I thought it was kinda overdue that we have a dedicated Netflix thread where we could discuss everything to do with the original series, movies, documentaries, as well as other good stuff on it. I know a lot of us here use Netflix constantly, so I felt it would be nice to have a home for all the discussion about what's new with Netflix.

As of today, just to set things off, lots of good older movies were added:

Boogie Nights (1997): http://www.netflix.com/title/1180077
Braveheart (1995): http://www.netflix.com/title/60000540
Caddyshack (1980): http://www.netflix.com/title/343044

The Man with One Red Shoe (1985): http://www.netflix.com/title/70003679
Menace II Society (1993): http://www.netflix.com/title/754174
Ocean's Twelve (2004): http://www.netflix.com/title/70011211
The Parent Trap (1961): http://www.netflix.com/title/60020337
The Shining (1980): http://www.netflix.com/title/959008
Superman: The Movie (1978): http://www.netflix.com/title/60011739

V for Vendetta (2005): http://www.netflix.com/title/70039175
Vanilla Sky (2001): http://www.netflix.com/title/60021786

And a few good recent ones:

Great idea to start a thread for Netflix. I recently finished two documentaries, Eddie - Strongman and Hip-Hop Evolution. Enjoyed them both.

I cancelled U-Verse and watch Netflix and Amazon on my Roku for almost everything. My daughter (12) and I are watching How I Met Your Mother right now. We've watched through The Office, Scrubs, Malcolm in the Middle, Friends, Last Man Standing, and several other shorter series. I've watched several of the Netflix originals and think they are well made.

Netflix has some great programming. We have Roku. We gave up Directv almost a year ago after my bill went up to nearly $220. Now we have Playstation Vue, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Much cheaper!

Every time I talk to friends, I tell them to watch a movie on Netflix and they're like, "Oh, I don't watch movies on Netflix. I only watch TV."

I still get the DVDs in the mail.

I'm noticing the younger the person, the more likely they are to use Netflix for TV instead of movies.

It won't be eventually. Within 5 years you'll be paying just as much for your OTT subscriptions.

My friend just gave me his account/password for Netflix so I can watch Black Mirror. Of course, I watched Season 4 of House of Cards first and now I'm watching some Mad Men since my best friend lend the first few seasons to his dad and I can't watch them right now grumble grumble. I haven't checked out what's on there yet, but I think I'll watch Braveheart for the first time in a decade.

Glad someone else thinks Vanilla Sky is a good movie. It's one of my favourites but everyone seems to hate it :/

That's the messed up part. You have to "buy" all different varieties to view everything you would like to see. You figure cable would drop their prices to compete. They don't. Instead, they just charge more.

Is downloading from Netflix only an American thing? My friend loves House of Cards but cancelled his Netflix since he got an android box, but he says House of Cards new episodes haven't come on there yet for whatever reason. This way I could download it and give him the files.

I don't think you can actually pass the files around when downloading through Netflix. I "think" it's an in app only thing and it locks / hides the files away in files only the app can read. Otherwise I don't think they would be able to get away with it for security / rights reasons.

I have Netflix DVD subscription. Virtually any film is available on DVD but the streaming selection is small in comparison. If all you like to watch are TV shows, recent films, and commercially lukewarm back catalog movies then streaming is all you need. However, I want more out of my Netflix. For shits a giggles a few years ago, I took my Netflix DVD queue of about 200 titles and looked to see what I could stream. Less than 10. Most of my queue is not the newest blockbuster, but older films, esoteric films, old esoteric Asian films, etc.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was saying how I had just watched some movie or another on Netflix, and someone tried to convince me it wasn't available. I told them it sure was--they sent the DVD right to my house. The reaction I got amused me. (DVD? Netflix still has DVDs???)

I hear that all the time as well. I usually have to go into an explanation that you can get DVDs sent to you from netflix. I don't know why people have forgotten that it started this way. Was it really that long ago? I won't ever get rid of the dvd portion. Compared to that, what you can find streaming is so minimal.

Agreed on the streaming vs. DVD thing. Streaming is great for those people who just want the Netflix original content, but the movie selection is slim pickings.

Divemaster, do you collect DVDS? A lot of those you can find on DVD for a buck or two.

I do have a nice DVD collection. About 300 U.S. movies and 500 non-U.S. (mostly Asian). However, for the most part I don't purchase random or unseen movies, even for a buck or two. If I've seen and liked the movie, I'll pick up the DVD version, especially if it has commentary and other bonus features. Sometimes I'll go ahead and buy the movie unseen if I know I'll like it, and the DVD is a special edition. For example, I bought the latest Star Trek DVD unseen b/c of my enjoyment of the first two films and good word of mouth.

The exception is that a lot of the Korean movies I *have* to buy blind b/c the movies are never released in the U.S. These DVDs are often Region 3 and not available for rental either. So I pays my money and takes my chances. Similar for a lot of Chinese/Hong Kong DVDs, but those are about $5 or less, whereas most of the Korean ones are $20 or more.

So, if any of the movies in my current Netflix queue I end up really liking, I'll buy the DVD later. I recently did this with the Japanese film HOUSE, which was one of the trippiest/weirdest movies I've ever seen. Nice bonus features on the DVD as well.

I had no clue It Follows was streaming. It's never popped up for me, which is weird with all the horror films I like. That's one thing that annoys me about the streaming version, is that all the films that pop up in the different lists are all the same. You pretty much have to put in the film you want to see and see if they have it. Which can get annoying when you put in a bunch of films that they don't have. They need to get better about organizing films and being able to search through the whole catalog of what's available.

Just finished watching The Ranch with Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson and Sam Elliot. It's still odd hearing them combine the use of the word "fuck" with a laugh track but the story that drives the show is pretty good. The 3 guys really play well off of each other.

The first season ended in a bit of a cliffhanger but I've read that they've confirmed season 2 will be coming sometime this year.

I posted about this some time back or responded to a post, I don't remember. I agree. I loved that documentary not only because it was really well made, but also because I experienced it all firsthand. I grew up in South Africa and I was there at that time and place and I was impacted by his music just as described in the documentary. When they said it was the soundtrack of our youth, it really was.

I should have clarified my question. I was interested in streaming only. I cancelled my DVD plan a few years ago. My wife couldn't seem to ever return movies and I found the cost wasteful.

Could be. I haven't seen the movie either. I was just responding to Shannons comment. In the trailer it shows the main characters, I think, shoving and pulling off the costumes of the white students. Doesn't seem like the right way to go about discussing an issue/problem but the characters are young and that is what young people tend to do.

You can tell all that from the 35 second trailer of a new satirical TV show? WOW! LOL!

Considering that Dear White People is based entirely on the 2014 movie of the same name, it should follow that the movie is also racist...

From the site consensus at Rotten Tomatoes and scoring 91% based on 117 reviews: "Dear White People adds a welcome new voice to cinema's oft-neglected discussion of race, tackling its timely themes with intelligence, honesty, and gratifyingly sharp wit."

The movie's director, Justin Simien, won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and Best Screenplay at the 2015 Spirit Awards.

So yeah, extremely racist.

This isn't humorous or a quirky metaphor for race relations. This is race-baiting hidden inside a movie that people can nod their heads at while thinking highly of themselves for having someone else agree with them.

And your "WOW! LOL!" smiley face bullshit leads me to believe that your Google-found information is the extent of your contribution here.

Yea but neither of those things actually have anything to do with the show. I don't even know what that first one is. The second one was just in bad taste by MTV and totally misses the point. No one is saying that the attitude you are describing doesn't exist, mostly we're saying that this show / the movie by the same name aren't about that. I honestly don't think we would be having this conversation if it had been called anything other than "Dear White People".

The problem here, is that by your own admission, you have not watched the movie (and probably didn't even know it existed until I posted about it). Ranting about race baiting and anti white sentiments without actually having watched either the movie or TV show, tells me more about your own personal insecurities regarding race than anything else.

And your "WOW! LOL!" smiley face bullshit leads me to believe that your Google-found information is the extent of your contribution here.

I don't need Google to find information about this. Unlike yourself, I have watched the movie, several times in fact - and IMHO, it deserved the accolades it received.

I'm so sorry. I apologize. I wasn't aware that to have an opinion, one must have sat through Dear White People. But you're right, I'm insecure about ... something. Whether it's my race, or the race of others. That's gotta be it, right? Because there's NO WAY that one can see something negative in the TV trailer for Dear White People. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the main character talking down to an entire race. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the main character telling an entire race what NOT to be on Halloween. There's nothing wrong with telling ANYONE what NOT to be on Halloween. There's nothing wrong with saying that only blacks can dress up like blacks. There's nothing wrong with portraying white people as rich and privileged douchebag racists that dress in blackface because they're entitled. There's nothing wrong with black people storming into a party to rip the costumes off of people, as well as destroying their property.

This is the trailer, pretty much shot for shot. Some may call it satire. I don't. And if it were just a show without a message, then it would be just that. But it's not. It IS a show with a message. And that message is (from the TRAILER) that if you're white, you're wrong.

More irony. By calling me a "moron" for pointing out the absurdity of your rash claims regarding a movie and TV show that you know very little about, and refusing to continue the discourse because I hold a different (and informed) opinion of said movie/TV show - not only reveals your inability to put forward a coherent and reasoned counter-argument, but also reaffirms the obvious fact that you lack the empathy, moral imagination or analytical skills to attempt even a basic understanding of the views from people that disagree with you.

The fact that you ask for other people to discuss the Dear White People trailer with you, in order to avoid debating me further because you are losing the argument badly, speaks volumes.

The fact that you feel threatened, marginalised even, by a 35 second trailer featuring a woman of colour (politely) asking not to be mocked, speaks volumes.

The hilarity is that even now, you still fail to realise that your ill-informed and incessant rants about "white guilt" and "race baiting" reiterates why Dear White People exists in the first place.

But I'm the "moron". LOL!

We can also discuss a crap-ton of other series and movies Netflix has, too.

FUCK NETFLIX! I'm done. I cancelled it today.

Santa Clarita Diet portrays white people as blood thirsty cannibals. Boycott this shit and cancel your subscription. Anybody that has a Smart TV with Netflix built in should punch it in the HDMI port.

I'm with you Shannon - this era of "white guilt" is absolutely insane. I have no clue where this shit even started.

I have to agree. I always laugh at how socially acceptable a movie is like say "White Chicks"... But then I wonder why a white person cannot go out dressed in what is now "Black face" for Halloween... White Face - ALLOWED but Black Face - YOUR A RACIST. Imagine a movie making fun of black women called "Black Chicks"? And White Guilt is a real thing... and it is everywhere. There is now so much racism towards white people it blows me away.

Br!an
02-17-2017, 03:21 PM
It's not racist, it's the opposite of racist. It's supposed to make YOU (if you're white, of course) feel like a racist.

White guilt bullshit. I don't have a Netflix account, and even if I did I wouldn't cancel it, but this is a definite miss.
I don't think that's the objective.

How do know how it's trying to make you feel if you haven't even seen it?

I don't think that's the objective either.

I never saw the movie. I watched both trailers.

I'm a middle aged white man, and I don't have a problem with the show. I probably won't watch it, since it isn't something that interests me, but it doesn't bother me in the least.

I really don't see what there is to be upset about.

It certainly isn't a good reason to cancel Netflix. Netflix is awesome!

One tv series that is a Netflix original series that I have binge watched all the way to the end is Hemlock Grove. I like how they mixed in the old school movie monsters into actual characters(Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster) but did it without you knowing they are those characters. The series is based on a book of the same name by Brian McGreevy.

I was just kidding.

Stranger Things has a very strong King vibe. The creators have cited King as major influence. The same for E.T. There are some early scenes that are literally mirror images of E.T. Especially the scene outside with the shed. There's a strong Goonies vibe as well and pretty much everything 80's. It's why I love the show so much.

Please, correct me if I am wrong, but other than a few "original programs" (i.e. House of Cards, Stranger Things & Narco's to name a couple) I just do not see the value in having a "Netflix" subscription. Of course, I have the full monty of "Movie Channels" from "Directv". I use my daughters account to log in. If I am missing something, please educate me. Otherwise, like most "alternative providers" I don't see the monthly commitment value.

You're missing a massive amount of original programming that they offer. There's so much I've been meaning to watch but can't catch up. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Jessica Jones, The OA, Love, The Crown, Orange is the New Black, Sense8, Bloodline, Master of None. I'm probably forgetting a bunch too.

Just because these programs don't interest you, doesn't mean Netflix isn't offering good value in the eyes of many.

Class dismissed.

Depends on what you are looking for, Bill. I don't care much about "original programming," at least, not as a must-watch first run items. TV shows by and large do not interest me. I have, on occasion, watched shows after-the-fact if I see good word of mouth and the show seems within my areas of interest. For example, I watched DVDs of Breaking Bad and The Wire after the shows' runs were over and enjoyed them.

I use Netflix (DVD subscription) to watch all sorts of esoteric films--especially older and/or foreign films. A lot of really offbeat stuff. A vast majority are not available with streaming or Hulu or subscription services. At least not to my knowledge (maybe I am wrong on this?). I'm sure you can find almost anything on the internet if you look around, but I'm content to get the DVDs sent to my house and watch a double feature of, say, Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom and Female Prisoner 701 Scorpion one night and then Kurosawa's Drunken Angel and The Bad Sleep Well a couple of days later. I get a constant stream of DVDs delivered to my house for $12 a month. As my current queue has 196 titles in it, I'll never run out of things to watch that are of great interest to me. I consider this an amazing monthly value.

Yea I don't really get it either. It doesn't have the same level of action as say Daredevil, but it's still pretty good. Character development feels a little thin in places, but for the most part that's pretty much the status quo with these Marvel Netflix shows. Overall I like it better than Luke Cage and the 2nd half of Daredevil season 2. I still like Jessica Jones and the rest of Daredevil more though. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Defenders later this year.

I'm not sure why people hated Bernthal in The Walking Dead so much. I felt the show was really lacking something after he left it. I think people just didn't like his head rubbing mannerism and just wrote him off. Bernthal was great in The Walking Dead, and everything else I've seen him in.

Yea I don't really care one way or the other about Bernthal (never really liked Walking Dead), but you're right he killed it as The Punisher. Which I think is why the first half of Daredevil Season 2 was so good. It's the second half of the season where the focus shifts to the Elektra story line where the season really fell off for me.

http://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/863705-netflix-greenlights-2-hour-finale-for-sense8-to-premiere-in-2018

Earlier this month, word came down that Netflix was cancelling the hit series Sense8 after two seasons on the streaming platform. Fans began to campaign for the series to return in one form or another, but things remained grim after Netflix revealed they wouldn’t be bringing it back despite fan campaigns.

Now, series co-creator Lana Wachowski has taken to the official Sense8 Twitter account to reveal the series will return for one last hurrah.

“Improbably, unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life,” she writes. “It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix’s (believe me, they love the show as much as we do but the numbers have always been challenging) to announce that there will be another two hour special released next year. After that… if this experience has taught me anything, you NEVER know.’

“Thank you all. Now let’s go find out what happens to Wolfgang.”

What are you hoping to see in a Sense8 finale? Sound off in the comments below!

From Lana Wachowski, Grant Hill and J. Michael Straczynski, Sense8 is centered around eight characters, from different parts of the world, who experience a violent vision, and soon find themselves mentally connected by the experience. They become connected, able to see and talk to each other as though they were in the same place, with access to each other’s deepest secrets. Not only must the eight adapt to this new ability and to each other, they must figure out why their lives are now in jeopardy. In Season 2, dark forces continue to track the cluster of eight connected characters. The sensates will learn more about BPO, the secret organization searching for their cluster and others like them, and will work to protect themselves from this organization that is out to hunt and kill them.

The series stars Toby Onwumere, Tina Desai, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Jamie Clayton, Tuppence Middleton, Donna Bae, Brian J. Wright, Max Riemel and Terrence Mann.

Okja - a Netflix original. Wow. Not sure how to review this one. One part kid's movie, one part cautionary tale, one part totally grotesque (not for the kiddies). One thing's for sure, it's a thought provoking look at the meat-producing food industry. Be prepared for some some over-the-top performances from Tilda Swinton (plays twins), and Jake Gyllenhaal (animal tv host). In the end I really was moved by it. 8/10.
