I didn't think the first two were anything special, either. First one was okay until I rewatched it and saw all it's flaws.

I really enjoyed the first. But for me that's another instance where they should have left it a single film and not made any more.

Insidious Chapter 3

What a horrible movie

I didn't think it was horrible (I liked what they did with Elise's character a lot), but it was definitely low on the scares and not very memorable.

I thought the whales were well done. They looked pretty real to me. Ron did leave out part of the story where they accidentally set fire to one of the islands and caused the extinction of a species of bird and tortoise. At least that's what I read.

How was The Forest Becca?

The whole family enjoyed it. It was creepy but not super scary - more psychological. There were some jump out scares though. The only thing I didn't like was a cheesy effect at the end... don't want to spoil it though.

What did you think of Inherent Vice, killjoy?
I liked it, thought it was pretty good. Stoner comedy meets detective noir- what a combination! Although I have to admit I got a bit lost at times. Deserves a rewatch at some point when I can pay closer attention. I haven't seen many PT Anderson flicks, which I plan to remedy this year.

I hope you have seen the 1965 version also?

Nope. I never heard of either one until I caught the remake on TV. I'll have to check it out too.

What a GREAT MOVIE....One of the BEST jump scares in movie history....If & when you get a chance to see this film see it on the biggest screen & darkest room.

It's funny. I only saw that lots of people consider that scene one of the best jump scares after I saw the movie and was looking on IMDB. I guess because I've seen so many movies, it didn't have the effect as it might've back then when it was rather new.

I assume you were sitting in a well lite living room & looking at a T.V. set. Believe me the whole audience JUMPED out of there seats. After my mother got home from seeing it after I had recommended it. Asked if I was trying to kill my DEAR MOTHER?

I feel like an idiot because I still haven't seen Inherent Vice. I was really excited to see it last year. In fact, I showed up at the theater ready to see the film, only for them to tell me it was gone. A mixup on their website.

I think you'll like it. It's a surreal stoner comedy with just the right amount of noir. Not his best work, but like Tarantino each one of PTA's films unquestionably bear his mark.

Nope. It's one of those situations where it just never worked out. It's always funny how that happens for certain films. I will find it in my travels and pick it up cheap on DVD.

That's awesome! I really hope you have somebody in your family that appreciates this stuff. My Godfather has a collection very similar to yours, except he doesn't display them as nice as you do, they're all in cardboard boxes. He has said before that he's leaving them all to me because I'm the only person that appreciates it.

I can guarantee you that all those hundreds and hundreds of DVDs and VHS tapes will be coming out of those stupid cardboard boxes.

The Big Short was a lot of fun. It deals with some very serious subject matter, but it never takes itself too seriously. I'm not going to lie, the film can get very heavy on the financial jargon, but it's self aware of that and has some pretty clever ways of explaining things. The performances alone are worth a watch if you're on the fence.

No, not at all. The film doesn't take itself too seriously. I think if they played it straight, then with this subject matter, it could have been really boring and lost a lot of people. The film has a very unique feel to it. There's a lot of fourth wall breaking and a few more interesting things along the way that keeps it fresh.

oh good Lord, what an unexpected "hi" from the past! I watched that film when I was maybe, I don't know, eight years old, because it was one of the few films from abroad released in what was called the Soviet Union at that time... and we watched everything that was available, of course, no matter how old we were or what genre it was. It's such a faint memory that I have some problem believing it actually exists, especially since that title - "the quiller memorandum" became kind of a meme here, meaning a long written or spoken piece, and still exists as such among people of my generation or older

Haha, very interesting Jean! I had never heard of this film myself, but with Alec Guinness and Max Von Sydow I couldn't resist! Not a bad flick, you should try revisiting it.

I apologize, needfulthings, I was unaware there were multiple versions. You were correct in assuming it was the Arnold version.

For what it's worth, I agree with Still Servant that the Big Short was not boring at all and done in an interesting way. The directorial choices are certainly unique and unconventional.

Yeah, what was your favorite?

Living in Connecticut, I have a particular interest in Newtown.

I also like how you guys have hope that Rob Zombie can actually make a good film. It hasn't happened in 10 years.

I thoroughly dug 31... and i'm not even really that big a fan of Zombie's directing style and genre. I mean i really like him as an multi level artist (painter, musician, filmmaker), it's just i'm not as big a fan of the exploitation horror films. I like my horror more cerebral and visceral.

31 was really a sight to see, though. It still is pure cult and over the top, but visually it was very kinetic and gory. There was one strobe light scene where i almost thought i was gonna have a seizure, LOL. Crazy visual spectacle.

here is pretty much the plot conceit (and please DONT open this if you dont want anything spoiled!)

the film is pretty much The Running Man set in a horror setting on Halloween. The main characters get captured and made to play a Game engineered by Malcom McDowell's character.

At the Q & A, Rob Zombie seemed wickedly smart and was very witty. The guy is certainly a Renaissance Man.

The film definitely seemed like he was pushing the envelope, going for more gore and visual stimulation.

Im sure the haters of his style might hate it but the crazy culties are gonna love it.

My Favorite so far has been White Girl

Very reminiscent of the Hyper-realism of KIDS (and shot bythe same production company)

I still have a lot to see though.

Gonna try and get into Birth of a Nation tomorrow.

How was SLEIGHT?

Sleight was good, but not great. DOPE from last year was better. It is getting way tough to make a Hood movie that isnt played out, but i think Sleight did a good job of making a new twist on it. The conceit is a little fantastic, so some suspension of disbelief is in order, but i still though it was pretty cool and the acting was good.

It should be noted that Sleight was in the NEXT category which means low budget/ no stars and usually newer filmmakers. I've certainly seen way worse films in that category.

Not that I've seen. I've only seen 1 week trials. What my sister and I did with The Mindy Project is we waited for a bunch of episodes to air, then we got the free trial and binged on the episodes (6). We then cancelled the subscription so it doesn't lapse. I might do the same for 11/22/63. Then again, I might just get a subscription for real. Oh no. Someone in my family saw it last night and said it was pretty much the "boy version" of Annabelle. I don't know if that's true but I wouldn't have a problem with it. I really liked that one.

I thought the twist in The Boy would be that the parents were treating the doll like a real child because their own child died, but went back and watched the trailer and that's stated flat-out. It had been a while since I first saw it.

Were you able to at least take advantage of the free shipping? That's always something I thought might come in handy.

Yep, that's the one thing I miss the most about it. Especially since they increased the amount you have to spend now to get the free shipping. Also I got to borrow 1 free book a month for my kindle which was nice.

How were they Becca? We're going to check out the animated shorts tomorrow.

I really want to see those but they are at terrible times here. The documentaries were really good but very depressing, especially The Girl in the River - but I think that one has the best chance to win.

Yeah, I was reading the synopsis and they all sounded depressing. Do they show the live action ones near you as well? They usually play all 3 here but I've only ever gone to the animated ones.

Yes, we have an indy theatre that shows them all but this year they are not mixing up the times. The animated shorts are during the day.

That's too bad. We went yesterday to go see them, and got there only to find out that they've been sold out for a few days :( I never thought of checking because we've always just gone and gotten right in. They must be gaining popularity. Of course they have it in the tiniest room ever which only has 25 seats, so hopefully with the demand they'll move it to one of their larger rooms.

Unfortunately, yes. Mainly on the border cities tho -- Tijuana, Juarez, Matamoros.

When we used to take family vacations to Mexico in vehicle we always planned it so that we would pass whichever border city we were cutting through during the day.

Haha, I'll bet! It really is addictive. They play some great movies on there.

How was joy? Torrents all seem to be missing 16 mins so haven't bothered. I'm a big O. Russell fan so I'll probably enjoy it despite what I've heard.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the critics were talking about. It's the rare time where I scratch my head at the consensus reviews on a film. I'm not sure what they were looking for, but Joy is way better than most of the reviews it received. It's not one of O. Russell's best films, but it's strong. Lawrence is fantastic as usual, she really knows how to work with O. Russell, their work relationship might be one of the best actor/director relationships in film history.

The Martian is one of those films I put in the category with films where there's really not a whole lot to dislike. I have yet to talk to somebody that hated it.

It's Leo's year, fer sure. If he doesn't get the nod this year, I'm convinced the selection committee has a personal vendetta against him. Don't get me wrong, Matt Damon was superb in THE MARTIAN, but the role was much less complex.

Yeah, I'll have to take out my box set now too! They had a "Rip Your Heart Out Valentine's Day Marathon" on the El Rey Network last weekend, hosted by Robert Englund. It only went up to 5 for some reason (plus an episode of Freddy's Nightmares!), then started over again.

You've been on a horror kick Ricky :) Without giving any spoilers away can you just tell me if The Boy was good or bad? I'm dying to see it, but I doubt I'll make it out to the theaters for it.

Ricky
02-20-2016, 08:20 AM
If I had to lump it into one category ("Good" or "Bad"), it'd say it's good. It keeps your interested and does a couple new things with the creepy doll sub-genre, but I didn't really care for the twist. I thought it'd be a lot creepier than it was, too. I think you'd enjoy it for what it is, especially if you go in with the idea that it's more of a mystery than a horror film. It does have a few unsettling moments, though.

Let me know what you think if you're able to make it to the theater.

It was ok. I've never watched or read The Goosebumps series, but I was a big R.L. Stine fan growing up. I loved his cameo at the end.

Food, Inc. is one of the scariest films I've ever seen.

I agree. It was horrifying. It's upsetting, all the stuff they can get away with.

Yeah, I've heard it was more atmospheric than outright scary. Which I'm fine with as long as it's a good story and some creepiness.

Even speaking as a Kevin Smith fan, I thought it was terrible. But it's only about an hour long & currently streaming on Netflix, so...

I haven't seen that since high school, but I remember really liking it.
No, this just felt really half-assed and pointless. I do love his pod casts, though.

Is it strange that I prefer the '78 remake to the original? I thought it was really well done. I mean come on, what a great cast!

Let me know what you think Ricky. I love the first and have been wanting to watch the 78 version for some time.

Just watched it today. I wasn't too thrilled with it. I liked the opening, the effects, and the addition of some scenes from the book that the 1956 version left out, but it was a little slow (and maybe a little too long). I think the main thing that makes the earlier version better is it's paced better (even though it changes some things from the book), and the black-and-white, small town atmosphere just suits it better.

If you loved the first, I'm not too sure that you'll like the 1978 version better.

Next is The Invasion. I saw it when it came out but it's been awhile.

Thanks Ricky. I've never read the book, I'll have to check it out.
