I've been reading Stephen King since the release of Misery when I was a mere teenager, but I only started collecting SK purposefully around 1.5 - 2 years ago. I’ve always had the "collector's gene", the "collector's bug" (whatever the hell this sickness is). I wish I had found this site and Betts Books before I started collecting – would have saved me making a few dud purchases.

One of my collecting goals for this year was to start a collection thread here and - now that I’ve finally got these new bookshelves - here it is.

It’s a very modest collection compared to the gargantuan collections on here. In terms of direction, my focus is pretty standard: 1st editions (both UK and US) and the S/L’s (of King's own work or anthologies). Primarily due to space restrictions and the fact that I can't get absolutely everything, I’m not collecting gift / artist editions unless it’s a particular favourite book of mine or there’s no S/L alternative (as in the PS Publishing series). And Lettered editions are beyond my budget.

Finally, you may not be able to see them, but I also have three Asbestos Firestarters and one first state Salem’s Lot - but they're disguised as “Shipping and Postage Costs” from the US to Australia! :scared:

Thanks so much Jon. And those shelves are IKEA standards - build em yourself in a day or, if you're handy with a hammer like me, around 2 weeks.

I really like your bookshelves that display so well and don't seem to take over space in the room.

The collection is amazing and my new collection is in my office and was only going to be Dark Tower as i have limited desk space to display. After seeing your collection though, I realize I'm in denial and will have to create more space like this when I buy some other King books outside of Dark Tower :-) Thanks for sharing. -jake

Thanks Kris! Yes, I've tried to aim for NF+ on most things. Of course there's some notable exceptions - the US Salem's Lot needs a good hospital stay, and a few others where the blemishes are deceitfully hidden :)

Wow, thanks Bob! And yes, the way the bookshelves are designed, a "left and right wing" division seemed best.

Cheers Jake. And yes, you're in denial. I bought the IT S/L and said to myself, "This is all I need, one nice book to pay homage to one of my favourite writers." Then it arrived, and I saw this tome, and thought. "Well, maybe one more" Then, "Well, I can't have this without having that..." And now I'm in SK collecting Anonymous.

The bookshelves are IKEA - they look good but have a slightly "flimsy" feel to them... Only slightly, and I'm definitely happy with them. They come with an "extension" level for another shelf up the top (see Honkytonk's thread here - Chad has those extensions), but I couldn't fit it because of the damn picture rails in that room.

Echoing others statements, really nice setup. Particularly like the way the odd book every now and then has its cover facing out instead of the spine. Makes for a really cool look. Interested in how you decided which covers to show?

Thank you Simon, I appreciate your comments. As for the covers, it was a combination of three variables: (1) What is not currently slipcased (the older ones, and flat-signed ones, are all slipcased); (2) My favourite works; (3) My favourite artwork.

I only have a few flat signed.

Revival (of course). So common it seems like a variant (and a pretty ugly signature).

Thanks Dez. And I love the Sub Press Books of Blood. Uses the original artwork (which I love - I only wish the artwork wrapped around the spines, as the originals, but it doesn't). Book 1 only is signed, the slipcase is nice, and the box is very heavy. The books themselves, the stories, are incredible and I have actually read these editions (carefully! and not in the bath  ) I got mine for $225 USD, not sure how they are valued now.

Haha. Cheers Chad. Yeah, it was a goal of 2016, and once I had the bookshelves in place and I could take the books out of the wardrobes in 3-4 rooms and house them in one place, just needed the time to get some photos. Have some more good ones heading from Betts any time now.

Thank you Jon. Yes, I have been on a roll, but it's about to slow right down with most of my goals done for the year. I got in early before the Aussie dollar finally crapped out. We're under 1:2 with the UK pound now. As for EotD, I'm lucky I've got these adjustable shelves: Space for the little dudes on top, and big dudes on bottom.

There was a time when I wasn't collecting inscribed King novels. I was sticking to the S/L's, nice solid focus. Now I'm like, "I'll just grab inscribed novels of my favourites only". Next it will be... "Everything inscribed, EVERYTHING, and f*k the world!"

Moral? Drugs are bad.

Here are some recent acquisitions, 1sts and fine...

My haul over the last month. Purchased from a few places, including the King Pin at Betts. I'm stoked that I finally got a near fine copy of Salem's Lot 2nd state.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_91551.JPG

This is my second EotD S/L. I got this because I liked the inscription - In reference to King leaving "Bob" of the first personalised 250. (I still don't know how King forgot to include Bob Jackson in the first round??)

Thanks Lincoln. Some of them (all of those in the first pic i.e., the T.E.D. Klein, Charles Grant, etc, and the the Guy Smith in the second pic) were from a guy in Perth (bought on Gumtree). The others here in the latet pic are a combo of local eBay seller and a US seller from Etsy. I've found some great vintage paperback sellers on Etsy.

It's not often that I can find a local seller with an (authentic) King signature... From what I can glean from the net, Holly Petro is a young woman who was paralysed from the chest down after a car accident. There was a charity concert, The Bell Tower Jam, in 2009, and a number of artists also donated items to be auctioned: Koontz, Yoko Ono, REM, Wilco, Chuck Palahniuk, and others, including King.

Cheers Chad. I saw Gojira live a few years back at Soundwave music festival and really enjoyed them, but then kinda forgot about them. Only recently I was looking at lists of "top metal albums" of the year, and they kept ranking high so got their stuff. And yes, those vases are the hook with the better half: "Listen, if I get more shelves we can have other stuff up too..." (UNTIL I need more space)

I'm a Lovecraft fan and have recently started collecting the Arkham house hardcover publications of his work. Lovecraft published almost exclusively in the pulp mags of the time and it was only after he died that his friend and fellow author August Derleth founded Arkham House with the purpose to preserve Lovecraft's work in hardcover.

The Horror in the Museum and Other Revisions (1970, 1st / 1st in an edition of 4,058 copies). Collection of stories revised or ghostwritten by Lovecraft.

The Dunwich Horror and Others (1963, 1st / 1st in an edition of 3,133 copies). A 'best-of' collection of Lovecraft's short stories.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/900/medium/IMG_0294.JPG

Something About Cats and Other Pieces (1949, 1st / 1st in an edition of 2,995 copies). This was the 6th and final release of Lovecraft's original work before Arkham released Lovecraft's letters. Contains short fiction, letters, essays, poetry, revisions, and memories/essays from other authors about Lovecraft's own work.

The Survivor and Others (1957, 1st / 1st in an edition of 2,097 copies). Stories written by August Derleth after Lovecraft's death, based on or "inspired" by unused Lovecraft notes.

Here are some more H.P. Lovecraft Arkham House 1sts editions that I've acquired over the past few months.

Collected Poems. Published in 1963 in an edition of 2,013 copies. A "best of" Lovecraft poetry.

The Lurker At The Threshold. A novel by August Derleth apparently based upon fragments of Lovecraft's work he died before completing. Published in 1945 in an edition of 3,041.

The Dark Brotherhood and Other Pieces. A collection of stories, poems and essays by Lovecraft and other "weird fiction" contemporaries. Published in 1966, 3,460 copies.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Screen_Shot_2016-12-20_at_1_23_43_pm.png

Marginalia. This was the third collection of Lovecraft's work published by Arkham House. Published in 1944, it's not easy to find fine copies of this book and this copy is close to fine. 2,035 copies printed.

And finally, 3 Tales of Horror. This is basically a "Limited Artist Edition" of 1,522 copies, published in 1967 and illustrated by Lee Brown Coyne. It contains the stories Colour Out Of Space, The Dunwich Horror, and The Thing On The Doorstep. This copy is in gorgeous condition and also came with an original correspondence by August Derleth (directly signed) to the artist, explaining his dissatisfaction with the artist's portrait of Lovecraft.

Very nice additions, and great condition!

A book store near me got loaded up with Grant and Arkham books (and various chapbooks and paraphernalia) last year, I snatched up a lot of Robert E. Howard stuff, but passed on the Lovecraft. One I had consider specifically purchasing, and I think they still have it, was an anthology with a non-dedicated inscription from August Derleth.

Thanks Dan. And I love Robert E. Howard, that sounds like a sweet buffet to have gone to at that local bookstore... Does the bookstore have an online presence? That inscribed Derleth book sound intriguing...

Cheers Michael. I almost have all of Lovecraft's Arkham 1sts now... I need one more that's reasonably easily obtained ("Dagon and Other Stories"), and there's his first two publications which are VERY difficult to find it good condition (and out of my financial reach anyway, for the foreseeable liftime!): "The Outsider and Others" (one on eBay for $4,500 in pretty scrappy condition), and "Beyond The Wall Of Sleep"...

A recent haul of 1st editions (no King in this lot). The Juniper Tree is a signed / limited of 250 copies by Sub Press; Some Will Not Sleep is a hardcover run of 400 and comes with a signed card; Noctuary is signed on a tipped-in publishers plate specific to the book; Song of Kali is flatsigned.

When I first starting collecting King, I never thought I'd ever have this set sitting on my shelf. But, yesterday, my Holy Grail arrived. The Dark Tower, Signed Limited Set, Matching Number #428. It was shipped at the same time in 2 boxes, but the boxes arrived 5 days apart (I don't need to tell you how anxious those 5 days were for me). Thanks, of course, go to THE legendary seller around these parts, David at Betts.

Hahaaa... you're a classic man. And no, it's not wrong... (if I wasn't sporting a post-vasectomy ice-pack on my plums, I'd be moderately enamoured. Nevertheless, I have been shooting suggestive glances at it, as I shuffle past. She definitely knows I'm interested in her.)

Thanks Jake! It is a brilliant feeling, such a gorgeous collection and production. And that's fantastic about your search for #51. I contemplating a matching set over time, but being in Australia, I was afraid I wouldn't simply have enough resources to go on the hunt... or ever complete it. (maybe for my next set... ;)
