Stephen King Book Signing
FINDERS KEEPERS
Bridgton Books
207-647-2122
Sunday, July 12th, 2015 10:00 am
Bridgton Books is sponsoring a book signing with esteemed, local author Stephen King, who has graciously offered to sign 500 copies of his new book entitled FINDERS KEEPERS. Due to the large expected volume of people attending, The Magic Lantern has generously agreed to host the event. Tickets are available now at Bridgton Books. The ticket includes a first printing-first edition copy of "Finders Keepers", and tickets are the price of the book (30.00 plus tax) plus a two dollar processing fee.
There will be free refreshments at the Magic Lantern for the attendees. Because of the large amount of people going, Stephen will not be able to personalize the books he signs, and also won't be able to sign any other books, except the book included with the ticket. Please no backpacks or flash photography.
We have put an announcement in the Bridgton News for tomorrow, but are holding off posting this on Stephen King's website in the hopes that more people from this area will be able to visit with the author, who has many ties to this community. Once it gets posted on the author's official website, it will sell out within 24 hours, so get your tickets now.
Tickets ONLY available through calling or stopping by Bridgton Books. Please do not try to order tickets through facebook or call the Magic Lantern. Thank you.

I have a wait list for signed copies already of 10 people....Any of you with an extra book come to me please. My best guess is that after the signing these will be seen at $350-$400 for sale. King NEVER did a formal signing for Mr. Mercedes and I estimate maybe 25 legit signed copies exist...those go for $500-$600 each!

JUST A Reminder, Event Organizers search this site, they don't like lots of questions! Should we start a private thread to talk about the upcoming event and share information?

Less questions, means more success. 14 SK events for me over 70 books signed in person. and it is getting harder and harder to manage with large crowds.

my best event still is BOSTON LOWELL. i was one of two members to attend and got 9 books signed. and he didnt even blink an eye!

yes, but RF's comment about doing the stephen king tour... isn't that in Bangor?

and it'd be nice if I was staying in the same town as some of the rest of the people going (and staying) so we could hang out...

Jerome, when-day and time - are ya'll planning on doing the tour?

flying in on Sat is over 100.00 cheaper than flying in on Friday

I just ordered two tickets. Now I have to wait for my wife to get home and tell her we are going to Maine next month.

I would be interested in the SK Tour (although I think I have seen about all there is to see). When are most going to Bangor to do the tour?

Rahfa

The problem with Portland is the likely lack of direct flights.

If you fly into Boston, you're an extra two hours south - but the tradeoff of driving from Boston is probably going to balance out with the time it would take to make a flight connection, etc. So Boston would work I think.

If you get a decent flight though, then Portland is a good bet. Or look into Manchester, NH -it's a bigger airport than Portland and it's closer than Boston.

{Edit - I see you already looked at flights...so they must have worked out. Good!}

Quite a few different plans out there, but I plan on flying in to Bangor leaving SFO Friday night on a red-eye.
My eta to Bangor is Saturday before noon.
I plan on the Bangor tour Saturday afternoon, then to stay in Bangor Saturday night and drive early Sunday to Brighton.
Post event, I'll likely meet with those who wish to for lunch, then drive to Portland for the night.
I'm sure others are doing it differently-many staying in Portland or Brighton Saturday night.

Portland is one hour. Bangor is 2.25 hours. Lots of SK sights in Bangor. NOTHING IN PORTLAND. Bangor is where i want to be! Just getting your picture in front of his old house was worth a 5 hour drive for me!

I'm staying in Portland also.
My goal was to do one night (or two) in each city.
I'm flying in to Bangor. For myself, it seems like a lot of work to spend 12 hours to get from home to Bangor, only to drive 2.5+ hours to Portland (20+ miles from event in Brigton).
I'll stay in Bangor Saturday, do the tour, have an enjoyable dinner, then retire early to drive straight to Brighton early Sunday morning. I'm hoping traffic at 6am on a Sunday morning will be light.

The event will likely be over in <90 minutes. All 500 attendees get a signed book and ~8 seconds each in front of Mr. King.
Post event, lunch in either Brighton or Portland seems likely.
Members are coming from all over, but I'm not certain everyone wants to get together as a large party for lunch after the event.
Some may prefer smaller parties-and at different venues.

I am thinking about flying into and out of Boston (7/11-7/14) and renting a car to drive to Portland. On Monday we were thinking about driving to Bangor and hooking up with Stu for one of the tours, probably staying the night in Bangor. Then driving back to Boston on Tuesday to fly home.

Haven't booked anything yet. Waiting to hear from a couple of folks, including Stu.

I only decided to go to this thing a couple of hours ago but am getting pretty excited. My wife is excited too.

The Magic Lantern is a theatre nearby. They know how to do signings. they did them before. We sit in a theatre, they call our row, we get our book signed. it will take him 10 seconds to sign your book! it happens so fast! But still amazing!

That's cool that Portland/Bangor flights worked out for so many - I would have expected more difficulty with connecting flights, etc.

Yeah, I wish at one of these signings they would let people bring a book - or at least personalize.

But of course we know the answer - 500 signatures turns into 1000 - and they don't want to deal with grabbing YOUR book when they have the system to a science of the stack of all the same books.

I will drive up early Sunday. Once I see the logistics, etc. I wasn't going to go, but now it will neat to hopefully meet a lot of members.

Portland to Bangor is a neat drive - but Route 1 is often two lanes, and if you're driving it can be difficult to appreciate the scenery.

As for hotels, yeah, Portland used to be an industrial port town but now it's a lot more fru-fru with a lot of quirky restaurants and bars. Like Portsmouth down south, it's a lot more expensive than it used to be.

You must have done something wrong (either from their perspective, or in reality) . There are tons of Smith's in the world, and they (so far) didn't cancel mine.
I used one credit card, two names, one zipcode and one phone number.

They are booked Saturday afternoon. They are closed Monday. Not a lot of choices left.

Just to clarify, I ordered two tickets. One for myself and one for my wife. One transaction, one unique CC #, and my zipcode.

From the bookstore owners perspective, you or another person with the same last name violated their purchase policy.
I hope your parents didn't book non-refundable flights and hotels to attend the event.

The Magic Lantern is a theatre nearby. They know how to do signings. they did them before. We sit in a theatre, they call our row, we get our book signed. it will take him 10 seconds to sign your book! it happens so fast! But still amazing!

Less questions, means more success. 14 SK events for me over 70 books signed in person. and it is getting harder and harder to manage with large crowds.

Hopefully managing large crowds won't get in your way.
Perhaps everyone (who wants an additional book, or another King item signed) should just stay at home and then you can get a few dozen more King books/items signed.
Hell, no need to photo-bomb. You just take selfies around SK all day and night...

I have resisted emoticons, you are sharp enough to get the humor.

I was very disappointed at the New York Event! I did not make it in a single photo!!

But I did get several thank you's and a personalized book from the store Manager and his two employees stating that I helped manage the line, they said chaos ensued when I stepped away!

Speaking of selfies, in Bradenton, the photographer took a picture of me, taking a selfie with SK! He thought it was very cool and sent me a 5 x 7 with a nice note!

My ability to be kind and helpful to everyone seems to pay off at these events!

It worked at Boston Lowell, Toronto and Sarasota! Not so much in Hartford, Portland, KC and Witchata. I was just telling WEBSTAR that this will be my 14th event and I am still excited to get to meet my favorite author (again)!

Anybody that has a chance for a private reception with SK, it is well worth the price of admission.

That is really annoying - and when you know you're not really trying to game the system, maddening.

But, from their perspective - they don't know you, and they probably think you ARE trying to get over. So it's not fair, that's for sure, but they're thinking that they are doing the right thing for everyone else.

I think it's silly, personally - you're two distinct couples, so I'm not sure what the problem could possibly be. But welcome to small-town Maine.

I would like to meet all of the guys for a brew or two Saturday night and will lean towards the groups plans but thought that makes sense... plus King may be around that area too:) Bridgton's hotels too are by and large much less money than Portland... so there is a few reasons:)

so I will be staying Sunday and Monday nights in Portland... I found this Bed and Breakfast located central Portland - and it was a lot cheaper than most of the hotel/motels that I saw listed in the same area.

Built in the 1890's , it comes with a full serve home cooked breakfast (cooked to order)... and several kitties... and hopefully a ghost or two.

they had some rooms left as of yesterday, in case any or you are interested... 2 with shared baths and one with own bath (mine comes with it's own bath)

From SK board (by Ms. MOD)

"He might say a few words before the signing begins but this is just a straight signing. They moved it to the movie theater as the book store wasn't large enough to accommodate that many people and this way they wouldn't have lines out on the street. The book signing is to help the book store. It's a small independent and the sales of the books for the signing will be a big deal for them. This was something Steve set up to help his hometown store much more than for any increase to his sales numbers."

Portland for sure mate. The town is right next door... 2 hour drive if you were in Bangor.

Since there has been a request for list, I grouped comments from this thread to give some indication of who all may be in attendance at Stephen King-Finders Keepers Signing - 7/12/2015-Maine

webstar1000 GOT MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!

KingKornKarn I'm going as well, along with wife. We'll be over in the Adirondacks for vacation during that time and so I thought why not make the beautiful drive over?
Kingfan24 Making a 15 hour drive to see my favorite author. I'm nuts...
Sir_Boomme so... I bought a ticket (BTW... she says she has about 100 left)
carlosdetweiller I just ordered two tickets. Now I have to wait for my wife to get home and tell her we are going to Maine next month.

Not happy... Unless things radically change in the next couple weeks, I won't be able to make it to the signing. At worst, I'm only out $65 for two tickets, so at least it's not a significant financial loss. Still, I'd love to be there. My wife doesn't have a lot of vacation time to spare, and we'd like to spend more time in Maine to get our money's worth, rather than just being there for 2-3 days.

Well, except for Boston, my wife has never been to the Northeast. So, she would probably kill me if I went to Maine without her. That puts me in quite the Catch-22.

I'm in too - I'm not even 100 percent sure I can make it, but after giving it some thought, investing the $30 for a ticket seemed like the smart play...I'm about 90 minutes away, so I can make it happen, and if I can't, no big loss...

Nathan, if you can't make it I will buy your ticket.

Never mind, I now see that you are going.

If anyone has an extra ticket, I would love to go.

I am not on here often enough to catch these things or I would have a ticket already!

Hey Karen, I don't think that'll work... I was told they are requiring a photo-ID that matched up to the ticket reservation to get the tickets - so if you bought it, you'd still have to be able to pic it up, which might not be possible.

HEADS UP if you are hoping to take the SK tour in Bangor. You should prebook with Stu. I am booked for July 14 @ 2:00.

I bought tickets for my wife and myself. My sister had to buy her own tickets.

TrueNorth aka Foster Walt

We are driving 10.5 hours from outside Toronto and staying in Bridgton July 11 + 12. Next morning on to spending two nights in Bangor, Stu picks up at our hotel.

I turned 65 this week and was reminded of 25 years ago in Caracas where I got hooked on King and got 3rd degree burns. It was this PB of The Stand that dug into me and wouldn't let go.

Looking forward to meeting you all. If you see this guy drop over and say hi.....

Not sure why people keep calling them. The rules seemed to be very clear from the beginning. It just makes them more cautious, and if down the road they do another signing, they will be even more restrictive.
Out of town people willing to travel great distances will then be shut out.
Eat the "ticket" and offer to pay shipping for an unsigned book.

I'm sure they sell any extra signed ones, but if a person couldn't make it and was willing to pay shipping, I'd hope they would send an unsigned one.

They won't send a signed one :frown2: I knew it would be a long shot... I tried to get them to make an exception since I can no longer make it, but they wouldn't budge.

I actually called to get a refund, but thought it was worth a shot. They were completely fine with the refund, since they already have a long waiting list. They were very friendly to deal with.

I will throw this out there for all of you traveling to Bridgton (as I am)...I am interested in purchasing any signed Finders Keepers books you might have. I have a wait list of at least 20 customers at Betts looking for copies. I will pay what I think is a fair price as I'm looking to "turn" these copies to my customers for only a very small profit.

I've seen a couple copies traded amongst members here for like $600 but I think that is pretty optimistic....I mean we are talking a signed 1st edition TRADE copy here....granted there are only to be 500ish legit signed copies, but Mr. Mercedes (NO FORMAL signings and very likely less than 40 legit signed copies exist) sell for LESS than $600.

Email me please at Betts if you are interested in selling a copy....I can make it worth your while (I think).

I agree, and not to sound all 'high and mighty', but if I were going to the event and got extra copies of the book signed, I wouldn't dream of trying to get $600+ from a member here. I think the original estimate posted by David at $350 - $400 is a fair price. And I'm not just saying that because I'm not going to the event, and don't want to pay $600 for the book!

I finished reading Finders Keepers this evening and really loved it. Morris is a kick-ass villain, Pete a very likeable and sympathetic hero, and the set up for book 3 is awesome. I wish they would publish part 3 this fall and move the short story collection until next spring. Now I am really pumped to attend the signing in Bridgton! Am driving all day Saturday, sleeping over at The Pleasant Mountain Inn - which sounds like it is trying to hard not to be threatening - and then go back on Sunday. Look forward to meeting other fans again.

FYI, I was told that to pick up tickets the morning of the event, you simply queue up at the theater entrance. When they open the doors, you produce I.D. for each person who purchased a ticket (or produce the ticket(s) that were picked up the day prior to the event), then are allowed to enter.
The gentleman wouldn't specify when the theater would open, but he said they have done this type of event before and that entering goes rather smoothly. He doesn't anticipate the actual signing to take more than 65-80 minutes.

Supply and Demand = Price.
Last week I bid Mr Mercedes up to $575 and lost it grrrr......man I figured $525 was plenty. Shoulda, coulda, woulda bid more. I think it will always be a $600 book and am on the hunt. Finders Keepers I think $450 is fair. We know there will be 500. This waters down the price. Only 7 more sleeps.

There will NOT be 500 signed FK's for sale. King could sign 1,000, but if only 100-200 hit the market, then the price will be established by that amount.

If Glenn enjoys hearing about his work, tell him I enjoy the HF Carrie Remarque a LOT, and look forward to what will be in the Carrie Portfolio (both printed AND remarque) once that is completed, and eventually the Salem's Lot Edition (I'm guess that he'll be enjoying doing the those, he seems to draw inspiration/enjoyment from the early novels in the pieces I've seen). My first artwork was the Doctor Sleep remarque from my avatar, and at this moment I don't have artwork by any other artist. If he DOESN'T like hearing kudos from his customers, then just enjoy your time enjoying the brew and the ocean!

Too ALL of you attending, I hope that you all have an amazing time, that you take extra books JUST IN CASE, have a splendid time and enjoy each others company! I wish I could be there and meet you all, but I do thank the unnamed (at this point, I don't know if they want the name drop) member that sold me their spare copy at the presumed low market on these. That was highly appreciated, and it will have a treasured place in my cabinet. Now the OCD in me NEEDS to backfill in Mr. Mercedes, but that will have to wait for another day.

I agree. I probably won't bother... they seem to be VERY strict here... You know, if it's all about helping a bookstore.. I WOULD GLADLY pay the book store $100 per person and be able to get one of my own books signed. I bet I am not alone either. Not sure why they don't ever give that a go....

I'll probably bring one but don't expect to get it signed. Nothing ventured nothing gained. The book store folks at most of these events are scared silly and enforce King's rules to the letter. I don't understand why he cares which book folks want to get signed so long as they buy their ticket. He seems to have some beef with eBay resellers but forcing people to get two copies of the same book signed likely only creates a market of extra copies of FK that folks are willing to sell when their spouse gets a second copy signed.

Yeah, AT the event will never happen.

What I did mean was what RF said, which is having the book and maybe having a pre-post encoutner...but I'm not really the type to wait around, nor do I want to shlep around a 1st/1st Night Shift. But we'll see...

But I agree I don't get why he doesn't personalize or sign any book - I mean, I do know - it's the time it would take. But still, if he's anti-ebay then personalization would give people a connection to the book that makes them unlikely to sell...

I doubt he would sign anything before or after the event unless he is a little more relaxed being close to home. They usually whisk him in like the Pope. And he has no trouble saying no. Not a warm and fuzzy type. I can understand the no personalization rule but not why he cares which 500 books he signs since it takes no longer to sign his name to whatever book is put in front of him. The book store doesn't care because they have our money. Ms Mod said that is a rule the bookstores insist on to avoid confusion and abuse but I don't buy that. One ticket, one book seems simple enough.

Yeah, but it's a hassle and it slows the line down.

You know how these work - it's like an assembly line. Pretty soon a bunch of clowns from a fringe fan website show up, and one guy starts whining cause his Night Shift DJ is in mylar and they're bending the corner, and another guy brings "Knowing Darkness" and needs somebody to help put it on the table...

And next thing you know it's been six hours.

Now - could they send you to the back of the line, and would SK be willing to sign 50 more books if it was going to help the bookstore? Probably - but those are questions people don't ask, or don't even get the chance to ask...because SK's reps are just going to say "this is how it's going to be..."

And, for the record, I'm talking about ANOTHER fringe fan website...haha.

The bookstore will just say those are King's rule. King's folks say it is the bookstore. Like the army some things are just done without anyone understanding why. My best guess is they want to discourage folks from bringing multiple items and the easiest way to explain that is to limit to the new book. One ticket, one book would do exactly the same thing but would require more than a few seconds to explain.

From THE BRIGDTON NEWSPAPER
Stephen King ‘Finders Keepers’ — Locals have first dibs on Stephen King book signing
June 14th, 2015

A BLOODY GOOD READ — This blood-soaked open book illustration for Stephen King’s Finders Keepers evokes a plot that revisits the horror a homicidally-obsessed fan of a best-selling author can cause, a la King’s Misery.
Finders Keepers — Locals have first dibs on Stephen King book signing
By Gail Geraghty
Staff Writer
Author Stephen King will once again demonstrate generosity at its best by offering greater Bridgton readers signed copies of his new novel, Finders Keepers, which explores obsession at its worst.
King, a summer resident of Lovell, has arranged with Bridgton Books to hold the book signing at the Magic Lantern Theatre on Sunday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. Advance tickets are available now at the Main Street bookstore, which is one of King’s favorite haunts when he’s in town.

Bridgton Books co-owner Justin Ward said King is waiting to announce the event on his website in the hope that more local people will get a chance to attend the book signing before the 500 spots sell out. The first time a similar event was held at the Magic Lantern for his 2009 science fiction novel Under the Dome, based on the town of Bridgton, the tickets sold out in a day and a half, said Ward.
“Mr. King has strong ties to our area,” Ward said. “He came into the store recently and just offered to do it.” King has held several book signings since Finders Keepers hit bookstores June 2, but the July 12 event will be his only book signing in Maine, said Ward.
As a sequel to the Edgar Award-winning Mr. Mercedes, voted best mystery novel of 2014, Finders Keepers features the return of three ex-policemen returning to do battle against an overzealous reader. Reviews have been calling the book an intensely suspenseful, heart-pounding read that is also King writing about how literature shapes a life for both good and bad, and forever. It ends with a cliffhanger, leaving readers “obsessed” with reading the third and final book in the planned trilogy.
Those wishing to attend the signing for Finders Keepers will buy a ticket at the bookstore representing the price of the novel, and then wait in line to receive their signed copy from King, who will be sitting on the stage inside one of the theaters, pen in hand. Because of the large amount of people who will attend the two-hour signing, King will not be able to sign any of his other older books, nor will he be able to personalize the ones he signs, Ward said. No backpacks will be allowed.
Having done so many book signings over the years, King has the logistics down to a science. Because of his fondness for western Maine and familiarity with many of its residents, King can be expected to take a little extra time to chat, as he did at the last Magic Lantern book signing in 2010.
“This is his hometown bookstore, and these are his people,” Ward said. He asked that any questions about the event be directed to the bookstore and not to the Magic Lantern, which is not directly involved in the organizing but will be serving some refreshments.

this makes it sound like it was King's decision however reads like it was information provided by the bookstore
