View Full Version : 5 Minutes or less-3 Items Max-What do you take?

Randall Flagg
06-25-2015, 10:53 AM
Yesterday we had a wildfire come within 1 mile of our house. Had it came within 1/3 of a mile, we would have been told to evacuate.

Got me thinking.

Obviously with a 5 minute warning most people would grab their family and pets.

Now you can only grab 3 of your Stephen King items.

What 3 items do you take?

BTW, Each "The Plant" counts as 1 item.

Feel free to elaborate the reasons for your choices.

Wow... if carrying is not a factor. And I am only grabbing King items...

1) Whelan orginal - ROLAND
2) Ned Dameron - PLASTER MAN
3) My IT original cover artwork

EDIT: I would grab the art... as I could NOT replace those pieces... BUT I can the books... for instance love my Lettered IT... but there are 51 other letters I can have. So the art for sure.

This is a tough choice and I'm bound to rethink it and change my mind in the next five minutes, but off the top of my head: DTIII, It, and the talisman. Waste Lands is one of my favorites, and IT is the second SK book I ever read and it left a deep mark on the easily impressionable 12 year old that I was. As for the talisman, it's just got this magic to it that I can't shake (and it was while putting my music on shuffle while reading it that made me discover my favorite band, which I now have a tattoo of).

(I was right about rethinking my answers, I originally put down The Stand and as I was writing my reasoning I changed my mind for the talisman).

EDIT: This seems to be more about collectibles, my bad!! While I have a hearty number of SK books in different editions I don't have anything considered a "collectible" I think.

That's what makes it fun.

I still don't know the answer for myself. I thought about it last night and wanted to stay and use a hose to fight the fire.
If my collection burns, I go with it. Then it won't matter (to me).

I have actually given this question some thought over the years. But the way I posed it to myself was if I could safely make it down to the basement and back one time what would I carry. There is only one entrance/exit (down the stairs) so it is taking a risk to go down there at all if a fire was raging.

Playing by Jerome's rules of only three items I would not take the asbestos Firestarter. There are at least 24 others out there so that could be replaced. I think I would take the copy of 'Salem's Lot with the first state dust jacket, one of the Whelan paintings from The Gunslinger (probably The Temple of the Oracle but maybe the Firestarter) and the handwritten manuscript for The New Lieutenant's Rap (partly because it is in very close proximity to the first two).

If I could make one trip and was limited by only how much I could carry on that one trip I would take the 'Salem's Lot and as many Whelan paintings as I could carry.

With the caveat that these are King items only, as per the original question (since, to be honest, if I could only grab three books only one would be by King), my three would be:

1). My personally-inscribed 1st HC of THE DARK HALF.
2). My Fine/Fine 1st HC of THE STAND in Collector traycase.
3). My signed/limited of 11/22/63 in aftermarket traycase.

If I had a 1st HC of NIGHT SHIFT, it would be taken in place of either 2 or 3.

So after thinking about it I would have go with: trade paperback of Cycle of the Werewolf, trade paperback of Wizard and Glass, and Pet Sematary.
The reasons I went with these are: CotW was the first SK book I bought, WG was the first DT book I bought and PS is overdue from my High School and I really should return it one of these days. The final reason is I have relocated everything else to the trunk of my car so let the house burn.
In the off chance I move the collection back into the house I’d go with:

2. Lettered The Regulators
3. 1 of 2 ‘Salem’s Lot

OH, Jerome, you are just AWFUL to bring such a question up...LOL

Given that ALL my artwork is in storage as we are "showing" our house, I do not face THAT same choice as WebStar...lol

Only book that comes immediately to mind is one that I have not even featured here (if you see me in Bridgton, ask)....a 1st Gunslinger inscribed to my daughter Sage (she will be with me in Bridgton).

After that I'm limited to 2 choices......quite possible my signed Orange Gunslinger proof and maybe one of the most simple....a 1978 original F/F Stand (unsigned), the first real King collectible which I bought from Betts and Stu Tinker in the mid-1980s...it is my first real King book and where it all started for me (I still have the Betts receipt although almost all the ink has disappeared from it).

Oh, you dirty pillows! Hmm, My DT collection is so random and only 3 are S/L. The records are at Grant for future books, so I'm discounting them except for my very first SK collectible edition, which is a rather battered (by our collection standards) 1st Ed copy of DT2 with no signatures, nothing to distinguish it at all. Then we jump quite a long way forward and I think that we take the S/L of 11/22/63. I think time is going to treat that book as something rather special and of note in his bibiliography. I THINK that I was lucky enough to get my order in before the whole order process went to pieces and left many of us out of that. My 3rd choice is going to be the Doctor Sleep S/L from Cemetery Dance. It was my introduction to them. I got my copy with really no markup I don't think from Miskatonic Books somewhat after CD sold them, so I'm very happy that I got in on this and appreciate Larry for keeping it reasonable! I opened it up and got a look at that brilliant white clamshell! Wow! Is that a beautiful book!

I REALLY hate leaving others behind; 25 years of assembling -through Grant- DT2 through DT8(4.5); my new Haven Fund Carrie Remarque; the PS & CD editions. the UK 1/200 TWTTK, and my first Remarque in a Scribner Doctor Sleep. Now on the other hand, I do have my UTD S/L and an overpriced Revival which kind of grate on me when I look at them (though Revival is better now that it is in a slipcase!). ;) I can't imagine getting rid of any of them at this point though.

Just wanted to revive this thread.

As of today their are numerous wildfires in Northern California. None threatening my residence, but there has been tremendous loss of life and property here in California.

5 minute warning: I grab my family and pets. The 3 SK books/art I grab are (not in order of importance):

Regulators Lettered
Misery Lettered
Original Whelan sketch (one of several, but the actual first I received when buying Knowing Darkness deluxe).

On a more modest note, the three items I would take would be:

1) Misery S/L (Suntup)
2) IT S/L (CD)
3) Black House S/L (Grant)

This is tough. I think a fire would put things into perspective.

1. Misery S/L.. yeah the value is there but honestly. How doesn't feel that this isn't one of the most beautiful books they have ever held/saw.
2. IT signed 1st... sure my S/L is worth more but this book was a personal quest of mine for a few years and I couldn't stop smiling once I had my hands on it
3. Whelan Toward Card original... similiar to IT it was a long time searching for this and it was exactly what I wanted when I found it.

Geek Love, signed limited edition, with an original piece of artwork inserted. Only 26 in existence. No numbered edition.

It, signed limited edition, remarqued by all three artists, yes, included the deceased Glen Orbik. I also have a triple remarqued matching portfolio, but I'd have to sacrifice that one. Ugh!

TWTTK, signed limited edition, with a specially two page remarque by Jae Lee. Had to wait in his hotel lobby bar for him to finish, then had a great conversation with him.

I can't believe all of the remarqued books that I would have to lose out on. Lucky for me my Misery is being remarqued, so I would still get that one in month!

THE GUNSLINGER 1st that Ralph had King sign for me at the George Mason event a number of years back when I couldn’t make the trip.

LISEY’S STORY signed 1st purchased at the King event in SF years ago during his book tour. That was my first time seeing King live. I didn’t meet him personally then, but it was the event where Jerome and I met up for the very first time.

TWTTKH 1st that King signed for me coming out of the men’s room at the Rock Bottom Remainders concert in L.A. a few years ago. Jerome witnessed and other TDT members were in general attendance.

While these three books are not even close to the monetary value of other King items in my collection, still they are the last things I would want to lose as they represent treasured times with friends.

RF gave me liberty for 8 items: especially since we were evacuated from Vacaville this morning. Initially didn’t take any books - went back to check on house (it’s still standing as of 1400 PST):

Here’s the books in hand:
Misery numbered
Misery lettered
Last Call
Gunslinger S/L
Gunslinger 1st inscribed
It 1st inscribed to Caleb
Stand bible/coffin
Green Mile

Actually grabbed the first 5 n drive off - then I asked Steph to head back and grabbed the last three

Appreciate all of the well wishes - back in the house - brought books back. But realized need a better procedure for quick evacuation. The yeti for books not the best option but worked in a pinch. Will instead get storage bin (ideally with wheels) with bubble wrap stored inside - so I can safely line up the books and it is ready to go. Also I would advise that you place all of your "GO books" on the same or nearby shelf - so it is easier to get to in emergency and you are not running around. These books will be on two shelves next to each other once I reorganize. And remember - books are very heavy so stack your books and see what you can realistically lift/carry/wheel to the car. Lessons learned.

Randall Flagg
08-22-2020, 03:55 PM
Luggage with spare bubble wrap works. A large roller will hold 50 lbs. of books. Best to have plenty of the large bubble wrap. Clothes can be tossed in double bagged large 55 gallon bags. Don't fret about wrinkles in clothes. Birth certificates, social security cards, passports, homeowner deeds, vehicle titles, and registration copies, etc. should be stored in a safe deposit box in a bank that is NOT in a rural area.

One should scan, in high resolution, full color images of their Passport, Drivers License, Social Security Card, Medical Cards, front and back of all credit cards, and email the images to yourself.

Agreed, although emails may or may not be the safest option, in case of being compromised and risking identity theft. But there should be backups. And it may not be easiest way, but I would recommend be careful in the naming of files. Having something that clearly sayd "id card" would be easier to find and therefore more likely to get stolen if things got compromised

Dropbox just released a "vault" option, to store those kind of documents

I wanted to thank everyone for the well wishes, thoughts and prayers. I am back at home but with mixed emotions. My home was spared from damage and I am waiting for the event to be over so I can begin the clean-up of debris, which is still accumulating.

I told Jerome, Chad and Patrick in a text that I won’t play the “what would you take game” as I have done it already in 2017, packed by didn’t leave in 2019, and now have done it again in 2020. Now that I am home, and hopefully for some therapy, I will post what I did take, but I’m playing by my rules and not following the 3 items or less.

What’s in the box? Matching set of Suntup numbered and a red numbered EotD (same number as the Suntup and the reason I ended up on the Suntup train), and the LP Revival.

What’s in the basket? 1st/1st Doubleday books, Lettered The Regulators and The Stand, Centipede Press: The Shining and Angel’s Inferno/Falling Angel, and 2 signed copies of Joe Hill’s The Fireman

Not pictured were Custom Bound ‘Salem’s Lot, Centipede Press The Haunting of Hill House and 1 of 1 Don Brautigam portfolio.

As of today the fire is just over 60K acres with 36 homes lost. The galley below starts with the park entrance that is 4 blocks from our home. The houses in the galley are 10 blocks from our home and are only a few of the approximately 15 that were lost in my neighborhood.
