It's time! This thread will serve to nominate and discuss the tracks for the tournament that were released between January 1, 1975 and December 31, 1979. Keep in mind that your nomination must have been initially released within this time-frame. Singles can often be released earlier or later than the album, so double check things like Wikipedia. When nominating and seconding, please follow these guidelines:

You can nominate one track per post, and you can nominate another track after two other members have made their nominations (per thread).
You can second one track per post, and you can second another track after two other tracks have been seconded (per thread).
Each nomination should be supported by a video, illustrating the song being nominated.
The video must be the version of the track being nominated (so no live versions, covers, re-recordings, or remixes).

To reiterate from the announcement post (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?19369), to make a nomination, please use the following format: ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR). A nomination should also be supported by a video, illustrating the song being nominated (though not necessarily the song's official video, especially if it contains a lengthy pre-song scene). Most tracks can be found on YouTube, and that's preferred, but other video hosting services can be used, which can be embedded with your nomination. If you can't find your pick, send me a PM and I will try to locate it for you. However, please do not simply post a link or embed the video so it appears on the page. Since there will be lots of nominations per page and lots of videos, this will be too much to handle for most computers, slowing down the page tremendously. So to make your nomination, please hide the embedded video using the SPOIL tags (using this spoiler option: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/icons/spoiler.gif) Don't forget to remove the s in https when embedding YouTube links. Also, the youtu.be sharing shortcut will not work. We need the full address (just without the s in https).

All you need to do is first click the "Insert Video" icon: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/editor/video.png. Paste your YouTube link, remove the s in https and click OK. The link should stay selected, so click the black SPOIL button, enter your ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR) into the field which appears, click OK, and you're done.

To illustrate, a sample nomination should look like this (and this track is not eligible, since it's from 2015):

Or, simply use the below template (fill in the red placeholders):

ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR)"]

I've been nominating a few electronic classics with little success as yet, but here's a masterpiece that must be in the conversation as one of the greatest electronic albums of all time. And I'll do another multi-part Pink Floyd nomination:

http://vimeo.com/29691660

The most famous and popular part of this long suite is Part 2, but it always feels off to me, because if you just listen to Part 2 without the buildup, it's like coming in after the movie has started and you're trying to make sense of it. So to me "Another Brick in the Wall" has always been one long piece (especially since the first three pieces all flow together on the album):

Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1
The Happiest Days of Our Lives
Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2
Another Brick in the Wall, Part 3

There are several "complete" versions on YouTube but all were blocked, except one, which is in atrocious quality. The video above under spoilers contains the full suite, plus it's bracketed by "The Thin Ice" and "Goodbye Cruel World" (about 2:30 at the start and 0:50 at the end), which I wouldn't consider part of the thing, so feel free to ignore that. But it all flows nicely together. If you wish, simply make your judgment based on Part 2, but I think it works so much better as a whole.

I'm not a huge fan of the genre either, but I like stuff that's good, but that mainly comes in the early '90s for me (Ice Cube, Coolio, Snoop Dogg, etc.).

What sort of Christmas would it be without Santa Klaus? Klaus Schulze, to be exact! (Yes, I have been waiting for Christmas Day to make this nomination...) Schulze's tracks are long and take a while to get really rolling but at his best he's doing something otherworldly and beautiful, like here. I think this is the quintessential '70s "space music" track:

I don't know if I'll personally nominate those, since they're mainly film scores. The "Titles" from "Chariots of Fire" is certainly a huge deal, but I'm a bigger fan of the 20-minute "Chariots of Fire" track that's on the album with music mostly not in the film :)

divemaster

I think film scores are ok, if something can be broken out as a song-length track. (I'm not a fan of 30-60 minute tracks for a contest like this). One of my first nominations for the next time period will be Tangerine Dream's Love on a Real Train (from Risky Business).

Hell, I should have nominated one of the tracks from Star Wars. Perhaps even just the "Main Title." No reason a classical based or symphonic piece can't be nominated, right? John Williams has written/produced a TON of genius music.

mae

Well, film scores are a bit different to me. But I guess technically any released piece of music could be nominated.

This is the album which introduced me to Klaus Schulze, by accident really. This looooong first track is simply a mind-bending trip which astonished me the first time I listened to it in headphones, it starts off pretty abstract but then when the cello kicks in.... Holy crap. I know this is not for everyone and it's not your typical 4-minute pop tune, but it's important music from one of the true titans of electronic music. Schulze is one of a holy trinity along with Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis. So, please enjoy:

Obviously a controversial song, but still:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynVN4mM2trk

Just a comment (not a seconding). I've never heard this song before (not really familiar with The Cure, either, although I might have heard of them in passing), but the song is obviously a recreation of the eponymous event in Albert Camus' The Stranger. It couldn't be more clear. I mean, if I immediately made the association to a book I read once, over 30 years ago, then it should be obvious to just about anyone listening to the song. I give the band kudos for cleverness.

I only bring this up because I imagine the "parental advisory" people went apeshit "Oh, no, this band encourages people to go out and shoot Arabs," or "glorification of racial violence" blah blah blah. Probably the same people that got Dire Straits' Money for Nothing censored for airplay. Sigh.

Sorry, just venting at people who are too stupid to understand literary allusions in song.

It is obvious, but all it takes is the title, which is why I made that preface. There's even a whole section on it in the song's Wikipedia article, and in recent years the band in live shows has been apparently singing "Kissing an Arab".
