Disappointed there's no New England appearance - but I'm glad for the fans in those places that they're getting some attention...obviously, they're outside the literary mainstream.

But yeah, the value of the signed book won't be that high....that's a lot of books that will be floating around.

I'm looking at possibly going to Nashville because it's a weekend. Unfortunately I'm using a ton of vacation time in June/July, so taking a couple of weekdays off will be difficult. Luckily, I have good friends 15 minutes from the PA signing, and my sister lives an hour from Dayton. So, I'm sure I'll have them go to those signings for me.

I am new to book signings. I know the Revival event was all pre-signed, but that wasn't a "book tour". Would you assume these would be signed in front of us?

8 hours to Tulsa...tempting.

Likely Tulsa for me, though I might still play with a couple other options. It's a relief to know that I'll be able to complete the 2/3's complete set somewhat easily, I was sweating whether I'd be able to afford an End Of Watch at what I paid for Mr. Mercedes.

AstroDad, if you're coming through Dallas, and don't mind the company, perhaps we can carpool?

If I go and I drive I will definitely let you know, but SW has some pretty decent fares right now, looks like I could fly round trip for $220 or so. That sounds worth it over 16 hours of driving to me lol.

Agreed, I'm in NE too but I'm also glad that these places get a chance as well. He did some in Maine the last couple of years(went to the Portland Revival one)so it's good he's showing fans from all over some love. I honestly don't know that I would do another signing anyway. I have his signature on a few things and to wait in line for 5-6 hours to get tickets for essentially a 10 second encounter, eh. What I would like to do is go to a speaking event. He spoke briefly at UMO a couple of years back for the Ghost Brothers tour but not very long. I'd like to hear him go for an hour or so and hear a reading. That I haven't been able to witness yet!
I'm happy for everyone that goes!

P.S. PA would be the closest to me, if anyone sees what they're doing when the details come out please give me a shout out as I don't always have time to be on the net. If it's a meet and greet/speaking engagement that may have to come to fruition :)

Hmm, 12 straight days without a break?! Do you think these might be Reading/Speaking spots with luck of the draw presigned book events? Depending on the size of each event, this just sounds incredibly optimistic if they are signings.

I'd definitely consider roadtripping up with any of the Texas/I-35 folks to the Tulsa event as details emerge.

I really enjoyed the intimate affair in Maine last summer. GREAT way to meet a lot of members and it was a great get away for me and the wife. I think your right.. with the 12 dates you won't get members all in the same place at all. Still lots of meet ups for sure.. VERY JEALOUS!!!

Agree RF.. I was just using the simple math of 300 books per venue and it is 3600++++. The market will be saturated. The value of Mercedes will go up too I think.... $800ish... Finders... $450ish EOW... $150ish.

I'm not going for profit. I just think it's a reasonable drive to attend one of his book signings. I'll probably just try to trade my extra copy for another signed 1st.

I was thinking of all three of these dates but learning here that he will probably only be signing EOW (if in fact it is a signing, was hoping to get the others signed); Tulsa is perfect for me. Literally right down the road :).

Dayton not too far also. These are the three for me, was thinking of the Vegas meet up in June this changes all for me. My sister lives in Vegas, Mother is in Louisville (just moved from Vegas last year} and have a brother in Nashville, I must pass thru Dayton on way to both.

I can't believe all the author love Iowa City is getting this spring/summer. Joe Hill in May, Justin Cronin probably in May/June (he always makes a stop there shortly after a book release), and then King himself in June.

It looks like it's going to be a good year to be living here (assuming I don't miss out on tickets...)

Will be my first. I feel a very strong draw to attend at least one. SK isn't getting any younger and I feel the time is growing short to see him in living color. Regardless if the book he signs wouldn't be worth much or it will only be a 10 second window if he indeed will be signing books live; it's all about the experience for me. Probably not a big deal to a lot of super fans but a pretty humbling experience for a small time collector from the Midwest. And a check off the old bucket list :).

400 "Randomly" distributed?

What is the capacity of the B&N in Reno? Are they using a local hall (substantially more than 400 capacity), somewhat like King did in Boulder, CO. If so that sucks.

That is our next mission. Boulder Colorado stank, New York venue sitting 600 was better, but bookstore employees gobbled up several (dozen).

The Reno Event Center seats 7,000.
The Reno Convention Center seats 50 to 36,000.

That's pretty good odds...

IT does RF. I have to agree my man... a lot of work/travel for some and maybe not even get a book. I was just saying on another thread... that's about 5000 books he has to sign!!!!

I talked to Penguin Bookstore in PA. They were given the guidance to secure a location for the reading that would have a capacity between 500-1000 people. So, in that instance, the odds of a signed book are very good.

AGREED. Shaq even asked me why i wasnt commenting about the tour. Too much speculation. NOT enough details even now! I always go to the events to hear KING speak, bonus is getting a book signed. The whole reason i made the trip to FLORIDA was because KING and Grisham where my favorite two authors in my twenties! NO expectation of getting into VIP event or getting a book signed. BONUS! I was able to do both!

As I understand it, bookstores are sponsoring the events but they need to find off-site venues with enough capacity. So this is a Booksmart event, but held in a ballroom.

No definite details available in Albuquerque. Spoke with a very nice employee of the book store who said the venue was not locked down yet but the one they were hoping to get has a seating capacity of 2,300. Details will be posted on their website as soon as they were available. She said tickets would be about $30 and you get a book (not guaranteed to be signed) with your ticket.

Yes. I think that is right. 400 signed copies at each venue. Patrons will randomly get what is left of the 400 after the book store employees get all they can carry off.

Random distribution is the absolute worst option. Most people leave disappointed. The cost and expense of traveling doesn't make sense at those odds if you have seen King before and primarily want a signed book. eBay will be flooded at about a third of the expense of travel, time off from work etc.

My thoughts exactly. Plus as RF pointed out the bookstore employees likely poach books from the pile.

It all depends on what you make of it. If a SK fan has never been to an event where he gives a speech/interview, they are missing a bucket list item.
It's a CBA.

I was actually joking. I'm sure each place is slightly different, but it's hard to imagine employees/volunteers poaching a significant number of signed books. King often signs a few dozen extra books specifically for people working the event.

As collectors and Fans of Stephen King we were spoiled with getting to meet SK. We got to sit in the front row and hear him talk and get our picture taken.

two quick stories.

I met a fan that attended the Hartford event. School teacher, she was thrilled to fly to Conn without her husband, they could not afford two tickets, she was excited to sit in the balcony of the event to see Stephen king, no book signing or anything. My wife gave her ticket ($250 ticket) to the lady to meet SK at the Mark Twain house. She started crying. PS at Hartford Event met a lady whose husband was sick, gave my wife her extra ticket and told us to keep the book. -unrelated, but i had to keep moving the ladies drink off her signed copy of JOYLAND. She was using it as coaster. And she thought i was the crazy one!

#2 Went to the NY Dr. Sleep event random book distribution. SK and Owen read from their books, event lasted less than 75 minutes. I was so disappointed until talking with David at Betts Books, his daughter got to HEAR and SEE Stephen King read from his book! It was an honor to hear him read! Changed my outlook on that event immediately.

If you have never seen him before and this is your one chance, then it's great. But I think a lot of folks on this board have been fortunate to see him before. It's the signed book that is the draw and ebay is a much better option than the hassle and expense of travel and over zealous book store employees searching everyone like the Pope is coming. It can be great or not no so great depending on your expectations.

This is unofficial, but per Tulsa BooksMart facebook page, it looks like the Tulsa event is going to be at Cain's Ballroom which holds 1,250 people. So if they pack it to capacity and all 400 books fairly go to the attendees, there will be about a 1 in 3 chance of getting a signed book in Tulsa. This is just all deduction, perhaps the reality will be different. ><

Well it looks like getting a room the night before in RENO might be a good idea. The store is in the process of putting together the event details and it should be posted on their site within the next week or so.

Looks like the actual event will be early afternoon around 1300 (thats 1 pm ;) )

Tickets/armbands will be distributed starting around 0800 that morning...somewhere

We will be staying in South Shore Lake Tahoe for the weekend and thats about an hour drive to the B&N in Reno (after a 2 hr 45 min drive from home to South Shore). Not sure how happy my wife will be to get in the care around 0400 Saturday to head over...I might just break the news on the drive up Friday night

I think I'll have to agree with you, my friend. I've "met" him several times and received his signature in person. Time to let others have their chance if, they have not had it before. Easier to just pay for the book than to factor in travel expenses, lodging and odds. Though, it would be great to visit with, Dolso. Hopefully, I can talk him into, Vegas and maybe buy a ticket for a family member of his to attend!!! LOL

I was just talking to Shac today about how great it would be to get some forum members together in Nashville, but I know that with this format few will be traveling. Myself, I've never been to a King event (in fact, the Justin Cronin event today was my first reading/signing) and Nashville is only an hour away, so it's a no brainer for me, even without the guarantee of a signed book. I plan to take my youngest nephew along with me to increase my odds a bit, haha.

He is not signing any books at these events. They are randomly handing out presigned books. Depending on the size of the crowd you probably have about one chance in three of getting a signed copy. The best to get older books signed are book festivals.

I'll be coming out of a week-long camping trip in the mountains with my sons and was toying with the idea of leaving camp and driving the 5 hours directly to Reno for the event that night. The drive home the next day would be another five hours. But hearing that the event will start at 1 pm (vs. evening) and, more importantly, only a fraction of the audience will obtain a signed book, I'll pass on this one.

Ouch...that venue seats 1,883 people.

$20 per ticket makes me wonder if every ticket gets a book (400 signed and 1,483 unsigned).....or if only 400 people get signed books, and the other 1,483 get nothing (beyond the entertainment).

:wtf:The cover price on The End of Watch is $30.00 (I have never seen a King event sell books for less then cover price) so it looks to me that the venue will cost $20.00 each & a book signed or unsigned will be another $30.00

1,883 seats (900 plus couples)So not every attendee will BUY or get a book....Just those who WANT to BUY them.( I assume most couples will only buy 1 book... so with these tactics how many books will the bookstore eat? ) (Sounds like there may be signed books at the bookstore after the venue unless they decide to list them on EBAY :evil:IMHO:lol::lol::lol:

Will all 12 venues be charging $20.00 a head to get in?

It's actually not the same thing at all, especially for the publisher / venue.

Charging $20, means that the venue may get 10 or 15, or maybe all of it.
If you charge $30 and you give a book to everybody : or the publisher reduces its margin, or it's the venue that don't get anything which I think defeats the purpose.

At least half of those attending this event will actually buy the book (half because of couples going together). I know that it would be a drop in the million of copies sold within a couple of weeks, but... still. Business is business

If it's a sellout the bookstore will get their normal percentage.... times 1,883 (Seems like a nice profit to me)

Wholesale for SK books is usually ~60% of retail. Gross profit (before rent, payroll, utillities.....etc.) of 40%.
$30 x 40%= $12.
$12 x 1,883 = $22,596.
True P&L net is probably >10%

You would be surprised. When King came to my neighborhood (which isn't exactly the literary capital of the world) for the UTD tour, it was packed (and King even stayed after the allotted time to sign extra books for those without a wristband).

The description said "The first people who purchase tickets will be assigned front row seating and we will continue to fill the rows in the order that the tickets were purchased." I assume that won't have any impact on who gets a signed copy, but hopefully helps with not needing binoculars to see Sai King.

My confirmation is timestamped 2:01 but I used Paypal and got an update at 3:10 saying it was processed. I don't know if this will affect where I sit or not. I'm guessing they are either going to hand out copies randomly upon exit or give you a ticket/card like a lottery that will tell you if you get a signed or unsigned.

So, what's the probability to get a signed book if you buy 2 tickets for this event assuming 1,400 tickets sold ?

Randall Flagg

400 divided by 1,400 =28.5%
That means there are two separate 28.5% chances. They don't double by two and equal 57%

I threw caution to the wind and just bought 2 tix to the Jersey City event just now...I likely will NOT get a signed copy, but felt I HAD to be there regardless. Likely taking my daughter, but who knows, maybe my wife will want to go! If it is like the NYC event,,,,I expect workers to skim signed books from the pile, reducing chances for everyone.

Here's the scoop on ABQ: http://stephenking.com/promo/end-of-watch/book-tour/#Bookworks

I just called and got more information on this signing. Some of it doesn't seem to add up logistically.

She said that they are allowing each person to buy up to 4 tickets, which would get you four books. She said that you didn't need 4 people if you have 4 tickets. They are capping the ticket sales at around 2253. The venue actually seats around 2500 people. I think they are going to run into problems of people buying a lot of extra tickets and they will have a lot of empty seats but who knows.

She said that the books would be randomly distributed at the end of the event while people exit. You will turn in your ticket and get a copy of the book.

Im a little on the fence if I am going to drive from Phoenix for this. I'm still leaning towards yes just to see him speak but the chances of getting a signed book are a bit low with that many tickets going out.

It's possible that people who are "checking to see if it is sold out" are temporarily creating a sold-out situation by having tickets in the basket and then releasing them or allowing them to time out.

I'd stopped in to Prairie Lights last week to ask when more details would be available, and the guy I talked to had told me to keep an eye on their website for times and instructions after they met with King's people to finalize everything. He said I probably wouldn't want to wait too long once tickets went on sale, because they figured it would sell out in a couple days. Apparently they underestimated his popularity, or the fact that people would be willing to make a fairly long drive based on the odds of obtaining a signed copy.

My wife braved the cold and wind to go to the box office. They told her the online allotment had sold out in 8 minutes. That was at 12:55 while she was in line. She was still able to get 2, so it looks like they held back some for the in-person and phone orders.

Yes, I got lucky on this one (beyond the fact my wife was willing to spend her lunch break in line). The store and venue are only about a 10 minute drive from me.
While she was heading in, I had managed to snag a pair online for my parents- I made sure to keep 12:30 meeting-free for lunch and already had the page open. I refreshed it immediately and got them ordered without any issues - within a few minutes. I didn't realize how lucky that purchase was until my wife told me about the 8 minute sell-out. I'm glad I didn't wait and count on the 2-day sellout projection

Prairie Lights gets some pretty big names coming in on a regular basis. They've always had some critically-praised literary names coming in due to the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop being in town, but the last few years they seem to be pulling in some more widely known and commercially successful names as well - I think it's probably related to being named one of UNESCO's Cities of Literature and to the more vocal push by author's to support Indie bookstores.

My question is are these events going to honor a book per ticket or a book per person per ticket.

Louisville event Carmichael’s Bookstore is thrilled to host Stephen King, one of the most prolific and beloved writers of our time. Our event will take place at Iroquois Amphitheater on Sunday, June 12th at 7 PM.

Mr. King will discuss his work and read from the third volume in his Bill Hodges Trilogy, End of Watch. He will also take questions from the audience. End of Watch will be released on June 7th just days before his appearance in Louisville. We’ll finish up the evening with a showing of one of the most popular films based on his work,
Stand By Me.

Tickets for this event are $32 each and include general admission to the event and a hardcover copy of End of Watch. Mr. King will not be signing after the event, however 400 lucky ticket holders’ copies will be autographed in advance. Distribution of the signed books will be completely random.

Tickets will go on sale to the public on Saturday, March 26th but because you are on our events email list, you can buy tickets now using the promo code “Hodges”. Click the button above to visit the amphitheater’s ticket webpage. Enter the promo code “Hodges”. Tickets can also be purchased by calling Ticketfly at 1-877-987-6487. Next time put stickum on your hands. You'd only be harming the dust jacket.

I am still trying to figure out why the Nashville bookstore cannot hurry up and announce something already. They even have a banner on their website: "Stephen King is Coming to our store". But on the heels of that "Sign up for our newsletter to get updates".
Fair enough. I signed up for your newsletter, just freaking tell me something already. :arg:

Anyone else having trouble buying tickets this morning to the Albuquerque event? I can't get through on the website (keeps saying "Access Denied") and the phone, of course, is busy. Frustrating.

Edit: Finally got through at 9:20 Mountain after trying for 20 minutes.

Another edit: For what it is worth I think that the webpage for ordering didn't actually go live until around 9:20 AM Mountain. I had talked to someone at the store earlier who told me it would be live at 9:00 AM but I don't think that it was. After I got through with my order I went back and could get through several times with ease.

Anyone else confirmed for Albuquerque? I will be at the Albuquerque event in lieu of the trip to Las Vegas.

Well this is an interesting thread and I'll add my hopes. I am going to try and get tickets for Omaha as my work may be allowing me to pass through on those dates. Details are not posted yet and I probably won't confirm opportunity until Tuesday. Anyways, if it is meant to be it is meant to be.

Until the tickets are released I sit and wait...

Details on the Pennsylvania event have been announced -

The Penguin Bookshop Presents...

"An Evening with Stephen King"
***
Wednesday, June 8th, 7:00PM
Doors will open at 6:00PM
Event will be held at:
Sewickley Academy's Rea Auditorium
315 Academy Avenue
Sewickley, PA 15143

• Due to capacity limits, each person is allowed to purchase a maximum of 2 tickets.

• Purchasing a ticket guarantees entry to the event as well as a hardcover edition of END OF WATCH. As a special bonus, a limited number of attendees will randomly receive signed copies, so we wish you luck! All books (signed and unsigned) will be distributed at the end of the event.

• Seating will be assigned. Purchasers of the Premium tickets (limited) will be seated in the first two rows of the auditorium. Those who purchase General Assigned Seating tickets will be assigned a specific seat (no specific seat requests will be allowed) and we will fill the rows in the order that the tickets are purchased. While we will try our absolute best to accommodate groups of 2 next to each other, there is a possibility that you and your plus one will be seated in different rows (though likely close together, directly in front/behind each other).

• Ticket sales will take place on three consecutive days:
-Sunday, April 17th, 11AM - 3PM at the Penguin Bookshop only
(no on-line or phone orders).
-Monday, April 18th, 10AM - 6PM at the Penguin Bookshop only
(no on-line or phone orders).
-Tuesday, April 19th starting at 10AM we will begin selling any remaining tickets over the phone.
-We will not be selling any tickets on-line.

Note: We will NOT take phone calls on April 17 or 18.

• Ticket Prices:
$38.00 General Assigned Seating
$50.00 Friends of the Penguin priority seating* (limited availability)
*2 seats will be donated to the Sewickley Academy Auction.

We are unable to offer refunds for any reason.

All tickets include a copy of End of Watch.

Stephen King will pre-sign 400 copies of End of Watch, which will be handed out randomly after the conclusion of his talk. NO ONE IS GUARANTEED A SIGNED BOOK.

Stephen will be talking, reading from END OF WATCH, and doing a Q&A. He will NOT be signing books at this event. Event will last approximately one hour.

For all of you who are coming to Sewickley for the Sunday, April 17 in-store ticket sale, we ask that you are considerate while waiting in line outside the store, that you do NOT save spaces for friends/family, that you respect the community, and that you are patient and kind to all those concerned with the ticket sales at the Penguin Bookshop.
