I love fantasy sports and happened to stumble upon fantasymovieleague.com. I love fantasy sports, and I love movies, so this should be right up my alley.

If there's enough interest, I could create a league and we can play and have a little fun.

Here is the link if you want to poke around:http://fantasymovieleague.com/

The league works like the following:

Every week you program your fantasy movie theater with real-life movies while staying under the salary cap However much the movies makes at the box office in real life is how much your fantasy movie theater makes. A new season starts Sept. 4 and it's free to play.

Come join us!

The league name is "The Dark Tower Movie Group" and the password is "King19."

Here is a link to the invite. I hope it works: http://fantasymovieleague.com/group/2017/join?mp=b73998d34d94f76039c8a4881a769ef8

No, I've actually never even heard of it.

Well, I went ahead and created a league for us. I'm not sure how many people we will be able to get, but this should be fun.

It was back in the very late 90s early 2000s, they haven't done it years, but it was a lot of fun.

Oh and I just joined the group. Hopefully some more people will play.

Heather19

All you need to do is pick 8 movies to fill up your screens. Each movie costs a certain amount of money and you can't go over your budget. And if you don't fill up all 8 screens then I think you might be penalized?

webstar1000
09-01-2015, 05:26 AM
but its movies that I have already been released... is cause some are still in theater?

Heather19
09-01-2015, 05:28 AM
Yeah I think it only let's you choose from a select few movies. Some are still in the theater and doing well and then some new releases for the week.

Still Servant

Is it just me or is this confusing as hell? I might be out. lol

Confusing? :scared:

You just pick movies to play in your movie theater. You get a budget of how much money you can spend, so depending on which movies you pick, you might not be able to fill all 8 theaters.

Basically, you just make believe you own your own theater and have to fill it with movies. It should really only take about 30 seconds to chose which films you want to play that week.

Shannon
09-01-2015, 08:49 PM
The fifteen choices are what I'm assuming are the projected top money makers for that week.

Fill up all the theatres or else you're penalized.

Yeah, since you missed this week it does some kind of default estimate or something. Or maybe that's just if you don't make any picks. I'm not too sure about it. Anyway, it's a long season.

It's not about favorites, it's about how much money the movie will make versus how much it costs to "buy" it.

If Straight Outta Compton costs $1000 bucks to buy and makes you $10,000,000 each screen for one screen, that's $10,000,000.

But if Walk in the Woods costs $120 and makes you $1,500,000 each screen for eight screens, that's $12,000,000.

True, I just didn't think A Walk in the Woods was going to do that well. It's aimed at an older audience that tends to stay away from theaters this time of year. Then again, for 120, that's a pretty good deal.

Shannon
09-05-2015, 02:56 PM
I didn't think it would do that well (and seeing as how we're just getting estimated numbers so far, it might not be correct) but I thought it would be worth more per dollar than the bigger movies.

I was taking a more realistic approach to filling my theater. In reality, no theater would ever have 5 theaters with A Walk in the Woods, but that's not how the game works I suppose. I've got the hang of it now though.

I just wasn't expecting A Walk in the Woods to do nearly as well as it did. I should have substituted my Sinister 2 picks for it but I thought it would have been too risky.

As for this week, I guess they're expecting The Visit to do well because it's got a pretty hefty price tag.

Did anyone else's numbers change between yesterday and today? Like, I BELIEVE I had 75 million or so at the end of Week 1, but now it seems I have 99 million. I thought it had something to do with the 2/3MM bonuses, but I'm not so sure.

I wanted to put The Visit in more than one theater, but at the hefty price tag I couldn't fill up all my theaters so I had to leave it in only one. So far the estimate for my theater isn't too bad, but I'm curious as to what the best option was.

Wow my estimates were off. For example, The Transporter went from 9 million to 2.6 million this week. How does that happen? lol Straight Outta Compton went from 60.2 million, then 26.4 million, then 13.1 million, then 10.8 million then to this week's 3.9 million? Talk about a dropoff. I know these are only estimates, but man oh man, I expected Compton to do a little bit better, thus securing me the top spot again, boooooo!

War Room: 11.4, 13.4 --- 9 million (7.7 million)
No Escape: 8.1, 7.0 --- 6.5 million (2.7 million)
The Transport Refueled: 9 --- 6 million (2.6 million)
A Walk In The Woods: 10.9 --- 7 million (5.1 million)
The Perfect Guy (new) --- 17 million (26.5 million)
The Visit (new) --- 20 million (22.5 million)
90 Minutes In Heaven (new) --- 4 million (no estimate yet)
Minions: 5.1, 3.8, 2.9, 3.9 --- 2.25 million (1.1 million)
Ant-Man: 5.5, 4.1, 3.1, 3.8 ---2 million (1.6 million)
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation: 17.2, 11.5, 8.2, 9.4 --- 7.5 million (4 million)

Straight Outta Compton: 60.2, 26.4, 13.1, 10.8 --- 10 million (3.9 million)
The Man From UNCLE: 13.4, 7.3, 4.4, 4.5 --- 3 million (1.9 million)
Sinister 2: 10.5, 4.7, 4.2 --- 2.5 million (1.3 million)
Hitman: Agent 47: 8.3, 4.2, 2.8 --- 2.5 million (640 thousand)

Yeah, they were place holders essentially. I was going to remove a few films and add The Visit, Perfect Guy and maybe some others. Until the movies are released, they don't let you fill your theaters with them. Unless I'm doing something wrong. My intention was to go back and remove some films and add the new ones. I just blanked on Friday. In the end, it was good I put some movies in there because it's better than nothing.

Some decent lineups this week, this is how I think it's gonna play out.

1) Shannon (this guy is awesome)
2) Heather (I think Uncle is gonna bring in less than Ant Man this week)
3) fantagor72 (I see what you're doing, going for the potential bonuses with Captive, but I don't think Captive is gonna do the five million it needs)
4) Kristopher.webster (little bit of everything, not bad)
5 and 6 tied) sbaldelli1 and DoctorDodge (bringing in the big money but then losing about fifteen percent of it due to the empty screens)
7) wbender2 (great idea, but you should have found the best way to fill up your screens)
8) cr1msonk1ng (lost a lot of money not including either of the big movies)
9) mikebaldelli (see above)
10) fernhern86 (abducted by aliens)

No problem! I'm just glad other people wanted to play. I was figuring nobody would be interested. I'm off to a slow start, but it's fun.

This week, my strategy was that with good word of mouth, The Visit would over perform. I would have loved to pick Maze Runner, but it was just too expensive. I was also worried about Black Mass because of Depp. I wasn't sure how people were going to react to another film from him because of his recent track record. Thankfully, Black Mass is a better movie than some of his other films recently.

Woot woot! Go Bill!

What do you guys think about the movies this week?

I'm excited to take Rose to Hotel Transylvania 2 next week. She loved the first one, and I liked it as well. Not just another dumbed down movie for kids. Mucho laughable.

And I want to see Everest in IMAX, so I'll probably see it this week. As Bill said, the trailer looks fantastic, and I love the cast. This looks like it HAS to be seen in IMAX.

Maze Runner 2, Black Mask, Visit, Perfect Guy, Green Inferno, Straight Outta Compton, No Escape I'm going to *gasp* download. Although No Escape will be seen in the theater if some random chicka has a hankering for a movie, lol.

Saw Inside Out and Mission Impossible 5 in theaters. I have zero interest in seeing War Room or Captive. Well, that's not fair, I haven't even seen the trailers. To YouTube!

War Room: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIl-XY9t_Lw

As an intelligent agnostic, this trailer was laughable. I was literally laughing at how silly it was. And also it seems like the wife is a lying bitch (taking money from his savings account and putting it into her checking account, for example), and we all know how I feel about that subject. Onto Captive. I like Kate Mara, so fingers crossed.

Captive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IKJFYegRJk

That looks pretty good! Didn't throw GAWD in your face, pulled at the heartstrings (as anything does to me nowadays involving parents and children). Adding this to the download pile.

I saw Everest. It's worth seeing in 3-D and IMAX. It's good but not great. I can only think what the film would have been with a lesser cast. I'm always happy to see Emly Watson work in anything.

I worked all the numbers with high estimates, with low estimates, and for me, it all comes down to three scenarios.

One, Maze Runner makes at least half of what it did last week.

Two, Green Inferno, despite being released on around 1,500 screens, does better than $4million each

Three, Hotel Transylvania 2 makes $45million, beating the all-time September weekend opening (which is Hotel Transylvania 1, at 42.5million three years ago)

Of those scenarios, I know which one seems the most likely, and that's what I'm putting all my faith in. Either going to be first or somewhere in the middle this week.

I'm betting on Everest this week. I was debating between that and Green Inferno. But considering how well it did last week on only imax, I'm hoping it translates well to regular screens. Did anyone pick the Intern? I heard nothing about that one prior to seeing it pop up as a selection.

Shannon
09-25-2015, 01:05 PM
Intern will make the same as other "older generation actors in romantic comedy" movies. It's ... Complicated, for example. I think Everest will do around 20million, maybe less, and I think Maze Runner will do at least half of what it made last week (so hopefully 15million this week). That's why I bet on Maze Runner, but no one else seems to have done the same thing. I don't really look into the BONUS aspect of the game, but if I suck suck suck suck this week, you can be damn sure that's what I'll be doing next week.

Have you ever been to the one at the Boston Science museum? I don't think they show any movies like this there, only the documentaries that are made specifically for IMAX, but it's the only domed one in New England I believe. It's pretty cool if you've never gone.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have been there. We went there on a school trip when I was in 8th grade. It was amazing and I remember being floored. Then IMAX movies got big and I went to a few theaters around here that bill it as IMAX, but it's really just a bigger screen. A lot of theaters are banking on their audience not knowing the difference, but IMAX is more than just the screen. It's the format it was shot in, the aspect ratio, etc.

Many claim they are IMAX, but they aren't. A good example of this is The Hateful Eight, QT is releasing the film early for true IMAX theaters. He's actually releasing it in 70MM film format.

So The Hateful Eight is shot for IMAX?

Yeah, Tarantino shot Hateful Eight on 70mm film, which is the widest and highest resolution format available. Unfortunately, most movie theaters have all gone digital, so movies are then converted to a digital format. Since QT is such a film purist, he's releasing Eight on film in select theaters that can support it. Needless to say, you have to be really lucky to have a theater near you that will be playing it.

If you're one of the lucky ones, that means you will be able to see Hateful Eight a month before most other people.

Yeah, The Martian price is stupid. It's so high you can't even put it in multiple theaters. Early buzz is strong and I heard the movie got a boost in attention after NASA announced they found water on Mars. I think 50 is on the low end of that estimate.

This is a real interesting week. I imagine The Martian will still pull in around 35-40 million so it might still be worth it. Hard to say if taking three or four other films to add up to the 500 FML Bux will earn more or less. The Visit has been great to me (it still pulled in almost 8 million for me this past weekend) so I'll probably pad my cinema with it again if I need a film or two to fill slots.

The real question is...will Pan make anything?

I like that we all have very different picks this week. Should make things interesting.

So you're betting on Everest taking the bonus Shannon? I was going back and forth between that and Sicario, but my gut kept telling me Sicario. I almost played a very risky theater and screened Sicario in all my theaters, but I'm not a big risk taker so played it safe.

I'm surprised The Walk isn't doing well. I wonder if it's the reports of people throwing up. It could also be the fact that people don't want to watch a film where the World Trade Center is featured so prominently. I hope that's not the case because I heard the film is kind of a love letter to the Twin Towers.

Got mine done. Took a MAJOR risk this time banking on the film I predict will get the bonus. Found a way to get the most money possible if all goes well. If all goes well, I may actually have a perfect cinema this week...which would be awesome (10 million bonus!) and would get me right back in this thing. I think even if my strategy flops I can get close to my average per week earnings. The bonus/perfect cinema could be the difference between 50 millions and 75 million!

Shannon
10-13-2015, 01:22 AM

Heather19

Mattrick
10-13-2015, 08:25 AM
There is a method to it. That's how I came close with The Intern last week. There is always a film or too with an advantage to pick up the bonus, eome heavily against it. The Intern made 8.6.and costs 102, which means it has to take a 20% rise to get to 1 million per buck.

Everest is a terrible pick for the bonus because it cots 30 but only made 2.2 last weekend, meaning you need a near 33% increase in box office.

Actually Everest was number 2 for the bonus at $75K this past week, but Maze Runner beat it out at $79K. And if Sicario had the estimate that I was predicting for it then it would have been a contender. That's where my estimates are always wrong. I thought with good word of mouth, second week in wide release, that it would have a little less than a 30% drop. But it didn't do nearly that well.

Mattrick
10-13-2015, 04:06 PM
Yes, last week, but it stands no chance this week. Films that do well or get punished with a higher FML cost (either in box office or for the bonus) to lower the chances of the same film getting the bonus two weeks in a row. Intern, Everest and Maze Runner all have significantly higher FML costs. Each FML buck is equivalent to a million dollars and the closer the film gets (or goes over) to 1 FML dollar per million box office ratio, the higher the chances of the bonus. Everest made 2.2 million and has a price cost of 30 FML dollars. Maze Runner made 5.3 million and costs 62 FML. For those film to be efficient enough to be in running for a bonus, there would have to have an increase in box office the next weekend, when a film that costs 25 FML made 2.8 Million, you have much higher odds of getting the bonus over a 30 FML that made 2.2 million in the following weekend.

Heather, our two lineups have been used by 74 of the Top 100 Players. Unfortunately for me, 21 have used mine (Goose Goose Goose Jem Jem Jem Jem Jem) and 53 have used yours (Spies Spies Spies Spies Spies Spies Spies Wood)

What do you think Spies is going to get? My estimates say around 9mil, which I thought was being generous. With the slew of movies coming out this week, who wants to go see Bridge of Spies?

I hope your stinky Bridge of Spies makes the price of a refunded movie ticket. :)

Heather19
10-23-2015, 10:08 AM
It's funny because I kept going back and forth between my lineup and the one you went with. I'm thinking either Bridge of Spies or Jem get the bonus this week. I think Bridge of Spies will make around 9-10 (hopefully on the higher side for my sake), so I went with that lineup because even if it doesn't get the bonus I should make a solid amount of money off of it. I'm not a risky player and Jem was just too up in the air for me. I can see it either doing really well or completely bombing. So I went with my gut because honestly I don't know who on earth would go see that film  Being a child of the 80s, and a girl, I grew up watching Jem, had the dolls, but the movie shows no resemblance to the cartoon I loved. And reading stuff online that seems to be the same concensus. So I just didn't have enough faith that it would do good. That said though, it's priced so low that based on my calculations it only needs to make 4 million and if it does then it will most likely take the bonus and you'll be raking in the dough :)

Shannon

The problem with Paranormal Activity is that its not opening in a lot of theaters, so I think that will make the numbers lower than the previous ones. All the main theaters by me aren't even carrying it.

As for Jem I loved it when I was younger, would I see a movie about it though, no  There's this retro arcade nearby and on sat mornings they play old cartoons. The first time we went in to check it out they had a big screen set up and they were playing Jem, it was awesome

I have to say that I never watched any of these until FX (I Think( began running the first four this week. I tivo'ed the 3rd and 4th entries and was very underwhelmed. Really, total garbage IMHO I really don't see how they make any money they are that bad IMO. Much less make it to a 5th installment. Then again, what do I know, right? LOL

Mattrick
10-23-2015, 09:46 PM
I watched the first Paranormal Activity and I hated it. So boring. No tension. Nothing scary. Poor acting. Non-entities as characters. I could have made a scarier movie in my own house with no ghost plot, no characters, and no budget. A good chunk of the movie was done with time lapse, so whenever the film slowed down, it was obvious something was going to happen, and then I guess I was supposed to be scared when a door shut or a sheet moved. The filmmakers may as well have popped on screen and said 'hey guys, something spooky is about to happen, so make sure you're watching so you see it and you get spooked'.

I figure it makes anything close to what it opened last year (13-18 million) It's probably the best chance at the bonus for its price. Hard to not bet on a horror film at Halloween to make some bank, and people seem to like these movies.

As to why they make them...they cost nothing to make and rake in the box office. The third one cost 5 million and made 104 domestic and 207 million worldwide, which is nearly a 500% return.

Total budget for Paranormal Activity 1-5: $18,015,000
World-wide box office for Paranormal Activity 1-5: $811,630,452
Return on investment: 450%

Pure money.

You have to look at how many theaters it's in though so it's not going to make anywhere near as much as the last few because they opened in double the amount of theaters. I think their estimate of 11mil is probably close to what it will make. It would have to make a lot more to be considered for the bonus. I guess we'll see come monday.

As for the first film, I absolutely loved it. It scared me, and I rarely get scared at horror films. Although I seem to be in the minority because everyone loves to hate on it. Is it the best horror film ever made, absolutely not, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. All the sequels I could have done without though, wasn't a fan of any of those.

It's at 3.45 for Friday estimates. Its barely behind last witch hunter and above Bridge of Spies with much less theatres. Guess we'll see how it pans out. I figured it would have to make at least 13 to have a good shot at the bonus. I was hating on it as I watched it. I even went out of my way to rent the digital, HD version for like 6 bucks on my Xbox because I was excited. I find it strange Bridge of Spies is estimated at 10.7 and PA is only estimated at 6.9 despite PA making more opening night than BoS did on Friday. Won't change the bonus, but PA should get 8.5+, so my 42 million box office should end up really being about 52 millon.

The purposely made this week extra difficult to determine the bonus because of Bridge of Spies last weekend. A lot of films at an obvious disadvantage, and with this being a historically weak weekend of box office, this is a total crapshoot.
