Well I was thinking to start that thread for a few days. The hype around this book is huge and will get bigger when the movie (directed by Spielberg) will be out.

The second book (Armada) is scheduled to be published in July along with US signing tour.

If you didn't read the book - Do it !

If you can get your hands on the first edition - Do it !

Info from Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9969571-ready-player-one)

Let's go....

Well I'm working and on-call the night of the 13th - so I won't be able to make it to Petaluma - too bad - nice place and was there to see Joe Hill last year. At least I'm off on the 14th - so I'll be at the official book launch at Keplers. I don't have any pictures of my 1/1 - turns out I had my reading copy from a few years back - carried it around awhile - took the dj off and left it somewhere. Left the book for my wife to read - after we moved - found the dj put it back on book and then on bookshelf since my wife never had time to read it - then found a 1/1 online the other day (should be here next week) and figured I should check what was the printing of the copy I had at home - stupid me it turns out it was a 1/1 - I had no clue. I guess this was back before I really started collecting and didn't pay any attention. Anyway becca said I gotta stop checking to make sure it's still a 1/1 and stop touching it (the book that is).

The plan will be for that copy to be signed on the 14th. I'm off that day and have a meeting until 2pm - so I'll head down there and get in around 4 - plenty early to scope things out and get situated - in case anyone else is around and wants to join me.

Oh and I just got the ebook of rp1 with audio by wil Wheaton, since my "reading" copy ain't a reading copy anymore. We have a long drive on Thursday - so we will listen to wil on the way down - should be fun.

I had no idea this book was "collectable"; dug mine out and slapped a Broadart on it. It is a first - but "gently" read. I still have all those old Infocom games and some of the "New Zork Times" issues. Loved that stuff.

In case anyone is interested -I do have an extra copy of RP1 (1/1) - it is unsigned - but I will be attending the book launch for Armada in July and can get it signed/personalized that day as well as a copy of Armada from launch day too.

SOLD

btw - I will not be selling the copy unsigned - since 3 signed copies on eBay have gone for $360/380/400 recently and there is another for $445. But I will be willing to sell a signed copy for less than those, plus the Armada at cost.

Oh, and I will not be planning on getting anymore copies of armada separately on launch day either - my bag is already filled (I have learned to limit myself :) )

Nothing up or listed. His blog has links to buy signed copies of armada - and info to come soon. I just happened to come across keplers site and they mentioned having the book launch - otherwise I haven't seen any other listings; although another local spot said he'd be there on the 13th - which I'm not sure since its day before the launch.

Oh my! So after seeing a picture of RP1 somewhere on TDT and this thread in particular, I picked up a copy and read it in 3 days. Just finished it a few minutes ago actually.

Absolutely loved it! If anyone has a 1/1 for sale, let me know. I don't know how I missed this book.

For me, it was a wonderful trip down memory lane, a powerful statement about perseverance, a touching love story, and a great lesson about getting out more and experiencing life outside of technology. Oh, and of course, a fitting tribute to 80's pop culture.

Lettered SOLD OUT

Wow. That was fast. They still had the lettered when I ordered and I really debated it. I always check them on Sunday mornings; usually Jerad sends out his weekly newsletter on Sunday mornings, so it's just habit to check them both. I just got my e-mail from them and would have been a bit upset if I had wanted a lettered one.

But as surprised as I was to find out Ready Player One was a "collectable" I just checked the price for a signed first Martian and am even more stunned...Need to go find that one and broadart it.

Thank you for the listing - and only grabbing one of the books :) - now another book to add to the signing event. At this rate I will just wait until the bitter end and get in the back of the line for the signing

No problem. I'm not the type that needs more than one copy. And the wait for the signing will be worth it.

And who knows how many have gone back n forth - especially the ones sold for mid 20's might be ones people are trying to sell in the 80's. Then what'll happen after the tour with the signed copies hitting the market. I think I'll have to ask him what he thinks about the new pixels movie and if you just shake your head when that comes out around same time as your book.

Not sure I'd take the risk:

Please note: Cline will join us for a lunchtime booksigning at our downtown store and an evening event (reading and booksigning) at our Cedar Hills Crossing location.

Please note: Signed preordered books will be shipped to you and are not available for pick-up in the store the night of the event (but if you're planning to attend, don't worry! Signed editions are usually available at the events). Also, we are sorry but we can not accommodate personalized inscriptions, or guarantee the signed books are first editions. Thanks for your understanding.

It seems unlikely since their signing is day after book launch. But I assume they added that from issues with previous signings and disgruntled shoppers

Nice EC interview on goodreads. Talks about rp1 trilogy...

GR: Which writers have been influential or inspirational to you?

EC: William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Roald Dahl. But I also love Carl Sagan's nonfiction books as well as his book Contact. Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, his juvenile adventures and his bigger novels, too, and Alfred Bester, who wrote The Stars My Destination. But probably the biggest of all time is Stephen King. I just devoured Stephen King books when I was growing up.

I wouldn't sell mine for less than 250. There have been a few sold for 350-400. The black cover proof seems even more scarce. One just sold for 350 on eBay. I lucked out and found one on ABE for 75.

There's a paperback version of Armada out of Australia it seems. I'm guessing it's like with new King releases when a trade paperback is released at the time of the hardcover for airports and some export countries. There's some on eBay here (http://www.ebay.com/itm/131553813839).

Getting Ready for the Armada book launch today. I know this is not as exciting as the Finder's Keepers weekend. But I hope I can get a bit more than one book signed. Plus I think Ernie might be a bit more entertaining than King at this event tonight. Anyone with any questions you want me to try and ask? I think I will see what he has to say about a movie like pixels being released at same time his book is - and does he enjoy a movie like that or cringe knowing his book was already optioned.

Reading was a lot of fun - Ernie talked for about 50 minutes and then answered questions for a bit. Showed a slide show with all of the movies, etc that influenced him. He's a very fast talker - he went through his whole life history and a timeline of his writing and about fan boys as well. A lot of fun. Waiting now until the end to get my stuff signed. Fortunately I'm off tomorrow since it'll be a long night. But I don't want to be that guy with two bags of books - and feel rushed with glaring eyes boring through my skull. Plus either his hand will be very tired (although this is only second stop on the tour) or he'll be accommodating to all my wants and desires - for signing of course - I'm hoping the latter.

Tiring, very tiring. 90 minute drive there and then back. Signing started at about 8:50 and I was near the end at about 10:30 - so not too bad. The store workers were really nice and helped move things along. But it was extremely difficult to keep track of 24 books, try and talk with Ernie, get a picture, etc.

I told him about the dark tower and that most of the extra books were for members - he said "oh I've been on there in the past" and I mentioned we started a Cline thread and he said he'd have to check it out - so who knows, maybe one day Ernie will happen along our thread and share some insight.

After all of the books were signed (as I was nearing the end) I asked if he wouldn't mind signing a couple Atari cartridges - he was cool with that - but the staff weren't (it was late and one said "I think we can't sign any more toys" - so I only got a couple signed - but that was the same woman who took a picture of me next to Ernie). There were no posed pictures to move the line - but I got one since I was near the end - basically a photo book bomb - so I was happy.

A really enjoyable evening. I even went on amazon afterwards to order fan boys - since I had not seen it (and it's not on Netflix). I'll post some pics shortly

Btw, I finished Armada last night and I really enjoyed it.

And anyone who says that it's a rip off of the Last Starfighter or Ender's Game either hasn't bothered reading it or just plain doesn't get it. It's much more of an homage.

And another interesting tidbit. Go look at the IMBD page for the Last Starfighter. Interesting close coincidence.

Good news: every book was signed :)
All books were personalized - for those that wanted. He was not much into lining the books - had to ask - and with 24 books a near impossible task to do. He usually wasn't dating them either - I had to ask each time - and some made it through before I could ask.
You might see an odd inscription in your book - MTFBWYA! - I noticed it last night but did not pay much attention - then I saw it in most when I was going through the books. It took me about 5 seconds to figure out what it was - hint - it is from his favorite movie

Totally agree - I am on chapter 5 and will finish it later today. But he loved Last Starfighter and spoke about that. Showed all of the movies that influenced him. If anything he said that his book was a rip-off of Iron Eagle

This one is for my niece (a sophomore at PSU - who loved my library at her visit here last month) - and fortunately I talked to her about RPO and she said she loved it - and I mentioned I would see him in a few weeks...after reading the book she had to go out and watch War Games - so I asked for this for her:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Ernest%20Cline/thumb_IMG_4762_1024_zpsjqnqmqy8.jpg (http://s287.photobucket.com/user/chadtarter/media/Ernest%20Cline/thumb_IMG_4762_1024_zpsjqnqmqy8.jpg.html)

I think that is awesome - now I enjoyed War Games - but I was a much bigger fan of Douglas Adams and the Hitchhikers guide - so I asked for something along that line in my 1/1 RPO:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Ernest%20Cline/thumb_IMG_4769_1024_zpsgu9j7qbv.jpg (http://s287.photobucket.com/user/chadtarter/media/Ernest%20Cline/thumb_IMG_4769_1024_zpsgu9j7qbv.jpg.html)

So to me - this one means more - but the war games line is pretty awesome (plus he added one of the no 6-ers in there

And lastly - my copy of Armada:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/chadtarter/Ernest%20Cline/thumb_IMG_4770_1024_zpsd9z1jnlr.jpg (http://s287.photobucket.com/user/chadtarter/media/Ernest%20Cline/thumb_IMG_4770_1024_zpsd9z1jnlr.jpg.html)

living just outside Napa/Sonoma - I loved this line and was happy he added it in when I asked - it occurs early on in the book - "In Wine there is Truth"

It was a lot of fun. And a very long day. I got there around 3 or so. Was in line early to get a seat. And then for the signing - those that were in first got to go through the signing line first. So I could have been out of there in about 25 minutes - but instead I waited until the end. Maybe that is one thing to pass on - and maybe that is just me. If I was in line behind someone that had 25 books to sign - I might feel a bit annoyed, plus if I went early in line with that many books - it would have gone too quickly - and I figured the only way I could get a few lined was to wait until the very end (and I have a lot of patience). Also the Keplers staff were appreciative that I waited until the end with all of my books - so it really worked out well. I guess that is my biggest signing tip - have patience and enjoy the whole event. I was in no rush and enjoyed talking to the young kid next to me in line. He just happened to read about the event a few days ago and thought it would be interesting - and picked up RPO that day and started reading it - it was a lot of fun. I got everything out of the event that I wanted (and there was no one else from here that was there to start any finders keepers back n forth as to my actions...jk - ;) )

Has anyone purchased the kindle version of Armada? I am most interested in the audio version (to hear Wil Wheaton again - my wife enjoyed him reading RPO) - but amazon usually discounts the audio version after you buy the kindle book. So far I had not seen any discounts to add the audio version yet (maybe book is too new?). However the Martian was on sale for kindle for about $5.99 and you could add the audio book for another $3.99 - so I was hoping for that kind of deal. So if anyone has purchased and can confirm that would be great. I think i might just have to wait for this one to come up though.

Very cool - so is Ernest your mutual friend? Or did you just send them directly for him to sign?

And Ernie mentioned possibly plans for trilogy of both books - i know, i hate the trilogy thing - but he stated the movies plan these things out - and want to expand the series - and if you do not write the next book - they will still make the next movie. Sounds kind of game of thrones HBO/ish - kind of sucks for the writers though.

They did that with JP The Lost World. They convinced Crichton to write the book and then used almost nothing from the story.

Thanks. Basically, a friend of mine who I've known for over 15 years is also a friend of Ernest's. So I sent them to my friend and he was kind enough to get them signed for me. Interestingly, I also discovered we had another connection. In the late 90s/early 2000's, Ernest and I were both on slam teams from different cities, competing at the nationals. But I never met him back then. Another coincidence was that the press that published his early spoken word poetry, was the same one that had published a book of my poetry. Of course, Ernest ended up becoming famous and I didn't!

Nothing worse than a rushed book - unless you are waiting for GRRM...

Oh I just got my B&N signed Armada today - I would post but it is nothing special. No tipped in page, just signed on front sheet - and actually you would hardly know he signed it. Nothing like the sigs from last night. It looks like his initials. Oh well - that will be the copy I read and then send over to my dad to read. Plus they put and extra bar code sticker on the back over the one on the DJ

Ha! I was afraid you'd ask that. I sort of compartmentalize certain aspects of my life, and I keep that part separate/private from most other things. The book is out of print, but if you like poetry and would like to read it, PM me your address and I will send you a copy. I will even sign it for you! Peace.

First, the bookstore (Joseph & Beth) is awesome, huge and beautiful.
Got there at 7:00 pm (3 hours drive from Nashville) - talk, Q&A and signing. Ernie is fast talker, funny and very very nice person. He took the time to signed every book anyway you wanted, chat with people and pose for photos. Store personnel was very helpful and nice. Great event ( and worth the driving)

So you guys will enjoy this.
I can't seem to find a hardcover of RPO any where I go lately so I just ran to half price books and they happen to have one paper back. I do my usual I look at the printing and notice it is a 29th. Don't really care just want a reading copy. Drop the $7.00 take it home throw it on the shelf next to Armada. Later that night I go in the library and notice the book had fallen over so I pick it up and just thumb through it. Then to my surprise I end up on the title page to find Cline's signature... HPB didn't catch that it was signed and neither did I until I bought it and had already taken it home and put it on the shelf! :excited:  :nana:

So I have to ask because maybe I missed it...
How did Art3mis get ahead by second round?
Round 1 - Wade was ahead by 1000 points because he found the key first, then when he went thought the gate (and somehow everyone got the same amount of points even though it talks about losing points for being late) he was in first followed by Art3mis and H each leading the other by 1000.
Round 2 - Somehow when Art3mis finishes the second round first followed by wade she is now ahead by 1000 points... shouldn't they be equal? if she was at +0 and he was at +1000 when she gets the +1000 and he gets +0 they are now tied... I don't get it

Ok I'm done complaining... :)

9.5.

There was a lot of nostalgia for me in this story. So maybe that accounted for a point. And it has all the elements I love in a book. Action, adventure, love story. And I felt it was well written of course. Engaging all through. A real page turner. I was never bored.

I have stayed away from this.... mainly cause mostly bad reviews. Seems kind of mixed here too... I may someday though!

Bad reviews? It has 91% 4 and 5 star ratings on Amazon.

As a child of the 80's, I loved it. Armada, his second book, wasn't as good, but RP1 is wonderful.

A solid 9/10 for me

Kris, I did the same thing... There was so much hype around it that I didn't want to read it. My girlfriend finally convinced me to pick it up and I couldn't put it down until the end. Very good story

For me the book with so much hype, that I ended up not enjoying at all was The Martian.

I am NOT reading that at all. Too much tech stuff I am told... I think that takes away from the story. The movie however is getting RAVE reviews... 98% I think of Rotten Tomatoes!

That was a tough book for sure, but I actually loved it. I guess having a math/science background made it a little easier for me. Can't wait for the movie. Matt Damon is going to be awesome.

I couldn't put down RP1. It is great book IMO 9.5/10 I think the movie will be awesome !

The Martian was slow at the beginning - too technical for me but I enjoyed it and during the reading I was thinking - man, I can't wait for the movie. This book was written to be a movie.
Btw - I read an article that NASA actually supported weir with the book and especially to promote it in Hollywood ...

Loved The Martian. i read it about a month ago. If you haven't read it yet, think Apollo 13 (which in turn was based on "Lost Moon" by James Lovell) Yes it has a lot of tech but it is an amazing story of survival and problem solving. As soon as I finished it I thought "That would make a GREAT movie" 3 weeks later I started to see the advertising Billboards! I cant wait to go and see it.

I am on vacation this week - so the goals are - finish the martian - then see the movie and then meet Andy at the end of the month (and get several books signed).

And I loved RP1, and I really did enjoy Armada - it was a fun read - nothing spectacular - maybe slightly biased since I did get a chance to meet him during the signing tour - maybe that always allows for a bit more leeway when rating a book. Speaking of RP1 - i really enjoyed the audio version - my wife doesn't read that much - or have the time with her work. but she thoroughly enjoyed the audio book and Will Wheaton reading - on our last hockey traveling trip. Will reads Armada as well - so I will give that a try too. The RP1 audio version was very cheap when I got the discounted kindle ebook and added the audio version with it.

sooo I have a hardcover of Ready Player One that is deep in my reading pile, also I have checked out the Audiobook edition (read by Will Wheaton) from the library. Any thoughts on which to consume first?

@Becca: would you want the case like Bills for the S/L? That matches the trade really well but not necessarily the S/L

@All: Do we want pictures or just words? We can look at the aftermarket Slipcase thread in Calvin's corner for others that have been done.

So after a little back a forth with Jeff we came to the conclusion that his set up is not meant for over-sized cases. For the RP1 case I can only go to a maximum size of 8 inches up and down or left to right so to do the circles on the spine it would look off with a 1" gap on top and bottom since it's a 10.25" tall book. For the Martian we could do just a name plate for the front but we could not add anything to the spine due to size limitations. Anyone just wanting a case with no stamp whatsoever can still request one. I am confidant that he can create the case just the stamp is the issue.

So if anyone knows any other case makers let me know.

Would RP1 work with the four circles (not including the Crown logo) centered on the spine and closer together?

And could The Martian just be reduced and closer together?
