I started this project a year ago (with the help of Explorer and Bev) by creating a master spreadsheet that will include as much information as possible. It took some efforts to find and enter the data so at some point I left it behind.

Thanks to Josh (jsmcmullen92) and RF, we now have dedicated thread and any help providing or entering the data will be appreciated.

Here is the link to the Excel spreadsheet -

SIGNING EVENTS FILE (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1s801dflFInvJTsoMQgeIPvOB0VDZaLNal7WB205b9Bw/edit?usp=sharing)

Anyone with this link can review and edit the file so fell free to do so.

For those of you who want to share the info here, please post the following details and I will update the file:

Book name
Event Date
Location name
City
State
Country
Supported by
Official signing? (Y/N)
Pre-signed copies distributed? (Y/N and how many)
Other books signed ? (Y/N)
Other authors presented
Notes

ANY Comments / improvements are welcomed

9/20/04 - DT 7. Just Books, Too in Old Greenwich, CT with Michael Whelan. King only signed DT7 but Michael would sign anything. The line went thru for Michael and then went thru again for both to sign DT7.

It was first come-first serve, camp-out/wait in line to get line numbers. Around 200 but he continued to sign for some people who didn't make the cut and hoped to get lucky.

The next year was the New Yorker Festival at Barnes & Noble, Union Square, NYC - 9/24/05. Another camp out for King but other authors were at the festival. Once you got a line number/wrist band you were free to go until 2pm. He signed any two books per person and did personalize if asked. I think 150-200 people. He was located on the second floor of B&N.

Can someone add the events I listed above?... I've never used Google docs, nor have I ever figured out Excel, and I don't want to mess it up.

PS - I also can no longer see the events that were there yesterday.

Looks like a filter was on. You should be able to see all rows now.

I added filtering to it so that it was in order of date. If anything was added to the end but was an earlier date it may have moved up.

There must be a clean and easy way to filter like that, and then save it so it has the date order. Not sure how though. I could only see the last row, until I removed the filter.

EDIT: Using the app, I sorted by date and saved it. I could still view all rows when I closed and went back in.

Forbidden Planet, NY signing April 26, 1983. I got to meet Stephen King for the first time. He signed for me two copies of Christine and two magazines Shayol and Bizarre Adventures. Attached is a flier (found on the internet) with the details. FP used to be across the street from where it is now.

The New Yorker Festival in '05 was a multi-author signing but King required wristbands. You could bring any two books for SK. Most were asking him to flat sign but he would personalize and I asked him to inscribe the books my husband and I brought.

Here are two "oldies" for your list.

Maine State Library October 26, 1979 Not adv. for a specific book, but Dead Zone would have been the latest.

Author of Cujo-University of Georgia ( who are the dogs) a lecture and signing afterwards at the campus bookstore November 5, 1980

One of the columns is 'Official Signing Y/N'. What would an unofficial signing be? If all these events are at bookstores, auditoriums, etc., wouldn't everything be an official signing?

I wondered the same thing

There are signings that King is contractually obligated to do such as the End of Watch signings last year. I would say those are "Official." (They're marked as not official though.:orely:) Then there are signings that King does to help local bookstores, etc., such as the recent End of Watch signing in Sarasota which I assume is not "Official."

We do need some clarity on the purpose of that column.

Unfortunately, we need additional backup, or an on the record statement from someone who was likely to know. Otherwise it's not a reliable enough number for the Catalog.

Bag of Bones Tour
Thurs, Sept.29th (5pm)
Chicago Public Library
Chicago
IL
USA
Chicago Public Library
Official Signing
Books were not presigned, he signed them in front of you
They made a big deal out of telling people not to bring books and that he would only sign Bag of Bones
In reality I saw a guy on the elevator carrying a stack of 5 books, Dark Tower books. He got DT:I - DT:IV signed and if I recall, he even got a copy of Legands signed.
No other authors
It was my first King event. They had a woman with white makeup and white veils circling around moaning like a ghost. King talked and read LT’s of Pets. When I got to King he was wearing a Cubs jersey. We were talking about the Red Sox going to the Post Season (I’m from Boston). Then King showed me that right under the Cubs jersey he was wearing a Sox jersey.

I made a few minor changes to the King event at George Mason University on 9/23/2011. IIRC, each person got one King book of choice signed, but the Golden Ticket allowed 2 people in line, so in effect a person could get 2 signed books (using a mule).

I have seen other copies ( a BC copy of Carrie) in the wild with this same date but that may have been brought in and not actually sold there.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Schermafbeelding_2019-06-10_om_20_30_38.png

The article is from The Baltimore Sun, published on August 26, 1980. Furtheron, the reporter mentions that the interview took place on the second of the two days in New York.

Hard to say when the exact date was of the book signing session at Brentano's, perhaps August 24?

Hope this is of interest.

This week, I acquired a set of photos of a King signing for Firestarter that I was told are from 1980 at the Strawberry Patch.
The pics have good ole bearded Steve at a table with shelves full of FIRESTARTER behind him.
The table has a sign on it which states, "STEPHEN KING IN PERSON MON MARCH 29th".

Is anyone familiar with that store? The little research I did suggested in might have been in Franklin Massechusetts.

I have a question:

I believe King was at a convention on 24 and 25 July 1982. I have images of 18 books signed on those two days. I think Whelan was also there on the 25th, because two of the books are gunslingers signed by both. One inscription is to "Bob, the Invisible Conventioneer".

Does anyone have any idea which convention that might have been? Or where to find that information, or who to ask? I have googled myself silly on this.

thank you!

That would have been Archon 6, July 23-25, 1982 at the Chase-Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis (http://fancyclopedia.org/Archon_6)with guests of honor Stephen King, Tabitha King, Walt Liebscher and toastmaster Robert Bloch.

A few pages of pictures from the con can be found here: http://www.midamericon.org/photoarchive/82archon1.htm

Also present were Joe Haldeman, George R.R. Martin,

Just for the sake of completeness (and in case the ebay link mentioned upthread goes dead),

here's the flyer for the signing at the Regency Bookstore in Omaha in 1979 for The Dead Zone:

yes, that's really a great one, especially with the flyer.

On my site Signed and Dated (https://www.signedanddated.info) I've got 5 in total from that day, including one inscribed to the bookstore owner, thanking him for the fantastic reception.

This is not a signing event on the occasion of a publication of one particular books, but it does seem that King signed what sounds like a few hundred books:

On the 22nd of September 1986 King gave a lecture on the topic of censorship at the invitation of the Friends of the Library from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Before the lecture they sold many pre-autographed books that King all signed in his hotel-room that day.

From George Beahm's SK Companion:

I've seen an IT, a Cujo and a 'Salem's Lot signed on that date.

I would to go to one, but it would be hard and so I don't think it will happen. But it sounds fun.

I got to go to one in Paris in 2013. It was very exciting and a great memory to have but it was all over in about 15 seconds!

Yeah, the best part was spending the night in the cold with other fans lol

(I was there from midnight, already 88th person in line, and the signing was at 1pm. Most people arrived around 9am, and those arriving after 10am roughtly, I would say, had no chance to get a book as there were already too many people. The funnier part was that, in the morning, when my phone ran out of battery, my good contact at the publisher told me that I could have told her and she would have me bypass the line without having to spend the night there :D )

Remember it well. I was 89th person in line, but we swapped places.
