Pure and Simple.....I love Jae Lee's work and I own quite a bit of it. Jae, as many of you know, worked for Marvel Comics and was chosen as the artist a number of years back when Stephen King decided to do the Dark Tower story in comic book form, starting with Gunslinger Born.

A little back story.....before the first issue of Gunslinger Born even saw the light of day, I became interested in the project. I was working in New York City at the time and did an internet search of Jae and actually found an email address for him. I emailed Jae, telling him who I was, a HUGE Dark Tower junkie and learned that Jae lived in New York City close to Central Park. We "conversed" by email several times and he agreed to meet me in the lobby of his apartment complex, so I went over one day on my lunch hour. The following picture was taken that day:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/IMG_1940.jpg

One thing led to another and Jae offered to sell me the entire artwork set for the first ARC of the Gunslinger Born story....for a mere $20,000. That was WAY WAY more than anything I could afford at the time but I told Jae (who had privately shared many of the pencils he had already done) I was interested in purchasing several items. He told me he had a solid dealer (Albert Moy) but that given my passion, he would deal with me directly, and so he sold me several art pieces BEFORE they were even released by Marvel....(I will hunt up any images I have in my collection folder and post below)....I ended up buying (from the Sketch Book), the character study he did of Roland, Cuthbert and Alain (the ka-tet) and I also bought Eldred Jonas character sketch....also I bought the cover piece to the Dark Tower Guide Book (Gilead) and I bought an interior piece of Roland standing over Cort after Roland bested Cort in battle.

That was the beginning of my relationship with Jae....as the Gunslinger Born issues were released...each issue has 2 Variant covers, one black and white by Jae and a color on by another artist, Jae happily agreed to sign EVERY copy that came out for me.

Soon thereafter, Jae moved to Las Vegas (remaining with Marvel), but I lost my close proximity to him. Then members here organized a Las Vegas weekend get-together and I was able to invite Jae to Jerome's room (I think it was Jerome's room) and Jae signed people's stuff and posed for pictures (see below).

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Jae_and_David1.JPG

After Vegas though, I made a HUGE mistake.....I asked Jae by email (after returning East) if he would sign the rest of my DT comics and a few of the hardcover books. He agreed but STUPID ME was greedy and I sent him 2 big boxes of stuff....he then politely told me he had contracts with Marvel that limited the number of items he could sign and he shipped both boxes back to me unsigned....I think I pissed him off and I will NEVER make such a mistake again.

Jae was chose (to the surprise of many) to be the artist for Wind Through the Key Hole....Donald Grant Publishing has a good relationship with Jae and has gotten him to do many remarques in WTTKH books....I will organize my Jae collection and post those pics later.

In the meantime, here are some other Jae Lee special things I own, pencil sketches and inscribed HC Gunslinger books:

Alain Johns:

Cuthbert Allgood:

Roland Bests Cort:

Perhaps my favorite inscription of all my books in my collection:

Another DT book:

Same book with added Robin Furth inscription:

That's it to start this Jae Lee thread. I will gather my remarqued WTTKH books, take pics and post those images later.

Long Days and Pleasant Nights Gunslingers!

Very cool, David! I've been a fan of Jae Lee since the early '90's. Great stuff.

Sensational. You must have been like a kid in a candy shop. I'm glad to see passionate folks like yourself get these kinds of opportunities. Just rewards for a lifetime of commitment. Super stuff. Keep them coming. I love that Eldred and Gilead, and Cort, and, well, the whole lot! Great stuff David.

Many of you know this story, but I GIFTED that Roland besting Cort art piece to my daughter, Sage, on her 14th birthday accompanied by a 1st edition Gunslinger inscribed "For Sage, a young gun on her way to the Dark Tower, Stephen King" as at the tender age of 11 she had the courage to step up and "out" a sexual predator that was preying on her best friend. He subsequently was sent to prison and forbidden from contact with the girl for 50 years....so when my daughter turned 14, I wrote her a long detailed letter "making" her the first female Gunslinger and the youngest ever (ever beating Roland who was 14+ when he won his guns).

I remember the story but seeing it again is GREAT!
I have only one or two pages of his work on the series, but I too like his artwork.

Great story, thanks for sharing ! And big hands to your little girl !!
I love your collection, and especially the Cort art!

Its definitive long due that a Jae Lee topic was started, so thanks a lot David!

Already a fan of his art for many years, i won the Dark Tower / Roland Artwork that was donated for the HF 2015.
Even if winning the artwork was sadly marred a bit, it was my first artwork, and I value it a lot!

Lucky me it was not my last ;D

I found out, that a fan made a video AND put it on youtube, while he was drawing exactly the artwork i won later, (what are the odds ???)
so if you want to watch him @ work - it's here

Youtube:

Later i bought an already remarked Artist edition, with a simpler, but not less cool portrait

I met Jae in Vienna this year, and can confirm all of the above.
He is a fantastic guy to deal with, and you should get every chance you have to at least met him once.

Made a pre-show commission arrangement for a very reasonable price, and got my UK S/L Wind remarqued with a
fantastic young roland and got all my comics signed while he was there. (obviously i did not hit the "hard-cap" ;D)

http://www.stephenkingcollector.com/pictures/Random_remarques/January2016/wttkh-large.jpg

He took a lot of time for each fan at the convention, especially for the little once,
and so everybody got the chance to chat a little about art, comics, girls, or whatever you wanted to discuss.

Yes indeed , it was very surprising when he got the Job for WTTKH, and the comic, but he definitive nailed both outstanding.

Would love to see him again when someday the "The battle" - or whatever the next Dark Tower will be called - will hit the stores ;D

Jae is my favorite comic book artist and one of my top 3 overall artists. His style is easily recognizable and so different than the mainstream comic artist. I have a few of his original pages as well (not DT related though) and they are wonderful pages. I'm glad you started a thread for his work David.

No disrespect to, Jae Lee but, Richard Isanove never seems to garner much praise for his work and I really kinda like it. So, for a different perspective, variation or whatever here are some really cool pieces he did for me in the comics. I really LOVE these and, Jae is still "Da Man", but this guy deserves recognition of sorts IMHO......

Remember that time we all became comic book collectors for a while and overpaid for variant covers because we didn't fully understand that market?

That made me laugh. This is a great way to describe the two boxes of comics I have sitting under my desk at home. Fortunately, I didn't bother with many variants, but I bought every Stephen King and Joe Hill comic I could find. Can't hardly give them away now.

Just wait till a movie gets made. These should see a nice bump up in value (the first issues anyway).
