It's time! This thread will serve to nominate and discuss the tracks for the tournament that were released between January 1, 1970 and December 31, 1974. Keep in mind that your nomination must have been initially released within this time-frame. Singles can often be released earlier or later than the album, so double check things like Wikipedia. When nominating and seconding, please follow these guidelines:

You can nominate one track per post, and you can nominate another track after two other members have made their nominations (per thread).
You can second one track per post, and you can second another track after two other tracks have been seconded (per thread).
Each nomination should be supported by a video, illustrating the song being nominated.
The video must be the version of the track being nominated (so no live versions, covers, re-recordings, or remixes).

To reiterate from the announcement post (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?19369), to make a nomination, please use the following format: ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR). A nomination should also be supported by a video, illustrating the song being nominated (though not necessarily the song's official video, especially if it contains a lengthy pre-song scene). Most tracks can be found on YouTube, and that's preferred, but other video hosting services can be used, which can be embedded with your nomination. If you can't find your pick, send me a PM and I will try to locate it for you. However, please do not simply post a link or embed the video so it appears on the page. Since there will be lots of nominations per page and lots of videos, this will be too much to handle for most computers, slowing down the page tremendously. So to make your nomination, please hide the embedded video using the SPOIL tags (using this spoiler option: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/icons/spoiler.gif) Don't forget to remove the s in https when embedding YouTube links. Also, the youtu.be sharing shortcut will not work. We need the full address (just without the s in https).

All you need to do is first click the "Insert Video" icon: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/editor/video.png. Paste your YouTube link, remove the s in https and click OK. The link should stay selected, so click the black SPOIL button, enter your ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR) into the field which appears, click OK, and you're done.

To illustrate, a sample nomination should look like this (and this track is not eligible, since it's from 2015):

Or, simply use the below template (fill in the red placeholders):

ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR)"]

How about another fun instrumental? I debated whether to nominate the '69 original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idUSncKvTS4), which is historically important, but went for the '72 cover, which I think is much better musically:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKhPtgEirOE

PS: This is possibly the only song to have a website dedicated to it.

Pablo, you have Band On The Run incorrectly listed as being released in 1973. The Album was released in December 1973, but the Single was released 8 April 1974 in the US and 28 June 1974 in the UK.

Right, meaning the song was available in 1973 on the album. What counts is when the song was first officially released - whether on an album, or a single, doesn't matter.

Isn't it awesome? Music by J.S. Bach; arrangement by Tom Parker and a hit for Apollo 100. When I was a kid my dad had this album on 8-track. Wore it OUT. I was thrilled to find that finally this album and a whole bunch of other Apollo 100 instrumental interpretations were issued on couple of CDs. Instrumental Nirvana.

Yeah.. ell I don't understand the "seconding" process...but i trust you...just let us know if songs need a "second."

I' hate to see a song go to waste because I was busy.

mae
12-18-2015, 01:28 AM
Well, the seconding process is easy. For a song to actually take part in the tournament, it needs to be nominated by one person and then seconded by another person. So by seconding something you give it your approval that it should be part of the Top 112 of this time period. If you missed something, I always keep an updated tally in the first post of everything that has been seconded (made it to the tournament) and not yet seconded. So if you see something you really feel good about in that second list, go ahead and second it.

It's a rolling short-list LOL. Like, the next 5 I want to see nominated. When those are done (either by me or someone else), then I think of 5 more. I have to wait out timing bottlenecks, so this method keeps me in the game, so to speak, until I can post again.

BTW, I don't see what the issue is with "Live" video's. Most of these songs don't have "moving" video's and the video is only to re-familiarize folks with the track. What's the big deal?

divemaster
12-18-2015, 11:56 AM
I think it's b/c a live version can be very VERY different from the version that charted. People have in mind "oh, I know that song" and then hear a live version and think WTF?

That's precisely the reason. The videos are there to either refresh your memory of the song or to listen to it for the first time. It has to be the studio version, unless a specific published live version is being nominated. The only one off the top of my head I can think of is the live cover of "Because the Night" by 10,000 Maniacs.

Respectfully, that doesn't seem right to me. How often is a "Live" version very different from the studio? Longer, yes different, no. However, what ever.

Why, yes I have over 500 CD's and just to be a stinker, a shitload of them are "Live" albums!!! LOL LOL LOL

Seriously, I always felt "live" versions were better in most cases, than the studio version. Longer and more creative. That's why my music collection has an inordinate amount of "Live" albums.

Bears second:

Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song (1970)
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen the Rain (1970)
David Bowie - Life on Mars (1971)

mae

Jean, you can only second one nomination at a time, so pick your top one.

Here are the rules in a nutshell: for threads #1-2 you can nominate and second if someone else has made one nomination or seconding, and for threads #3-14 you can nominate or second once two other people have made their nominations and seconds. This obviously doesn't apply to the very beginning of a thread.

I'll count Jean's seconding "Waiting for the Sun" and the other three as two others are seconded in between. Hope that's fair to all.

I don't think this was ever a big hit for Gordon Lightfoot, but it is easily my second favorite song of his. Haunting minor melody and poignant lyrics:

There has now been a gap of two songs since your last nomination, so you are able to legitimately nominate this yourself now, Bill....

I have to wait until one more person nominates before I can do so again, so get cracking!!!! LOL! LOL!

I promised Pablo I would nominate something from The Statler Brothers, one of my favorite groups ever. I've got their mega CD box set and had a hard time choosing what other song I could nominate.

I chose the following b/c not only does it spotlight their amazing harmonies, but the song itself is a nostalgia piece, and as a lover of oldies it really speaks to me. Whether this gets seconded or not, I at least hope you will give a listen.
