatically gets you flamed ... pet peeve! :emot-flame:

My two cents: when I created the proofs catalog the intention was to keep it limited to King's novels and collections (just like John's master list in the Proofs thread). But in all fairness, I don't think this was explicitly stated anywhere.

Anyway, others are maintaining the proofs catalog now so I'll let them decide

No horse in this race, but there is an Artist's Proof of The Waste Lands Portfolio published by Grant, and that's not listed in the Proofs section.

Maybe there should be a separate section for official portfolios? Of course would need to determine what makes a portfolio official, but something like it was paired with the book when sold (e.g., CD double day years) or the artist is involved (Suntup EOTD).

Just an idea.

Suntup Editions Exclusive: As a bonus addition to The Eyes of the Dragon Limited Edition Portfolios featuring the artwork of David Palladini, Suntup Editions in collaboration with Mark Strong of Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., is proud to announce the inclusion of a separate biographical book to both editions of the art portfolios.

The concise biography was written as a ‘fan tribute’ to the artist by Mark Strong, from almost nine years of compiled information about David Palladini’s personal life and career as an artist up to the present-day. The introduction, written by Mark, speaks of the serendipitous beginning of their friendship in 2008 with a simple phone call from David, which became his sole inspiration for writing the biography. The book, aptly titled Palladini, will include a 70-page biography, as well as over 60 full-color reproductions of artwork by David Palladini, including some of his best-known illustrations and never-before-published fine art. The perfect addition to the portfolios for Stephen King collectors and Palladini fans alike. Included free with all Portfolio orders.

What a day! I'm busy with something you're going to love. Working day and night... more later.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm pleased that you all like this new bonus we're including. I discovered this bio, which has never been in print, and felt it was the perfect opportunity to take a look at David's life and art outside of EOTD. Also to give Mark Strong the attention he deserves. He spent a long time painstakingly researching this. It has been fully updated and expanded for this print edition. Adding the book has been a lot of extra work, but I'm really pleased it is being done.

What's really nice is that I discovered some artwork of David's that has never been published, so I'm including some of those here for the first time.

I never thought of this. I don't see it being an issue on the Lettered edition as there aren't that many to sign. I can also see if he would be willing to sign the books for the Numbered as well.

BTW, this started out as a 32 page booklet. Now it's 70 pages.
