SNL is an American institution and will never be canceled. At least, I hope so. It's now in its 42nd season (just started October 1) and already we've had some great sketches. There was some discussion in the "General" thread, so in order not to hog that one too much, I thought a dedicated SNL thread was certainly warranted.

I know a lot of people think it's not as funny anymore, and maybe that's true, but it's one of those things you have to watch. For me, anyway. The best sketch of the season (and one of the best of all time, in my humble opinion) is David S. Pumpkins, which is just too silly for words, and that music, man!

Any questions?

Here's my other favorite of the season. "Would you like an ooey-gooey yummy-yummy delicious quesa-dilla?"

Actual politics aside, the political ones have been really good this season, I think. Alec Baldwin does a great Trump and McKinnon is great at everything.

The Sully sketch from this past week was pretty funny, too.

Agreed. Baldwin has really nailed it.

I'm glad you started this thread, Pablo. Personally, I will use it in a variety of ways. As a recap of the previous week's episode, as a place to discuss the ins and outs of the show which I've always found fascinating, and a place to post some of my favorite sketches.

You're right, people are always going to say it's not as funny. It all depends on which cast you associate with the most. My uncle used to say the Farley era wasn't as funny as the early years with Belushi and Chase. Then you had the people who grew up with the Farrell years and swore they were better than the Farley years etc. The show has always gone in phases, and it might be a little down right now, but it will come back like it always does.

My biggest issue with the show is the inability to develop memorable, recurring characters in recent years. Think back to your favorite sketches, they're usually featuring great recurring characters. The odd thing about SNL right now is that most of their memorable recurring characters are all relegated to the Weekend Update. You have McKinnon's Russian lady, Strong's Girl You Wouldn't Want to Talk to at a Party, Bobby Moynihan has two (both personal favorites) Drunk Uncle and Anthony Crispino. More recently, one of the most famous characters ever was Stefon.

Personally, I don't see why they can't transition some of these characters into actual sketches. As you all know, the cast members very often come up with sketches and characters, so it's on them to create the next memorable characters.

Lastly, if you guys ever get the chance, see if you can get tickets to an SNL rehearsal. I had the pleasure of going years ago and it's a lot of fun. It's longer and they are trying out tons of sketches. It's cool to go back and watch the actual show later in the night and see what made it to air and what didn't. The night I went, they cut two of the funnier sketches I thought.

I won tickets in their lottery a few years ago but the host (Charlie Day, with Maroon 5 as the musical guest) didn't really get me excited. I'm glad I didn't end up going, though, because I watched it live that night on TV and it was not a very good episode. I'd still like to go one day, though. I went to a Late Night with Jimmy Fallon taping once and that was a ton of fun. Got an aisle seat, met Jimmy, he signed my book, and got to participate in a "birthday dance-off" in the aisles with another audience member (this was after the show ended).

Really? Different strokes I guess but I didn't even get a small grin out of it. Nothing. Had to watch it online just now because when it was on that night, I changed the channel mid-sketch. Still don't like.

IMHO, best sketches are probably "More Cowbell" with Christopher Walken, Chris Farley as Matt Foley (in a van down by the river!) or any of the Jeopardy sketches with Will Ferrell as Alex Trebec and Norm McDonald as Burt Reynolds.

This one never fails to crack me up as well.

More Cowbell is an all-time classic. Matt Foley is my favorite SNL character. I truly believe they would have made films with that character if Farely had lived. Jeopardy are great too. Actually, the recent Black Jeopardy sketches are strong.

Here's one of my faves.

I'm not gonna lie, I was hoping to see Baldwin and McKinnon do Hillary and Trump. That opening was just odd to me. She looked like Hillary but was singing as Kate. The song was sung straight too, so Hillary voice or not, it wasn't meant to be funny, which defeats the purpose of a comedy show.

Obviously, they weren't going for laughs there. She was honoring the memory of Leonard Cohen and lamenting Trump's win.

Which is great, but millions of people tuned in to see SNL give their take on the election by seeing it through the eyes of the two people who have played the roles of Trump and Clinton all year. We didn't get it. I would have ended the show with the tribute to Cohen. Also, if you're really going to honor Cohen, have a real singer sing that fantastic song. I love Kate, but her voice is average at best.

I actually watched it live, which I never do anymore.

SNL has perhaps become a bit too aware of the impact it has, or wants to have, on the culture; when combined with its leftist political slant, we get (for several weeks now) open propaganda and political instruction, and then this weekend, McKinnon's (nice voice, talented woman) uber-pretentious and wounded portrayal of a left wing that literally can't believe that they lost an election.

As you say, it wasn't meant to be funny - but as things work out, it was mighty funny to me in its own way.

Let's not make this a political thread as well!!! Stick to the comedy!!! I agree with the above, SNL went a little off the rails with that, Hillary piece. I've been watching SNL since it's pilot and while they always included political humor they were pretty good at not overtly taking sides though they did always skew liberal though I think the main focus was they always questioned with a comedic slant. Heck, I'm a dinosaur though I suppose. lol

After dominating the 2017 Emmy Awards, Saturday Night Live is returning for its 43rd season with some brand new faces.

Comedians Heidi Gardner, Chris Redd, and Luke Null will join the iconic sketch show as featured players, the show announced Tuesday. The three newcomers will fill spots left vacant by Sasheer Zamata, Bobby Moynihan and Vanessa Bayer after the 42nd season. You can get a feel for each of them below.

The show's Sept. 30 premiere will be in the capable hands of host Ryan Gosling and the musical guest is just as splashy: Jay-Z.

Heidi Gardner

A regular on the popular Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast, Gardner will bring her impressive vocal work to the show. Like many SNL cast members, Gardner honed her craft at the Groundlings in Los Angeles.

Chris Redd

This stand-up comic may be the most recognizable: You may have caught him when he played Hunter, a scene-stealer in the 2016 Andy Samberg comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. See his Comedy Central stand up special Trapped in Atlanta to get a feel for his laidback style.

Luke Null

Null's a guitar-strumming musical comedian out of the distinguished improv company iO Chicago. He can really sing! Sometimes about Clay Aiken! Or Ryan Seacrest!

Nimesh Patel, Gary Richardson, Claire Friedman, Sam Jay, Erik Marino, Andrew Dismukes, and Steven Castillo will join the writing staff.

A question for the older SNL watchers out there:

I've been looking for something lately and just can't find it. Many years ago, the host did a monologue that imitated the Goodfellas POV introduction scene (where we see Jimmy Two-Times say "I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers"). I remember it was hilarious, but I can't remember who the host was and I can't find the bit on YouTube.

I am 99% sure the host was not in Goodfellas.

I think the host may have been Alec Baldwin, but I may well be imagining that.

Does anyone remember this?

Funny you say that, Mike. I forgot I had recorded Carell's episode, so I watched it on Sunday night and once I FF'ed through commercials, the music, and Weekend Update (which I really don't care for), it WAS about 40-45 minutes. I really think the show would be stronger if they got rid of the musical guests and Weekend Update and focused more on recurring characters.

Well, I agree with you about the musical performances, but the Weekend Update has become their bread and butter, and not just because of the our current political climate. SNL has very few recurring characters/sketches anymore. For some reason they can't seem to find them like they used to. However, the few recurring characters they do have usually show up on the Weekend Update.

Of course, since Bobby Moynihan left we lost Drunk Uncle and Anthony Crispino.

https://www.wmagazine.com/story/chloe-fineman-best-celebrity-impressions-snl

On Thursday, Saturday Night Live announced three new featured cast members for it's 45th season: Shane Gillis, Bowen Yang, and Chloe Fineman. While the three have already made names for themselves in the comedy scene, they're not quite household names yet. Though, the later has already found quite a following for herself impersonating household names on Instagram. Since studying improv at Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles, Fineman has already established herself so fully on Instagram—her handle is @chloeiscrazy—that Emily Ratajkowski, Gus Kentworthy, Jameela Jamil, Spencer Pratt, Tommy Dorfman, and Zoë Kravitz all lost it in the comments section within hours after Fineman made the announcement.

For the uninitiated, the best place to start might be with Fineman's most viewed video to date: a truly uncanny impression of the disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. If you've also seen Tavi Gevinson's Holmes impression, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Fineman does pretty much exactly the same voice for Holmes as she does for Gigi Hadid.

For the past two years, Fineman has made a tradition out of bringing the increasingly unsettling White House Christmas decorations to life via a smoky-eyed Melania Trump. This past year, she also took a page out of Ivanka's book and observed Hanukkah.

A heads up: If you find Fineman's Melania unsettling, well, you might not want to watch her terrifying take on the 16-year-old Nebraskan YouTuber Jojo Siwa.

Fineman has already proven her skills when it comes to television, taking on Netflix hits like Natasha Lyonne's Russian Doll and Hannah Gadsby's Nanette. But that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her cinematic oeuvre. Behold Fineman's take on Drew Barrymore, on a street art tour of Bushwick; Busy Philipps, twirling her hair; Maisie Williams, bushy eyebrowed as ever; and Jennifer Lawrence, reaching unprecedentedly low octaves of laughter.

As you've no doubt noticed by now, Fineman's collection of wigs is truly impressive. But she's also not afraid go rogue, like that time she pulled an Anna Delvey and stepped into the lobby of 11 Howard.

In case there was any doubt that Fineman has the range, she's taken on Timothée Chalamet, in all of his shaggy haired glory, too. If fans get their say, it looks like she'll soon be taking over that role from Pete Davidson—along with Marianne Williamson from Kate McKinnon.

Fineman also does an impeccable Meryl Streep, but she might not land that role so easily. The same happens to be true for Bowen Yang, her soon-to-be castmate.

https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/09/12/gay-asian-comic-bowen-yang-joins-saturday-night-live-cast/

Gay comic Bowen Yang has joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, becoming the show’s first full-time cast member from an Asian background.

It was announced on Thursday (September 12) that Yang would be joining SNL for its upcoming 45th season, which is set to begin on September 28.

Yang, whose parents are from China, is best known as the co-host of gay comedy podcast Las Culturistas, as well as for his viral lip-sync videos to dramatic monologues.

The comic has previously served as a staff writer on the show during its 44th season, co-writing a skit that featured Emma Stone as an actress who is cast in a gay porn film as the cheated-on girlfriend. He also made occasional appearances on the show previously as North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

Yang, 29, was congratulated on Twitter by friends and fans, who pointed out that he was one of only a few out gay men to have joined the SNL cast.

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon tweeted: “OMG YES YES YES 🙆🏼*♂️👏🏻❤️”

One supporter tweeted: “First Asian cast member and also one of the VERY few openly gay men on the cast. Putting on my Terry Sweeney Nancy Reagan wig and clapping for @bowenyang!”

Another joked: “if you truly care about asian representation, you must venmo all your gay asian male friends $5 to congratulate them on this victory.”

Yang will not be the only out LGBT+ cast member, however, with Kate McKinnon returning to the show.

The two other new cast members announced on Thursday are Shane Gillis and Chloe Fineman.

SNL has previously been called out for its lack of gay male comics, with 1980s staple Terry Sweeney and short-lived 2014 cast member John Milhiser among the only out men to have appeared.

James Adomian, who is known for his viral impersonations of Bernie Sanders, said in 2018: “We are in a golden age of gay male comics, at live shows, around the country and at festivals.

“We are very well-presented at live shows and on the internet. Television? Not so much.

“It’s sad for me to see these guys and go, ‘Oh my god, this is great!’, and then you realize, oh f**k, there’s a brick wall in front of them…. it would be nice if they put a gay man on camera on that show.”

He claimed that execs including SNL’s Lorne Michaels were afraid of putting gay men on TV, adding: “[They’re saying], I’m not homophobic, but I’m afraid that my audience is.”

https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/09/13/snl-comedian-shane-gillis-absolute-worst-apology-anti-gay-slurs/

Saturday Night Live‘s new cast member Shane Gillis gave the worst ‘apology’ to those accusing him of racism, sexism and homophobia.

Gillis, 31, made the offensive comments in a 2018 episode of his podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.

He tried to delete a particularly offensive episode from the internet, but a recording on YouTube resurfaced hours after SNL announced him as their new hire.

The episode features Gillis and his co-host Matt McCusker ranking minorities in “the hierarchy of stand up comedy”. The 20-minute clip is riddled with racist and anti-gay slurs, and the use of the word “gay” as a pejorative.

The pair also sexualise transgender people and express disgust at trans sex workers, who they call “ladyboys.”

They state that white women are the least funny group of people, with gay men being the second un-funniest. They poke fun at Chinese immigrants, who they describe as “f*cking ch*nks” and imitate their accents.

The men then mock the US comic Hasan Minhaj by doing a camp impression of him, call him a “pussy” and a “lesbian”, and discuss whether he’s ever had sex with a man.

Male comedians who talk about mental health are described as “white faggot comics” and “f***ing gayer than Isis”. Gillis claims that to succeed as a comic requires a lot of “d**k-sucking”.

The highly inappropriate comments attracted significant attention on social media as they emerged just as SNL announced its first cast member from an Asian background, Bowen Yang, who is also gay.

The backlash on social media was swift. LGBT+ journalist Alex Berg wrote: “Shane Gillis made racist, homophobic and sexist statements on his podcast as recently as LAST SEPTEMBER. A Philly-based comedy theatre even stopped working with him in the last few years because of his remarks. SNL, why tho?!”

Asian American actress Cindy Chu added: “If you’re a comic & you think calling Chinese ppl ch*nks is funny, you’re a hack AND a racist… For every untalented Shane Gillis there are hundreds of talented Bowen Yangs who have had to fight tooth & nail.”

Vulture noted Gillis has long used racist, homophobic and sexist material in his stand-up performances. “It all raises the question: Did Saturday Night Live vet its new cast members? It’s 2019, so at this point, there’s really no excuse for this kind of slip-up.”

On Thursday, September 12, Gillis responded to the criticism in a statement that falls far short of an actual apology.

He wrote: “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses.

“I’m happy to apologise to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said.

“My intention is never to hurt anyone but I’m trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks.”

Film producer Malory Yu responded: “You know, Shane Gillis has made me see the light. I get it now!! It was risk-taking COMEDY when a white man hollered ‘ch*nk’ at me through his car window when I walked home from school!!! I’ll be sure to laugh next time, I promise.”

Well, that was quick. Good. But how was he hired in the first place?

https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/16/entertainment/snl-shane-gillis/index.html

"Saturday Night Live" has fired one of its most recent hires, Shane Gillis, just days after videos of comedian making bigoted comments came to light.

"After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining 'SNL,'" an 'SNL' spokesperson on behalf of Lorne Michaels said in a statement to CNN. "We want 'SNL' to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for 'SNL.' We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard."

Following news of his ouster, Gillis wrote on Twitter, "I'm a comedian who was funny enough to get 'SNL.' That can't be taken away."

He added: "Of course I wanted an opportunity to prove myself at 'SNL' but I understand it would be too much of a distraction. I respect the decision they made. I'm honestly grateful for the opportunity. I was always a Mad TV guy anyway."

The NBC sketch show had announced Gillis' hire last week, along with the additions of new series regulars Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang, the only full-time cast member of East-Asian descent next season. News broke that afternoon of Gillis' history of making defamatory comments about Chinese Americans and homosexuals during episodes of his and fellow comedian Matt McCusker's "Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast."

In one since-deleted video, Gillis says, "Let the f---ing ch--ks live there," of Chinatown. Gillis also mocks a Chinese accent, the language barrier and says, "Chinatown's f---ing nuts."

Gillis responded to the backlash Thursday night, posting on Twitter that, "I'm a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you're going to find a lot of bad misses" and that "I'm happy to apologize to anyone who's actually offended by anything I've said."

Many took him up on his offer, including television creator Daniel Chun, who wrote back "I was offended, Shane!" Novelist Monica Byrne responded, "Looking forward to your offer getting revoked, dude. Wow."

2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who Gillis referenced with a racial epithet in a May podcast, stated over the weekend that he didn't think Gillis should lose his job.

"I've experienced a lot of anti-Asian racism throughout my upbringing, and it hurts. It's something that is very real, and I do think anti-Asian racial epithets are not taken as seriously as slurs against other groups," Yang said in an appearance on "State of the Union" with CNN's Jake Tapper. "But at the same time, bigger picture, I believe that our country has become excessively punitive and vindictive about remarks that people find offensive or racist and that we need to try and move beyond that, if we can, particularly in a case where the person is, in this case, to me, like a comedian whose words should be taken in a slightly different light."

In a tweet Monday afternoon, Yang wrote that Gillis had reached out to him and the two planned to meet.

Shane Gillis reached out. Looks like we will be sitting down together soon.
— Andrew Yang (@AndrewYang) September 16, 2019

Gillis is just the latest example of a comedian's past comments and actions gaining new attention in the online world.

Trevor Noah saw a backlash to some of his old tweets, which were deemed offensive toward women and Jews, when he took over as host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" in 2015. Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting this year's Oscars after his past homophobic tweets surfaced. Sarah Silverman recently revealed she was fired from a movie after producers found a sketch of her eponymous Comedy Central show in which she wore blackface make-up -- a sketch she says she no longer supports.

Gillis was due to start his new job at "SNL" as part of the show's 45th season, which premieres September 28 with host Woody Harrelson and musical guest Billie Eilish.

I've said it before, but I will say it again. My Godfather used to talk about watching SNL and loving the show but commented how he never knew who the musical performances were. My sister and I would laugh and roll our eyes at our out-of-touch elder.

Now every week my sister and I comment how we have never heard of any of these musicians. Also, I had to jack up the volume on my TV because she was whispering the entire time.

Yes, I do appreciate the cameos. Any time they want to bring in Rachel Dratch and Maya Rudolph is fine by me!

Also, do you guys watch the SNL Thanksgiving compilation special they play every year? It's become by annual tradition for the day before Thanksgiving. There's some good ones in there that get me every time (Martha Stewart, Adam Sandler's Thanksgiving song, the one where Will Ferrell's family feed each other by mouth).

I'm surprised no one posted/commented about the Eddie Murphy show this week. I DVRed it and watched it yesterday and I think I laughed hard at nearly every sketch (except the one at the North Pole at the end of the show, which I thought was really the only weak one). Probably in my top two shows of this season. Eddie did a great job.

https://www.vulture.com/2020/09/snl-cast-3-new-members-season-46.html

If you thought the cast of Saturday Night Live couldn’t get any bigger, you thought wrong. In an interview with Vulture, SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels revealed that the long-running NBC show has added three featured players to the cast for season 46. The news follows the show’s September 15 announcement that the entire cast from season 45 will return to SNL this fall, which means the cast will be comprised of a whopping 20 members for season 46.

Returning featured players Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman will be joined by the three new hires. (Ego Nwodim, who was a featured player last season, has been promoted to repertory player for season 46.) The new cast includes Los Angeles–based UCB alum Lauren Holt, L.A. stand-up Punkie Johnson, and Andrew Dismukes, who was hired as an SNL writer for season 43 in 2017 and co-wrote the “Del Taco Shoot” sketch with Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett. Here’s more info on each new cast member from NBC:

Lauren Holt is an actor, comedian, singer, and improviser. She was a house performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in Los Angeles and starred in the independent web series The Filth and in the short film Parent Teacher Conference, for which she received a Best Actress nomination at the Atlanta Comedy Film Festival.

Punkie Johnson is a comedian and writer whose recent credits include Space Force, Corporate, Adam Ruins Everything, and Bill Burr Presents: The Ringers. She was a New Face at the Just for Laughs festival in 2019 and is a proud paid regular at the world-famous Comedy Store in Hollywood.

Andrew Dismukes has served as an SNL staff writer since season 43. He is a stand-up comedian who was selected for the 2017 New Faces Showcase at the Just for Laughs festival and has performed at other festivals including Comedy Central’s Colossal Clusterfest and the New York Comedy Festival.

Michaels also revealed to Vulture a big promotion on the SNL writing staff: Anna Drezen, who previously served as a supervising writer, has been bumped up to co–head writer, joining Colin Jost, Michael Che, and Kent Sublette.

For more updates from Michaels about the upcoming season of SNL, read Vulture’s interview with the SNL boss here.

I hope this does not happen, SNL is an American institution and should continue indefinitely:

https://www.newsweek.com/snl-kenan-thompson-saturday-night-live-ending-season-50-lorne-michaels-1729483

Saturday Night Live has been on air since 1975, but recent comments from stars who work on the show have suggested that the sketch comedy variety series could be coming to an end in the next few years.

Actor Kenan Thompson and creator Lorne Michaels have both stated in recent interviews that the show, which will air its 48th season later this year, could end after its 50th installment.

SNL has featured stars like Pete Davidson, Steve Martin, Dan Aykroyd, Tina Fey and Adam Sandler in its cast, as well as boasting superstar hosts such as Kim Kardashian, Donald Glover and Emma Stone.

So will SNL's 50th season be its last? Newsweek has everything you need to know about what's been said about SNL ending.

Kenan & Kel star Thompson, who is currently SNL's longest-running cast member, recently said that Season 50 might be "a good number to stop at."

Thompson made the comments on Comedy Central's Hell of a Week with Charlamagne Tha God when host Charlamagne informed him of the rumor about SNL ending after its 50th season.

The rumor stems from SNL creator and executive producer Michaels' 2021 interview with Gayle King on CBS Morning. During the interview, Michaels, 77, confirmed he would stay on the show until its 50th anniversary. "I'd like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave," he said.

Speaking with Charlamagne about these comments, Thompson said: "Is that the rumor? OK, well I need to start planning.

"There could be a lot of validity to that rumor because 50 is a good number to stop at. It's an incredible package."

Aside from a five-year period from 1980-85, Michaels has been running SNL since its launch in 1975. He also executive produces late-night shows The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers—both hosted by former Saturday Night Live stars.

Continuing to discuss Michaels' influence on the show, Thompson wouldn't say that the show couldn't continue without him, but said Michaels' departure would open up an "opportunity for a lot of bull**** to come into the game."

"[Michaels] is such a legend that he keeps off those corporate wolves if you will," Thompson said. "They spend a lot of money on that show every week, it's an expensive show but it's a one of a kind thing."

And just getting back to the rumors of SNL ending after the 50th season, again I honestly believe it's an iconic American television institution like The Tonight Show or Meet the Press. It should not be canceled. Also, SNL's next episode will be its 937th. That means if it airs its usual 20-21 episode seasons, it will hit episode 1,000 in its 51st season. No way would NBC not want to get to that.

https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/saturday-night-live-return-nbc-pete-davidson-1235736072/

NBC is ready to open the 49th season of “Saturday Night Live,” pushed back just a week or two from when the series might normally launch in the fall.

After being shut down in May by the Hollywood writers strike, “SNL” will return on October 14, marking the first of three consecutive weeks of original broadcasts, NBC said in an announcement Wednesday. Ice Spice will serve as musical guest. Davidson had been scheduled to host the show last season, before the strike forced “SNL” to go dark. Bad Bunny will host and perform on Oct. 21.

The entire cast is set to return, with a single addition: Chloe Troast, who has performed with the writer trio that makes up SNL’s “Please Don’t Destroy,” joins as a featured player. NBC did not say whether any of the current group of featured players, which include Sarah Sherman and James Austin Johnson, had been promoted to the main cast.

As more TV viewers migrate to streaming services to watch their favorite scripted dramas and comedies on demand, “SNL” has taken on new importance for NBC. Once relegated to airing after the late local news in a time slot network executives didn’t consider paramount, the program now runs live across the U.S. all at once, meaning that it runs in primetime in certain parts of the country. The show is one of the most-watched entertainment programs on TV among viewers between 18 and 49, the demographic most preferred by advertisers.

NBCUniversal has already started negotiating with advertisers for sponsorships tied to the landmark 50th season of “SNL,” slated to debut in the fall of 2024. In March, “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels made a presentation in Studio 8H, the show’s longtime home at NBC’s New York headquarters, to around 100 advertisers about what to expect as the anniversary draws near. NBC plans a series of retrospectives around “SNL” as well as at least one documentary about the program.

“Saturday Night Live” generated approximately $74,7 million dollars in ad sales in 2022, according to Vivvix, a tracker of ad spending. That figure represents a 12% dip from the nearly $85.3 million “SNL” generated in 2021.

https://www.indiewire.com/news/breaking-news/snl-1975-casting-rachel-sennott-cooper-hoffman-gabriel-labelle-1234946015/

Gabriel LaBelle is making a career out of portraying legendary creatives.

After playing a version of Steven Spielberg in the auteur’s semi-autobiographical film “The Fabelmans,” LaBelle is set to star as Lorne Michaels in “SNL 1975,” charting the rise of “Saturday Night Live.” IndieWire can confirm that Cooper Hoffman and Rachel Sennott will co-star; Deadline first reported the casting news.

“SNL 1975” is written and directed by Jason Reitman, with Gil Kenan co-writing based on interviews with “SNL” alum. Reitman, Kenan, Jason Blumenfeld, Erica Mills, and Peter Rice are producing.

“Licorice Pizza” and “Wildcat” actor Hoffman will play Dick Ebersol, and “Shiva Baby” star Sennott is set to portray Rosie Shuster in the biopic.

The logline reads: “On October 11th, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. This is the true story of what happened that night behind the scenes in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of SNL. The chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, as we countdown the minutes in real time to the infamous words, ‘Live From New York, it’s Saturday Night.'”

“SNL” creator and producer Michaels recently told Entertainment Tonight that the approaching 50th anniversary of the sketch series has inspired thoughts of retirement.

“Of course I’ve thought about it,” Michaels aid. “We’re doing the 50th anniversary show in February ’25. So, I will definitely be there for that and definitely be there until then. And then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do.”

Michaels addressed the long-gestating rumors that “SNL” alum Tina Fey could take over as showrunner, saying, “It could easily be Tina Fey. But there are a lot of people who are there now who are also, you know…Tina’s brilliant and great at everything. She’s a very important person in my life.”

Michaels served as showrunner of “SNL” from 1975 to 1980, before returning in 1985 and continuing until today. Over its history, “SNL” has received 314 Emmy nominations with 84 wins, and launched the careers of iconic actors and comedians like Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and more.

Fey joined the show in 1997 as a writer; she later became the show’s first woman head writer in 1999 and started appearing as part of the troupe in 2000. She exited “SNL” in 2006 and developed NBC sitcom “30 Rock” in part based on her experience on the series.
