I completely blanked. Thankfully, Pablo reminded me.

Also, I just saw the Fences trailer and it's one of those trailers where you can give Oscars out just by watching a performance. Denzel knocked the shit out of that trailer.

That's the best part of Oscar season. Debating who should have been nominated. I still think Jake Gyllenhaal got robbed for not getting nominated for Nightcrawler.

The problem with debating who should have been nominated is its actors making the nominations. It's their personal opinion too. It's all personal opinion. There are plenty of great performances left out in the rain every year. that happens when you can only highlight 5. Sure he deserved to be nominated. He was great. The biggest travesty that year was Redmayne winning. Biographical performances beating out better original performances is a big hang up when it comes to academy voting. I find the Best Actor/Actress awards have been pretty poorly voted upon for years. At least the supporting awards tend to go to the right people. I kind of gave up caring about the big 2 acting Oscars and Best Picture awhile ago. Sometimes the right people win, but it's usually the actresses as I find there is often a bigger divide in their performances. Larsen, Blanchette, and Lawrence were all runaway choices and deservedly so. 2014 an 2010 had the strongest fields for Best Actress this decade. The others didn't have much depth.

I live near a 22 screen theater and they only play mainstream films most of the time. I checked and Manchester and Loving are playing in New Haven, which is 25 minutes away. It's pretty much right on the Yale campus in downtown New Haven. The problem is I don't feel like paying 15 bucks for parking.

Mattrick

Mine gets lots of mainstream films too, but they make a point to play numerous smaller market titles, especially during awards season. They usually re-release oscar contenders in the slower winter season around oscar time too. They also played a new Canadian movie for a week or two about every month.

Not cool:

http://www.theverge.com/2016/12/14/13957246/arrival-manchester-silence-academy-awards-original-score-disqualification

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released a list of 145 films that will be eligible for this year’s Oscar for Best Original Score. That list doesn’t include Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Arrival, which has an original score by Jóhann Jóhannsson.

The decision to disqualify Arrival was unanimous, Variety reports, due to the fact that it contains some borrowed music, including pieces of Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight,” that are played at pivotal moments at the start and end of the film. The Academy’s music branch says most voters can’t be expected to differentiate between these unoriginal pieces and Jóhannsson’s work. That decision is in keeping with an eligibility guideline that says a score can be disqualified if it’s “diluted by the use of pre-existing music.”

While the decision is understandable, it’s a bit of a shame — Arrival has a stunning score that’s also integral to the film’s broader sound design. Jóhannsson has been nominated for the Academy Award twice before, for his work on Villeneuve’s Sicario last year and James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything in 2014.

Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, which has a mostly original score composed by Lesley Barber, also features several classical music compositions and was disqualified on the same basis. When reached for comment via email Barber told The Verge, “In the making of this film, our director decided early on to use certain pieces of music from the classical repertoire as part of the music blend in the film. While I understand that this might be confusing to Academy members in their consideration of what is mine, it was obviously not the basis upon which music was chosen for the film. While I accept the Academy's decision, I also support my director’s decision to use these pieces and I’m also very proud of the substantial contribution (referenced correctly in many reviews) that the original score made to the film as well.”

The Verge is among the group of publications that Barber references here, and in his review of Manchester by the Sea, Chris Plante noted that “Lesley Barber’s operatic score supports the cast’s performances, mercifully turning up the soundtrack dial to cover a couple excruciating scenes that would otherwise play out as a cacophony of bloodcurdling, scenery-chewing screams.”

Martin Scorsese’s Silence, the score for which was written by Kim Allen Kluge and Kathryn Kluge, was also disqualified.

Jóhannsson was reached for comment, but had not responded at the time of publication.

What time are the nominations released? They've done it around noon in the past. just wondering if I need to skip class that day to watch them as I hate not watching it.

Best picture is obviously between Moonlight and La La Land. Moonlight deserves the award because its a smaller movie that's impactful and delicately made, and while La La Land would win and I'd be just as happy, it's the sort of movie you'd expect to win, which almost devalues its win.

Stone and Gosling are shoe ins for best actor/actress, though Casey Affleck might take Goslings statue away. I think Naome Harris deserves supporting actress for Moonlight. She's so good in it. I'd vote for Foster as supporting actor. I actually haven't seen a role otherwise that astounded me in terms of instant oscar buzz. Probably some great performances I haven't seen yet.

Best score will be between Moonlight and La La Land with La La Land taking it. La La Land for cinematograhy and production design. Moonlight for best original screenplay. Not sure who will win best director yet but it's between Jenkins and Chazelle. Elle will probably take foreign language film.

Here is what my ten picks for Best Picture would be, in order of most likely to least:

La La Land
Moonlight
Arrival
Manchester by the Sea
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
Fences

Jackie
Lion

In don't see Silence making it. I haven't seen it yet, and it's apparently very good, but there's been no buzz or really any good word about it at all, and no box office success.

True. My thinking is that the Academy loves Scorsese and Silence was a 20+ year passion project.

Here are my last minute predictions:

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight”
Ben Foster, “Hell or High Water”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, “Nocturnal Animals"
Lucas Hedges, “Manchester By The Sea”
Dev Patel, “Lion”

I know it's Jeff Bridges that is the one getting mentioned for Hell or High Water, but it's Foster who steals the film. As much as I love Bridges, he's really kind of channeling his True Grit character. The one most likely to be wrong is Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I could see Hugh Grant stealing that spot, which sucks because Taylor-Johnson was fantastic.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Viola Davis, “Fences”
Naomie Harris, “Moonlight”
Nicole Kidman, “Lion”
Octavia Spencer, “Hidden Figures”
Michelle Williams, “Manchester by the Sea”

This group seems to be the consensus. I haven't seen Hidden Figures yet, but I could see relative newcomer Janelle Monáe taking Octavia Spencer's spot, despite the fact that Spencer is an Oscar darling.

ACTOR

Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea”
Ryan Gosling, “La La Land”
Andrew Garfield, “Hacksaw Ridge”
Jake Gyllenhaal, “Nocturnal Animals”
Denzel Washington, “Fences”

I know I'm going out on a limb here and my love for Gyllenhaal might be showing, but if he doesn't get nominated something is wrong. He was great in Nocturnal Animals, he also gave a strong performance earlier in the year in Demolition. He was snubbed big time for Nightcrawler a few years back. Lastly, his main competition at this point is Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic. I love Viggo from his Lord of the Rings days, but I'm shocked he has gained so much steam these last few months. The film wasn't very well received and his performance hardly got any attention until recently. I'm telling you, if Viggo gets it instead of Jake, it's gonna get ugly.

ACTRESS

Amy Adams, “Arrival”
Isabelle Huppert, "Elle"
Ruth Negga, "Loving"
Natalie Portman, “Jackie”
Emma Stone, “La La Land”

There's a couple surprises here and I'm sure Meryl Streep will steal a spot. I'm hoping Negga gets a nomination. I love her on Preacher and I'm really looking forward to her performance in Loving. I hear she's great.

I am really surprised O.J.: Made in America was nominated. Yes, technically it premiered theatrically, but it's a television miniseries.

I remember hearing before the show aired that the producers were determined to get their documentary nominated for an Academy Award. They were sure to release the film in the required amount of theaters in order to qualify. I know what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure there have been HBO documentaries that have been nominated for Academy Awards.

LA LA LA... please. I am however thrilled for Arrival and Hacksaw. I hope one of them take it!

Arrival and Hacksaw Ridge were two of my favorite films of the year. Neither has a chance of winning Best Picture. It's really between La La Land and Moonlight. I think Manchester by the Sea might make their way into the conversation.

My thoughts on the nominations:

As Matt said, no huge surprises here. It still annoys me that the Academy can't just nominate 10 films. It's nice to see Mel Gibson get a nomination despite is history. I'm not sure what the voters saw in Viggo Mortensen. Jake Gyllenhaal should have been nominated there.

They keep saying Isabelle Huppert is the Meryl Streep of France and she must be considering she gets nominated despite the fact that her film doesn't even get a foreign film nomination. Speaking of Streep, this love affair with her has got to stop. It's utterly ridiculous that she gets nominated over Amy Adams. I was happy to see Ruth Negga get nominated though.

The other thing that annoys me is when they nominate people because they are familiar faces and past winners/nominees. Perfect example of this is Best Supporting Actor. Bridges doesn't come close to Foster in Hell or High Water, and as great has Shannon was in Nocturnal Animals, it's Aaron Taylor-Johnson that really steals the film. I would have liked to see a little more variety in the acting categories, but at least we don't have to hear any more BS about #OscarSoWhite anymore.

I'm already prepared to listen to all the La La Land haters. It's bound to happen whenever a film gets so much praise. It's a shame that people will dislike the film just because others like it, but that's the world we live in.

Well, I'm looking forward to seeing a few more of these movies, formulating opinions, making my picks and losing by 2 points to Heather. :arg:

While I agree Hell or High Water was ruled by Ben Foster, it really comes down to the difference between a kinetic performance and a subtle one. Jeff Bridges was still damn good but far more nuanced and subtle than Foster. I actually liked Michael Shannon more than Johnson, and Johnson was really damn good, Michael Shannon just has this quality that makes every single twitch and slight movement to make me take notice. He was my favourite part of that movie. It would have been nice to see fresh blood nominations with both Foster and Johnson, it all comes down to different strokes. I'm happy with Shannon getting his first nomination in nearly a decade because he's just that damn good. Him, Gyllenhaal, and Hawke are two of the least nominated great actors working today.

And Streep is great, but having not seen Florence Foster I can't really comment. Amy Adams was victim of a split vote, I can almost guarantee that...she definitely got votes, but split between Nocturnal Animals and Arrival.

Apparently the Academy has a vote percentage and if a film doesn't reach it, it doesn't get a nomination, which is why it fluctuates year to year.

As for the La La Land hate...I HATE musicals. Never been a fan. LOVED this film though. A great film is a great film, no matter the popularity or genre.

Tommy, you're in luck:

https://www.cnet.com/news/arrival-arrives-in-theatres-again-with-bonus-footage-amy-adams-oscars/

"Arrival" is making second contact. Fresh from earning a whopping eight Oscar nominations, the suspenseful sci-fi drama will be rereleased in the US with extra footage.

Although star Amy Adams missed out on an acting nomination, the film is up for Academy Awards for best picture and for director Denis Villeneuve. The screenplay, cinematography, production design, editing and sound are also shortlisted for possible prizes.

Interestingly, the extra footage will be a look behind the scenes rather than an extended cut of the film itself.

I know it's not a big deal, but I wanted to mention that I hated the format of the nominations announcement. They need to go back to actual people announcing the nominees live. It felt canned and just lacked urgency. I know it's not a big deal, but it just bugged me.

I understand the whole percentage thing, I just think it's stupid. If you can nominate 10 films, just do it. You mean to tell me there weren't a few films that were close to making the cut? Every year we get 8 or more, so just make it 10.

As for La La Land, I honestly don't think it's even a pure musical. Sure, it has musical numbers, but besides the opening, which is the weakest song in the film, there aren't any other huge set pieces. People bailing on La La Land because of the perception of films made in the 50's isn't fair the film.

Mattrick
01-26-2017, 10:11 PM
Well, why not go back to five then? I think it's important to have a set level of support for a movie to qualify. It makes the nominations feel more earned. Maybe a film like Nocturnal Animals missed the cut by 6%, and it's worthy, but what if next year only 7 make the cut, and the next three best are between 10 and 15% off the mark? I think we saw weak, expanded pools in those first two years because of lower standards to have ten. That's just my opinion, of course, but so long as the films that missed the cut are being looked at in other ways, I'm happy. I thought Ex Machina was a masterpiece and my second favourite film of last year and it didn't even get a nomination for BP. But at least Garland's script was nominated and it won FX which was more than deserving. I like that they fluctuate BP nominees year to year so it doesn't feel obligatory. I don't want them to have ten nominations just for the sake of ten noms because it's usually easy to spot the ones that were tacked on to fill it out.

Just watched the nominations. Most weren't surprises, like you guys already said, but I was surprised by a few of the BP nominees (Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, and Hell or High Water). It looks like a lot will be out (or already out) on DVD before the Oscars, so that's good. Maybe I'll be able to watch all of them this year. I always seem to miss one or two before the show. My local theater isn't doing the Best Picture Showcase this year so I'll have to make some trips to the theater if they're re-released.

Speaking of Streep, this love affair with her has got to stop.

I thought the same thing when I saw her name pop up. She's one of my favorite actresses, but it kind of dilutes the quality of her performances when EVERY role is Oscar-nominated. Like, how do you know you're great at something if you're told that everything you do is great? I haven't seen Florence Foster Jenkins yet (it's been on my desk in its Netflix envelope for a month) and while she might be excellent in it, is she getting nominated for an excellent performance? Or for an average performance and because she's Meryl Streep?

...but at least we don't have to hear any more BS about #OscarSoWhite anymore.

Amen to that.

I am a fan of musicals, the old ones from the 50s. Love them. That said, I'm not even sure I really consider La La Land a musical. I guess it is, there are a few musical numbers but it's not like those films if that's what you're worried about. I think you'll like it.

The Rules

Oscar night is right around the corner, so I'm going to post the rules for those who might not be familiar with them. Please tell your friends from other boards to come on over and join us. The more the merrier.

You have until showtime on February 26, 2017.

This is the eighth year I'm running the Oscar contest. Heather regained her crown in a thrilling victory where the tie breaker was deployed for the first time.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, whomever has the closest number without going over is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have some time before Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess.

New this year:

We are really getting high tech this year. Ballots can still be submitted here, but if you wish, you can submit one using this Oscar ballot online form I created.

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

Thanks, Ricky! Google Forms is great to use. I'm hoping that some people who thought it was too much work to enter before use this method and therefore get new entries.

Also, I set it up so it sends a PDF. This way people can print out their picks and have it with them for the show.

Sent from the mind of Still Servant.

So I finally watched Manchester By the Sea last night. Oh man, what a depressing film. I heard it was going to be, but I expected at least a glimmer of hope or fun. That said, it was a good film and Casey was excellent in it, but definitely not a film I plan on rewatching anytime soon.

Hmm, it's actually a surprisingly funny film. Those funny scenes were enough to break up the depressing stuff.

Yeah of course I will enter. But like yourself, I will post my selections at the last minute so as not to reveal my cards.... :ninja:

Yeah, I usually prefer the strategy of waiting until the last minute, checking the recent buzz, but the last few years I've been burned by that. I second guess myself and go back and forth the whole day. This time I figured I'd just lock it in and not mess with it too much.

There's a few categories that I was torn on. Ended up going with my gut or who I personally want to win.

Also got to see both the live action and animated shorts yesterday. Wasn't really blown away with any of them. Curious how they pick which ones to nominate because surely there must be better ones.

Well, we are just a few days away. Just a reminder, there are a few ways to enter this year:

Ballots can still be submitted here, but if you wish, you can submit one using this Oscar ballot online form I created.

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

https://tinyurl.com/OscarContest2017

If you don't fancy the online form, just copy and paste the list of nominations and highlight your pick. Picks must be in by showtime.

This is the year I've watched the fewest BP-nominated films (Arrival and Hell or High Water), so I'm feeling like my picks won't be as strong as previous years. There's just not enough time to see everything. I was also torn on a lot of the categories. Guess we should just give the win to Heather now.

We would have/could saved a lot of scrolling if people used the voting widget. No need to quote, re-quote, then quote the re-quote.
Makes the thread tedious (particularly when every nominee is listed and the member's choice is in bold).

It's a bit like if every actual Oscar winner tonight not only listed the other nominees, but went on the list nominees in a different category.....cue music to get the person offstage...
Maybe we need a Kanye moment when La La Land wins best picture and he attempts to "Oscar Block".

Me and my friend have our own personal predictions between us. With Picture, Director, Actor/Actress, Original/Adapted, Score/Song left, me and my friend were both tied, but we picked the same things for everything except song, with my picking Audition and him picking City of Stars. He won by a point. The bastard.

I honestly can't believe that Piper won best animated short. WTF is that about? It's because it's Pixar! Borrowed time told a powerful albeit limited story but had simply gorgeous animation, and was done by Pixar animators independently. Pearl was really well done as well. Pear Cider and Cigarettes was by far the most inventive when it came to style and animation (I really wish these categories didn't seem to favour computer animation over other mediums). Piper was incredibly underwhelming to me. I didn't think the plot was anything special not, was the animation as impressive, not did it move me or really impact me at all.

I ended up with 13. Outside of Best Picture (never thought a small film like Moonlight would beat La La Land), I got all the big awards...all four acting awards, best director, both screenplays, score (given), cinematography, and production design. Figures Hacksaw Ridge, the only best picture nominee I didn't watch took two technical awards on which I couldn't judge properly. OJ is so hot right now so that seemed like a shoe-in. Basically take away the shorts (I'm lucky to get one right) and the costumes/make up (which I don't believe I have ever gotten right), and foreign language film and animated film (of which I saw zero of the nominees for either) I only missed 3 that I had seen most to judge on, and two of those went to Hacksaw which I didn't watch. Not a bad year for me. Probably my best year.

Statistically, the very fact that Piper was produced by Pixar meant that it was more likely to lose than win! Before last night, Pixar hadn't won an Oscar in this category for 15 years!!! :nope:

My thoughts exactly. It's funny because when we watched them, right after Piper ended I turned to Matt and said, that was cute but how on earth did it even get nominated. My guess is because it was a Pixar short. And go figure, it won. Definitely the least deserving of the animated shorts in my opinion. And I completely agree that I dislike that they seem to favor the computer animated ones. Can we please get real animation back...

Also really glad that Sing won for live action short. I didn't think it was going to. It was the only live action short I cared for. It was lighthearted but also told a message.

Well, it looks like we were all pretty close with the number of correct picks we all got. I don't think we've ever had everyone be THAT close before (and so many ties). I did about how I thought I would--not amazing, but not terrible either. Congrats to TDogz on winning (and thanks to Mike for running the contest again)!

As for the show itself, I thought it was one of the most entertaining shows in recent years. The opening was actually fun and not stuffy, they did a nice job at keeping things moving at a quick pace, and I liked that it didn't drag after the first half. Plus, there were enough good chunks of entertainment to keep things light, fun, and interesting (the candy parachutes, the tour bus of tourists, the "Lion King" bit, etc.) throughout the show. It also helped that the speeches were reined in and there were barely any winners played off stage. Overall, it was light and fun and not too, too heavy on political statements.

I think Jimmy Kimmel did a pretty good job, too. He wasn't laugh-out-loud hysterical, but he wasn't obnoxious and a lot of his jokes landed. I liked how present he was, too. He seemed to pop in and out a lot more than recent hosts.

(A note on run time: I'm not sure why they don't just expand the "official" timeslot of the show by an extra half hour. The show ALWAYS goes over its time by at least thirty minutes. Either cut some awards or cut some original content, but I'm not sure the show will ever fit into 3 hrs. with the amount of awards, original content, songs, and pre-recorded montages and clips.)

I'd still like to see more of an emphasis on the fun and magic of movies and filmmaking in general, but it was a fun show overall and I enjoyed watching.

Me and my friend were joking that Mel Gibson was a huge Trump supporter and was going to run up onto the stage, in a Make Mel Gibson Great Again hat, and suicide bomb Mahershala Ali for being Muslim, but then Andrew Garfield would jump out of his seat and kick Gibson up into the air and through the roof where he'd explode in the air.

And John Cho was funnier almost his his little segment with Leslie Mann than Kimmel was as a whole. Considering I kind of hate Jimmy Kimmel, I'll say he did a good job. He wasn't the funniest host, but his experience really shined through. It's the same reason why Ellen and Chris Rock did such good jobs, because of their experience with live crowds and stand up comedy. And, much like Ellen, I might not think they are the funniest people out there, but I'll damned if they aren't both charming! Cho and Mann for 2018!

I thought the show was very entertaining as well, especially compared to the last couple of years. I've also wondered why they don't expand the time slot. Has it ever not run over? I doubt it. Also really wish they would start it earlier for us here on the east coast. Didn't it use to at least start at 8? Now it's 8:30, which is just way too late for me to stay up. I don't know how I managed to make it to the end. And I've been a zombie all day because of it

You think 8:30pm is bad?? For me, the show didn't start until 1:30am and finished gone 5:00am. THAT was hardcore!!! :beat:

Well, it looks like we were all pretty close with the number of correct picks we all got. I don't think we've ever had everyone be THAT close before (and so many ties). I did about how I thought I would--not amazing, but not terrible either.

This was one of the more closely contested years we've ever had. (See result history below) We had a three way tie a few years ago with me, you and Heather. Honestly, when I was doing the scoring, I thought you were going to win. I know you were nervous because you didn't do as much homework, but it doesn't matter. I saw almost every film and you and I tied.

Congrats to TDogz on winning (and thanks to Mike for running the contest again)!

T-Dogz is the only person to beat Heather, it would have been cool to see him enter last year. He might be on a 3 year win streak. Also, you're welcome! I love running the tournament and I thought the online form worked out nicely. It made scoring things at the end of the night easier.

Completely agree. I thought this was the case even before the historic ending. It's pretty cool though that we will be talking about that moment for years to come. It will be a trivia question and everything. It should have never happened, but that's besides the point. I would have liked to have seen an opening that included all the films or something, but I understand doing the musical dance number. Jimmy's opening was strong, I loved the bus tour bit. I also thought the We Bought a Zoo bit was great too

I'd still like to see more of an emphasis on the fun and magic of movies and filmmaking in general, but it was a fun show overall and I enjoyed watching.

This is always the case for me as well. I will say that I loved the segments where actors were talking about who they looked up to. The segment with Michael J. Fox was great. I also really loved the segment that had fans of film like ourselves talking about what they loved about cinema. I love stuff like that. For people like us, we love the Oscars because we love film.

As for the awards themselves, there were quite a few surprises. This was especially the case in the technical categories. Arrival winning a sound Osar, Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts were all relative surprises.

I figured Casey was going to win for months, then Denzel won the SAG and started gaining steam, so I switched to him. Regardless, I was happy to see Casey take it. I also had a feeling Best Picture and Best Director were going to split, I just thought it would be opposite.

I thought it was a strong year for film, and honestly, I think 2017 is off to a great start. Get Out, John Wick 2 and Lego Batman were all really good. We might be in for a very good year.

I love Jimmy Kimmel, so I enjoyed the show immensely. All the feud stuff with Matt Damon was awesome.

My favorite skit was when he was watching We Bought A Zoo and he was mocking Damon's performance; "it's so... effortfull"

It's great to see the scores all together for the past years. So aside from those very predictable years for me where I got 22 and 20, I've stayed pretty consistent with 14-15.

That year you dropped 22 was straight up amazing. Ricky got 20 and still lost by 2. That's pretty amazing.

I remember it well. The one I got wrong was the animated short, and that was the first year I saw them so should have had a leg up on that award, but alas no

Always a bridesmaid! Not bad for my first time. Turned out to be what I call a spread-the-wealth kind of Oscars. I think people finally realized that La La Land was not as good a movie as it was originally thought to be. I liked it, but didn't love it. Kimmel on the other hand, killed it last night. One of the most consistently humorous hosts I can remember in years. He may not have gotten me with many belly laughs, but I was very amused throughout. Thanks for organizing the event.

You did great. You came so close to winning. If you had picked Hacksaw Ridge to win Best Sound Mixing instead of Sound Editing, you would have won.

Actually you did better last year - you scored 15 then.

I was more referring to getting all the big awards right (excluding BP which I haven't gotten right ever.). If I get acting/directing/cinematography/writing/score/production design right, I'm satisfied. And this is the first year I got each of them right! In 2013 I missed best/supporting actor, cinematography, and design, and in 2014 I missed both lead acting awards and Adapted Screenplay, and in 2015 I missed both lead acting awards, director, Original screenplay, score, cinematography, and last year I missed both supporting (I still can't believe Rylance won it!), and adapted screenplay. In my own personal contest, I was 10/10 last night! And the movie I wanted to win Best Picture actually won, but I didn't pick it because what I want to win never wins, and if I go with what I figure the academy will choose, they pick something out of left field like Spotlight!
