Since we have an 'Other Authors' subforum I thought a separate thread for buying, selling and appraising non-King books might be appropriate. If not, the mods know what to do

My question for today: what would be a good price for a 1st/1st Song of Kali (Dan Simmons) in collectible (but not necessarily perfect) condition? There is one on eBay for $125 (BIN).

I think this is a great idea.

Ref. SONG OF KALI, assume that you mean the Bluejay edition? There are a couple on ABE, signed (bookplate, NF) and unsigned (Fine), in the $125 price range. I don't have experience with either seller, but their ratings are good.

Thanks, Matt! I'm not in the market for a copy yet but I'll keep $125 in mind.

A signed Bluejay 1st HC of SONG OF KALI used to be around $250, an unsigned around $175...now a signed Bluejay is around $200, and an unsigned around $125. The Headline reprint HC can be had for pennies on the dollar. The signed/limited/slipcased Earthling edition, which upon publication diminished the value of the Bluejay 1st, runs around $250.

The Earthling edition may be dropping a little bit, or it might have just been a really lucky end of April for another eBay shopper and myself.

On April 21, someone snagged a copy for $129.99 with free shipping in an auction- they were the only bidder.
A few days later I managed to get a copy for $120, also with free shipping, through a best offer; the original asking price was $130.

I had been looking for a copy for a couple years. That was the first time I every remember seeing any offered or sold anywhere close the $120-130 price point. I think $175 was the previous low I'd seen, and that was an auction a couple years ago; I also believe that one had pretty high shipping.

Interesting. Yeah, I readily admit I haven't kept up on the current values for the various editions of this book...those prices I mention above were valid perhaps a year or two ago, but given the softness of the collectible-book market and the ebbs and flows of various authors' popularity, it doesn't surprise me that there has been a decline. FWIW, I have the Earthling S/L, and it's a great production of a wonderful book.

Isn't the Collectible Classifieds thread open to all books, not just King? I ask because I truly don't know...I know I've seen some, but not clear on if that's condoned or frowned upon.

It is, AFAIK, but it seemed logical (to me) for this subforum to have its own dedicated thread. I think there's also a Comics Classifieds thread outside Calvin's Corner?

I did consciously decide to keep it limited to one thread, as opposed to King items, which rightfully have several threads for selling, appraising etc.

Keeping with the Simmons theme:

This one is not as hard to find as it was in the pre-internet days (and before LOVEDEATH) was published, but still a neat thing. This is #82 from the 300-copy edition, and is Fine with just a bit of light handling.

$50 including shipping to any US address.
International $45 plus shipping at cost

It's open to all books, but HIGHLY encouraged to be King books. Ideally 90% of the ads in the CC thread will be King items.

I don't think there is any future in the Trice limited editions. If by "any future" you mean significant appreciation in value to collectors. Britton Trice stopped publishing them because he couldn't sell them (towards the end, anyway).

A while ago I stumbled across three perfect, unread paperback copies from Frank Herbert's Dune saga. They were published by New English Library in the late 80s I believe. They have very distinctive cover art and I would like to find nice copies of the remaning three books. I have God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune so I'm missing the first three (Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune). Below is the cover of God Emperor of Dune (not my copy, mine is far better):

I don't see the book as collectible. I think it's closer to poor than fair based on the pictures. The dustjacket probably holds some value though.

You might get $10 for it.

Will do. There's a Dune Messiah on Abe (http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=7761148167&searchurl=pn%3Dnel%26bi%3D0%26ds%3D30%26bx%3Doff%2 6pics%3Don%26sortby%3D17%26tn%3Ddune+messiah%26an% 3Dfrank+herbert%26recentlyadded%3Dall), but it's bundled with some other signed books and I'd imagine you don't want to spend that much. Those two copies I got back in the day when they were the currently sold version of the paperbacks.

Anyone have a copy of Dan Simmons' Banished Dreams for sale? I'm specifically looking for a 1/300 copy, not the reprint. There are several copies currently listed on ABE, but I always prefer dealing with my fellow forum members.

I'm also looking for the following Simmons titles:

Hyperion
The Fall of Hyperion
Summer Sketches
The Rise of Endymion
The Crook Factory
Darwin's Blade
Hardcase
Worlds Enough and Time
Hard As Nails
Olympos
Drood
Black Hills
Flashback
The Fifth Heart

I know they're all pretty easy to find but if you happen to have a couple of them for sale I'm interested - it will save a LOT on shipping costs if I can get several books at once.

Also (I'm in the mood today), if you have any 'classic'/must-read horror/thriller/scifi/fantasy books for sale (e.g. Matheson, Bradbury, McCammon, Herbert, any of the Great Ones), drop me a line. I'm only interested in trade 1st editions, not limiteds.

Hard to say because they are all overpriced IMO but there is one for sale for $549.99 which I think is quite fair.

Hey all, My sister is a big fan of the sword of truth series and I thought I would try to find her a copy of Wizard's First Rule for Christmas. I'm looking for a signed First or if there is a special edition out there somewhere? I have no idea the market price for these things as I am not too familiar with Goodkind, although I know this series has a large following.

What should I bee looking for here and do any of you have it? :)

Like Shannon said David has a Goodkind section near the bottom of his inventory page. No signed WFR remaining but he does have others signed by Terry.

VJs has a Goodkind (http://www.vjbooks.com/Terry-Goodkind-s/98.htm) section too. No WFR either.

Hey Folks,
have a bigger acquisition agreed on today - and this means i heave to clean up a little !

I am going to sell a set of GRRM ASOIAF, GoT and ACOK - both absolutely F/F versions of the S/L , and both #PC

I am not able to collect two sets, and so i am releasing this one.
They are untouched, and still in SubPress Packing, as far as I know the GoT is the only #PC out there.

Dan Simmons

HYPERION and THE FALL OF HYPERION
Both HC/DJ 1st/1st, both signed by Dan. Unread copies, showing a bit of light shelfwear from the years, but in great shape otherwise.

More to come. We have a number of anthologies as well, including ROGUES, FAERIE TALES, WEIRDER SHADOWS OVER INNSMOUTH, etc., signed by multiple contributors.

Because my wife is so great about letting me start my King collection, i want to be able to pick up some things that she likes as well. Already got her the EarthChildren series (5 out of 6 1sts) that she wanted and now i would like to get her Kim Harrison's Hollows series.

I will probably need all 13 at some point but would like to start with the early numbers. These do not need to be signed. I have made a deal with a shop in michigan to have Ms Harrison sign copies that i ship there. This will insure that they are 1/1.

Problem is, the few copies i have are not good enough for my honey! They are ones i picked up at Goodwill etc.
Does anyone here read this series and have any spare copies?

Thanks!!

It only has Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, and Dance With Dragons. Same number.

Is it for the 3 books only... does it include rights?

It was just the books. I guess ehat is a fair price for each book. Don't care about number or anything just each book individually.

Well, Dance with Dragons is worth more if there are rights for the next books published.

I would say between $800-1000 for each? Maybe a bit more if matching with rights.

I think the case here is the copy of Dance. Unless the person selling has unlimited rights to that number for all books from SP, the buyer should be able to buy the next books at retail.

AGOT & ACOK might be harder to sell alone.

I agree - the rights is the main selling point - if you got that then it would push up the value of sp agot and acok - maybe in the 750/800 range. Otherwise individually those two would prob be only 150/200 above retail - so in the 500/600 range - in peak season. Unless someone's hoping sp makes 500 of the next book as well and grab one of those. I'm not exactly sure how the rights thing is determined on those extra printed books (fortunately I haven't had to pay attention to that).

So I have never read any David Mitchell books, although I do know of the popularity of Cloud Atlas. There is a 1500 copy signed/limited edition of his new book Slade House coming out around Halloween. I'm not sure if this is his first S/L, but it is already sold out at some places online. PS Publishing has 50 copies for 50 GBP. I took a chance and ordered one. Maybe I should start reading him now :-)

Yeah, I saw the combo deal. I wasn't sure if I wanted to start a Mitchell collection without at least reading one book. I thought the S/L was a good price so that will do it for me for now. Running out of room in my office for books. Have to be selective.

If you're just looking for a nice, signed copy of the first edition, the trade paperback state is nice and will save you hundreds over the fancier editions. If you're set on one of those, the 200-copy would be my preferred, but you may benefit to wait and see if more copies hit the market after the new edition comes out.

Price has jumped - I got one of the 200 copies for around $200 a little over a year ago - and sold my copy - similar to F-con ones (didn't say f-con) but was signed by both - exactly same as the 200 limited one - but no slipcase - for around $200 to a member here within the past year (I think that was the price - it might have been a little higher - but not much). Just keep looking

wolfehr

The 200 copy edition is slipcased. Is yours from PS Publishing? I didn't know they made a traycase. The limitation page says... "This edition is limited to 200 numbered slipcased hardcover copies signed by Joe Hill and Christopher Golden, 500 numbered trade hardcover copies signed by Joe Hill, and 1,000 unsigned trade paperbacks." My understanding is the Fantasycon version is the same as the 500 numbered trade hardcover copies, but with a special limitation number.

Here are the two listings I was looking at...

I thought the fantasy con edition are actually closer to the 200 edition - they have same limitation page as slip cased book - signed by both hill and golden, but the DJ is the same as the 500 copy book and no slip case - at leasts that's what my copy looked like - it was not labeled fantasy con though. There's a blurb somewhere that goes through these books and when they were first signed and put together - not sure if someone from PS could fill in the details.

I assumed the Fantasycon edition is the 500 copy version because the listing I was looking at did not come with a slipcase and the limitation page only had Joe Hill's signature. I fully acknowledge it's an assumption on my part though. Would love to hear the full story about this book if someone from PS could help!

I AM THE ABYSS by Chris Morey (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/chrismorey/i-am-the-abyss)

I AM THE ABYSS is a new fiction anthology of horror and dark fantasy containing ten unique visions of the underworld by ten of the most talented and critically-acclaimed authors in horror, dark fantasy and weird fiction. Edited by Chris Morey (Black Labyrinth imprint), the book will be published by award-winning specialty publisher Dark Regions Press.

Based on the concept that after we die our consciousness inverts into our own realms of subconscious thought, I AM THE ABYSS contains ten human minds whose journeys in the Birth World have come to an end. Each individual was a dark mind or tortured soul, each story a perilous yet enlightening adventure through a personal afterlife.

The book will contain ten original and newly written novellas of horror and dark fantasy from authors Laird Barron, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Steve Rasnic Tem, Michael Marshall Smith, Kealan Patrick Burke, Reggie Oliver, Jeffrey Thomas and three more (revealed during this campaign).

Original two-page panoramic color paintings by award-winning artist Les Edwards will precede each story, giving us windows into each respective underworld. I AM THE ABYSS will be printed in a unique 8"x8" format, presenting the color artwork of Les Edwards in a stunning 16"x8" size across both pages.

Artist Menton James Matthews III (Menton3) is creating a campaign-exclusive front cover that will only be featured on Kickstarter-ordered copies of the book. Campaign-exclusive editions will be printed for contributors, reviewers and campaign backers. After campaign backer, reviewer and contributor packages have been fulfilled no additional copies of the campaign-exclusive edition will be printed again.

Published by Portland, Oregon Based Specialty Publisher Dark Regions Press

I AM THE ABYSS will not be released for retail sale until at least 95% of Kickstarter campaign supporters receive their ordered items. Dark Regions Press has developed a new multi-phase fulfillment system to ensure that each customer gets exactly what they ordered and sent to the correct shipping address. Books are packed with extra strong bubble wrap in weight tested U-Line boxes to ensure no damage during transit.

For any questions or concerns about the campaign, your pledge or the project please e-mail us at: darkregions.help@gmail.com

Ebook: offered in MOBI (Amazon Kindle), EPUB (most other e-readers) and PDF (Desktop PC) featuring all illustrations in full color (on applicable digital platforms). Includes campaign-exclusive front cover artwork by Menton3 as an illustration.

All physical editions of I AM THE ABYSS are printed in a unique 8"x8" trim size and Kickstarter-exclusive editions are first edition + first printing.

Trade Paperback: Features all illustrations in full color and features the campaign-exclusive front cover artwork by Menton3 only offered during this campaign (retail trade paperback is also offered for preorder). Includes all applicable stretch goals.

This numbering sequence will continue into retail editions after all Kickstarter-exclusive editions are fulfilled.

Signed by all ten authors, artist Les Edwards and editor Chris Morey, bound in black leather, printed offset on premium acid free paper with Smyth sewn binding, black dyed page edges, illustrated end sheets, black satin book ribbon features a campaign-exclusive dust jacket with front cover by Menton3 and housed in a premium black slipcase.

I'm planning to sell my lettered Joe Abercrombie's next. (see above post)
I always start my auctions with an extremely low opening bid, like $10.00. This practically always works out.
But now I'm not sure what to do. the two books I'm planning to sell cost me a total of $600.00, plus shipping to Europe, plus duty, so closer to $700.00.
Is Joe Abercrombie popular enough to start my auction with such a low opening bid (NO reserve), or should I play safe this time and begin, say, at $600.00 with a $850.00 buy now option?
Thoughts anyone?

A lettered Half a King was sold for $500 (one bid) on April 12. Although, now that I went back to look, it seems no feedback was left for the purchase. I think selling Abercrombie is a safe bet to get your money back, but you never know, right?

Something new and neat. This goes up on eBay tonight, but a quick PM could grab it before it starts:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e306/KNOMEOR/Ligotti-Small_zps7qwvg60f.jpg

Thomas Ligotti
Foreword by Jeff VanderMeer

SONGS OF A DEAD DREAMER
and GRIMSCRIBE

Pengion, [October] 2015.
Advance reading copy (ARC, uncorrected proof) of the forthcoming omnibus edition. A clean, VG+/NF copy: shows light overall handling and some wear and minor bumping to edges, light crease down front wraps at center from shipping. Straight and nice.

The first, and so far only, copy that we've seen of this proof.

From the Publisher:

Thomas Ligotti’s debut collection, Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and his second, Grimscribe, permanently inscribed a new name in the pantheon of horror fiction. Influenced by the strange terrors of Lovecraft and Poe and by the brutal absurdity of Kafka, Ligotti eschews cheap, gory thrills for his own brand of horror, which shocks at the deepest, existential, levels.

Ligotti’s stories take on decaying cities and lurid dreamscapes in a style ranging from rich, ornamental prose to cold, clinical detachment. His raw and experimental work lays bare the unimportance of our world and the sickening madness of the human condition. Like the greatest writers of cosmic horror, Ligotti bends reality until it cracks, opening fissures through which he invites us to gaze on the unsettling darkness of the abyss below.

Starting price is $24.95 with $3.95 shipping. Anyone interested at that price, please feel free to drop a note.

Looking for a numbered 1-13 double slipcased copy of Tim Curran's The Devil Next Door published by Altar 13. Anybody interested in selling, send me a message. Looking at comparable copies at ABE.com, a signed NF later printing (if it's not a first, a 2nd printing's about the same as an 18th or 32nd, etc.) in a price-clipped dj seems to be around $20 to $40. As usual with ABE, prices are all over the board, but the average seems to be in that area.

Still, not bad considering that I picked it up at a local used Bookstore in Nashville for $1. Got home and noticed it was signed (and looks to be authentic compared to his sigs that I see online). Same store that 2 weeks ago I found a 1st/1st of AA Game of Thrones in VG for $10.50. I love McKay's, I've picked up many of the more common King 1st/1sts there at very good prices, even a Thinner.

I'm running out of space on my bookshelf and am trying to raise some funds for some upcoming purchases. Most of these will go up on eBay once I get around to taking pictures. Can expedite the picture taking if anyone would like some. All are in fine condition.

Still doing some research on pricing, so feel free to send along an offer if you're interested and think the book is worth less than I listed. There's a good chance I'll take it :) Prices are for PP gift, or add 2.9% . Will split shipping in the US.
