View Full Version : 2016 Fundraiser-THE GRAND PRIZE announcement - June 15, 2016

Randall Flagg
06-14-2016, 11:56 AM
The tickets for the Grand Prize drawing are safely at the offices of Cemetery Dance.

Brian James Freeman will draw the winner tomorrow.

I will announce the winner at 12 Noon PDT (1500 EDT, 1900 GMT) on Wednesday June 15th, 2016.

The Grand Prize winner will receive a personalized book from Stephen King!

The winner can choose between one of three books:

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams USA Trade 1st Edition
End of Watch USA Trade 1st Edition
The Bill Hodges Trilogy USA Scribner Edition. Note: King will only inscribe one of the books-winner can request which book, but Stephen King makes the decision.

The winner can request a brief (I suggest less than 50 words) inscription. Mr. King decides what if any part of the request he will use. In the past he has honored requests verbatim, and at other times he wrote something different (but still wonderful) than what was requested.

Good luck to all of the contributors!

* Fine print-Winner need not be present for the drawing, only coherent. Winner has 90 days to respond to notification.

Mr. King is on a book tour that doesn't end until 6/18/2016. After the tour he is unlikely to get to the book until well into July.
Be prepared to wait a bit.

Thanks to everyone for the notes!
Here are some of the quotes I am considering for an inscription:

"Books are uniquely portable magic" a King favorite
"Books were an escape, books were freedom" from Finders Keepers
"Never tell a lie when you can tell the truth" from Mister Mercedes
"Eighty percent of success is just showing up" from MM
"After all, everyone casts a shadow" from End of Watch

Any thoughts? I am leaning toward the slip cased set of the triology since I already have the others signed.

You already know that I like the idea of the slipcased set. As for the inscription...

I like the On Writing quote. It doesn't have anything to do specifically with the set though.

As for the trilogy quotes I like:
"Books were an escape, books were freedom" from Finders Keepers & "After all, everyone casts a shadow" from End of Watch

I also like Simon's idea. Provide King with one quote from each book and let him decide. Perhaps he'll take the suggestion and run with it.

As discussed..... The Trilogy is the obvious choice.

My thought for the inscription would be as Simon suggests. Share with Mr King the trilogy quotes and see where he goes with that.
I particularly like:
"Never tell a lie when you can tell the truth" from Mister Mercedes
"Books were an escape, books were freedom" from Finders Keepers
"After all, everyone casts a shadow" from End of Watch

No matter what he writes, in which book, you will have an extremely cool, unique item. You might even get the earliest dated signed Hodges Trilogy. Keep in mind that the book releases on Tuesday 6/28/2016. It then has to be sent to King's office. Even if It's sent priority mail, it's unlikely King will get to it until well after the 4th of July.

Start the hate. Just looked and it is a 1st printing.

BTW, not only did Kerry (sentinel) choose the Trilogy (no-brainer), but he had the forethought to ask for any one of three inscriptions. None personalized, but hey maybe he wants it to fetch more upon his demise...

I sent his request with the BHT and a note acknowledging that Mr. King could inscribe whatever he wished, and that it need only be one of the three.

Kerry did well.

Two out of three is phenomenal. Twice what I thought he would get.

If by chance he wins again next year, he can request the inscribed EOW...

I think someone should send Jerome another set.......that way it can be an option again for next year....but then again, there would be no guarantees that King would sign all three books in 2017.

I would kick in $15 toward a set.......

Have we confirmed the MM is indeed a 1st?

Getting ready to really dislike Kerry.

Very kind of Mr King. Maybe after signing about 5k copies of EOW he just couldn't stand to sign another one. I think it's super cool he signed the two of the book and Kerry shouldn't have a problem picking up a signed EOW if he wants the whole trilogy signed.

Also again, it's great that Kerry had the choice of book(s) to get signed. A real win for everyone I feel.

Congrats Kerry, if it's any compensation I don't hate you. much.

Good job on not specifying which book and providing 3 options of dedication - where did you get that idea?....

Am i correct in assuming that these are quotes from each book? When he signed my Finders Keepers... he wrote the characters name behind the quote and then signed his name.

Yes they are.

Mr. Mercedes:

He muses on the terrorists who brought down the World Trade Center (he muses on them often). Those clowns actually thought they were going to paradise, where they’d live in a kind of eternal luxury hotel being serviced by gorgeous young virgins. Pretty funny, and the best part? The joke was on them . . . not that they knew it. What they got was a momentary view of all those windows and a final flash of light. After that, they and their thousands of victims were just gone. Poof. Seeya later, alligator. Off you go, killers and killed alike, off you go into the universal null set that surrounds one lonely blue planet and all its mindlessly bustling denizens. Every religion lies. Every moral precept is a delusion. Even the stars are a mirage. The truth is darkness, and the only thing that matters is making a statement before one enters it. Cutting the skin of the world and leaving a scar. That’s all history is, after all: scar tissue.

Finders Keepers:

Morris assured himself that shit did not mean shit and went back to his cell. Not exactly a penthouse apartment, just six by eight, but at least there were books. Books were escape. Books were freedom. He lay on his cot, imagining how pleasant it would be to have fifteen minutes alone with Cora Ann Hooper, and a power nailer.

I haven't read End Of Watch, so I can't help there yet.

sentinel had a well thought out request.

I was shocked that King inscribed all three books, but sentinel presented three requests that King was willing to do.

If sentinel had asked for three quirky personal inscriptions, King would have done one book.

Example requests that would likely have been denied:

MM: To the #1 Collector in the world, and a great Mercedes Benz repair person, Best Stephen King

FK: Stow this book in a case and bury it under a tree. Best, Stephen King
P.S. Where is the tree?

EOW: I'm going back to the other two books and writing "KERRY" underneath the inscriptions. Should make them more personal. Best, Steve

Here is the EoW passage:
Charlotte Gibney and Henry Sirois had treated her more like a mentally defective child on a day pass. Holly is a different woman now, but traces of the old Holly still remain. And that's okay with Hodges. After all, everyone casts a shadow.
